Each year we make it down the yellow brick road to December and I ask where has the time gone? Hopefully this quick summary of our successes this year makes for a good answer to that question.

2019 – The Gilmore College Year in Review1. Our 2018 Year 12’s achieved incredible results.

Ten students scored ATARs above 80 one achieving 99.70!

2. We delivered a Gilmore College developed Whole School Instructional Model. This has started to reduce the variability in instruction between classrooms throughout the school providing consistency of expectations for both staff and students.

3. Three of our teaching staff undertook the Teachwell Masterclass on High Impact Instruction.

4. Associate Professor Lorraine Hammond commenced her work assisting a small group of staff to implement evidence-based approaches in their classrooms.

5. Our VET programs are still “the envy of the world” with the school based Metals and Engineering Program Process Plant Operations Hospitality Plant Mechanic Building and Construction and Community programs being joined by a new program in Automation being run through South Metro TAFE supported by Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

6. We have another World Skills Gold Medallist with Jack Button and Maliksi Morales taking out the first and second prizes in the Western Australian competition. Jack will represent the State in the National finals to be held next August in Perth.

7. Our STAR literacy intervention program took a different direction focusing on the teaching of phonics and reading recovery with this program to be expanded in 2020.

8. More Year 9 students than previous years were able to pre-qualify for their OLNA assessments through achievement of Band 8 in NAPLAN.

9. We hosted our NAPLAN tests online for the first time with success.

10. Our Year 7 and 9 cohorts achieved NAPLAN results that exceeded the performance of like schools in all test types.

11. The initiation of Project Gilmore by our Student Services team takes a solutions focus to meeting the needs of our most vulnerable students.

12. The Positive Behaviour Support Team has shown another year of strong growth in activities initiatives and school wide approaches to teaching students correct and positive behaviour.

2

13. The delivery of a house point system as incentive for all students and development of a set of accepted staff practices aligned to our Supportive Organised Aspirational Resilient (SOAR) slogan are highlights of the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Team’s work.

14. We ended the year with a focus on domestic and family violence through the Love Bites Respectful Relationships program.

15. As usual the NAIDOC and ANZAC ceremonies held in 2019 were outstanding.

2020 ?On 26 February 2020 our school is being reviewed on its performance and improvements over the past 5 years. This review will help the school’s leadership team and staff to set our next direction. We view this as an exciting opportunity to showcase our school and dedicated staff parents/carers students and Board to the wider public education system and to act on the recommendations and advice that we might receive through this process.

Mobile Phones in Schools....off and away all dayYou may be aware of the recently announced changes to the Use of Mobile Phones in Schools policy. The short version of this policy mandated by the Department of Education is:

• Students may carry a phone to school for travel and transit purposes.

• Students may use a mobile phone in a classroom when it is directly a part of the learning and instruction taking place.

• Students who require a mobile phone to manage a medical condition are permitted to do so after negotiation with either the Community Health Nurse Learning Support Manager Student Services Manager School Psychologist or Associate Principal.

• Mobile Phones are to remain “off and away” in student school bags during the day at all other times. Students may not use a mobile phone outside of classrooms or during recess or lunch breaks. (Parents/carers who wish to contact students during the school day must do so through Student Services on 6595 2730).

We look forward to all parents and carers supporting us to implement this State wide policy from the start of the school year and thank you in advance for assisting your child to adhere to the policy.

STEM Rocket ChallengeOn 25 November four students represented the College for the regional STEM Rocket challenge.

Our team was Ivan Tamares Daniel Russell Khalin O’Reilly and Oliver Crampton. After being introduced to the other schools and told about the rules of the competition they went straight into it and started to develop ideas for their rocket.Though working together the boys worked on separate parts. Two worked on the body and nose while two worked on designing and making the fins.

They all came together and made suggestions and improvements on their design before they had their first test flight.Following the first test flight a couple of students from the other schools were surprised about the results of our first launch. There was a bit of a drama during the second launch where the rocket landed on the roof of the building across from the school! Luckily there were some contractors on hand and they were able to retrieve our rocket. The results were as follows:The winning rocket was mostly created by Ivan and Daniel with assembly help from Khalin and Oliver. The second furthest rocket was a group effort from all four students because we almost lost the first rocket! There was a box challenge which was to make a glider out of foam sheet. In this task we came third. This was made by Khalin and Oliver with some help from Ivan and Daniel.

