INDUCTION

Tech High School, founded in 1917, is well known for its great athletic and activities tradition. In 1986, we decided it was time to begin to recognize the contributions and achievements of the individuals that have helped develop “Tiger Pride”! Through the formation of the Tech Hall of Fame, our community and school have been able to begin to accomplish this goal.

Recognizing outstanding alumni not only gives us the opportu-nity to pay tribute to those who helped establish our traditions, but also gives our current students a knowledge of our school’s outstanding history- and a challenge to continue our traditions.

Today, October 10, 2019, is our eighth induction to Tech’s Hall of Fame. On the following pages are the biographies of our 16 inductees along with their picture.

A special thanks to the Hall of Fame Selection Committee and all who contributed to today’s induction. Although it is impossible to recognize everyone who has contributed, we especially want to recognize the efforts of the following people: Shelly Fruth (Ac-tivities Assistant), Dennis Voigt (Media), the Tech Alumni Asso-ciation, the Tech Captains/Leaders group, Tech’s custodial staff, Mayor Dave Kleis, and those listed on the program schedule on the next page. We also want to thank our former inductees whose contributions have made this special day possible.

Shelly is a 1984 graduate of Tech High School. Shortly after graduation Shelly re-turned to Tech and served as Activities Assistant for 26 years - from January 1993 through August of 2019! During her years as activi-ties assistant, Shelly “trained in” 10 Activities Directors, counting those who returned as Activities Director after leaving the position. Besides doing a great job profession-ally, Shelly was noted for having a wonderful relation-ship with students, who of-ten spent time in the activi-ties office where they were warmly welcomed. Shelly says that what she misses most since leaving her posi-tion is the interaction with the kids. As she says, “That’s what it was all about”. Shelly and her husband Randy, who is also a Tech grad, have three sons; Colton (26), Ethyn (23) and Rhett (21). They live in the Luxemburg area.

Patti is a 1977 Tech grad who actually began working for Tech High School through the Co-op Program while she was still a student. She did such a good job that right after graduating from Tech Patti was hired to work in the office. She became the activi-ties assistant in July of 1979 and served for 12 years, until 1991. Patti worked un-der both George Potter and Jack Toftey while they were Tech’s AD’s. One of Patti’s memories is the effort and fun related to the beginning of girl’s high school athletics during the 1970’s. She said she found it rewarding to see kids involved in sports and to run into them years later and have them remember her. Patti left Tech in 1991 and spent 20 years as Adminis-trative Assistant at Kennedy community School, retiring in June of 2014. Patti and her husband Bob live in the Cold Spring area and still attend many athletic contests at the College of St. Ben’s/St. John’s.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

With this induction into Tech’s Athletic Hall of Fame, we begin a tradition of recognizing individuals who have contributed in significant ways to Tech athletic programs. While these individuals will not necessarily be Tech graduates, and will not have competed in the ath-letic program, they will all have had an influence on the quality of the opportunity provided to athletes at Tech.

ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT

Tom began working at the St. Cloud Times in the spring of 1982 and, except for a period from 1994-1997, has been covering area sports ever since. Tom is a South St. Paul and St. Cloud State graduate who recalls first running into Tech athletics in 1979-80 when the boys’ basketball team took second in the state tournament. He remem-bers the huge, enthusiastic following Tech had in the championship game against Minneapolis North. Tom has gotten to know many Tech coaches and athletes over the years and says he “en-joys the challenge of writing stories well enough so that people remember them.” Tom has been the author of many great articles about Tech athletes and contests! Tom Elliott has received many awards in recognition of his outstanding coverage of high school athletics including the MSHSL Distinguished Media Award in 2019. He is past president of the MN Associ-ated Press Sports Editors As-sociation and has won count-less writing awards at the state level as well a national Best of Gannett and Associ-ated Press awards. Tom has two sons, John (24) and Mi-chael (17).

