Over the years, you may havenoticed that TechShop followsa theme of fives. We bring

you technicians’ Top 5 Tools everyissue and the top five things to lookfor when buying a certain tool orpiece of equipment. I’m not surewhy we picked that number manyyears ago … maybe it’s a favoritenumber for me (my birthday fallson the fifth, I loved the Jackson5…) or maybe it’s because readersare busy and they want things faster— “just give me the highlights.” Each issue of TechShop, the previously mentioned

Top 5 Tools section features submissions from techni-cians who share what five tools help them most inthe shop. In our December issues, we tally the votesand showcase the top-named companies. Perennial favorites are Mac Tools, Snap-on and Matco Tools, aswell as GearWrench and Ingersoll Rand. See page 23for this year’s winning companies. We will presenteach of them with a unique Top 5 Tool award. And to build on this theme, this year we’re high-

lighting the top five tools and equipment that werenamed. See pages 14-16. For this issue we’re taking the “five” theme even

further. The TechShop team was recently in Las Vegasfor the AAPEX and SEMA shows, so we thoughtwe’d bring you what we thought were five of themost interesting items we saw at the shows. • SP Air’s pneumatic beveling machine (see page

30) has a three-blade cutting head that can cutstraight and radius chamfers. • Chicago Pneumatic’s new line of cordless tools

(see page 29) feature a high-performance batterywith a runtime that’s two times higher than that of astandard lithium battery. • GearWrench spotlighted its new snap ring

pliers (see page 16), dead blow hammers and anew and improved socket set.• Campbell Hausfeld highlighted its CH

Commercial Air Tools (see page 35) aswell as the new FTC-60 impact wrench. • MAHLE Service Solutions announced

its new TechPRO scan tool (see page 11),which includes J-2534 pass-thru capabil-

ity. And a bonus one (since it won’t be

available until early 2015, but is defi-nitely worth mentioning): SK HandTool debuted its X-Frame ratchetingwrench (see page 30), with a complete-

ly reinvented ratcheting mechanism.

Second Annual Redline Rock Star Performance Award Also of awards note, at AAPEX, Redline Detectionheld a press conference announcing a call for nomi-nations for the second Redline Rock Star Perform-ance Award, which will recognize a rising technicianfor his (or her) commitment to his family, communityand the industry. The winning technician will receive cash and prizes

valued at $2,500. Additionally, the nominating indi-vidual will receive a prize valued at $250. Nominations are being accepted through Dec. 31

and can be submitted at http://redlinetechacademy.com/nominate. The winner will be announced in January.Last year’s winner, Christian Opfer of SK Motor-

sport in Bellingham, WA, an ASE Certified MasterTechnician, was recognized for his extraordinarycommitment to technical excellence and continuededucation in the field, aswel l as h is community i n v o l v e m e n t . This article will document Diagnostic TroubleCode P0420 — Catalyst Efficiency BelowThreshold. This code involves the integrity ofthe catalytic converter. This is a code that manyhave encountered, but once in a while you runacross one that requires mention.

This story begins based on a simple concept, thevehicle being tested is in an emissions state that requires all monitors on the vehicle to run and pass. Our subject vehicle is a 1998 Cadillac Eldorado. Allmonitors on the vehicle have run and passed exceptthe catalyst monitor. The repair facilities in the areahave advised the customer to keep driving the vehi-cle so that the enable criteria can be met and themonitor run. Once the criteria are met, the monitorcan then run and hopefully pass. Figures 1 and 2 denote what was witnessed when

the vehicle was scanned with a generic scan tool. The pictorials show that the MIL is not commandedon; all monitors have run except for the catalystmonitor. By this time, the Eldorado has been drivenfor well over a month.

A review of mode 6 data per our scan tool shows aconcern toward the catalyst monitor. It appears it isrun at idle on this vehicle. Figure 3 on page 8 showsthe mode 6 data in reference to this vehicle.I decided to use one of the features of this scan tool

— it has an option available to run a catalyst effi-ciency test at idle, but will not set a flag for the cata-lyst monitor. Our goal at this point is to get an opin-ion as to whether the catalytic converter is efficientor not. The catalyst test is run and it shows an effi-ciency rating of 39%; this is no doubt a failure sta-tus. Figure 4 shows the test results. It is interesting again to note that the catalyst moni-

tor did not run on this vehicle, the question is “whynot?” If a catalyst has degraded to the point where itno longer meets the compliance of OBD II stan-dards, why did the monitor not run and fail thiscomponent? A little research is needed to answer this question. I

begin by going to aGeneral Motorswebsite that allowsme to review limitsfor mode 6 data aswell as failure crite-ria for this monitorbased on year, make, model andengine family. Thedata shows a mode6 range of -32.768to +32.767 seconds. Our actual mode 6data showed avalue of +32.727seconds. This wasthe reason for thered flag noted perthe actual mode 6data we reviewedfor this vehicle.

I then proceeded to review failure criteria as well astime and frequency of this test. My review of failurecriteria indicates that the system looks at “oxygen stor-age capacity” (OSC) to verify if the catalyst meetscompliance, the table below denotes the data obtained. It is interesting to note that up to six tests per trip(EWMA) can be run in order to set the catalyst flag.

I then decided to review scan data from a Tech 2 tosee if it offered additional information in getting some

questions answered.Figure 5 shows thecatalyst data forthis vehicle.A review of the

catalyst data listshows one samplefor EWMA. The testvalue needs to begreater than orequal to 0.12 sec-onds, but the actualtest result was -0.03 seconds (fail-ure). If the data wassomewhat consis-tent in reference tothese values, thecatalyst monitorflag should at somepoint set and fail

the monitor. A review of the emission test results two years prior

shows that the catalyst monitor did not run at thattime as well. It is the opinion of this observer that weshould now check to see if any software updates mayexist for this vehicle. A review of software calibrations shows that there is

a reflash for catalyst response for our vehicle. The vehicle received a reflash and our goal was to allowthe OBD II system to do its job, the monitor did runand fail. A code P0420 was stored in the controller’smemory. The catalytic converter was replaced with anOBD II-compliant converter and the monitor wasrerun. The monitor then ran and passed. This Pulling Codes case is now solved. TS