It was a fun day and it was enjoyable working with and being challenged by the other schools on a group task. The boys who represented their schools had a fun and rewarding day.Looking forward to seeing what we can do next year. Good work Boys.

Gilmore College Student Council 2020 FundraiserOn 8 December the Student Council ran a sausage-sizzle fundraiser at Bunnings Rockingham from 8am to 4.30pm. It was a cool 24 degrees and students worked tirelessly to sell 800 bread rolls and 800 sausages (sometimes together and at other times separately). It is to be noted that vegans were not excluded by this event. There were some bread mishaps throughout the day and a bunch of drinks remained unsold on account of the cool weather.

However these minor setbacks did not stop the students from conducting themselves with utmost professionalism and cheer. Problem-solving and organisational skills were used by all to make the venture a successful one. The atmosphere was upbeat and uplifting. The fundraising process was a long one and throughout the students demonstrated support for one another organisational excellence aspirational goals and resilience. They never once let the “ball drop” so to speak whether it be before the fundraiser (prep-work and heavy-lifting) or after the fundraiser (pack-up transporting things around school). There were many people and organisations that helped make this possible and the Gilmore College Student Council would like to thank the following people/organisations for presenting them with this valuable learning experience:• Kieran Daly and People’s Produce• IGA Medina• Coles Kwinana• Woolworths Kwinana for their donations and

supportThe Student Council would like to issue a special thank-you to Bunnings (Rockingham) for being so helpful accommodating and supportive. Their facilitation of such community events go a long way towards improving outcomes for everyone as a whole. We would also like to thank Spudshed Baldivis for their kind offer of support. The Gilmore College Flourish Café staff also deserve a special mention for providing us with storage-solution options.

The funds collected will go towards improving outcomes for our students and it is nice to know that there is so much community support available for students to better themselves. The Student Council will also like to thank everyone in school for assisting in one way or another. All in all it was an enriching experience that allowed students to learn develop and extend their skill-sets whilst also having fun.

Introduction to Leadership WorkshopIn week 7 of Term 4 the Student Councillors attended an Introduction to Leadership Workshop facilitated by the City of Kwinana as part of their Leadership Youth Respect in Kwinana (LyriK) Programme. Their facilitator Arbie Pattiselanno was engaging and effective. This was evident in the way he set up activities that developed camaraderie and understanding amongst the Student Council Members.

Important lessons about leadership were learned that Wednesday morning. Students were inspired to reflect on their own personal leadership capacities long after the session had ended. Participants were invited to share aspects of their identity with the group through an ice-breaker activity and this reinforced the fact that a team is always made up of people with diverse needs values personalities skills and work-styles. Students were also invited to reflect on how their own personal identities and the identities of others could come together effectively in the pursuit of a common goal. It was reiterated that everyone in a team had a ‘voice’ and that leaders should listen to and acknowledge all voices. One interesting point that was brought to the attention of the Councillors was that there are often people on a team who are naturally quiet or choose to remain silent. Through an interesting activity that involved balancing a thin stick as a group using only the tips of their fingers the councillors

A team is always made up of people with diverse needs values personalities skills and work-styles.

were taught that good leaders have to go out of their way to seek the opinions of the quieter and less-forthcoming members. They were made to realise that this was also an important aspect of leadership. As much as individual identities were celebrated and acknowledged during the session the Councillors were also reminded that a good leader always puts the needs of a group ahead of their own personal needs. Student Councillors were encouraged to step away from the ‘Me’ mentality and to step into the ‘Us’ and You’ headspace in order to be a good leader. In summary it was an enlightening session with activities that highlighted essential leadership qualities. It was a very valuable developmental opportunity for the Student Councillors and they would like to thank the City of Kwinana LyriK programme and Arbie for making it happen.

Goldie Locks Vs State of Western AustraliaIn Humanities and Social Science (HASS) during week 7 classes were demonstrating their fundamental human rights by participating in a fair trial.

