1. A PC did not receive an update from SMS. What steps would we take to resolve this?

If SMS not updated in client system.

1. Need to check system getting IPaddress or not.2. Need to check system in domain or not3.Ensure that windows firewall should be off.

Above reason SMS will not update to the client system.

2. A user in a corporate network contacts service desk saying he/she has lost network connectivity: How will you troubleshoot the issue? What are the steps to followed?

First you check to see if the cable is in plugged in the machine. Then you check to see if you can connect to a web site.

3. A User calls in and complains that her computer and network is running very slow. How would go about troubleshooting it?

I would first ask the user whether every application on the computer is slow or is it just one particular application. if it is just one, try and sort that out.If the answer is all applications are running slow, look at common causes like, virus scans scheduled, free disk space on the home drive, RAM, lastly if the deployment team is rolling out any updates (which should not be done during business hours, but i've seen that happen too ;)If you suspect network latency, a simple ping test from the user's computer will tell you how many milli seconds network traffic is taking to reach the server.

First things first figure out if her computer is the only one that is working slow. Secondly if it is just her computer I would run some basic troubleshooting method. Check her latest anti-virus program make sure she is performing a scan if not on a daily every 2 days. Perform a diskcleanup defrag her drivers and hardrive.

Delete all of her temp files unwanted programs in start up and unwanted services. then increase her virtual memory and click apply for best performance option. (In win XP). Also delete temporary internet files from her profile. this is the correct way to clean the system. then check for the virus and if any virus scan and remove it.

First of all I have to check the RAM capacity processor frequency virual memory and OS drive space. Many time if we clean the event log & temporary files from the system we get a better performance. If we have large space in OS drive this will help the computer programmes to run smooth.

If I was there My first step is open msconfig.exe then remove heavy and unused files from startup then I removed the unused services not Microsoft. Then removed Temp Temperory Internet files History and restart. If the problem continues then we need to scan the PC through antivirus program after that I need to increase the RAM.

1. Check virutal memory2. Windows drive space3. RAM size4. Antivirus status5. Reboot the system

'Slow' is a relative question so first determine what the user is experiencing. Is it slow opening applications or while working in them? is this a networked application or local? If it is a website or network application the tech can try to open it from their workstation. When did this start? Can you check co-workers sitting near you to see if they also report slowness?

Also ask the user what if anything has changed since it was working 'correctly'. Ask if the user is working from the location they normally do -- maybe they are working at an alternate workstation working from home over VPN or other issue which they might not realize is a factor so they fail to inform you.

First question when did the problem start?

Is anyone else in the same work group experience slowness.

Does it happen all the time or is it intermittent any patterns of timings eg in the morning or late at night.

If they are you need to take the route of looking at network response times. User network test - First telnet or ping to an external website. If they can the network administrator will need to investigate.

Check how many users can painlessly be on the network concurrently

If solely relating to one computer

What task are you performing when you experience the slowness. Ask what browser and operating version they have.

thoroughly check the process they are using remote access if possible.

Work in safe mode to see if its still an issue. this brings the computer back to factory apps rather than added 3rd parties.

Check your programs list if anything was recently installed that

Does not need to be there of your recommended office virus scanner

Clear cookies

Clear historyMake sure you have all the windows updates.

Switch security of pop ups to on.

Make sure security level is medium high.

6. Define Low Level Formatting?

Low level formatting is a type of formatting where new track and sector are created after erasing old one. This type of formatting is very slow. Actually it is a outlining the track and sector of hard disk where actual data will be store and writing the control structures that define where the tracks and sectors are. After low level formatting data is permanently erased but from few software it is possible to recover data.

18. What is the IP range in networking side? How do we troubleshoot

Outlook? How do we configure ldap on Outlook?

I am hoping I am submiting the correct answer. IP range in netwroking side is related to DHCP and Address pools. Ex: 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.200 -> Can be defined as address range allowed to distribute and 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.9 are restricted to destribute to client computers.

LDAP on outlook can be configured through Tools menu->Account settings-Address books-Select new address book->Select LDAP address book->in next window add server details.

