Full Problem Description:

The LCD Touch Screen (LCD-TS) becomes unresponsive to the touch of a finger or the stylus. The pointer (cursor) will either follow the location of the stylus momentarily then bounce back to its previous location, or completely ignore the pressure point. Attaching an external mouse to the server will not remedy the problem. In some cases the touch screen will execute a command on the Cinelister player that results in disrupting the playback of the show.

Fault Found:

A preliminary result of all investigations, the root cause of the unresponsive touch screen/cursor is the tension created by insufficient air between the conductive film and the glass of the touch screen device. Doremi believes external forces caused by over use/ applying too much pressure at the screen surface can cause the above. A majority of the tension seems to be around the center of the screen where most users will operate a majority of the time.

Remedy:

A reasonable workaround, approved by the touchscreen manufacturer, that is relatively simple and can be applied in field. Pierce a very small hole in the film (outer layer) by using a small sewing needle or a thumbtack (push pin) – See figures 1 and 2. This will allow the pressure under the conductive film (top of the LCD glass) to be balanced with the atmospheric pressure on top of the surface of the conductive film. The least intrusive the hole is, the better for the touchscreen.

The hole is recommended to be made in top left corner of the LCD. It can be done while the LCD is mounted on the server and powered ON.

The effect may take place immediately however in some cases it may take longer, up to 10 min. The next step is to recalibrate the touchscreen using the calibration utility on the server. This will complete the recovery process.

Notes: 1. It is not recommended to use a small knife because there is a high possibility of cutting through the film sensors. 2. There is no need (and is not recommended) to poke a hole for brand new monitors. This remedy is only recommended for LCD Touchscreens that exhibit this issue.

Concerns:

The possibility of water seeping through the hole created during cleaning process.

In general, you do not use water anywhere near electronic devices. Water or any type of liquid should not be applied directly to the screen during the cleaning process. Only a damp cloth should be used to clean the surface of the LCD-TS. The technician should apply soft pressure during the cleaning process.