In Civics and Citizenship students demonstrated their understanding of the Western Australian Trial Process and the rights of the accused in a criminal law case. In the case of Goldie Locks vs the State of Western Australia students were able to see the role of the jury the presumption of innocence the burden of proof and the rule of the law in action. Our unbiased jury was then able to decide the verdict and the judge handed down a sentence to Goldie Locks. We then compared this to a Medieval Trial by Ordeal specifically Trial by Fire. Students should be commended on their willing participation and enthusiasm to seek justice in the mock trials.

The Gilmore College Historical Committee

(GCHC) was sent on a mission on the second week

of Term 4 to help with the restoration of historical artefacts at Smirk’s Cottage.

We were happy to do this because the Kwinana Heritage Group who looks after Smirk’s Cottage helped us with our exhibition for the Kwinana Spring Festival. Smirk’s Cottage is a museum filled with objects of significance from Kwinana’s past. It allows us all the opportunity to view our history and appreciate the journey of our ancestors. The GCHC restored some of the artefacts that are displayed around the museum grounds. Smirk’s Cottage is a beautiful place and we encourage all Kwinana residents to go and visit this local treasure.

Resource Technology Showcase 2019On Thursday 28 November students from Career and Enterprise journeyed to the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre to preview mining technology innovation at the Resources Technology Showcase 2019.

Australia’s resource sector is world renowned in its use of augmented reality virtual reality robotics and autonomous vehicles. Companies including BHP Rio Tinto Woodside Chevron Shell Citic Pacific and Fortescue Metals Group gave a behind-the-scenes account of how they see technology changing their businesses in years to come. Students were able see how the technology and valuable skills they are learning in the classroom are shaping the future of the workplace.

Students had been prepared to come across protestors as more than 200 anti-climate change people gathered in Perth CBD on Wednesday outside the major resources industry conference but were able to attend the Showcase safely and without interruption.

Volleyball Western Australia Schools CupThe Gilmore College Volleyball Program took 14 teams to participate at Volleyball Western Australia Schools Cup. It was an exciting time for the Year 10 teams as it was the first time Gilmore College had students compete in the Honours Division.

The Year 10 female team played some very close games however they couldn’t get the job done against Rossmoyne or Greenwood. The Year 10 male team exceeded all expectations playing at an extremely high level and eventually losing out in the semi-final to Aquinas College. The Year 9 female teams performed extremely well. One of the “A” division teams and the “B” division team lost narrowly in the third set of the semi-final. Finally the Year 8 male and female “A” division teams performed exceptionally with both teams progressing to finals without dropping a set. Both teams went on to be crowned champions after winning their semi-final and grand finals convincingly. During the presentations the year 8 “A” division male Eruel Castro and female “A” division Rose Da Silva were named Most Valuable Player of their respective divisions.

Martial Artists Against Bullying Martial Artists Against Bullying has been continuing into Term 4 with 7.6 Science.

Students have had the opportunity to work with Sensei Don McKay to improve their self-confidence and knowledge of self-defence. Students have spent this term learning about their bodies and a kata called Sanchin.

The origins of Sanchin can even be traced to the breathing exercises performed by Buddhist monks at the original Shaolin Monastery. These breathing exercises were developed by Bodhidharma (Daruma) the transmitter of Zen to China to provide a regimen for the monks so that they would keep being strong and healthy during their time at the monastery. It was a kata to unify the mind body and spirit.7.6 Science has immensely enjoyed their two terms of the program working with Sensei Don and are happy with their improved resiliency and new skills they will have with them for life.

Kanyana visits Gilmore College

On Tuesday 10 December volunteers from Kanyana’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre came to visit students in 8.1 8.2 8.4 and 8.5 Science.

They showcased Henry the forest red tail black cockatoo Smuggles the blue tongue lizard and host of other animals including an echidna

tawny frogmouth Stimson’s python and a woylie. We learnt about animal adaptations concerning

their diet body coverings and reproductive systems. Students were able to pat the echidna blue tongue lizard and Stimson’s python and had many photo opportunities with all the animals. It was an incredible experience and everyone left the room with a smile on their face.

Peel Zoo In what is becoming a tradition Miss Doomen and Miss Jancey went again to Peel Zoo in Term 4 and encountered another ridiculous day of heat.

This time they took Mr Reiss Miss Collard and two classes of Year 7s down to Pinjarra for an awesome day out. They had a “behind the scenes” reptile tour and then spent the rest of the day walking around the zoo feeding kangaroos talking to cockatoos and spotting many animals including including bettongs Tasmanian devils dingoes and quokkas that braved the heat. The students were amazingly well behaved and respectful and enjoyed themselves immensely.

