TECHNICAL DEFINTION OF

TVIAS

• TVIAS stands for totally implantable venous access system.

• A TVIAS is a small medical appliance that used as a port (connection) to veins that is commonly known as a medical port .

• Usually it connects to veins such as the jugular, subclavian, and superior vena cava veins.

• Some medical ports are composed plastic, stainless steel, and titanium.

• They are most commonly made with silicon bases.

What is a TVIAS?

Surgeons decide which brand and type is suitable on a patient to patient bases.

When are Medical Ports Used?- Medical port are used

on oncology and hematology patients.

- It also used during hemodialysis

- During theses treatment it administers various drugs such as Taxol and Oxnal (usually in Chemotherapy)

DEFINTIONS:Oncology- Is a part of the medical field that focuses mainly on cancer and cancerous tumors.

Hematology- Is a section in internal medicine that deals with blood disease and blood forming organs.

Hemodialysis- Process of removing waste products from blood when kidneys are failing.

Implantation • Because medical ports are placed under the skin they have to surgical implanted and removed.

• This procedure is consider a low level out patient surgery that is usually preformed under a local sedative.

• It is placed in the upper chest below the clavicle allowing it to form a bond to the jugular or subclavian vein.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

• In most cases medical ports inflict less pain on the patient.

• Usually guarantees vein access unlike normal routine vein searches.

• Helps prevents bruising around needle entry sites and also is a proven easier way for nurses to administer chemotherapy drugs.

Disadvantages/Risk

• Infection and occur although it isn't common.

• Thrombosis (the of blood clotting) can occur.

• Also Pneumothrax can occur. This is when port tries to access vein and injures the lungs which may lead to chest to insertion
