Maintaining the Power Grid in Canada Now and in the Future
Presented by TJH2b Analytical Services
This year's TechCon® Canada 2013 was a two-day conference and
Expo held at The Westin Calgary Hotel in Calgary, Canada. Calgary is home to many major utilities and transmission companies such as Enmax, AltaLink, and Saskatoon Light & Power. We were excited and honored to have these companies attend our conference this year. Calgary is a city of one million people and makes an “art form” out of eclectic serenity. Here prairie collides with mountains, cowboy charm meets urban sprawl, and the world comes to be swept off its feet by the sheer majesty of the Canadian Rockies. Calgary is also the fastest growing city in North America, a leader in energy production as well as technological advancement and the underlining reasons this wonderful city was selected for our conference.

several local history books, appeared on CBC radio as "Harry the Historian," and served as the Calgary Heritage Authority 2012 Historian Laureate. He is a past president of the Historical Society of Alberta's local chapter and a past co-chair of the annual Historic Calgary Week festival.
This year’s TechCon Canada 2013 Conference and Expo drew attendees from Alberta, Ontario, British Columbia and Saskatoon provinces. We even had delegates from the United Sates as far as New Jersey joining us! With twelve extremely informative general conference sessions hosted by our long time Chairman Professor Dennis Allan, TechCon Canada 2013 provided a wide-ranging program for all. It’s hard to say which presentation was the “Best of Show” during the conference as all paper submissions were so highly rated by the members of the International Papers Committee.
The general sessions had excellent attendance and we were pleased to
note the very positive reactions of those attending Brett Sargent’s
presentation on the “Big Data for Big Power: How smart is the Grid if the
Infrastructure is Stupid” as well as the quality presentation by Mark
Tostrud on "GIC/SMD – The Monitoring Perspective." Great job guys!

Kerry Heid President of Magna Electric Corporation and also past President of NETA gave a presentation on "Best Practices in Electrical Power Testing Specifications and Field Testing."
This was NETA’s first time exhibiting at a TechCon conference.
Lunch was served in the exhibit hall to give exhibitors face time with delegates in a relaxed environment. Delegates were also given an opportunity to meet and get further in-depth information from presenters and exhibitors. We had two new exhibitors to TechCon® this year, NETA and BPL Global. Both are a nice new addition to our TechCon conferences.
More fun was had at the Thursday night dinner when the outrageous improvisational team entertained the crowd and gained great audience participation. Laughs, food and great service filled the night. High marks for food on every level. Healthy options and chef creations delighted everyone throughout the conference. Bison was served along

with a variety of substitutions for everyone’s dining pleasure. The wine selection was excellent and open bar was available during the evening.
Daniela Petrucci, Technical and Sale Representative from Zensol at the Welcome Reception.
The MacPhail School of Energy was pleased to offer an awesome tour of the brand-new SAIT Polytechnic Trades and Technology Complex. Tour participants viewed many state of the art laboratories currently used by the Electrical Engineering Technology and Instrumentation Engineering Technology students. With many labs being designed in partnership with industry partners, the students are able to gain hands-on experience in a safe and controlled environment that mimics the real world workplace.