MARK DINGMANN

1998

Mark Dingmann graduated from Tech in 1998. As a three-sport athlete - football, basketball, and baseball - he received Distinguished Academic Achievement Award his sophomore, junior, and senior years. In football, he was a three-year letter winner. He earned All-Con-ference Honorable Mention in 1997. That same year, his team won the conference cham-pionship. He was part of the state tournament team in 1997 which played against Blaine at Clark Field. Dingmann was a three-year letter winner in basketball as well. He finished his career as one of the top ten scorers in Tech history. He earned All-Conference Honorable Mention Awards two times and an All-Conference Award one year. He was awarded the NBA Sportsmanship Certificate his senior year. In baseball, he was a three-time letter winner and three-year starter at catcher. He finished his career near the top of Tech’s all-time home run and RBI leader list. He won All-Conference Awards two years and was the team captain his senior year. The team won the conference in 1997 and participated in the state tourna-ment. He was also part of the Legion Baseball State Tournament Team in 1997 and was part of the VFW Baseball State Tournament Team in 1996. After high school, Dingmann played one year of college basketball at Waldorf College in Iowa, two years of baseball at Waldorf College, and two years of college baseball at Saint Cloud State University. After high school, he was also a basketball referee for 10 years. He is currently coaching youth football, youth baseball, and youth basketball which he has been doing for 2-3 years. He serves as presi-dent of the Sartell Youth Baseball Association. He lives in Sartell with his wife Leslie and their children Easton (8) and Mason (6). He is the Vice-President and General Manager at McDowall Company in Waite Park, MN, where he has worked for the past 15 years.

SHAWN BRESNAHAN

1983

Shawn is a 1983 graduate of Tech and graduated #6 academically in his class. He was a captain and two-way starter on the 8-1, 1982 Tech football team his senior year. His team finished the season rated #10 in the final State Rankings. Shawn was a starter on the Tech basketball team that went to the State Tournament. In Tennis, Shawn was a member of the 2-time Tech Boys Tennis State Champion Teams. He was also a member of the State Individual Doubles Champion. Over-all, Shawn earned 7 letters in his athletic career: 4 in tennis, 2 in football and 1 in basketball. Shawn played one year of tennis at St. Cloud State and then trans-ferred to Arizona State University in Phoenix where he graduated with a degree in Finance. Following graduation, Shawn moved to San Diego, CA where he still resides. He has worked in corporate finance for large companies in the defense and Telecom industries as well as working with fledgling start-ups. He and his wife Tere have triplet boys - Nick, Ryan and Eric - who are currently 20 years old. All three are currently in college.

Daniel Frantti graduated from Tech in 1979. While at Tech, he lettered 2 times in football, 3 times in hockey, and three times in track. He was a 5-time All-Conference athlete once in football, once in hockey, and three times in track. He was also named to the All-Metro team in football and hockey. In track, he was a region champion in the 400 meters and the sprint medley. He placed in both of those events at the Minnesota state track and field championship. He also was the Tech record holder in the 400 m. dash. He was Tech’s hockey captain in 1978/79. He was named to WCCO Radio’s All-State Team for football in 1978. In 1978/79 he was named Male Honor Athlete and was a junior Rotarian in those same years. He continued in athletics at Saint Cloud State University where he was a four-year letter winner in track and field and was co-captain in 1983. While at SCSU, he set seven individual/relay school records. He earned the Dr. Brainerd Scholar Athlete Award. Since graduating from college, Frantti was the assistant track coach at Tech in 1984. He was the Buffalo High School assistant hockey coach from 1989-1991. He now lives in Cold Spring, MN, with his wife Debra and has two children, his son Trek, 25, and his daughter Palmer, 23.

