The future of TP Trucking is described best in two words: exponential growth. The transportation division of Timber Products plans to expand its fleet size, personnel and breadth of services over the next few years. “It’s an exciting time,” said Tom Gennarelli, VP of Trucking and Transportation. “There are older carrier companies that are exiting the market and new ones that are just beginning to get their bearings. These changes open up opportunity for us to grow our businesses.” One of TP Trucking’s growth strategies has come to fruition with the creation of a logistics branch. The creation of TP Logistics enables TP Trucking to become a one-stop shop for all their customers’ needs. To date, TP Trucking has a fleet of 150 trucks comprised of 100 company-owned and 50 owner- operated. The goal is to expand the fleet over the course of 10 years. Gennarelli explained, “Ideally, we would like to have 300 trucks in five years and 500 trucks by the 10-year mark. It’s an ambitious goal, but I firmly believe we will make it happen.” The increase in fleet size corresponds with a diversification of truck style. TP Trucking plans to add day cabs, dry vans and residual trailers to the fleet. They will also acquire maxi trailers to help their current customers. “The diversification of products we can haul will be a major step in growing and acquiring new business as we move forward,” said Craig Turner, General Manager for TP Trucking. Their current turnover rate is low at 20%, whereas the national turnover rate for trucking jobs is around 90%. “We have operated safely for over 330 days and our turnover rate is 20%! Both are incredible metrics that many trucking companies struggle to achieve,” said Gennarelli. With Powell’s addition, there will be an increased focus on organically growing TP Trucking’s current customer base. Combining Powell’s prior sales experience with the use of Salesforce software to automate our processes will lead to increased productivity levels across the board.

These changes open up opportunity for us to grow our businesses.”

One of TP Trucking’s growth strategies has come to fruition with the creation of a logistics branch. Known as TP Logistics, this sister branch ties into trucking’s brokerage capabilities and allows them to offer 3PL services to all of their customers.

TP Logistics covers truck, rail and marine movement of products. It will also offer warehousing locations in the future. The creation of TP Logistics enables TP Trucking to become a one-stop shop for all their customers’ needs.

To date, TP Trucking has a fleet of 150 trucks comprised of 100 company-owned and 50 owner-operated. The goal is to expand the fleet over the course of 10 years.

Gennarelli explained, “Ideally, we would like to have 300 trucks in five years and 500 trucks by

the 10-year mark. It’s an ambitious goal, but I firmly believe we will make it happen.”

The increase in fleet size corresponds with a diversification of truck style.

To accomplish their goals, TP Trucking has brought on new team members who can facilitate change.

Late last year, Joe Anderson was hired as a new HR/Recruiter to enhance driver recruitment efforts. In March 2020, Alicia Powell was hired as a National Sales Manager to create new business leads and accounts across the U.S.

“Joe is doing a great job in putting our name out into the market for drivers to be aware that we are hiring,” said Turner.

Anderson’s recruitment efforts are aided by TP Trucking’s strong reputation for treating its drivers with respect.

Besides maintaining their presence on the West coast, there is opportunity for TP Trucking to expand East. The plan is to locate strategic areas throughout the country, specifically in the Southeast and Midwest, to acquire new operations and partner with reload stations or warehouse locations.

“Right now, the largest growth market in the US is the Southeast,” explained Gennarelli. “With our operational facility in Cornith, Miss., we want to take advantage of our position in that area.”

At the end of the day, TP Trucking’s growth is still about and for our people.

“The key to growth is our people and our culture,” said Gennarelli. “It is imperative to keep our culture constant while we expand into new horizons.”

