PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Fellow Toastmasters,

Tech Mahindra Toastmasters club always has been a welcomingclub that encourages and celebrates each person’s accomplishments and has fostered anenvironment that inspired all of us to lead ourselves and others in our daily lives. It isalso a club that has an incredible record with accolades up and down its walls. OurImmediate Past President, TM Bindu Balegar stepped down after striving hard andbringing the glory of golden gavel to our club. It has been close to three months since thisnew term has begun. This term has bought to all of us great excitements, newexperiences, new lessons, new friendships, new opportunities, new goals, renewedcommitment, new challenges and last but not least a (new) quarterly newsletter.

Now almost midway through this term ,we have learned a lot fromwhat goes right to what goes wrong. The beautiful thing about learning is that nobodycan take it away from you. A Chinese proverb says “Learning is a treasure that willfollow its owner everywhere”. That is why we’ll approach both this TM term, as well asour personal TM speaking and leadership goals with the attitude of a student.

We all have our own reasons and goals to join Toastmasters; forsome it is to become better communicators, for others it is to take up leadership roles, forsome it is to network and make friends and for others it is to achieve their awards. But themost important thing is to remember to have fun because enjoying the Toastmasters journeyis more important than reaching that destination. I believe, what should make us proud arenot the actual Goals we attain, but rather the process that we go through in order to attainthem.

We will strive for our Club, the Tech Mahindra BangaloreToastmasters Club to achieve the President Distinguished Club and Golden gavel Awardthis year too. Remember the more we put in, the greater our returns will be.

I wish our members all success in achieving greatness together.

Regards,Athul Prathap

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Dear Toastmasters,This issue of Vuvuzela is about “CELEBRATION”! Why not? I

feel like each of the Toastmasters meeting is a celebration. For any celebratory event, alot of preparation and planning is required. It is the time when family and friends cometogether to meet, greet and spend a joyous time together. Every time I recall mychildhood, I am reminded of the Onam Celebration. The preparations for which begandays before the actual festival. The elders in the house will be planning how thecelebrations should go on, how many people will be joining, from where are the newdresses to be bought, what all to make for the “sadya” - big meal on the plantain leaf etc.Kids of the household will be planning from where to collect flowers and the designs inwhich “pookalam’ – floral rangolis are to be made. It takes a lot of teamwork anddedication each and every time. In the process, we learn and also have so much fun. Asthe festival ends, there is a big sigh of satisfaction. We all leave with bundles of happymemories, eagerly looking forward to the next time when we all will gather again to havea splendid time.

In Toastmasters also, we find the same scenarios. Before themeeting, there are some people who run around to get things done. There is always chaos

in the beginning; but as soon as the meeting starts, everything falls into

place. People from various distinctions come together as one, just like in any celebration;live, laugh and learn. And as we depart, the faces we meet sometimes become friends forlife. Toastmasters is an international organization which promotes public speaking andleadership skills. For me, toastmasters is about friends and fun. But it doesn’t stop there. Each speech I delivered and repeated, each role I owned and accomplished has transformedme from a person who didn’t have the courage to smile at strangers to a person who walkedinto an auditorium full of strangers and performed imrpov comedy and won it!

We celebrate Festivals, Milestone, and Victories. However, life is notall about happiness. How I wish “Hakuna Matata” come true for all of us! Life is not meantto be easy; it is not meant to be perfect. But most of all, life, is not meant to be constant. Weare the storms we face, the trials and tribulations, the wins and the wisdom. We have toproudly own them, just like we proudly wear the feathers of victories in our cap. That’s whyto me, life is about celebration; celebrating the life in every breath. Because each of you, with your wounds and scars are to be celebrated.

Regards,Heera

NOTE FROM THE DIVISION DIRECTOR

TM Arun Ramarathnam, Director - Division I

6Tech Mahindra Bangalore Toastmasters Club

Dear fellow Toastmasters,I thank you for inviting me to write for your club’s newsletter

again. It is a always a pleasure for me to write to my host club and also the “Hatkeclub”!

First of all I would like to congratulate President AthulPrathap and his team of office bearers for creating an exciting and vibrantenvironment in the club for your members and guests. Kudos to them for all theirefforts and hard work! As Division Director it is very heartening to note thenumerous new initiatives the club have been driving true to its “Hatke” spirit andDNA.

The most laudable of them all is the “Help Kerala” initiativeled by President Athul Prathap and other toastmasters and his network of friends. Many members from the club and division rose to the occasion and responded to thegrave flood situation and contributed funds. It was indeed a laudable effort to godown to one of the tribal villages, understand their needs and subsequently distributewelfare and relief supplies to the tribal people. Hats off to Athul and volunteers whospent time at the affected village and also to all the toastmasters for their generouscontributions to provide

relief. You all did Toastmasters and Division-I truly proud. The Give back CSR activities of the club at Raza school is heart

warming. It is great to see members spend 3 half days of your weekend time to support the needsof very unprivileged students. You efforts to help them become more confident and betterprepared citizens by getting them to open up and dream big and communicate is commendable.Your initiative gives them hope for a better quality of life. Initiatives like these truly raise theprofile of Toastmasters in the general public and the communities we serve.