DAN FRANTTI 1979

Megan Foley graduated from Tech in 2006 and continued her education at Saint Cloud State University from which she grad-uated in 2010. Foley was a three-sport athlete at Tech com-peting in basketball, softball, and volleyball. In volleyball, she was a three-year letter winner, Conference Honorable Mention one year, and was chosen captain her senior year. In softball, she was a four-year letter winner and was named to the All-Conference team. She was team captain and was chosen Team Defensive Player of the Year her senior year. In basketball, she was also a four-year letter winner. She was captain of the team for two years. She led her team to two section semi-finals and was a member of the conference champion team her senior year. In her sophomore year, she was named Defensive Player of the Year. In her senior year, she was chosen Offensive Player of the Year. She currently holds the rebound record at Tech. She was also a nominee for Minnesota Ms. Basketball. She showed her leadership skills in student council, jazz band, SADD, and KIWANIS. Her basketball career was memorable because they won the conference her senior year, and she had the opportu-nity to play basketball with her sister for two years. She coached basketball at Tech from 2010-2015 and softball at Tech in 2015. Foley is currently the assistant principal at Mississippi Heights in Sauk Rapids.

MEGAN FOLEY 2006

Steve Howe-Veenstra is a 1972 graduate of Tech High School and 1979 graduate of Saint Cloud State University. As an athlete at Tech, he lettered in baseball his junior year and in basketball his junior and senior years. He was named captain his senior year. He was also named to the St. Cloud Times All-Metro Team his senior year. He averaged 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game his senior year. He was the assistant sophomore basketball coach at Tech from 1975-77. He coached the boys’ freshman basketball team from 1978-87. In 1987-88, he was the assistant varsity basketball coach at Apollo High School. From 1990-95, he coached sophomore boys’ basket-ball at Tech. He was the boys’ varsity bas-ketball coach at Tech from 1996-2000. He is currently going into his 19th season as assistant basketball coach at the College of Saint Benedict. As a 9th grade coach, his team won 47 games straight. He was named Central Lakes Conference Coach of the Year in 1996-97. Howe-Veenstra was a special education teacher for District 742 for 35 years (12 at Tech High School) and was a presenter numerous times at state and national level regarding special educa-tion. In his years at Tech, he developed the “Full Inclusion Program” for students with disabilities which got those students in-volved in classes, clubs, and activities with mainstream students. He resides in Saint Cloud with his wife Carol. They have one child named Ryan (32).

STEVE HOWE-VEENSTRA

1972 COACH

Ron Kaczor graduated from Bigfork High School in Bigfork, MN, in 1976 and con-tinued his education at Saint Cloud State University where he received his degree in education. Ron was an assistant Tech foot-ball coach from 1984 until 1996, when he became the head football coach. Ron was the head football coach at Tech from 1996 until 2005. Ron served in several other coaching positions in District 742 includ-ing as an assistant football coach at Apollo High School before moving over to Tech. He was Tech’s throwing coach for the track and field team. He also was an assistant basketball coach for Tech. As Tech’s head football coach, Ron had a lifetime record of 58 wins and 41 losses. He was named the Central Lakes Conference Football Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000. He was also the Section Coach of the Year in 1998. In 2001, Ron was named an Outstate All Star Team Coach. Ron Kaczor experienced much success at Tech High School. He was able to coach many of his sons and coached several athletes who made it to the State All-Star game. Many of his athletes made it to the state track and field championship under his coaching. Most importantly, he was a great leader and mentor not only for his own children but countless other young men and women. He believed in creating championship people even more than sim-ply championship athletes. He is survived by his wife Ruth, and his ten children: An-drew (38), Daniel (36), David (33), Meredith (30), Mark (28), Paul (26), Thomas (22), James (20), Rachael (18), and John (16).

