Don't Panic! A Hitchhiker's Guide to Emerging Contaminants

Understanding historical approaches to the fate, transport, and toxicity of substances we are already familiar with can greatly inform our strategy for managing “new” substances found on contaminated sites.

With expertise on contaminants of the past and present, Dr. Paul Nathanial and Ian Collins, the Technical Director and Senior Engineer of the Contamination Assessment and Remediation Service Line, will discuss how we can prepare for future unknowns in remediation projects and elaborate the extent to which GHD is prepared to safely manage toxic substances that have yet to be discovered.

Solving the PFAS Problem

Per- and poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are persistent, bioaccumulative in humans and animals, mobile, and have been assigned toxicity criteria that categorize them as some of the most toxic substances to deal with. These factors make them challenging and extremely costly to manage and treat.

Dr. Peter Nadebaum, a Principal of GHD and an accredited auditor in Australia, and Dr. Ryan Thomas, an Associate, Scientist, and member of the Innovative Technology Group (ITG) at GHD, will champion for sustainable remediation of contaminated soil, groundwater, sediment, and surface waters and share their holistic approach for assisting clients with PFAS-contaminated sites.

PFAS/Emerging Contaminants from a Due Diligence Perspective

Emerging contaminants, specifically PFAS, have gained considerable regulatory attention in North America. As a result, many clients are requesting our help in strategically identifying and managing risk during environmental due diligence efforts, and aligning those efforts with their risk tolerance.

With extensive experience in contaminated sites, from assessment through remediation, Jacquelyn England, Environment Technical Director, and Jennifer Quigley, an Executive Advisor, will speak to providing cost-effective site characterization, analytical techniques, and innovative remedial and mitigation approaches.

Presented by: Michael Ulph, Katrina McCullough & Lee Gedge

Communities and Emerging Contaminants - Building and Maintaining Trust to Help Manage Outrage

The outrage and distrust that comes with environmental contamination is not unique to one project sector or a specific geography. When contamination happens, the mitigation required extends beyond engineering or technical solutions.

Leaders in the field of Stakeholder Engagement and Communications, Michael Ulph and Katrina McCullough, will present alongside Lee Gedge, a Principal Environmental Scientist at GHD, to provide multiple perspectives on best practices when managing community relationships and regaining trust when remediating contaminated sites.
