I am Mariella Spiteri Cefai and am honoured that for the fourth consecutive year I am the Vocal Director. I am a music teacher and mother of two. Besides being a music graduate from the University of Malta, I completed diplomas in piano performance and musicianship from the London College of Music and the Trinity College of Music. The stage always fascinated me and since a young age I took part in various plays, musicals, operas and concerts. Now that I am on the other side of the production line I am very proud of what the company of this musical has accomplished.

Theatre director Chris Gatt is as much at home directing Shakespeare as he is directing a classic rock ’n’ roll musical like Grease. Previous musicals include Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, High School Musical, Little Shop of Horrors and West Side Story. Other productions include Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Pinter’s Old Times and Philip Ridley’s Mercury Fur. Comedies include ‘Allo, ‘Allo, Minn Wara iz-Zipp and Stones in His Pockets.

In 2016 and 2017 Chris Gatt was the driving force in the production of Teatru Astra’s musicals Grease and Evita, which he directed.

The Creative Team

I am proud to be leading once again a musical, my fourth one, at the Astra. This year, we are taking the musical project in Gozo up to a higher level, a significant achievement for voluntary-run organisation. I continue to cherish the relationship with the theatre and its community which now dates back since 2013 - when the first edition of RockAstra - a concert by the La Stella Philharmonic Band, took place. This was followed by another four most successful editions and three musicals: Grease (2016), Evita (2017) and Jesus Christ Superstar (2018).

At present, I am the executive chairman of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. My musical calling was at the age of 11 when I commenced my studies on the trumpet and eventually joined the same national orchestra for a stint of 16 years. I am proud to have conceived and led the National Orchestra goes Pop, Manuel Theatre Swing Concert, and the highly successful Rockestra projects.

Francesco is thrilled to be returning to Teatru Astra and to be choreographing this year’s musical production. Francesco’s is known on the island as both a choreographer and a performer. His stage experiences include a touring season of Broadway hit musicals around the United Arab Emirates, as well as performances aboard of Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

Locally, his choreographic works include: The Best of Broadway (Pjazza Teatru Rjal 2014); La Traviata (Pjazza Teatru Rjal 2014); Romeo and Juliet (Sant Anton Gardens 2015); Robin Hood and Babes in the Wood (Manoel Theatre 2015); TMYT’s Notte Bianca (Valletta 2015); Un-believe it! (MFCC 2016); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (San Anton Gardens 2016); Cinderella (MFCC 2017); Jesus Christ Superstar (Teatru Astra 2018); Don Giovanni (Manoel Theatre 2018); MAMMA MIA! (MCC 2018), As You Like It (San Anton Gardens 2018), Jack and the Beanstalk (MFCC 2018) Later on this year, Francesco will be choreographing MADC’s Aladdin (MFCC 2020).

I started dancing from the age of 3 and continued to pursue my passion within the University of Malta by achieving both a Master’s degree in Performance Studies (Dance) and a Bachelors (Hons.) Dance Studies (MELIT). I am a qualified Ballet teacher by profession within the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. I teach RAD and creative dance within the Visual and Performance Arts School. Additionally, I am also the Head of Department of the YADA Dance Academy in Gozo. I perform, choreograph and direct several musicals, dance performances, community and inter-generational work, re-enactments and dance films in Gozo, Malta, London, and Leeds. For the third consecutive year, I am really honored to be part in another thrilling musical by the Astra Theatre.

I am Sylvana Cini, 28 years old. My profession is of a Music teacher, and for the last 7 years I have been teaching Music at the Gozo College. I’m the Director of the Piccole Stelle Choir within Teatru Astra, an energetic choir made up of 33 children aged between 5 and 13 years. I’m honored to be part of this production and am sure that the talented cast will thrill the audience during all performances.

I am thrilled to be performing in Gozo for the first time with such a talented and dedicated team. Having grown up in Malta and having spent ten years working as an actor in the West End and Europe, it’s great to be back on the local stage. By day I work with Switch, a Maltese Brand and Digital agency and I try and fit as much theatre work into my spare time as possible. This show is for all those wonderful people who give up their spare time for projects like these, strengthening valuable communities like this one at Teatru Astra.