From Microsoft Outlook

Select: Tools->Account settings->AddressBook->New Address book-> select Internet Directory Service(LDAP) radio button-> Next step will take you to the window of server information or Logon information with username and password. Enter the server IP or address. :-)

24. what is the difference between windows xp and windows

2000 Windows 2000 and Windows XP are essentially the same operating system

(known internally as Windows NT 5.0 and Windows NT 5.1, respectively.) Here are some considerations if you're trying to decide which version to use:Windows 2000 benefits * Windows 2000 has lower system requirements, and has a simpler interface (no "Styles" to mess with). * Windows 2000 is slightly less expensive, and has no product activation. * Windows 2000 has been out for a while, and most of the common problems and security holes

Page 13: Technical Support Questions

have been uncovered and fixed. * Third-party software and hardware products that aren't yet XP-compatible may be compatible with Windows 2000; check the manufacturers of your devices and applications for XP support before you upgrade. Windows XP benefits * Windows XP is somewhat faster than Windows 2000, assuming you have a fast processor and tons of memory (although it will run fine with a 300Mhz Pentium II and 128MB of RAM). * The new Windows XP interface is more cheerful and colorful than earlier versions, although the less-cartoony "Classic" interface can still be used if desired. * Windows XP has more bells and whistles, such as the Windows Movie Maker, built-in CD writer support, the Internet Connection Firewall, and Remote Desktop Connection. * Windows XP has better support for games and comes with more games than Windows 2000.

XP is considerably faster and has a better UI. It also supports added features such as built in cd writing support system restore and beter networking features.

Windows Xp has a built in Security center whereas in 2000 its not there its a major difference. Then comparatively Windows XP NTFS partition is much better and has more features than windows 2000

Windows XP has 4 Versions Windows 2000 has 3 ver. (Win 2000 Pro Server & AD. Server).Windows XP has last known good configuration [last used desktop] which is not present in Windows 2000.

Remote Desktop connection in Windows XP. Windows 2000 does not have remote connection if we need remote connection have to use netmeeting or third party remote tools.

Security center is present in Windows XP Windows 2000 does not have security center.msconfig command is present Windows XP. Windows 2000 does not have it.

Automatic CD writing software is there. ie no needed third party drivers in Windows XP but Windows 2000 we need to write to CD via third party software.

Excellent graphic style in Windows XP.

25. What is the difference between server OS and desktop OS

With server OS we can manage desktop OS. Server Os is higher version of Desktop OS. Server OS is fully covered & managed security. For (ex) Domain Controller application

server print server etc. We make server with security.

For Desktop OS Normal PC. We make low level security.

Page 15: Technical Support Questions

Server OS gives centralised administration for users shared resources higher security. But Desktop OS gives local machine administration only.

Server OS is specially designed for running backend services like DHCP DNS SQL and IIS etc.and Desktop OS is special designed for running front end application and softwares.

Server OS can be used to configure a centralised administration for computer network. Desktop OS can be used to configure client Machine to SErver.

26. unable to view deleted files in recycle bin (winXP), I deleted my files, but i didn't see that files in my recycle bin.

Every one is suggesting what to do next time. he is asking how to recover the deleted file now.

First step you need to do is stop working on the hard disk in which you have lost the file. Otherwise, the file will be overwritten by another file.

Then run any of the file recovery software.

If you have already used the same hard disk, the chances of recovering the file is less.

Try this step just create an empty folder on the desktop and then delete it.Now go to recycle bin may be u ll find ur previously deleted files.

2) For each and every drive on ur harddisk there ll b some memory allocated for recycle bin. And this memory ll b limited. So if u hav deleted files with large memory then they ll b Permanently deleted from ur harddisk

you must be recyle configure 'not to store deleted stuff in to recycle bin'

RC on Rcycle bin for its properties and in properties window you click on 'not to store files into Rcycle bin'

Right click on Recycle Bin and click on Properties then uncheck the option "Do not move files to Recycle Bin.......". By selecting this option the deleted files will not be permanently deleted from the system. Only then the next deleted files could be viewed in the Recycle Bin

Right click on recycle bin -> properties -> do not move files to recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted. If this option is selected then unable to view deleted files in recycle bin.
