Old Friends, New Friends at Homecoming 2012Homecoming 2012 at Arkansas Tech University was a

reminder that the only constant in life is change.

Sometimes change is for the better. It was great to see

so many young alumni back on campus and enjoying the

various events during Homecoming. There is nothing more

gratifying than watching our student leaders from recent

years become alumni leaders.

With an involved and growing young alumni base, the

Tech tradition will be in good hands for future generations.

Sometimes change makes us sad.

Invariably each year during Homecoming, we look

around and take note of the familiar faces that are no

longer with us. It was especially poignant for many of us

that this was our first Tech Homecoming in almost 60 years

without the late Coach Don Sevier. He, and many others,

were missed and fondly remembered.

The names and faces change as the years and

decades go by, but our shared affection for Arkansas Tech

carries on. It is perpetuated by individuals with a shared

commitment to ensure that current and future students

enjoy the educational opportunities at Arkansas Tech that

made such a large difference in our lives.

That commitment to Arkansas Tech by its alumni and

friends is demonstrated in many ways.

This issue of Tech Action includes the names of those

who made contributions to the Tech Loyalty Fund during

the 2011-12 fiscal year. We thank those individuals for their

financial support of our university’s educational mission.

Equally valuable is the support we receive from alumni

who come back for events on campus, tell a prospective

student about the benefits of a Tech education or wear

their Wonder Boys and Golden Suns T-shirts with pride.

We are an institution of significance within our state

and our region. If you are an involved alumnus or friend of

Arkansas Tech, we appreciate your willingness to give back.

If you haven’t been involved with Tech for a while, come

join us. We can always make more room on the bandwagon.

The best days for Arkansas Tech are still to come.

Lynsie Whitlow is living proof that Arkansas Tech

University has become an institution of choice for many

of our state’s brightest students.

“I decided to come to Arkansas Tech when I was

in seventh grade,” said Whitlow. “My dream was

always Tech. It means everything to me. Graduating,

finishing toward the top of my class and having a great

experience were all my goals. Arkansas Tech has given

me all of those opportunities and so many more. I had

a chance to meet the dean of my college the first week

of classes as a freshman. Opportunities like that are

why Tech has meant the world to me.”

Whitlow, a junior from Alma, is the first president of

a new student organization that seeks to build upon the

enthusiasm that current Arkansas Tech students have

for their university.

The Arkansas Tech University Student Alumni

Association was founded by action of the Tech Board

of Trustees on Aug. 17, 2012. In its first semester on

campus, the Student Alumni Association is already

among the largest registered student organizations on

campus with more than 200 members.

As defined in its organizational document, the

Arkansas Tech Student Alumni Association “shall work

in cooperation with the Tech administration and current

students to uphold the current traditions of Arkansas

Tech University while furthering their knowledge of the

Arkansas Tech Alumni Association.”

The Arkansas Tech Student Alumni Association has

six stated goals:

1. Promote the spirit, pride and traditions of

Arkansas Tech University.

2. Provide opportunities for students to develop

leadership skills as a member of the Student Alumni

Association Executive Board.

3. Promote greater interaction between students

and alumni.

4. Build awareness, understanding and support for

the Arkansas Tech University Alumni Association.

5. Provide education relating to the importance of

philanthropy at Arkansas Tech University through the

Arkansas Tech University Foundation.

6. Develop a strong group of engaged alumni.

For more information, call (479) 968-0242 or send

e-mail to [email protected].

Tech adds alumni chapter for River ValleyThe Arkansas Tech University Alumni Association

has expanded its outreach in the Fort Smith region with

the creation of the Arkansas Tech River Valley Alumni

Chapter.

A group of 11 founding members gathered to

officially set the chapter in motion on Thursday, Aug. 9.

Bob Moody of Fort Smith will serve as the first

president of the River Valley Alumni Chapter.

Other officers include vice president Tracey Geren of

Fort Smith, secretary Amanda Daniels of Fort Smith and

treasurer Norma Meares of Fort Smith.