I am Chris Dingli and I’m an actor, writer and comedian. I trained in London and spent the last decade living and working as an actor in the UK. In Malta, I host a daily radio show on XFM, perform stand-up comedy, and work as an actor on stage, film and TV. I’m very happy to be returning to Teatru Astra after last year’s Jesus Christ Superstar, in which I played King Herod, for another exciting production with this wonderful company.

I have taken part in various musical productions namely: The Scarlet Pimpernel, Grease, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fiddler on the Roof, Scrooge and past productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I work within a leading company in the Food and Beverage distribution as a Regional Sales Supervisor in Gozo. I am also an active choir member in SCJ choir where I sing in the bass section. I was part also of the cast of Evita held two years ago on the same stage and now really looking forward for this year’s edition of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat which is also celebrating it’s 50th anniversary.

I am 22 years of age and this year I am very excited doing the part the Baker and of Gad, one of the brothers. I am part of the Laudate Pueri choir at St. George’s Basilica in Victoria. I took part in other musicals like Evita, Mulan and last year’s unforgettable experience of Jesus Christ Superstar. I am very lucky of being part of this large and hardworking production. Denise MerciecaWifeI am currently a student nurse at the University of Malta and a Musical Theatre dance teacher at StageCoach Malta. I am thrilled to be part of this production and this will be my fourth musical as part of the main cast amongst many other productions. I started training in the three disciplines at a very young age and now I’m currently finishing my vocational dance exams to start my Diplomas and attend vocal training under the direction of Pamela Bezzina. I play the piano and the trumpet with some local bands and also sing in a local choir. I am looking forward for the wonderful production of the classical musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

I am Marvic Cini and I am 32 years old. By profession I am an accounts and administration clerk. I have been singing since the age of 15 with SCJ choir and took part in various musicals, operettas as well as concerts and other such performances. I mostly have been involved in performing polyphonic pieces both sacred and profane and on some occasions I also sang as a soloist. I am looking forward for my third experience with Astra Theatre and my third performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. I’m very happy to work with such a talented cast and I’m sure it will be a blast!

I am currently a nursing student at the University of Malta. While I am very pleased to be portraying one of the brothers in this production, this is not my first time as a performer. I have formed part of multiple local productions including Mamma Mia and Cats as well as two pantomimes at the Manoel Theatre. I have also been attending professional singing lessons for about six years, under the direction of Pamela Bezzina. I was also a contestant in this year’s X Factor Malta. All in all, I look forward to be performing with such an exceptional cast.

Working as an IT Administrator, Theatre was always my hobby since a I was a child. I am looking forward to participate in my second production here, at Teatru Astra after last year’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Great to work with a wonderful group in this energetic musical.

I am Karen Attard from Gozo, a primary teacher by profession currently working with children with special needs. Music has always been one of my passions and for the past 18 years I have been forming part of a well known choir here in Gozo. As a student I used to take part in musicals and now I’m really looking forward for my first experience with Teatru Astra in such a magical musical.

I am Leanne, a Gozitan and an auditor by profession. Since a young age I had a passion for music and acting, though in recent years I have been focusing more on choral music, as a member of one of the renowned local choirs. This is my first time working with Astra Theatre. I am glad to have joined such a dynamic bunch of people. Being part of this production has been an amazing journey.

I am delighted to be part of another musical after 6 years, especially here in this production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

I am happy to be again part of this production at Teatru Astra. At the age of 10, I started my musical education: I play the flute and am also a member of the Laudate Pueri Choir. For the past 20 years, I participated as a choir member in all the operas staged at Teatru Astra. I also had the opportunity to experience musical theatre since Teatru Astra ventured into musicals. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the third musical I am participating in, after Jesus Christ Superstar (2018) and Evita (2017). This time I am proud to be on stage with my girls, Karolynn and Kate who are featuring in the children’s choir.

I am very pleased to have been entrusted by the theatre management, to lead the stage construction of the musical Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I have once again put in my experience in metal working into this project, which is one of the greatest projects I have ever been involved in. Like last year in Jesus Christ Superstar this was another great experience. This year’s production follows my involvement in a number of operas and the previous musicals held at the Teatru Astra.