LYDIA KABAKA

1990

Lydia Kabaka is a 1990 graduate of Tech High School and a 1994 graduate of Con-cordia College. She was a letter winner in soccer from 1985-1989 and was captain in 1989. She was the leading scorer from 1987-1989 and was named most valu-able player in 1989. In basketball, she was a letter winner from 1989-1990 and was voted most athletic in 1990. She earned Central Lakes All Conference honors in 1988-1990. During her sophomore year, she had the best individual free throw percentage, highest total season points, highest number of rebounds, and greatest number of free throws. Kabaka also excelled in track and field earning varsity letters from 1986-1990. She was captain of the 1990 team. She broke the school record in the 300-meter hurdles in 1989. In 1990, she was named All state in the 100-meter hurdles. In regions and sub regions, Kabaka placed in the top 5 in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and long jump every year she competed starting when she was moved to varsity as an 8th grader. At Tech, she was also in student council and orchestra. At the collegiate level, she also competed in soccer and track. In 1994, she was named NCAA All American in track. From 1990-1994, she was an NCAA National Qualifier in track. In 1994, she was named to the All West Team in soccer, and she was a member of the MIAC All Conference team from 1990-1994 in both soccer and track. Kabaka now lives in Maple Grove, MN and two children, Avery (12) and Alana (16).

CAROL (LIBBESMEIER)

LANGERUD

1981

Carol Langerud graduated from Tech High School in 1981. While at Tech, she competed in swimming and diving and in gymnastics. She lettered all four years in diving and was a state meet participant all four years as well. She was cap-tain of the team her junior year and was named to the All-Conference team and All-State Teams. She finished 5th in the state in 1989 and 2nd in 1980. Langerud lettered in gymnastics four times and participated in the state meet her junior and senior years. She was captain her senior year and named to the All-Conference team all four years she competed for Tech. She is also a Tech gymnastics Hall of Fame Member. She continued her diving career for the next four years at the University of Minnesota where she was a four-year letter winner. She competed in the AIAW nationals her freshman year and was captain her junior and senior years. She competed in Big Ten Diving Meets and won the ACIA award her junior and senior years. Langerud graduated from the U of M in 1985. She presently works at the Tony Langerud State Farm Insurance Agency, Inc., with her husband Tony. They have a daughter named Lauren (26) and a son named Blake (24).

ALISE (POST) WILLOUGHBY

2009

Alise Willoughby is a 2009 graduate at Tech High School. Willoughby took part in gymnastics and track and field at Tech. In track and field, she competed in the state meet all five years she competed. During that time, she held school records in the 4x100, 4x400, 200 m. dash, triple jump (both indoor and outdoor), and pole vault. She was also all-conference every year she competed from 8th grade-12th grade. She also excelled in gymnastics. She competed both as an indi-vidual and on the Tech team. Her team was the runner-up at the state meet four times. She was the individual vault champion at state three times. Her team was also CLC champions four times. She was the individual CLC champion 12 times across all events. She held CLC All-Conference honors 12 times. School records for Willoughby in gymnastics include all around team high score and five individual event records in the uneven bars, beam, vault, floor, and all-around. During her high school years, Willoughby became a professional BMX racer. Following graduation, Willoughby attended the University of San Diego and became a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Califor-nia. She left after one year to pursue her BMX dream. She competed in BMX in the 2012 London Olympics and in the 2016 Rio Olympics in which she earned a silver medal. She is now training for her third Olympic berth in the 2020 Olympics with her husband Sam, the 2012 silver medalist competing for Australia, as her coach. She is now the winningest pro in USA BMX history with seven #1 professional titles, four over-all amateur titles, nine consecutive USA Cycling Elite Women National Championship wins, six Elite World Championship podium placings. She is the first woman in history to be awarded 3 USA BMX Golden Crank Awards for Rookie and Pro of the Year, a NORA CUP nomination, an ESPN Top Ten Play honor, and two St. Cloud Mayor High Five Awards. There is also an of-ficial “Alise Post Day” in St. Cloud in September. She currently lives in Chula Vista, CA, with her husband/coach Sam.