The weekly Monday lunchtime initiative Vartha Labs is a truly uniqueinitiative of the club. The initiative designed to get guests and employees engaged and interestedin Toastmasters has been very refreshing. This is a truly unique initiative across the divisionperhaps the district too.

Namma Berugalu the initiative taken to promote public speaking inKannada is another gem. The regular fortnightly meeting has consistently received over 12participants and guests. It would be very interesting to see how this initiative shapes up furtheras it matures.

1. How can we create visible and positive impact in your organization with the public speakingexpertise of the members?

2. How can we deliver greater and personalized transformation and value for each and everymember?

3. How can we create powerful speakers that can compete at the District level?

Come let’s dream big together and also make those dreams a reality!I leave the following thoughts with you…

AREA DIRECTOR’S NOTE – THE LION’S TRAINER

Close your eyes and imagine a jungle somewhere in theMasai Mara. Do you see that pride of lions resting in the afternoon sun? Can you seethat little lion cub frolicking in the middle of the pride? She tries to pester her fatherwho gently nudges her away but her mother lets her go all over her.

Now fast-forward the scene to a couple of years into thefuture. The young cub is now a teenager and is itching to try out her hunter’sinstinct. She thinks she can take on the big bison single handedly but the eldersdissuade her. Then her father steps in, take charge, and leads her into the art ofhunting by singling out the weakest of the bison and killing it. The young lionesslearns and trains. Her mother teaches her the art of the chase; her father teaches herhow to use her great strength. They know that in time she will make a great prideleader.

Sounds a bit like Lion king, does it? Yes, but did you botherto see the “back office job” I was talking about here --- the role the parents playedas MENTORS to the young cub. Our parents have mentored us all. We grew upunconscious of that fact! We are all what we are due to the tireless mentoring wereceived.

TM Manoj Nair, Director– Area I3, Division I

Today when we have stepped into the Savannah of the Toastmasters world, the meaning of theword mentor becomes very clear and visible. We discuss our speeches with our mentors andthen step on the stage and conquer the audience’s hearts. Please note that sometimes our mentorneed not be a toastmaster at all!

When we taste victory we toss our heads high in the air and look aroundthe audience with that look of sheer confidence on our face, then look for our mentor who isseated somewhere in the huge audience. Eyes meet. A silent bow of the head in that directionwith a quick glance before we exit the stage. The resounding applause when we step on thepodium to collect the winner’s trophy is the fee to be paid to the mentor and believe meToastmasters, the fee will always be paid in full.

Dear Toastmasters, I have a request to you today – you have tastedsuccess with the help of your mentor.

So now my dear lions and lionesses. In the afternoons let the little cubs frolic around you. Butnow it’s evening, the sun is setting on the Mara.Time for you to get up and take your protégé along for the hunt.

Happy hunting!!!

PICK A COIN AND SPEAK

When I was given the chance to take the role of Table Topic Master, I wanted the sessionto be unique from the usual table topic sessions. Since the theme of the meeting was related to the historicaltimeline. I decided to conduct the table topic session on the concept of “Pick A Coin And Speak”. I carried a fewcoins in a box, each of which was issued in a specific year. The speakers were expected to pick a coin and sharea memorable moment which happened in their life in the year of issue of the coin.

When the session started, everyone in the meeting room was very excited and eager toparticipate. It brought so many forgotten memories back to life. After picking up the coin, they went down theirmemory lane and polished those pearls which had gathered dust with time. Some remembered the happy and funtimes. For some, what it brought back were the memories of the painful times which they had overcome; whichhad made them stronger and better.

Since the speakers were expected to talk only about their lives, they were not hesitant tocome and speak. In fact, even the guests participated voluntarily and shared memorable instances from theirlives. The session created fun, giggles, and enthusiasm among everyone in the room. This made me happy andreduced my nervousness as a table topic master because I was taking up the role for the first time. Everyonewent back that day with a smile, maybe because of the sweetness of nostalgia. And you know what, I even wonthe “Best role player” award for that meeting.

SPEAK NOT JUST TO BE HEARD, BUT ALSO TO EXPRESS

If I were to pen my Toastmasters’ journey in a short sentence it wouldgo like this – Destiny is changed by those who act. Do you know anyone, who whilespeaking in front of an audience would go blank and blabber while fumbling mentally insearch of the next word to be blurted out? Well, that was me, up until 2010. For someone, towhom stuttering came naturally, public speaking was a far-fetched dream. Though I was aseasoned IT professional, my speaking skills were practically sub-zero. And then the bell rang– I heard about Toastmasters.