I am a nurse by profession with a considerable experience on the stage and wardrobe department of the Teatru Astra. My first work in the theatre was within the Club’s youth movement. Together with Miriam, we have worked on the designs many ideas to make this musical another success. I look forward for another successful production at the Astra, on the footsteps of the ones I have been involved in our theatre, namely Grease, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and also a number of operas I was involved in.

The Production Team

Joseph CauchiScenographerMy involvement at Teatru Astra goes back to a number of years and am pleased to give my input also to this musical. As scenographer at Teatru Astra I was trusted with the scenography of opera productions for the last decades and this has given me the opportunity to work with great artistic directors, the most recent being Enrico Stinchelli with whom I will once again be involved for the forthcoming Il Trovatore. Apart from my artistic works, including painting, sculpture and design I am also an officer at the Culture Department within the Ministry for Gozo and a local councillor at the Munxar Local Council. This year I was also awarded with the Ħaddiem tas-Sena for creativity within the Ministry for Gozo.

I am Miriam, mother of Gorgianne and Joseph, executive secretary at the Rabat Citta’ Victoria Local Council and very happy to be part of this fourth musical at Teatru Astra. Together with George Camilleri I coordinate the wardrobe department. I have had interest in costumes since a young age and was actively involved in the costume production of the Teatru Astra very successful past years’ carnival companies. I am confident that with the help of my team, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be yet another successful musical at Teatru Astra.

I am humbled and honoured to have been entrusted the role of a production manager by Teatru Astra for this year’s musical. I am a Biology teacher by profession but the theatre and the Arts have always intrigued me. I’ve been working in stage and props management teams in the local arena for the past two years. I am confident, given the expertise of each department, that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat will be another successful and mesmerising highlight of musical theatre at Teatru Astra!

This is the second time I am being involved in a production at Teatru Astra as a production assistant - and this was a learning and wonderful experience. I participated in a number of operas at Teatru Astra and also in the recent musicals. I work within a local government department and enjoy every opportunity to be involved in cultural and artistic events organised by our theatre.

I am pleased to have contributed my over-20 years of backstage-technical experience at the Teatru Astra to this musical. Working with director Chris Gatt, for me was also an enriching experience and will benefit not just my colleagues in the technical team but also the audience of this musical. I am the proud father of Elena, who is following my and her grandfather’s footsteps in her dedication to the theatre. I work as a senior official in the logistics department of a local manufacturing company.

Hi, I am very grateful to be part of such a fantastic team for the musical, Joseph and Technicolour Dreamcoat. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Malta with a Diploma in Design Foundation studies but continued to branch my studies in the field of dance, graduating in 2016 with a Bachelor (Hons) in Dance Studies. My growing interest in choreography led to obtaining a Masters of Fine Arts in Choreography from the University of Roehampton in London, in 2018. I have had the opportunity to work alongside both international and local artists as well as present works in conferences and festivals. This production will be brilliant and I am honoured to have been part of such an experience!

I’ve been rolling out most of Teatru Astra’s artwork for the last eleven years. The graphics are the first to be developed in the production timeline, even before decisions on the cast and producer are made. It takes a high level of imagination to fast forward yourself onto a full stage to successfully create the final design. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been a new challenge; we were only provided with very vague guidelines. Nonetheless, my original logo and colours were not only approved in London but also used in adverts inside the West End circle. Keep an eye out for more creations... 2020 will see us accomplish even more.

I am proud to be managing the lights for another major production at Teatru Astra. It is an occasion yes, to work on the job I love, but also an opportunity to work with so many dedicated friends. I have been working at Nexos for the last 10 years - where I started as an apprentice. Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is my fourth musical at the Astra. I have also been involved in four operas at Astra. Work with talented directors and colleagues is always a rewarding experience.

Joseph and The Technicolor Dreamcoat has been the perfect musical to express our artistic graphical visuals. It has been such an inspirational journey designing the video graphics making technicolor dreams literally come true in this spectacular display of visuals using the latest technology with laser projection.

I am pleased that for the second consecutive year I am serving the Teatru Astra musical production in the role of the booking officer. My involvement within our community started a couple of years ago within St George’s Basilica, were I am a proud leader in the 234Group, our parish youth group. Theatre making and particularly the backstage and its heightened energy levels attract me. During this production I am also giving a helping hand as a backstage assistant. I look forward to start selling tickets again for next year’s musical.
