HOST Upgrading of St. Annes Orphanage

HOST has now completed upgrading work in the orphanage; including works to the kitchen, toilets and shower facilities are completed along with electrical and plumbing works.

In late August we visited the home and provided all the girls with sleeping mattresses and pillows. (Previously they have slept on the tiled floor with no bedding). The

before and after pictures tell the story of the material improvements but the biggest change is in the girls themselves. Where previously they were withdrawn, and miserable, this time they were smiling, singing and dancing. The changes are nothing short of remarkable and it is clear we have changed their lives in a positive way.

Golden Finsbury Delivered

TEAM BUILDING WITH SINGAPORE SEATEAM OFFICE STAFF

By Capt. Jay R. Velasquez, C/E Randolph Tartana

It does not always happen that senior sea staff spent a fortnight at Singapore SeaTeam office before joining their respective vessel assignments. Being in the office seeing, feeling and having a sense of involvement in the day to day activities of the various departments, creates an air of comfort, good rapport and makes us get to know one another better.

To break the ice of usual daily office jargon, the Managing Director hosted and invited everyone to

a TEAM BUILDING at Kartright Speedway for a Kart Racing where the group was divided into three, given the instructions and presto, stepped on the gas. Well, some got there first, while others just got there. Nevertheless, it was good fun and the camaraderie warmly felt for it is the journey and not the race that binds the TEAM. It was later followed by a BBQ party at the Park Oasis Condo where the heat of the afternoon’s Go-kart racing was quenched by light refreshments. An informal opening speech was delivered by our respected Managing Director where office staff who has been with the company since its inception were duly recognized.

No doubt, these significant TEAM BUILDING activities where sea-staff forms part of an integral group creates a substantial impact in our concept to stay for good in this ever growing company where both sea and shore staff works together as a TEAM for a common good towards the continuous unparalleled success of SEATEAM.

Go-Kart Teambuilding Poolside BBQBy Kuek Su Peng

In 2009 SeaTeam Singapore first shared a small area (few workstations) with other associated companies of the group on the 18th Floor of Keppel Towers with skeleton staff of 3-4 persons, but gradually found its “sea legs” in dedicated office spaces on the 19th floor. After much growth prosperity, the company has evolved into the SeaTeam family we know and love.

On 21st August 2015, following a Go-kart teambuilding afternoon, long standing employees received “5 Years Service Awards” from Managing Director, Mr Alasdair Smith, during a poolside BBQ held at the condominium of Capt. Vinod George and Superintendent Abdul Niyas. Belated awards were presented to sea staff who have come ashore after serving onboard in our fleet, including:

• Victor Che Ruiz Albano formerly a Chief Engineer is a Technical Superintendent with the Bulker Fleet.

• Abdul Niyas Valiyaveethil Abdul Nasar formerly a Chief Engineer is another Technical Superintendent with the Tanker Fleet.

• Chinnappa Sagayaraj Jayapaul formerly a Chief Engineer had recently completed his 2 months’ training in Singapore, going for his first drydocking mission in China, will also join later as a Technical Superintendent.

All three successfully managed the transition of adjusting to their new roles in the SeaTeam corporate culture while working harmoniously within the diverse multi-racial and religious colleagues environment ashore.

They have all in a way advanced in their respective career paths and grown with the company and were awarded their 5 years’ service too.

Ready to race

Winners James Yeap, 1st place; Vinod George, 2nd and Mark Adams, 3rd.

Qualifiers prepare for the final heat.

Having been one of the 16 persons on the award list, after 5 Years… I witnessed:

• Official opening of its own office space• Sublet tenants moved out and the company occupies

the whole office space• Staff growth from 3 to 42 staff in Singapore, personnel

with 2 crewing offices in Chennai and Manila, and more than 1000 offshore personnel.

• Several single male and female employees starting their families

• Fleet of 4 vessels grew to 33 vessels, with a total of 40 vessels expected in 2016

• We have now three fleet groups and three Fleet Managers.

On the awards night, in the midst of BBQ food, wines and beers, the Managing Director also announced that growth is being supported by recruitment of three new shore employees, one inter-department transfer, and two promotions of existing staff, to consistently maintain a manageable span of control staff and experience to support the fleet. The good news followed a great day, with great team.

Majulah SeaTeam all the way!

