ABSTRACT
The campus placement here at Delhi Technological University has always
been the most talked about affair and eagerly awaited among the final year
students. Rightly so, as reputation of a college is determined these days by
the placement offers. Even before getting admission in the college, students,
especially their parents are determined in finding the salaries they hope to
get after 4 years from then by getting placed in the company of their dreams.
Owing to its reputation, our college sees a plethora of companies lining up to
recruit some of the best minds this country has to offer.
The report deals with various aspects of placements at DTU as well my
personal experience with the placement session.

INTRODUCTION
The entire placement session is managed by the placement coordinators;
students elected by the respective branches; in our college. They have the
responsibility of managing the entire placement session in a lucid manner
which involves not only calling the companies but also making
arrangements for them on the day of arrival. This responsibility is the single
most important thing that can be entrusted to a student by his classmates as
in time to come he alone will be responsible for getting all his classmates
placed in reputed companies.
COMPANIES
The college lists the companies that would be visiting the campus in various
categories, single important being the salary being offered as well the
reputation the company has. The various categories are
1. SUPER
This category is given to the companies either offering salary greater than
seven lakhs per annum or if the reputation of the company is such that salary
being offered, even if lesser, is of no object for students. This list includes
some of the heavy weights of the industry not only in India but even abroad.
It will be safe to assume that this tag is given to the best of the companies
the industry has to offer. Some of the companies included are Facebook,
Google, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Indus Insights, ZS associates
etc. Now each branch has its set of super companies, for example civil has
its set of super companies like Bechtel, Fluor Daniel. Now the salary being
offered by them is comparatively lesser than their counterparts in computer
engineering, software and electronic branches .Its because of these
companies the average package of the students of our college barely
crosses 5 lacs. Unfortunately for civil not many super companies came tovisit our campus owing to the callous attitude been adopted by our
placement coordinator.
2.A+

This category is given to companies offering greater than 5 lacs per annum
to the students. Now this list although contain the lesser heavy weights but
in no means lesser in reputation than their predecessors. Getting placed in
these companies is by no means a tad bit easier than the previous ones. On
the contrary this category attracts most applications from the students as the
cutoffs for preliminary selection is lesser than the super companies .Some of
the companies included in this list are Maruti Suzuki, Yamaha, Michelin etc.
3.A
This category includes companies giving salaries in the range of 3 lacs to 5
lacs. Owing to this fact, this list also contains the largest number of
companies. For civil a majority of companies belonged to this category, the
primary reason being that list of companies called in the first place was
already meager. So to prevent double placements this step had to be taken bythe placement department, thus depriving civil students off the respect a
person commands on getting multiple offers. Some of the companies in this
category are L&T, SMEC, GS construction, Triune energy, WSP group etc
4.B
This category includes companies which offer salaries lesser than 3.5 lacs.
These companies are supposed to be the last resort or the first step for
the students owing to different scenarios depending upon whether it is the
end of beginning of the placement session respectively. Getting placed in
these companies is a cakewalk for the intelligent ones, a fact well frowned
upon by the by their counterparts as these companies are targeted for
average students who consider not having a shot at A+ and Super companies
PLACEMENT POLICY
1. Students should be dressed in proper formal attire during the placementprocedure.
2. Students should report for all the rounds on time. Latecomers will not be
entertained. And, make sure you do attend the PPT of the company you are
applying for.

3. Public posting of the placement schedule of DTU on the internet is strictly
prohibited.
4. If a student has applied for a Recruiter he/she has to come for the
recruitment process.
If the student fails to turn up for the whole process, the student will be
debarred for the complete placement session of 2012-2013.
5. If the student gets placed in a company before the recruitment process of
any other company in the same category is completed the student has no
option to reject his previous offer or to wait till the procedure for the latter
company is completed.
For instance there are two companies A and B, and A has declared its result
while B is yet to declare the final results. The student who has been shortlisted in both has no option to reject the offer
made to him by Company A.
The selected student will be replaced by the first student in the waiting list of
the Recruiter.
If any of the above is not strictly followed by any student, the student can
be debarred permanently for the placement session.

