Ubiquitous ID Center Organization

o Ubiquitous ID Center is a non-profit organization.o Established in June 2002o Our activity is based on the joint work with many

partners from all over the world.o Chair person

• Ken Sakamura (Professor, the University of Tokyo)

o Committee• Ubiquitous Networking Infrastructure Committee• Ubiquitous Communicator Committee

o 493 members with companies, universities, research laboratories, std. organizations, …

uID Technology Feature

1. Well-designed Network-Based Architecture• A tag contains an identifier (ucode), and a network provides

information services.• The Internet and mobile phone networks are compatible with UID

archicture.2. Various applications with “customers” for increasing their

quality of lifee.g. Food information tracking service, location-aware information

services, medical applications, …etc.3. Integrated Tag System

• We use not only RFID but also printing tag, active tag, sensor network tag, IR/RF beacons, … because there is no almighty tags.

• UID contains an integrated tag system classified into four interface categories and seven security classes

4. Security-Aware System• UID Architecture contains ubiquitous security systems “eTRON”.• Security classification of ucode tags

5. Mobile and small interface terminals are important for customers• Mobile phone, PDA with network connection capabilities, …

ucode: Ubiquitous Code

o ucode is a 128 bits number used for identification of objects.

o We embed these numbers in ucode tags for identification purposes.

o Resolution: Retrieving information about an object using the uID in the tag attached to the object.

integrated ucode tag system

o uID policy for ucode tags• “No almighty tags”

We should use several kinds of tags properly. • Users want seemless access for all tags. • Information security is important. • Network services can complement the

function of tags

o ucode tags are classified by two difference criteria.

1. Communication media o Category 0 ~ Category 3

2. Security levelo Level 0 ~ Level 7

Food Information Tracking for Food Safety

19

Food information tracking services (1)

o “Food communication” services• We bring the information of food production and

food distribution to consumers. The consumer refers the information, and confirms the safety of the food by themselves.

o For example, …• We have applied the RFID for the distribution of

fresh vegetables and fruits (about 200 items). • We also put the active sensor tags with

temperature sensor into the container box and pallets.

• The consumers can confirm every information about the food.

20

Food information tracking services (2)

o Quality management system• When food accidents occurs, we can

minimize the amount of trashed foods by the strictly food safety checking.

All of these might be dangerous!???

Food chain is unclear.

Result of experimental project

o Most Japanese consumers expressed their good impression for this information services.• Recently, Japanese consumers are very

nervous for the quality and safety of food. o Half of Japanese consumers will buy even

expensive foods if their quality is certified. • They will pay more 10% cost for food safety.

o There is a potential market for food safety information in Japan.

23

Medical Applications

o Ubiquitous ID technology is effective to prevent accidents or mistakes in hospitals.

o For example, • We put ucode tags on drug packages. • ucode tags notify doctors or nurses

which kinds of drugs are conveyed in the patient room.

• If the drug is not correct, the base station makes warning for the doctor or nurse automatically.

Location-aware Information Services

o We are embedding huge number of active tags, sensor networks, and RFIDs all over the Japan land.

o They support human navigation especially for handicapped people and foreign people.

o They are also used for supporting sight-seeing, shopping, supply chain management, and so on.

o It’s a kind of ITS: Intelligent Transport System for HUMAN.

Features of Ubiquitous Information Services

o Ubiquitous information services are effective for any kinds of business sectors.

o Application covers not only B2B services, but also B2C and/or C2C services• “Consumer” is just the key

o Increasing security and safety of citizens• Some services are “life-critical”

Page 29: Technologies and Applications of Ubiquitous ID Center

GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

29

New “consumer” services make new market

o B2B services do not make a new market because they are effective only for cutting cost. • e.g.

—Supply chain management

o New consumer services make a new market because they directly generates new values.• e.g.

—food safety information market —drug safety information market—tourist information service market

Standardization Areas

o To realize the various applications and information services, a lot of standardizations are necessary as follows:1. Identification number for objects and places

stored in ID tags2. Service finding protocols for ubiquitous

information services using RFID identification numbers

3. Ubiquitous information service protocols4. Data exchange format for ubiquitous

information services using ID tags5. ID tags (including contactless communication

protocols)more …