After four tedious months of missing her daddy, two year old Kenudi was all set to reunite with her first Superhero “her TaTa” onboard Sea Bay. She travelled all the way from Colombo to Singapore by air to set sail; both first time. Peeping through the boat window, her eyes were fixed on that magnificent toy floating in the water, sparkling with lights all over. As the boat was nearing SEA BAY; she was brimmed over with delight. She discovered for the first time that boat ride was her favourite leisure pursuit from thereon.

Kenudi, 2/E Rakkitha Rajapakse’s daughter and his wife Janani joined SEA BAY at Singapore on 1st July 2015. Kenu, as she is affectionately called by everyone onboard, could muddle through the industrious atmosphere insta-mediately. She is pampered as the “Princess of Sea Bay”. Her manifestation onboard radiates colossal amount of positive ambience in every nook and corner of the ship. Everyone perceives a glimpse of their own daughter or son in Kenu and prevue all their love and care to mollycoddle her. Apart from being in a hectic schedule full of activity, she made us feel at home.

It was for the first time in the history of SeaTeam that a vessel had a complement of 34 folks. The total number of families onboard now increased to two along with Chief Officer Vikas Dwivedi’s wife Rajni. Coupled with the fact that vessel is on time charter involved in

THE PRINCESS OF SEA BAYby 3rd Officer Kannan Karuppu Swamy

cross harbor trade in Singapore; we had sumptuous prospects for shore leave. All of us made sure that Kenu went ashore on every available opportunity, though vessel was meandering only around Singapore. But she seemed to enjoy the Boat Ride more than the Shore Leave itself. She was showered with gifts and toys on every occasion.

Everyone is so much obsessed with Kenu that her father was coerced to drag out his contract by all aboard. We cobbled together a throne for the princess to reach over at the dinner table as she was too small for the normal chair. She is gifted with the power to appease anyone with her endearing smile. The Managing Director and Fleet Manager who visited the vessel were also captivated by her charm. Her nifty tactics substantiates that she would follow the footprints of her dad to become an engineer. Sea Bay is currently at anchor in Singapore, awaiting berthing schedule for the last leg of discharge. All of us are relishing her presence onboard and envisage sailing with Kenu again in another ship.

Wishing the Princess all the best for her future with lots and loads of love and prayers

As a subject of Her Majesty, Princess Kenudi, Long May She Reign.

2/E Rakkitha Rajapakse ripostes on Kenudi’s visit:

“My wife has sailed with me previously but it was my daughter’s first ever visit out of the country and mostly onboard a ship. All crew members have been highly affectionate for her and same is my daughter towards them. Presently she appreciates staying onboard rather than going back home.

Her first gift onboard was from Capt.Kalyan; a tri-cycle, which she loved to ride. Since then she has received many gifts from crew members including Chief engineer for which I am grateful. Special mention on the throne made for Kenudi at the dinner table.

We were very lucky to have multiple shore leaves in Singapore arranged by Master. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Capt.Kalyan for the affection showered towards my daughter gifting her with many presents and mainly for teaching her to draw and so forth to improve her cognitive skills.”

Thanks and best regards

A Step Towards InnovationBy Mincy Jerome Maniego, Second Engineer, Golden Cathrine

SeaTeam Management welcomes Golden Cathrine whole heartedly especially for it has the new type of engine not commonly used, MAN B&W but Wartsila RT-flex engine which is the first in our fleet.

Golden Cathrine an Ultramax Bulk Carrier with 34900 gross tonnage was delivered 28th of January 2015 in JMU-Kure Shipyard Hiroshima Japan from Diesel United shipbuilder followed by her sistership, Golden Cecilie a week after.

Mr Artemio Fernandez, our Training Superintendent/Quality Safety Coach in Manila conducted his ship’s visit in Jakarta to ensure Frontline’s Quality Safety Campaign standards are being implemented onboard in accordance with MCRM. He sailed with us until we arrives in Surabaya, Indonesia upon completion of our maiden voyage, backing up our urge to submit an article for team telegraph. He personally was amazed on how innovative and dynamic an engine has become, from conventional type steam engines to mechanical diesel engines and now electronically

controlled diesel engines. He left us with something that we should bear in our minds; “Though bright minds cannot defy basic principles” coming from a man who has a lot of experience in the field.