A WORD FROM OUR TIMBER PRODUCTS CEO“This too shall pass.”These words are echoing in my mind as I ponder the global situation and what it means for Timber Products. I have been working in this industry for almost 44 years. In my career, there have been spotted owls, a couple of recessions, a couple of wars, 9/11, SARS, a hostile takeover of one company over another and the list goes on. Here’s the nugget: resilient people take stock of the situation, look for opportunities to change, make adjustments and come out the other side ready to face a new reality.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world. We are literally in a battle for people’s lives. But, we are already seeing where a rapid response to initiate the recommendations of the CDC, such as what we have done at Timber Products, is working to slow the spread of the

virus. We can also see where inaction is causing disastrous results. With that in mind and knowing that the pandemic is wreaking havoc on our economy, we also have to address the question of how does Timber Products position itself for a sustainable level of operations.

These are challenging times. We have made and will continue to make some difficult decisions. We understand that these decisions have impacts on people’s lives. None of this is taken lightly or made in haste. For me, it becomes quite personal and emotional. Most of you would not know that I grew up the son of a millworker in a plywood operation. I have experienced the ups and downs of this industry and know how it can impact a family.

We must all turn our attention to focusing on the future. This company has been around for

over 100 years and we are positioning Timber Products to be around for many, many more. We have made some great progress this past year and had really good momentum going into 2020. The work we have done is stalled due to the pandemic but remains intact. We have reason to believe that, while we are contending with a severe recession now, we should see good recovery in the market 4 to 6 months after we come out of the crisis.

I have no doubt that once this is over, we will become a stronger company and that we will recapture our momentum. We all can look forward to better times. “This too shall pass.”

CUSTOMER CENTRICITY IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

During this challenging time, being customer centric is more important than ever. At Timber Products, we are facing many of the same challenges that our customers are encountering. We are acutely aware that every decision we make impacts our customers and we strongly consider the effect of our decisions on our partners.

With that in mind, Timber Products is working hard to continue our operations as normally as possible so that we can help our customers operate in the same manner.

Our approach does not stop there; we are actively working with our customers to help them anticipate their needs in this rapidly changing environment. When counties in California adopted shelter in place orders and began shutting down operations, we worked with our customers to help them develop flexible delivery options.

As global supply chains shift, we are working with customers to help them adapt their product mix so they can meet their customers’ needs. We understand that businesses are responding to the rapidly changing market, and Timber Products is ready to help your organization adapt.

Good communication is even more important during uncertain times. Our sales teams are working remotely but have adopted every tool available to us to ensure that we can maintain clear and constant communications with our customers.

While social distancing limits in-person meetings, our teams are utilizing multiple digital platforms to connect via video conference. We proactively communicate with customers to understand impacts to their business and to ensure they know of any impacts to ours.

The current business environment is anything but business-as-usual. The rapidly changing work and economic environment makes planning challenging. However, Timber Products remains a dedicated business partner to provide solutions to your organization’s needs.

TIMBER PRODUCTS VISITS ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS TO MEET WITH STUDENTSThe relationship between forest products companies and academia is vital to ensuring the success of the entire industry. When graduating students seek employment, the forest products industry needs to be on their radar for career consideration. The marketing department of Timber Products knows this well. In February 2020, both Chris Knowles, our Marketing Director, and Kassandra Stout, our Marketing Associate, visited colleges with forest products programs to talk with students about the company.

On February 17, Knowles visited the Department of Renewable Materials at Oregon State University to speak with undergraduate students in the Introduction to Renewable Materials class.

The subject of his lecture was plywood manufacturing, the perfect topic to help introduce the materials Timber manufactures on a daily basis. Knowles provided an overview and brief history of the company to the students.

“The class had 15 freshmen present, which was great because they are an important audience

to engage with,” said Knowles. “Many of the students indicated they plan to pursue careers in forest products.”

Then, on February 21, Stout visited the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts at Mississippi State University, where she was once a graduate student. She spoke to a group of undergraduate and graduate students who are a part of the Mississippi State Forest Products Society Chapter.

“It was wonderful to speak with the students,” said Stout. “I’ve always believed fostering relationships between forest product companies and academic departments is critical for our industry’s success.”