At first, like most of us – I was on the backseat, unimpressed, andreluctant. However, I still decided to attend one of their meetings to see if this could help mebridge the gaps I had. For the first few meetings, I was like a toddler fiddling with a new toy, unable to confirm my interest in it – though I was reasonably mesmerized by the overall feelof it. After a couple of meetings, I decided to give a more serious shot to it. “Slow and steadywins the race”, they say, and I took it that way. Once I got the hang of it, I never let theintermittent hiccups get the better of me. After having seen three failed attempts, Isuccessfully delivered my ‘Ice Breaker Speech’. That’s when, I promised myself, never tolook back again.

It wasn’t just me who found an improved version of myself, at the endof every speech. My fellow speakers at Toastmaster Re-iterated about this changeunequivocally. Apart from the speaking skills, I was also able to uplift my confidence level.

After benefitting significantly through Toastmasters, I can saythis with full conviction that it is far more than public speaking. In my opinion, it is aholistic personal development program that designed to help you improve yourconfidence, self-esteem, interpersonal and leadership skills. Strikingly, it allowspeople to grow at a speed with which they feel comfortable. I realize Toastmasters hasgroomed me to take on greater challenges in my life and find my inherent strengths;which I had failed to notice before. My two cents of advice – Do you want to carveout a better version of yourself? If you are looking for the right hammer and chisel;well, find it right here at Toastmasters. Just 'Go for it’.

CELEBRATION, A MANIFESTATION

Lights... Camera, Action! Sorry, we are not going to produce a movie here! Lights, music, food, fragrance, the laughter of people in vibrant attire are the main ingredients of a celebration. Isn'tit? Wouldn't it be too painful to imagine any celebration without all this? Mostly, yes. We celebrate to expressour gratitude, joy, and happiness.

Have you ever seen a child? Children are always in a celebratory mood. A celebrationfor the child can be bereft of any reason. Our entire life can be an expression of celebration too if we chooseto. It is about being in the present moment and being grateful for what we have. Enjoying the freshness ofevery new moment and living it to the fullest, in awe and being completely in it. We dissolve ourselves into itwhen we celebrate. If we see every moment as new and the one we have lived already to be past and like adream, there'll be no space for misery and unhappiness.

In Hindi, celebration equates to ‘Utsav’. It is an act of merriment, delight, a joyousoccasion. In Sanskrit, ‘Utsava’ is derived from two words, ‘Ut’ meaning removal and ‘Sava’ means worldlysorrows or grief. We celebrate the removal of the sorrows and grief from our life. We need to removesomething, which sticks and weighs us down. Let no sorrow or grief touch you. Even if it does, remainunaffected by it and even if you get affected by it, let it be the reason to celebrate, as it showed you thedarkness to cherish the light; it showed you the lows to take you to the heights.

Let us be the reason for celebration in the lives of the people around us, be the sourcewhich removes misery and sadness from their lives. Make life an unending celebration, irrespective of the day, date and reason. It is not just lights, colors and sweets, it's a way of life!

A CHAMPION HAS AWAKEN

I was born and brought up in a village near Mysore. My parents wantedme to excel in studies just like every other parent. But they had a very unique way ofmotivating me to study. They praised my other classmates in front of me; As a result, I studiedmore to feed the egotist within me. They never punished me for any of my mischiefs. Theyalways passed their message diplomatically, so that I would change. I remember themcelebrating my victories whenever I won speech competitions at school, excelled in academicsand when I landed my first job. They distributed sweets and were the happiest! They nevermissed an opportunity to boost my self-image; they cared for me and showered unconditionallove which gave me a strength. When we realize that there are people who support us at everystep, we become more competent and confident subconsciously.

The same kind of support I received in Toastmasters club. Theysupported, listened, taught and celebrated my smallest progress. Toastmasters influenced me ina very positive way. In the club, there is no room for negativity. Empowering one’s self-imageand helping members realize their true potential through public speaking is our club’s motto. Ireaped all the benefits of Toastmasters being a member and a leader during my tenure at TechMahindra. More than that I found my second family at Toastmasters club.

In December 2016, I gave a nomination speech for office bearer’sposition in our club. At that time I was still a new face at the club. That day all the membersliked my energy and enthusiasm so much that they elected me as a secretary of the club. Afterthat

they even celebrated my accomplishment. This changed me forever. I accepted moreresponsibilities, learned several leadership skills and other skills from the peoplearound me. I underwent a phenomenal transformation in the way I presented andexpressed myself. I am proud to say that its Tech Mahindra Bangalore Toastmastersclub that has helped to awaken the champion in me.