Typical fuel pumps, camshaft, fuel linkages, reversing servo motor, VIT device, exhaust valve drive, driving gears are no longer required in this engine, thus it was replaced by common rails, WECS control, and fuel oil and servo oil supply units comprising of electro-hydraulic pumps and motors. Taking an edge to newer designs and lifting itself to higher pedestal of competing with other engine builders.

A brief explanatory introduction for RT-flex technology, it’s concept is based on the Wartsila common rail, with full electronic control of fuel injection, exhaust valve actuation and cylinder lubrication. It has its own program “FlexView9520” in charge for adjustment and monitoring of engine performance. It is just a click away from a normal laptop to re-adjust cylinder lubrication, fuel injection timing and exhaust valve opening and closing actuation. Amazing, isn’t it?

Fuel pumps in the supply unit deliver fuel under high pressure into the fuel oil rail via rising pipes and subsequently through injection control units (ICU) to each injection valves. Fuel oil rail contains high pressure fuel of 600-800 bar, the rail pressure is regulated depending on engine load. Meeting the demands of charterers while taking care of the owners can be achieved with proper management, maintenance and operation specifically fuel oil consumption.

Starting 1st January 2015, US implemented 0.1 sulphur content of Fuel consumption to all vessel trading in their waters. European Ports and other countries are requiring as well, therefore this design is well prepared for certain circumstances:

• Equipped with auto-change over unit to protect fuel oil pumps from damages caused by abrupt temperature changes of the fuel oil,

• It ensures the engine is always supplied with the right amount of fuel.

• It also has integrated sensors to prove the use of correct fuel to state authorities, coast guard or which would demand.

The internal monitoring cannot be manipulated for it has its history function which stores events with date and time. How good is that? Minimizing spare consumption, utilizing proper amount of fuel and incompliance with regulations.

• Failure indications with help of module LED’s

• Aux Blower request at low charge air pressure

This FCM-20 performs major role on WECS-9520 thus troubleshooting requires nothing but a plug and play system, WECS system has its FCM Online Spare that programs itself together with the working cylinders. Simply take it out and plug in. Simpler the better. Then it’s done!

Design Aspects mainly contributes:

• Higher efficiency than conventional type of engines

• Lower fuel consumption due to firm timing of injection control units

• Lower engine RPM with higher power

• Better manoeuvrability for its enhanced control system (WECS)

Markets are now requiring high performing vessels that can cope up with their demands all over the world safely and efficiently.

It might not be the top engine in the world but it is worth the catch. I can say a step ahead towards global innovation, and that’s “The Good Move!”

Flex control module

Diesel switch – auto change over valve

WECS-9520 is the core engine control, it processes all actuation regulation and control directly linked to the engine:

• Common rail monitoring and pressure regulation

• Injection and exhaust-and start valve control and monitoring

• Interfacing external systems via CAN open and MOD Bus

• Engine performance tuning, IMO setting and-monitoring

WECS-9520 has no central computer but each cylinder has its own FCM-20 (Flex Control Module) for the cylinder related and common functions:

• Fuel, Servo oil rail pressure regulation and monitoring

• Storage and processing of tuning data (IMO, engine-specific and global settings)

• Internal WECS monitoring (power supply, SW-watchdog and command linkage)

• Calculation and processing of common control variables (VIT, VEC, VEO and engine state)

• Interface to propulsion control system and to back up panels in Control Room and Local Control

STMP recently held seafarers & family outing in Palm Beach resort, Batangas Manila attended by 30 seafarers & family with Manila staff (80 participants) where all enjoyed games, swimming, bonding + get together dinner from 31st July to 1st August. Our Managing Director Alasdair Smith attended the event which made our seafarers really happy and feel that they belong to SeaTeam family.

MANILA FAMILY OUTINGby Capt. Ronaldo Maniego

Applying grease on hatch cover roller track ways instead of constant repainting.

Hatch cover roller track ways are normally painted by crew as standard procedure. However, everytime hatch covers are opened and rollers passed through these track ways, they damage the paints normally. The tendency of crew having newly painted it will not bother to check the paint being damaged and these get overlooked overtime and rust develops and rust stains manifested to the coamings.

Instead of painting, it is best to maintain greasing on these hatch cover roller track ways where the grease acts as the waterproofing from sea spray and weather, getting rid of rust and rust stains. This is normally so if done routinely.

