Stylite Tapered Roof Insulation can be used as part of a new build roofing system or as an overlay solution for existing flat roofs.
It creates a fall that channels water to drainage outlets, preventing problems such as ponding that can lead to premature failure of the waterproofing system. Tapered insulation also removes the need for a structural roof fall, and can therefore help reduce the cost of the overall roof project.

Tapered Roof InsulationCreating a fall for flat roofs
Stylite Tapered Roof Insulation can be used as part of
a new build roofing system or as an overlay solution for
existing flat roofs. It creates a fall that channels water to
drainage outlets, preventing problems such as ponding that
can lead to premature failure of the waterproofing system.
Tapered insulation also removes the need for a structural
roof fall, and can therefore help reduce the cost of the
overall roof project. Manufactured off site, from high density
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), tapered blocks are bespoke
to suit your project specific requirements.
EPS offers the best cost to performance ratio of any
insulation type. With thermal conductivity from as low
as 0.030W/mK our Tapered Roof Insulation can help
designers achieve the current Building Regulation u-value
requirements.
Once the Tapered Roof Insulation is installed an EPDM
or Single Ply waterproofing membrane can be applied to
complete the roof.

Thermal Performance
Water Managment - one of the main functions of a cut
to fall roof, new build or refurbishment is to control the flow
of water and negate all standing water that can lead to
premature failure of the waterproofing system.
Water drainage should be designed in accordance with
BS EN 12056-3:2000 (Gravity drainage systems inside
buildings. Roof drainage, layout and calculation).
For tapered roof schemes U-value calculations are not
as straight forward as other structural elements because
of varying thicknesses and layouts of the insulation.
The average U-value can only be calculated when the
full scheme of falls has been specified. They should be
calculated in accordance with BS EN ISO 6946: 2007
“Building components and building elements – Thermal
resistance and thermal transmittance – Calculation
method”. Call us now for a U-Value Calculation on
01274 691 777.

Design Considerations

Insulation Solutions
Roof Design: Consideration should be given to the
recommendations of BS 6229:2003 (Flat roofs with
continuously supported coverings). Correctly designed
tapered insulation systems not only provide positive
drainage and appropriate thermal insulation – they can
also help to extend the life of the roof waterproofing
membrane.
Falls: The fall on a flat roof should be constant and steep
enough to ensure that rainfall does not pond. Typical falls
are 1:60 or 1:80, although we are able to manufacture
tapered pieces to any bespoke fall in increments of 1mm
to suit any roof size or layout.
Fire Performance: The fire rating when tested to
BS EN 13501-1:2007 + A1:2009 “Fire classification
of construction products and building elements.
Classification using test data from reaction to fire tests”
will be dependent upon the waterproofing system
specified, our EPS can be supplied with a Flame
Retardant Additive (FRA) if required.
Roof Loading: EPS tapered insulation is suitable for use
on roof decks that are subject to limited maintenance foot
traffic. Walkways should be provided on roofs requiring
regular pedestrian access. When the roof is complete,
protective boarding should be laid if additional site work is
to be carried out.
Identification: All our Tapered Roof Insulation blocks are
labelled according to their installation position as identified
on the system designers layout. This ensures a quick, yet
accurate installation on site.
