IELTS writing task 2 sample

TRANSCRIPT

In recent years, farming practice has changed to include methods such as factory farming and the use of technology to improve crops. Some people believe these developments are necessary, while others regard them as dangerous and advocate a return to more traditional farming methods. Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion.

There is no doubt that as history progresses, technology evolves. Its growth is manifested in various fields, especially agriculture, where modern practices such as factory farming and genetic engineering are beginning to garner interest and support. While many embrace the trend, seeing it as a positive change, others fear of the uncertain and dismiss the new technology as risky. There are merits for arguments against the application of technology in farming. The new inventions, while admittedly useful, are currently experimental and have yet to be testified in any large-scale field test. Therefore, if there are any possible negative effects, they will affect a great number of consumers before being detected. Genetic engineering, for example, could chunk out species of super-plant which have disproportionately enormous crop yield; however, public consumers are often concerned of potential carcinogenic compounds in the crop, the risk of which may not have been thoroughly eliminated with adequate field testing. However, there are also reason to advocate more technologically advanced agriculture. New technology represents a promising solution to properly feed the huge and ever-expanding population. It has been observed that traditional farming methods are unsustainable, being too resource-intensive and inefficient. For example, it may take thousands of tons of water to produce a ton of beef. On the other hand, a better approach would be laboratory culturing, where meat is grown in test tubes or dishes. This has been reported to maximize efficiency and minimize waste, translating to reduced stress on the environment and the worlds natural resources. In conclusion, new technology entails unknown risks, but it helps alleviate the problem of overpopulation and is the key to a more sustainable future. My opinion would be that each new technology should only be applied when its ready, after thorough field testing to minimize possible side effects.
