Capabilities 1. Conduct research and development on vegetables , for example:
• Creating, Engineering and Improving vegetable varieties: chilli, shallot, potato, tomato, etc
• Developing various techniques and strategies as part of integrated crop management (ICM) for chilli, shallot, potato, tomato, etc.
2. Produce breeder seed through breeder seed production unit
3. Provide various services:
• laboratory tests, internship , • dissemination, etc
4. Collaborate with other institution, organization including private companies, for example:
• Competitive research (grant, etc.) • Efficacy tests for fertilizers and pesticides (in house and registration
trial )
Project background
• Potatoes are not considered as staple food in Indonesia • Consumer demand on potato continues to rise because its
role as food substitutes. • The national potato production should be improved • The availability of good quality seed potatoes in sufficient
quantities and at reasonable prices is important • Indonesia has developed a seed potatoes system • Seed potatoes propagation using the hydroponic method
has been developed in many countries in world. • However, the hydroponic method has not been widely used
in Indonesia.
• The utilization of resistance varieties and pests and diseases-
free plant material is effective and efficient method to minimize pests and diseases attack.
• IVEGRI has released various resistance varieties of potatoes and developed the tissue culture technology to produce virus-free seed potatoes.
• Combination of those technologies with seed potatoes multiplication using hydroponic method is expected to generate virus and soil-borne pathogens-free seed potatoes in sufficient quantities to meet the seed potatoes need in Indonesia.
• The study on the combined tissue culture technology and seed potatoes propagation using hydroponic methods that comply with the Indonesian circumstances is needed
Project background
2. Main Activities Two main activities will be conducted during the 1st year of
the project:
a. Base line survey of seed potatoes production in Indonesia.
b. Management of nutrients appropriate for the seed
potatoes production of various potato varieties released by
IVEGRI
2. Main Activities
a. Base line survey of seed potatoes production in Indonesia.
• Aim to collect information regarding to the seed potato
reproduction system in Indonesia.
• Visit 6 potato production centers in Indonesia (West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra)
• Interview seed potato producers, potatoes farmers and other stakeholders
2. Main Activities
b. Management of nutrients appropriate for the seed potatoes
production of various potato varieties released by IVEGRI
• Aim to know the seed potatoes propagation using hydroponic methods appropriate for potato varieties released by IVEGRI.
• Aeroponic is selected for this current study • In the greenhouse or screen house in Lembang using the Split Plot
Design with nutrient solution as the main plot and potato varieties released by IVEGRI as subplots.
• Nutrient solution used in this activity is the nutrient solution tailored based on the potato nutrient needs.
• Various parameters will be observed including plant growth, plant analysis (nutrient absorption), yield and quality of the harvest (water content, reduced weight, harvest time, the size of potato tubers).
Seed-potatoes is considered as one key of key factors for successful potato production
It is important to select appropriate seed-potatoes propagation method that can produce acceptable quality of seed-potatoes based on the agro-ecological conditions and its feasibility for commercial production.

5. Project impact & recommendation
• The project activities will be started in 2017 budget year
the impacts and recommendations are not available at this
moment.
• However
to obtain valuable information regarding to the seed potatoes
system in Indonesia and the financial and technical feasibility of
seed potatoes multiplication using hydroponics.
conduct research to study the hydroponic methods that suitable
for Indonesian circumstances.
• In the final year of the project, the seed-potato multiplication using
hydroponic method will becoming known and used by seed potatoes
stakeholders in Indonesia.
