The specification of permeance of building membranes depends on a number of factors including construction type, materials, climatic data, site-specific conditions, and very importantly settings and maintenance of air conditioners as well as care taken to avoid damage to the membranes. The Ametalin web site www.ametalin.com provides guidance to assist designers in understanding the issues surrounding water vapour management in buildings, and offers solutions for a notional “typical” building at a number of locations around Australia. It should be understood that our guidance is just that; it is not definitive advice upon which to base a design decision. Users are advised NOT to rely on Ametalin’s general guidance, but to seek advice from a qualified engineer based on actual design and site conditions. It is almost impossible to guarantee that a building will never have condensation problems. The object of our guidance is to assist designers in making an appropriate trade-off between risk and cost. Correctly specifying building membranes – vapour barriers, vapour retarders and permeable membranes as appropriate, to manage vapour movement and reduce the risk of moisture problems, should be based on a hygrothermal analysis during critical months. This examines the temperature and dew point profiles through the building element. Ametalin consulting engineers can undertake a project-specific hygrothermal analysis based on parameters supplied by the client at a relatively modest cost.

The purchaser should independently determine the suitability of the product for the intended purpose. This product should be stored in a cool dry place.

Installation

AMETALIN THERMAL BREAK 6.5TM should be installed in

accordance with AS/NZS 4200.2:1994 Pliable Building Membranes and

Underlays, Part 2: Installation Requirements. Flexible insulation/sarking

type materials should be draped over 450 centre-to-centre rafters with

a sag of 40 mm. For larger rafter spacings sag should be increased

proportionally. In roofs and walls, install with 150 mm overlap via the

flap provided. Tape with AMETALIN Insulation/Ducting Tape. When

installed in double brick masonry and steel stud walls use Ametalin Cavity

Spacers as per installation instructions.

AMETALIN THERMAL BREAK 6.5TM is installed with the blue

anti-glare side facing out. AS 3959-2009 Construction of buildings in bush

fire-prone areas, requires that all sarking products be installed under roof

battens.

In floor applications, it is recommended to install AMETALIN

THERMAL BREAK 6.5TM above the bearers. To ensure drainage and

adequate escape of water vapour, three 10mm holes at equal spacing

across width of roll should be drilled through all the layers on the roll

before unrolling the material. The holes created will allow pooled water

to escape and an average Water Vapour Transmission (WVT) rate of 2760

grams of water per 24 hours every 200 mm to 1000 mm of the product.

AMETALIN THERMAL BREAK 6.5TM is not designed to

withstand prolonged direct exposure to the elements. Accordingly, upon

application of this product the outer wall should be installed without

delay. Aluminium foils should not come into contact with wet concrete or

mortar, as the aluminium is susceptible to alkali corrosion.

NCC/BCA Compliant

AMETALIN THERMAL BREAK 6.5TM complies with AS/NZS 4200.1:1994 and AS/NZS 4859.1:2002 and therefore satisfies all general requirements of the National Construction Code (BCA).

InsulationWhen installed facing an air space, AMETALIN THERMAL BREAK

6.5TM is a barrier to radiant heat, keeping buildings cool in summer and warm in winter, saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For indicative R-values in accordance with AS/NZS 4859.1:1994 for a particular application, please contact the manufacturer.

Specification NotesWhen specifying state the following: Application: Roof Insulation - Residential Metal Roof, Residential Tile Roof, Commercial Metal Deck Roof

Wall Insulation - Warehouse Metal Clad Wall, Stud Frame Wall, Brick Veneer Wall, Cladded Fixed to Battens, Reverse Brick Veneer Wall, Concrete Masonry Cavity Wall, Double Brick Cavity Clay

Product Name: AMETALIN THERMAL BREAK 6.5TM

Ametalin THERMAL BREAK 6.5™ satisfies the NCC/BCA requirements for sarking type materials. It complies with the requirements of AS/NZS4200.1:1994 for “Pliable Building Membranes” which is the deemed-to-satisfy standard recognised by the NCC/BCA P2.2.2 Weatherproofing. It has a low flammability index (not greater than 5) in accordance with AS1530.2:1993 which satisfies the NCC/BCA Part 3.7.1.9 Fire Hazard Properties (Class 1 & 10 Buildings). It also satisfies NCC/BCA specification C1.10 2 Table 1 Fire Hazard Property Requirements (Class 2 to 9 Buildings), as a sarking type material. Water Vapour Transmission (WVT) tested in accordance to AS/NZS 4200.1:1994 Vapour Barrier Classification: Medium, Water Barrier Classification: High. Material R-value of R0.16.