1991

KATRINA STEFFES

Trina Steffes graduated from Tech High School in 1991 where she participated in cross country, basketball, and track & field. She was a five-year letter winner in cross country, two year letter winner in basketball, and four year letter winner in track and field. She was captain in all three sports. In basketball, she was voted Ms. Hustle and MVP by teammates multiple years. She was an All-Conference Selection player her senior year. In track and field, she was an All-Conference athlete all four of her high school years. She was voted MVP by her team every year as well. She was on the St. Cloud Times Track Honor Roll from 1987-1991. In 1988-89, she ran on the Tech team which took 4th at the State True Team Track and Field Championships. She set the school records in the 1600 m., 800 m., and the 4x400 relay. She was the state individual champion in the 1600 m. run and placed second in the 800 m. run. She went on to run cross country and track at North Dakota State University from 1991-96. In track, she was named All-American in the 1500 m. and 4x400 relay. She placed 2nd in the Indoor National Championship in the 1500 m. run. She was a Dean’s List Academic Performer. Steffes ran in the National Championships for cross country. Her track team was named Team Conference Champion Indoor and Outdoor for 5 consecutive years. Since college, she has played for multiple Women’s tackle football teams from 2002-present. She is currently playing for the Wisconsin Dragons where she is an All-Pro performer and is Co-Own-er of the team. She has been voted MVP every year she has played. She has earned a Master’s Degree in Orien-tal Medicine in Acupuncture and Herbs and works has an acupuncturist in New Berlin, Wi, where she lives with her wife Nancy Biker, and two children, Alex (31) and Sam (22).

Dave Stearns graduated from Tech in 1967 and was a 1971 graduate of the University of Minnesota. At Tech, he earned 10 letters: three in football, three in basket-ball, and four in tennis. He also earned multiple state quarterback and athlete of the week awards through-out his high school years. He had multiple district and regional awards in basketball and tennis. He was the captain of the basketball team and played #1 on the tennis team for four years and was also team captain. Stearns continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he was a four-year letter winner in tennis. He earned a full athletic scholarship for tennis from the U of M. He was captain of the U tennis team in 1970-71 and earned the Williams Academic Schol-arship all four years. Following graduation, Stearns has been the head boys’ tennis coach for 32 years at Min-netonka and for 26 years the head girls’ tennis coach

DAVE STEARNS

1967

Collin Stinogel is a 2008 Tech graduate. He participated in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, he was an athlete on the Section 8AAAAA Champion-ship team and State AAAAA Semi-Finalist team in 2006. He was on the 2005 and 2007 CLC Championship teams and was named all-conference in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, He was all-section, all-area, and all-state honorable men-tion, as well as Central Lake Conference Offensive player of the year, team cap-tain, and a Mr. Football Minnesota nominee. In 2008, he was selected to play in the Minnesota All-State Game. In basketball, Stinogel played on the 2008 State tournament team which earned a 3rd place finish. He was also all con-ference and his team won the CLC championship. In baseball, he was team captain and was named to the all-conference team twice. He also was named all area his senior year. He went on to play both football and baseball at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he was a National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society Inductee in 2013. In baseball he was team captain, All-Central Region Honorable Mention in 2012, All-Conference in 2012, All-Conference Tournament First Team in 2011, and Academic All-Conference from 2008-2012. In football, He was named to the UMD Academic All-Conference team 2008-2012. He played on the NCAA Division II Football Champion-ship teams in 2008 and 2010. Stinogel earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UMD in 2012, Master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in 2015, and graduated from medical school at Liberty University in May 2019. He cur-rently resides in Pittsburgh, PA, completing his residency in emergency medicine.

for the same school. He was also the sophomore boys’ basketball coach and varsity assistant coach for Min-netonka for eight years. He has had 800 team wins as head coach of the Minnetonka tennis teams. He was the assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach on two state championship teams. In AA tennis, he has earned State Tennis Coach of the Year five times. He has also had multiple section AA Coach of the Year honors at Minnetonka. He was named High School Coach of the Year in 2013-14. He is a Master Tennis Professional for the United States Professional Tennis Association and is a three time USPTA/NWPTA Singles and Doubles Champion. He was also the head tennis professional at the Layfayette Club for five years and was the manag-ing partner of the Tonka Raquet and Swim Club from 1978-89. He now lives in Carver, MN, and has two children: Kerli Lynn (46) and Brent (42).