The River Valley Chapter is Tech’s second alumni

chapter. The Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter, which currently

has more than 50 members, was established in 2011.

Homecoming 2012

Neither wind nor cold nor rain could stop Homecoming 2012 at Arkansas Tech University.

Alumni and friends turned out in big numbers for the Homecoming Golf Classic and the Ladies Champagne Bingo Luncheon. As always, the Hall of Distinction reunion dinner was a gathering of many of the most esteemed and loyal members of the Tech Family.

Saturday brought more alumni events, the Homecoming parade on campus and the annual Alumni T Club meeting.

It all led up to the crowning of senior Alyssa Verkamp of Charleston as Homecoming queen 2012 and a 45-38 Wonder Boys’ victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The weather could have been better, but nothing could have beaten the fellowship and good times at Homecoming 2012.

Homecoming Golf Classic

Friday, October 5Russellville Country Club

The three-man team of Jim Gray, Tommy Hindsman and

Bob Whorton fired a 15-under par round of 56 to win the

2012 Arkansas Tech University Homecoming Golf Classic at

Russellville Country Club on Friday, Oct. 5.

Gray/Hindsman/Whorton finished two strokes clear of the

field, which included 32 teams and a total of 96 individuals

playing in support of the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association

Scholarship.

Proceeds from the Homecoming Golf Classic have helped

the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association fund more than

$37,000 in scholarships over the past two years.

The winning team made 15 birdies and three pars. They

finished strong with three consecutive birdies.

The team of Scott Dorminy, Bryan Fisher and Heath Styles

finished second with a round of 58. Third place went to Will

Berry, Matt McCoy and Ed McSpadden. They fired a 59.

The shot of the day was executed by Kyle Johnson, who

holed out his team’s second shot from 160 yards away on

the par-5 17th hole for a double eagle.

Closest to the hole competitions were won by Eric

Laffoon on the seventh hole and Tom Wald on the 11th hole.

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.”

— William James

The alumni and friends recognized in the following

pages are making a difference through their gifts in

support of Arkansas Tech students. Several years ago, we

named our annual giving program the Tech Loyalty Fund

because those who provide much needed private funding

on an annual basis are expressing their loyalty and

commitment in a tangible way. We appreciate them and

the name is a tribute to them.

Arkansas Tech continues to grow and prosper thanks

to the vision and dedication of our faculty, administration,

staff, students and donors.

The significance of private giving cannot be

overstated. There is no gift too small, because every

gift makes a difference. The most important thing is

participation.

For every name on this list, we have many others who

have not yet joined us in our efforts. Many still believe

that because we are a public institution we receive the

funding we need from the state. That simply is not the

case.

As we grow, the percentage of state funding decreases

because we must spread the same amount of funding

over an increasing student population. In the 2011-12

academic year, our state funding provided only 40 cents of

every dollar for the unrestricted educational and general

operating budget.

Students seek a quality education, and providing that

education is the mission we strive to fulfill every day. Not

only for them, but for every person and community they

will impact during their lives.

Private gifts fund scholarship assistance, give students

opportunities to take part in national competitions and

regional meetings and provide resources for the purchase

of supplies and equipment for academic departments and

athletics.

Reserve your spot on next year’s donor roll by making

your gift today. It’s easy, especially by using our secure

online giving site: www.atu.edu/givetotech

If you prefer to give by check, make it payable to the

Arkansas Tech University Foundation and mail it to: 8820

Tech Lane, Russellville, AR 72801. Bank draft is also an

option.

Call (479) 968-0400 for more details. Contributions

in support of Arkansas Tech that are made through the

Foundation are considered charitable contributions for tax

purposes. Consult your financial advisor or tax preparer to

find out how this might benefit you.

Jayne Jones

Named in honor of the eighth president of Arkansas Tech University, the J.W. Hull Society was formed to recognize our alumni and friends who have given cumulative gifts of $50,000 or more during their lifetime. We are thankful for their continued support.