Friends, If you are yet to discover your second family. I wouldsuggest you speak to Toastmasters. They are here to spread love and lift people up.They welcome you and stand for your progress.

LIGHTING A CANDLE IN THE WIND

If the most devastating flood of the century almost brought Kerala to its knees, it alsobrought in an army of Good Samaritans who came from all over the country to help people get back on theirfeet. The popular phrase ‘Unity in diversity’ is best rephrased as ‘Unity in calamity’ to describe selflessnessof real-life heroes from different walks of life, different communities and different religions, in thecatastrophic event of Kerala Floods 2018.

One such outpouring of empathy was harbored by contributions from Toastmasterscommunity in a relief camp at Kannur in Koonanpalla tribal colony. I was personally involved in the reliefefforts and had run a campaign along with my friends who were volunteering in the affected areas ensuringthat relief efforts reach the most marginalized and vulnerable groups. Inside Toastmasters fraternity myrequest to raise funds was well received. Essential food items and dress materials for 52 families weredistributed with the funds collected jointly on the day of ONAM.

ONAM festival is the celebration of unity and oneness. On that day, I felt the truespirit of celebration. I would like to personally acknowledge those Toastmasters who countered theagonizing saga of adversity with a narrative of hope. Generous contributions were made by our DivisionDirector Arun Ramarathnam and TM Agnel Worth. Help poured in from other clubs too from TM RithunRegi, TM Manoj Nair(AD), Guru Prasad and Jithin CK. TM Nithila, TM Heera Pottekatt, TM BindhuBalegar, TM Garima Madavi, and TM Siva Arul were the strong pillars from our club who supported thiscampaign.

PATHWAYS - RIGHT NOW IS THE RIGHT TIME

Let's all embrace Pathways!!!! When I heard this sentence for the first time, I didn't knowwhat kind of change Toastmasters International is trying to bring to us. I was already halfway through mytraditional journey, Should I unlearn the things I already learned and start something entirely new? I had missedattending all the pathways sessions. I didn't choose my path and I was hesitant. It was at that time that my mentorasked me to be his evaluator in his Pathways Ice Breaker speech. Evaluating someone whom we look upon wastotally a different experience. The evaluation guidelines which came along with the evaluation template helped meto deliver a neat evaluation. And then there was another call from our current Area Director Manoj Nair to evaluatehis Pathways Ice Breaker. I asked myself am I going to add any value to senior Toastmasters with my evaluation? Igathered all my courage and evaluated such a senior leader.

This is the beauty of Toastmasters. Leaders are ready to listen, leaders are open for feedback, leaders are ready to learn from juniors. After all this, I couldn't resist myself from enrolling to Pathways. Yes! Itook the assessment and got Dynamic Leadership as my best-suited option. Then, I delivered my Ice Breakerspeech. It is just like a second chance to go back to school. I was energized after my speech. When mentors helpyou with answers, mentees will push you to learn more by questions. My search for answers ended when I found alot of materials on pathways. With the learning I got, I could also help my mentee club on Pathways. It is fullydigital and you can file your educational achievements yourself. More than the destination, the journey is beautiful.Pathways bring you various paths based on your expectations and preferences with pathways you can race withyour leaders and the wisdom is limitless This is my story. I hope you will also have a story about Pathways to sharenext time!

MEMBER TESTIMONIALS

TM HARSHITToastmasters has shown me a way to achieve wonders. I didn’t have the slightest idea how public speaking can give new directions in someone’s life. This platformimmensely helped me in acquiring skills, confidence and positive energy which are the most powerful tools for success. If it wasn't for toastmasters a vernacular

person like me would not have been playing the role of a VP Membership for an English speaking club.

TM ADITHI SHETTYIt’s an amazing platform which helps an individual to bring their words to life .Every step is a learning .I joined toastmasters club to improve my impromptuspeaking skills but it offers more than what I expected, from making acquaintances to good friends, from making mistakes to learning a great deal. The transitiontakes you from “will I be able to speak something” to “let’s give it a try”. To be a competent orator, one requires the discipline, speech content & structuring ,appropriate gestures and a good amount of constructive criticism ,all the ingredients need to come together in right quantity and toastmasters facilitates thatamalgamation to make you a competent speaker

TM SINDHU RI joined toastmasters with the aim of improving my communication skills and to be confident in front of an audience. It has been a year since I joined TechMahindra Bangalore Toastmasters Club. I attend the meetings regularly and I am the Sergeant At Arms of the club for the current term (July'18 to Dec'18). I'mvery happy to be a part of the club where members encourage and support each other. Delivering speeches and being regular to meetings has enhanced myconfidence and communication skill. I think Toastmasters is the best place for people like me to overcome the fear of public speaking and become a confidentspeaker.