The students showed great enthusiasm for the course and persevered to complete bikes for either themselves or charity. The students had to partner up learn the skills to put all components of the bike together and finish it off with a unique spray paint. The students involved represented the College very well. The Dismantle instructors stated that they were able to have some great conversations about their current school engagement and future plans. They hoped that staff at the College had noticed classroom flow-on benefits from their engagement in a new challenge with us.

Theatre Response GroupControl FreakIn week 9 the Year 9s had an incursion it was called a play by the Theatre Response Group called Control Freak.

The purpose of this incursion was to educate the Year 9 students about domestic violence and healthy relationships.

This incursion taught us how to identify warning signs and solve issues before it gets out of hand.

Some students have been offered positions to work at the Dismantle headquarters organising the equipment for other programs. Adam Tobin was given the opportunity to work on a gardening program that may lead into holiday work.Charleah Dubious Vaughn has been offered a placement on week long adventure hike in Tasmania in 2020.The school is very proud of all the participants who took part in the Bike Rescue we hope they have gained some valuable experience which will help them in the future.

Bike Rescue 2019 Participants Term 3 - Kyle McNae, Blake Marirea, Adam Tobin, Lachlan Strahan, Stuart Peterson, Ethan Knight, Dominico Ramini, Wyatt Haji Ahmed, Michael Murcott and Braedyn Haywood. The Theatre Response Group did an excellent job during the performance, they brought the story they were portraying to life. We then discussed the issue that was presented

and talked about ways to solve it in a calm manner. It was a great performance and was very educational I would recommend this to be performed at every high school in Western Australia.

KEYS Workshop Overview

Circle of Security - For parents of children 0-18years (2 hrs x 8 weeks) Circle of Security is an early intervention workshop for parents and carers, which focuses on the child/parent rela-tionship and how to create a secure attachment. Our trained Facilitators work with parents and care givers to help them:

• Understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read their emotional needs • Support their child’s ability to successfully manage emotions • Enhance the development of their child's self esteem

1-2-3 Magic & Emotion Coaching - For parents of children 3-12 years (2.5 hrs x 3 weeks) 1-2-3 Magic & Emotion Coaching is a parenting workshop which gives parents and caregivers a simple and effective ap-proach to discipline 2 - 12 year olds. It provides parents with the knowledge and practical skills to set limits confidently and calmly when required and the ability to follow through with reasonable consequences.

Protective Behaviours Overview - For parents of children 0-18 years (2.5 hours)

The Protective Behaviours program is a proactive approach to provide children, teens and vulnerable people with the skills and strategies to recognise when they are feeling unsafe and where to go to for help. Delivered in a safe format, this program is designed to leave parents feeling positive about equipping their children with positive life skills, such as asser-tiveness, emotional literacy and problem solving. These skills assist children to better cope with anxiety and know when to take risks, where to go for help and how to speak up against peer pressure, bullying and abuse.

Take a Stand on Bullying – for parents of children aged 5 - 17 (2 hours) Take a Stand on Bullying is a parenting workshop specifically designed for parents of school aged children 9aged 5 – 17). This introductory workshop identifies bullying behaviours and offers a range of strategies for parents to emotionally sup-port and advocate for their child whether the child is experiencing or exhibiting bullying behaviours.

Sensory Kids - For Parents of children 0 -17 years (2 hours)

While we all have our sensory preferences, some children can experience difficulty in organising and responding to sen-sory input, which can lead to learning difficulties, developmental delay, anxiety and stress. This session is designed to inform parents as to how they can best support their children to organise sensory input, how it can affect children who have difficulties with organising sensory input, basic strategies and coping mechanisms for parents, when to seek further support and correct referral pathways for support and therapy if required.

Safe Play – Understanding sexual development and how to respond for Parents of children 0 – 17 (2 hours)

It can be difficult for parents and caregivers to know how to respond to sexual behaviour in children. This information session will provide an overview of what is considered normal and age appropriate, which behaviours need to be moni-tored more closely and which behaviours are a cause for concern. Utilising strategies from the Protective Behaviours framework we will also discuss appropriate responses to each.
