“Under Technology for Education 20/20, every primary and secondary school teacher is being connected to today’s digital revolution.

Our teachers and students will not be left behind. My Administration is transforming lives as we connect city and village schools and teachers to information and knowledge on the Internet. We are narrowing the gap that separates those with and without access to information and knowledge, thereby broadening opportunities for a better life. I congratulate LIME for partnering with my Administration in providing every primary and secondary school teacher with a competitive edge.

I commend Honourable Dr. Edmond Mansoor, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, and his team for pioneering work in ensuring the phenomenal success of the CONNECT ANTIGUA & BARBUDA INITIATIVE.”

Honourable Dr. Baldwin Spencer Prime Minister

Under the Technology for Education 20/20 component of the Connect Antigua & Barbuda Initiative, one thousand, six hundred teachers

received a high speed Lenovo laptop fully equipped with a camera and a re-writable DVD drive complete with a beautiful carrying case.

The most important technological event of our time is the ascendancy of the computer. Computers already play a prominent role in many aspects of our lives, from communication to entertainment.

In several countries, education is already being organized largely around the computer. Computers permit a degree of individualization-personalised coaching almost-which in the past was available only to the rich.

Multiple evaluation studies have demonstrated that school improvement programs that employ technology for teaching and learning yield positive results for students and teachers. Given that many schools and teachers have only recently gained access to technology for teaching and learning, the positive outcomes of these studies suggest a future for education that could be

quite bright if our Nation maintains its commitment to harnessing technology for education.

The adoption of new and emerging technologies by schools and classrooms offers even more reason to be hopeful. With sufficient access and support, teachers will be better able to help their students comprehend difficult concepts and engage in learning, provide their students with access to information and resources, and better meet their students’ individual needs. If students and teachers take advantage of the opportunities presented to them, technology will enhance learning and improve student achievement for all students.

There are today about 10,000 websites that offer access to as many as 300,000 lesson plans.

Every primary and secondary school teacher, both in public and private schools, has been provided with the opportunity to leverage on the empowerment potential of the Internet and to further his/her professional development.

The Government of the Honourable Baldwin Spencer has manifestly demonstrated its commitment to the teachers in our twin-island Nation. Our commitment will continue to grow from strength to strength.

Principal of the St. Joseph’s Academy, Mr. Rudolph Davis, is pleased as punch to receive his laptop from Honourable Dr. Edmond Mansoor.

Mr. John Mussington, Principal, Sir McChesney George Secondary School“As teachers, we are faced more and more with the challenges of preparing our young people to be able to function effectively in today’s world. And today’s world is lodged firmly in the information age. No longer can we view the computer and a connection to the Internet as being luxuries. It is a vital tool that all of us need to be equipped with to function in this information age. And the laptop initiative will guarantee that every single teacher is now provided with that basic tool and full access to the Internet. The impact will be a great one.”

Myrna Isaac, Principal, St Mary’s Secondary School “We are now living in a technological age, and if the students are supposed to be in line with technology, then the teachers must also be in line as well. We must know what it is about in order to impart and to guide our students. I have been using my laptop. As a matter of fact for this year, I have not used my desktop at home because I have been using my laptop basically for everything. Even in staff meetings, I use my laptop rather than taking notes on paper.”

E. Jonah-Greene, Principal, Clare Hall Secondary School“The initiative empowered our teachers with the means to integrate technology into the classroom. We have more teachers asking to use our projector at Clare Hall Secondary so it means the technology is being used in the classroom. At Clare Hall Secondary, we are also planning to have professional development sessions where we will teach teachers how to use power point presentations, digital storytelling, and simple programs like movie maker, which are on the system. And they can actually use these programs in the classroom to make the teaching/learning experience more exciting.”

Ray Skerritt, Math Teacher, St Mary’s Secondary School“The Technology for Education 20/20 program is wonderful; it has given teachers an additional tool to work with. We have become accustomed to certain methods of teaching, but through the laptop initiative and the use of the Internet, we are now exposed to other methods. For instance, for one of the lessons that I am planning at the moment, instead of just using the chalkboard, I am using a projector to animate the lesson. So instead of just writing a number on the board and erasing it, students will see the numbers actually moving around and for students, especially those with a poor attention span, the animation will keep them interested.”

Hyacinth Gonzalves-Barreiro, Principal, Five Islands Primary School“I am so pleased to see the teachers using their laptops in the classroom and the children are so enthusiastic; they are so focussed on the screen, it is as if they are visual learners and this helps to capture their imagination. I see it working in the classrooms. I used to be so afraid of technology, but we have to move with the times. The children seem to know more than us, but we have to get with it, so we can help them to help us.”

Francille Francis, Kindergarten Teacher, Five Islands Primary School“I’m a Kindergarten teacher and my students learn primarily through seeing pictures and the use of visuals, which make the learning experience more interesting. Since I have received my new laptop, it makes it so much easier to find material for my class. I think it is the best thing that has ever happened to teaching in a long time. We were talking about the body in my class and I was able to go on the computer, go to a YouTube video and show them the heart pumping and they were so excited to see and hear the heart at work. I would like to urge my colleagues to put their laptop to good use because it’s helpful and there is so much we can do with it.”

Chetisha Jacobs, Grade Four Teacher, Five Islands Primary School“I think it is one of the best initiatives the Government has ever undertaken for teachers. I have used it to show videos in science. It has helped me in my research for class preparation tremendously. My students love it; once I get out that laptop they all automatically take their positions in class to see what I will be using it for.”

Dr. Hensworth Jonas, Principal, Baptist Academy“I am very pleased that the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has embarked on this initiative. It is going to make us competitive both regionally and globally. And while personally I would chose a trained mind over technological mastery, because I believe that would just follow, we must understand that in the 21st century this technological mastery is indispensable so we are very happy to be on board with this laptop initiative.”

Cheryl Morris, Principal, The Seventh Day Adventist School“It has been my pleasure to see teachers taking their laptops to class not simply to type on but to make classroom presentations. The students also have been showing more interest in that which is being presented in the classroom. We have two projectors that are generally in the office and they might be used a few times a month, but presently they are used every day. So I don’t have enough projectors because so many teachers are using their laptops to show slides and movies as it relates to the subject matter they are teaching.”