In her presentation, Stout explained the history of Timber Products, what it does as an organization, the variety of products manufactured and current employment opportunities.

“We loved the opportunity to host Kassandra as our guest speaker!” said Guangmei Cao, president of the MSU FPS Chapter. “Our members learned a lot about Timber Products that we otherwise did not know.”

Stout expressed that most of the students had not heard of Timber before her visit. They were surprised to discover we have a manufacturing facility located in Corinth, Miss., only two hours north of Starkville, Miss., where the college is based.

“It didn’t surprise me that the students were unaware of Timber, but it further emphasizes how important it is for not only our company, but others, to have a greater presence on college campuses,” said Stout. “When students are looking for employment, our name should be included on that list.”

The students echoed their thanks to Stout in taking the time to visit and talk to them about their concerns about life after graduation.

“Seeing Kassy employed at a forest products company, in the line of work she wanted, is inspiring to a lot of us,” said Laurice Spinelli, a current doctoral student. “It is what we all want to happen after graduation.”

Knowles and Stout send their thanks to both academic institutions for allowing them time to visit with students.

CUSTOMER LOUNGE WINS WIDE APPEAL AT KBIS 2020Timber Products attended the annual Kitchen and Bath Industry (KBIS) show this past January 2020 in Las Vegas, Nev. The show was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center with 600 exhibitors and over 90,000 attendees during the three-day event. There were 100 new exhibitors and 25 new global brands on display.

This was the first time Timber exhibited at the KBIS show. Years past involved only a few company representatives walking the event.

Instead of a traditional booth set-up, Timber chose to do something a bit different from their competitors for their space. They created a “customer lounge” by transforming an enclosed meeting room off the main floor into a quiet space where customers could get away from busy main floor.

“The customers really liked having a place to come relax and get away,” said Doug Clark, our Hardwood Sales Manager.

The customer lounge featured comfortable seating, meeting spaces, phone charging stations and food and beverages. There was even a happy hour with a hosted bar during the afternoon on two days.

“Customers loved our booth set-up,” explained Jed Peterson, OEM Sales Manager. “It was a fun and relaxing time to spend with them without a pressure of selling.”

This thought was echoed by the entire team present at the show. Many of the customers expressed appreciation for the chance to escape from the busy show floor or their own booths.

Beyond the success of the lounge, our sales team had productive meetings with their customers.

One of the highlights was having a key international supplier, Masisa, conduct a product knowledge seminar for our sales team members.

“I think our team really enjoyed Masisa giving a product knowledge seminar,” expressed Pat Lynch, our International Sales Manager. “It gave them a chance to learn and build upon their current knowledge regarding Masisa products that we import.”

For next year’s KBIS 2021 show in Orlando, Fla., Timber Products plans to build on this year’s lounge idea to provide a similar experience.

“Since the lounge received such a great response this first time, we want to continue with it and make improvements for next year,” said Chris Knowles, our Marketing Director. “We look forward to seeing everyone again in Orlando!”

Stay tuned for additional updates on our plans for KBIS 2021 Orlando.

Spring 2020

COPING WITH THE NEW NORMAL OF SOCIAL DISTANCING DUE TO COVID-19At the start of 2020, no one foresaw the coming disruption of everyday life by the emergence of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus. Soon, social distancing and staying home when possible became the best practices to use to combat the spread of this virus as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

A top priority of Timber Products has always been and continues to be the safety of our employees in our mills and offices across the US.

Our CEO, Steve Killgore, explained in his March podcast how Timber Products has taken precautions to mitigate employee risk as advised by the CDC and World Health Organization.

Timber Products is classified as an essential business by the Department of Homeland Security and thus, our mills and offices remain open for business. However, when we are not at work, we are asked to stay at home whenever possible to reduce our risk of exposure.

