Motivation
• There are issues special to scientific and technological university libraries
• IATUL wants to encourage international cooperation, providing a new level of communication beyond the IATUL annual conference
• Combined efforts on a particular subject area can result in a high level of synergy to the benefit of an international community

• Each task force will focus on a particular subject area and define its own terms of reference, together with long and short term goals

Concept
• Following a call for expressions of interest in involvement, members are appointed by the IATUL Board for a period of two years, which may be renewed.
• Task forces are chaired by senior librarians who are appointed by the IATUL Board and will report to the Board. The task force chairman coordinates the interaction between group members

Concept
• Special interest groups will be encouraged to present the results of their endeavour to the annual conference
• Topics discussed by the task forces, and suggestions resulting from their expertise, may act as starting points for projects within the framework of the IATUL Cross Country Cooperation Programme
• The standard means of communication for Special Interest Groups will be E-Mail and telephone conferencing.