Contact: Dana Moseley, Director of Gift Planning, (479) 964-0532 or [email protected] to recognize our alumni and friends who have invested in the future of Arkansas Tech University through their wills, trusts, or estate plans.

We gratefully recognize the following donors who made Tech and Tech students a priority in their giving.

Tech students will be making calls during the Tech Loyalty Fund Phonathon

in February and March of 2013. Student callers enjoy visiting with Tech alumni and

friends to update our records, talk about the great things happening at Tech and ask

for support of the Tech Loyalty Fund, Tech’s annual giving program.

Don’t miss your chance to talk to a Tech student and find out more about what

makes Tech a great place to learn!

The Final MileMcClain, Straight share achievement at commencement

There is only one name on the degree, but there is

no question that the graduation celebrated by Phillip

McClain and Susan Straight at John E. Tucker Coliseum

on Saturday, Aug. 11, was a team effort.

McClain, 47 of Russellville, earned his Bachelor of

Arts degree in rehabilitation science from Arkansas Tech

University. He was among 200 graduates recognized

during the 2012 summer commencement ceremony.

There by his side, just as she has been throughout

their journey to graduation together, was Straight. She

is McClain’s direct support provider from Friendship

Community Services.

Straight pushed McClain’s wheelchair around the

outside corridor of Tucker Coliseum, onto the floor of

the arena and sat just to his left as the names of the

other graduates were read. Then, when it was McClain’s

turn to approach the podium, they accepted the round

of applause they earned.

“We’ve been coming to campus together for more

than six years,” said Straight. “We’ve checked over a

lot of homework together and listened to recordings of

a lot of lectures to reach this point. Classes are often

only 10 minutes apart, so we have raced through the

halls of these buildings many times. It’s a good feeling

because we knew he could do it.”

And when Straight references, “we,” she is not only

talking about the two of them. Her husband, Daniel,

has also been an important part of McClain’s path to

college graduation.

“They have been more than a family to me,” said

McClain when asked about the Straights.

McClain said that another member of the Friendship

staff — Cristy Keele — motivated him to study

rehabilitation science.

“She was an inspiration to me,” said McClain of

Keele. “Anything she or her husband could do to help

me, they did it. She led me down the right path. She

has helped a lot of people, and I wanted to be like her.”

Among the other supporters that McClain

mentioned were his professors at Arkansas Tech and

the staff members in the Arkansas Tech Office of

Testing and Disability Services.

“They bent over backwards for me,” said McClain.

“They made me comfortable.”

With his degree in hand, McClain’s future career

plans will include an effort to give back to the field of

rehabilitation science.

“I’ll go back to where I started at Star Industries and

let the guys there congratulate me for a few weeks,”

said McClain on graduation Saturday. “Then I want to

find a job that will allow me to do what I do best —

help people.”

Rehabilitation science program earns accreditationArkansas Tech University has learned its

rehabilitation science program has been granted

accreditation by the Council on Rehabilitation

Education (CORE) as part of its charter accreditation

class.

CORE first offered undergraduate accreditation

this past year. Tech is one of only eight undergraduate

rehabilitation programs to have earned accreditation.

28 Tech Action 10,950 Students, One MissionFocus on graduation rates yields results at Tech

Fourteen years and counting.

That is the unprecedented streak

of consecutive record enrollments

at Arkansas Tech University after the

institution announced that its fall

2012 enrollment is 10,950 students.

Enrollment at Arkansas Tech has

increased by 4.8 percent over the

past 12 months.

Arkansas Tech has 8,917 students

on its main campus in Russellville and

2,033 students on its Ozark campus.

Enrollment at Arkansas Tech has

grown by 158 percent since 1997.

A then school-record 4,840

students enrolled at the university in

fall 1999.

Enrollment has increased ever

since.

Arkansas Tech went over 6,000

students for the first time in 2003

and the milestones have continued.