Staying at home for long periods of time can be difficult for everyone because of our innate need to socialize (CDC, 2020). Whether

you live with your spouse, children or alone, discontinuing daily activities can affect your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

During this time of social distancing, we encourage you to take care of others by taking care of yourself. The CDC, the American Psychological Association (APA) and Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) have provided resources and advice to help the public manage this new normal.

Changes in our daily lives can incur increased irritability or frustration, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, increased worry and fear and over-consumption of alcohol or tobacco (CDC 2020; APA 2020). However, there are methods we can use to lessen the effect of social changes.

The CDC, APA and ADAA list a variety of ways you can help lower stress during this time, including: 1. Keep a daily routine

• This can provide a sense of order and purpose in daily life- Example: Wake up at the same time

every day; do laundry on the weekends

2. Stay informed about the news, but don’t obsess

• It is important to stay aware of current news, but not at the cost of your mental well-being

• Listen to credible news sources for updates• Take a break if you begin to feel

overwhelmed or anxious• This includes breaks from social media

(Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc)

3. Remain connected to people • It’s important to remain connected with

people virtually even when we cannot be physically connected

• Call, text or video chat with your friends and loved ones

4. Care for your body and mind • Get plenty of sleep• Exercise safely in your yard or

neighborhood with proper social distancing- Example: walking, biking, practicing

yoga or meditation • Eat healthy and well-balanced meals• Avoid over-consumption of alcohol• Focus on the positives

5. Take one day at a time • It is important to remember during these

difficult social changes that we are all in this together and one day our normal routines will resume.

If you experience symptoms of extreme stress or anxiety, reach out to your health care provider for help.

ADAPTING TO A NEW WAY OF LIFE AT TIMBER PRODUCTS DURING COVID-19The coronavirus has been a challenge for the entire world, including everyone at Timber Products. We have had to make daily changes and adapt to new ways of life. However, Timber Products has figured out how to remain a family-focused and customer-centric business while working from home and practicing social distancing in the mills.

Due to the shortages of sanitation supplies, David Mitchell, our Corinth Mill Manager, has found a way to create an improvised sanitation solution for mill workstations and common areas. He has shared this recipe with employees and encouraged them to make it for their own personal use.

The base recipe contains the following ingredients:

1 cup of 99% isopropyl alcohol1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide1 teaspoon of glycerin1/3 cups of distilled or boiled water

This disinfectant recipe is recommended by the World Health Organization and is also available, in more detail, on their website.

“We encourage employees to take it home with them

and practice at home what we do at work. It is important that we continue to help

one another and find ways to adapt, together,” said Mitchell.

While our employees have found ways to adapt to the new world created by COVID-19, they have also donated time and resources to support local communities.

In Southern Oregon, Timber Products is doing its part to support and protect healthcare employees. In late March, the Medford Particleboard and Grants Pass facilities donated over 1,000 N-95 masks to the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center and the Three Rivers Hospital.

Looking to the future, Timber Products plans to continue supporting c u s t o m e r s , communities and employees.

TIMBER PRODUCTS INTRODUCES PET OF THE QUARTERLetter from our first Pet of the Quarter, Sammy ClarkHi Timber Products!

My name is Samantha Jane Clark, or Sammy for short. I’m a 6-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever and I love my humans, Doug and Emily Clark! I really like going on walks, rain or shine, and swimming. I also like chasing sticks, but I’m not always the best at bringing them back. The trick is for my human to have several sticks so that we can keep playing! I played so hard that when I was 2, I had my back knees replaced, but you’d never guess it. I love when my human, Doug, comes back after long sales trips or even just a trip to the store! I’m always so excited to see him!

I hope you enjoy time with your pets this spring and give them plenty of treats!

Stay Pawsitive,

Sammy Clark

If you think your pet deserves to be recognized as the cutest and best pet there is, please nominate your special animal to the Springfield Marketing team to be the next Pet of the Quarter. Send your name, your pet’s name and a picture of who they are to [email protected]