MY TYRST WITH PLACEMENT SESSION
The list of companies I sat for is quite big giving me plenty of experience and
things to learn and improve upon. I sat for nearly 25 companies, a daring feat, leading to a considerably long session for me. In the coming parts, I will discuss
not only the companies I sat for in chronological order but also the reasons I
perceived for rejection and the lessons learnt.
Here is the list of some of the companies I sat for in chronological order.
1.THE SMART CUBE (TSC)This was the first company I sat for. I was really excited and looking forward to
my first ever interview . The company was given the category of A+. It was just
the beginning of August and the placement session had just started. The first week
of August saw a barrage of Super companies lining up to recruit students right atthe beginning of the placement season and rightly so, as coming early ensured that
the best and the brightest came to them. The recruitment procedure consisted of 2
stages of written exams, the first being quantitative and the next , verbal. Both the
stages were eliminating and separate shortlists were created after each stage.
Competition for this company was fierce and why wont it be, who doesnt want
to get placed in the first week itself.
Though I didnt get placed in it served as a great experience for my long journey
thereafter. I got to know first hand what type of questions the aptitude and verbal
written exams have and how to fair better in them than the others.
2. MARUTI SUZUKI
The company conducted written test at the campus which comprised of technical
questions pertaining to the field of civil. It was subsequently followed by a
psychometric test previously unheard of by many of my classmates. Vague as they
may sound to any amateur those questions are a tough nut to crack. One easily
looses the track of questions being asked to judge ones personality and pertaining
to anywhere from general behavior and qualities. Only two students were
shortlisted for the final interview. To all our surprise Maruti recruited a record
number of students both from mechanical as well as electrical totaling to number
of 35. This jumpstarted the entire placement session and upped the hopes ofeveryone at the campus.
3. Z.S.ASSOCIATES
The company was of super category and was offering the profile of business
technical associate and business operations associate. Owing to its popularity a lot

of good quality students applied for this company. Written test consisted of
general aptitude test which tested the basic aptitude of students.
4. BECHTEL
Everyone was eagerly waiting for this company in our class as the company hadstellar reputation not only in India but also throughout the world. It is the largest
contractor in United States of American and only second in the world. I listened to
the pre placement talk which much attention hoping not to miss any significant
detail in it. The written test was conducted first which comprised of both technical
and general verbal questions. To our surprise, some of the best students in our
class were not able to clear the written test. I couldnt clear the Group discussion
round sadly and this was my first ever group discussion
5. JINDAL GROUP
Jindal group came to college to recruit from multiple branches and were offering agood salary. The major drawback of joining the company was that their industry
were based in rural areas of Chattisgarh. But that didnt seem to dampen the spirits
of the students who were determined to join the largest steel maker of India. Itopped the written test. The process later consisted of interview session held at
their office in Gurgaon. The fear of joining the company and going to Chattisgarh
made a lot of selected students having a cold feet leading them to screw their
interviews. Later on we got to hear the comical answers students gave leading the
recruiters not to select any student having a GPA of more than 7.5 so this was
really unfortunate and dis heartening for me. But I didnt loose hope and tried my
level best for rest of the companies.
6. TECHNIP
It is a major player in the design aspect of civil engineering projects in the oil
sector. After attending the pre placement talks I was really looking forward to ace
the written technical test and I did clear the written test but failed in the interviewsadly. Written paper was different for all the branches which reduced the
competition. The selection result brought much cheer to students of our class as 4
of them got selected which they were not expecting at all. Two of my friends got
selected in this company which brought a very good news for my group of friends.
7. L&T CONSTRUCTIONFinally, it was my day the and got placed in it. After waiting endlessly for the day
when I too get the pleasure of finally getting a job, it finally came. The process
comprising written test followed by personal interviews. Written test was
conducted in our college but the interviews were held in Galgotia group of
institutions, Noida. Again, I topped the written test and this time I succeeded in the
interview process as well. Results of Personal interviews were announced after 2

months. This company really tested my degree of patience and finally on 8 th
march, results were announced . It was an indeed the happiest day of my life.
CONCLUSIONS
The placement session 2012-13 has been the happiest time of my life so far.
I was really looking forward to it right from my last exam of 6 th semester
ended and finally, it was the month of august and the placement session
began on a good note with so many companies coming right from the day
one. I did have to wait for so long to get my first job offer ever but it was
really a good experience for me and a good platform to learn. Hopefully, all
my fellow students would get placed soon and we will have 100% placement
record for yet another year.