Main engine turning gear is exposed and no covers, posing danger to crew. Posing injury to crew because of being an exposed movable machinery part. Having fabricated a protection cover will be a preventive measure.

Without covers, cylinders have no protection and are exposed to cargoes sticking on them and possibly damaging the seals, causing hydraulic cylinder leaks. With these canvas covers, they are protected especially when loading/discharging zinc or any concentrates.

Fabricated canvas covers of cargo hold hydraulic cylinders.

Statistics indicate that more than 20% of all injuries occur to those serving aboard ship for the first time and 55% of victims had served onboard less than 2 months. The fact is, newly employed young seafarers are at a much higher risk of involvement in accidents. Top dangers include:

• Slips, Trips & Falls• Improper manual handling of heavy or awkward

objects• Cuts and abrasions from hand & power tools • Burns from hot surfaces, gases, or liquids• Entanglement or pinched by machinery, doors or

hatches• Standing in the impact zone during lifting or mooring• Working on high pressure systems such as steam,

pneumatics, hydraulic or fuel systems• Tension release of springs or lines• Unsafe atmospheres in confined spaces

Everyone involved has a stake in promoting a safe and healthy working environment so it is important to understand and address the reasons why newly employed young seafarers are more vulnerable. The risk is escalated by:

• Inexperience or inadequate qualification• Lack of confidence or understanding of systems and

procedures• Lack of preparation for the job• Unwillingness to ask questions• Working alone or out of sight• Inadequate preparation for sea conditions

To address these concerns, SeaTeam has instituted a multi-tiered induction process to ensure all staff are familiar with company procedures, requirements, and safety expectations. This includes:

• All Staff are issued a Personal Copy of the SeaTeam Induction Manual for self study

• All Staff are required to Watch the SeaTeam Induction Movie to ensure basics are understood

• All Staff are to attend a Pre-Joining Safety Briefing• Safety Mentors are assigned to those serving aboard

ship for the first time• Daily Tool Box Talks are conducted every day to

explain hazards• Risk Assessment is to be a routine part of work

planning• Seniors are required to be “approachable” so that

staff are not afraid to speak up or ask questions• Dedicated Quality Safety Coaches are assigned to

monitor and follow-up safety matters on a monthly basis

Although individual safety is the responsibility of the individual, experienced hands are expected to keep an extra eye out for newly employed or first time seafarers. Marine Crew Resource Management techniques for leaders teach us to emphasize teamwork, communicate intentions, encourage staff to speak up, set a good example, and to be clear when giving orders. But also remember to assign an experienced hand to sponsor new people from the initial safety tour, through to completion of their first contract. The experience of a painful mistake is not a lesson our teams want to learn during their first contact. Be vigilant in observing the new guys; speak-up, stop and correct unsafe acts or conditions on the spot.

TEAM KSL CHINAby Capt. Niel Richie O. Arado

Quotes related to achieving company HSQE Policy statement:“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” By Aristotle

Onboard KSL China, we are striving to achieve our company’s HSQE Policy statement through constant trainings, meetings and knowledge acquisition through various materials, programs and company policies/procedures. It is by doing and performing them as per company laid out plans and matrix in a positive, committed and values driven approach to form effective working habits to the whole of the onboard team, which will translate into a strong group with character and with common visions and goals, which will then enable to realize desired results of overall safety and efficiency of operations.

The Road to Success: Strong and Dynamic Shipboard TeamSuccess often comes to those who dare to act; it seldom goes to the timid who are ever afraid of the consequences. Patience, persistence and perspiration makes an unbeatable combination for success. Destiny is not a matter of chance but it is a matter of CHOICE. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. Strong and dynamic shipboard team therefore is important for this realization.

MT FRONT CLYDE BEAT THE HEAT!by Capt S.B. Flor

After months of without going ashore, fast port turn around, soaking under the heated sun of Persian Gulf. We, officers and crew of MT Front Clyde found our own unique way to “BEAT THE HEAT”. Upon departure bound to voyage of less than a day, lead by the Master, officers and crew members gathered together at Navigation Bridge Wing, to experience our newly acquired Portable Swimming Pool to refresh and rejuvenate. People of MT Front Clyde really pleased with the Pool because they can bathe and lighten up frequently and most importantly it may build a bond on working harmoniously.

See the priceless smile of our crew members…?