Nick Thielman graduated from Tech in 2000. He competed in football and basketball while at Tech. In basketball, he was a two-time letter winner and won the Mr. Hustle award. In football, he played multiple positions ranging from linebacker to wide receiver to kicker. He was a three time letter winner and was named to the all-conference, all section, all area, and academic all-state teams. He went on to St. John’s University where he played cornerback, wide receiver, and kicker for the football team. In 2003, he com-peted on the St. John’s football team which won the Division III Football National Championship. In his four-year career with St. John’s, he helped his team to 50 wins. Thielman graduated from St. John’s in 2004 and is presently the National Vice President of Sales for Rally Health. He is a strong supporter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Olympics, and New Generations in Cambo-dia. He continues to serve as an International Career Consultant for St. John’s University, building on his own experience of living abroad and conducting business in more than a dozen countries. He now lives in Edina, MN, with his wife Julie, daughter Olivia (8), and son Max (5).

NICK THIELMAN2000

Duane Thompson is a 1974 graduate of Tech High School. He lettered three times in football and basketball, and two times in track. He served as team captain of the basketball team both his senior and junior years. Thompson continued his education at Gustavus Adolphus College where he played basketball all four years, was captain his senior year, and was named to the All-Conference MIAC team his senior year. He attended graduate school at St. Mary’s College where he received his Masters of Arts in 1985 and became a licensed psychologist for the state of Minnesota in 1988. He is currently a psychologist at Mental Health Associates, P.A. and is a private practitioner and owner of that practice. He also works for David Hoy & Associates where he started in 2018. He provides mental health services for adults, families, and adolescents. Thompson lives in Waconia, MN, with his wife Martha.

DUANE THOMPSON1974

Nancy Goldmeier was a multi-sport athlete at Tech High School and graduate in 1986. She was a three-year let-ter winner in both soccer and basketball. In basketball, she was named to the all-conference team and was an honorable mention for the all-state team. She also let-tered four times in softball and was named all-confer-ence in that sport. During her high school career, she participated in the state softball tournament in 1983 and was an integral member of the 1986 girls’ basket-ball team which finished the regular season undefeated. Nancy continued her sports career at Moorhead State University, playing both basketball and softball. To date, she holds the record for career steals (193) for women’s basketball at Moorhead State. She now resides in Rock-ville, Maryland which her husband Barry where she is self-employed and continues to play competitive wom-en’s soccer.

DONNAWALTERS

COACH

Donna Walters is a 1967 graduate of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School in Aurora, MN. She attended Bemidji State College and graduated in 1971. In 1963, she competed in the women’s Softball championship for the Town of Hoyt Lakes. She eventually went on to swim for Bemidji State where she helped her team to win the State College Women Swimming Championships in 1970. Then, she coached Tech gymnastics from 1971-74 and was the first girls’ interscholastic gymnastics coach from 1974-80. She was the girls’ swimming coach from 1971-74 at South Junior High. She was the first girls’ interscholastic swim coach in 1974. She coached syn-chronized swimming from 1971-75. In 1974, she coached the Tech swim team to win the district 19 championship. In that same year, she coached the gymnastics team to a district 19 championship. In 1977, she sent the first Tech gymnast, Lisa Hohman, to the state meet. In 1978, she qualified seven Tech gymnasts for the section meet. In 1979, the Tech gymnastic team won the Central Lakes Confer-ence Championship. She advanced two athletes to the state gymnastics meet in 1979-80. She was a student physical education instructor in 1966-67. In 1998, she won an award from the local American Heart Association for excellence in raising money for Jump Rope for Heart. She also won a tristate Darrel Hannamen Award for Jump Rope for Heart. She hosted a Physical Education Workshop from 1992-2001. She was also a Boy Scout Committee Chairperson for seven years in Sauk Rapids Troop 9. She currently lives in Sauk Rapids with her husband Ronald. They have two children: Joe (36) and Charlie (39).