Tech surpassed 7,000 students

in 2006; 8,000 students in 2009;

9,000 students in 2010; and 10,000

students in 2011.

“There is no question that

increasing the percentage of our

adult population that holds a college

degree is the key to economic

development in Arkansas,” said Dr.

Robert C. Brown, who is in his 20th

year as Arkansas Tech president. “At

Arkansas Tech University, that is a

realization that we made long ago

and we have worked ever since to

meet that objective.

“Our enrollment growth is an

indication that our constituents

find value and quality in return for

their educational dollar at Arkansas

Tech,” continued Brown. “The more

telling fact is that our increases in

degree production have outpaced our

increases in enrollment growth. That

is a testament to the academic ability

of the students choosing Arkansas

Tech and to the outstanding work by

my faculty colleagues.”

Arkansas Tech awarded more

than 2,000 degrees for the first time

in school history during the 2011-

12 academic year. Annual degree

production at Arkansas Tech has

increased by 151 percent since the

year 2000, while enrollment has

grown by 112 percent over that same

time frame.

Page 29: Tech Action Autumn 2012

Today’s Tech

29Autumn 2012

With a graduation rate of 42.7

percent, Arkansas Tech ranks No. 2

among all four-year public colleges

and universities in Arkansas.

Arkansas Tech has achieved that

track record while maintaining the

most affordable tuition and fees

structure among the five largest

public universities in the state

and while ranking last among all

Arkansas four-year universities in

state funding distribution per full-

time equivalent student.

“In a world where efficiency is

increasingly important, Arkansas

Tech continues to do more with

less,” said Brown.

And the “more” extends beyond

the number of students enrolled

and the number of graduates.

Arkansas Tech was the first

university in the state to fully

implement Act 747 of 2011.

That state law that requires

the reduction of applicable

baccalaureate degree programs to a

maximum of 120 credit hours.

Tech continues to add to its list

of accredited programs, including

many in the science, technology,

engineering and mathematics

(STEM) fields thought to be critical

to growing the state’s economy.

Within the past 15 months,

Tech received reaffirmation of

accreditation from The Higher

Learning Commission (HLC) of

the North Central Association of

Colleges and Schools (NCACS).

In a statement of affiliation

status for Arkansas Tech, HLC

noted that no further reports are

required and that no other campus

visits concerning accreditation from

the NCACS are scheduled before

the next comprehensive evaluation

in 2020-2021.

“This is the cleanest bill of

health that The Higher Learning

Commission can give to a

university,” said Brown. “To receive

a report of this nature with no

conditions and no interim reports

is virtually unheard of.”

Included in the fall 2012

student body at Arkansas Tech

in Russellville are 1,501 first-time

freshmen.

The Arkansas Tech Class of

2016 completed high school with a

cumulative grade point average of

3.23 and an average ACT score of

22.

This marks the 18th consecutive

year in which the Arkansas Tech

freshman class has beaten the

national average on the ACT exam.

For more information about

Arkansas Tech University, visit

www.atu.edu.

As the Arkansas Tech University

Class of 2016 begins its journey

to college graduation, many of

those freshmen are majoring in the

science, technology, engineering

and mathematics (STEM) fields

believed to be critical to Arkansas’

economic development during the

21st century.

Nursing, engineering, bio-

medical, early childhood education

and management and marketing are

the five most popular major fields of

study among freshmen at Arkansas

Tech that have declared a major.

While the number of STEM

students is growing, the largest

group of freshmen year in and year

out is the undeclared population.

Shauna Donnell, assistant

vice president for enrollment

management, said the average

number of times a college student

changes his or her major is 2.5, and

that is one of the reasons why Tech

is committed to offering a wide

variety of academic disciplines.

“Arkansas Tech has all of the

most popular majors that students

look for,” said Donnell. “The breadth

of what they can study here makes

a significant difference because as

those students change their major,

they know they can pursue other

interests without transferring to a

different institution.”
