Technology & Medicine The field of medicine has been continuously growing and using technology as a major solution to develop cures
The use of technology have significantly increased in the past century
i. To relieve pain and sufferings
ii. To promote life
iii. To control diseases
iv. To operate mechanically in surgeries
v. For diagnosis of various ailments
Various Benchmarks in Medical Technology
Invention and use of mechanical devices like
a. Stethoscope - to hear heart and lung soundsb. Sphygmomanometer – to measure BPc. Introduction of X-Ray in medicine fieldd. Electroencephalogram experiments to check brain activitye. Haemodialysis machine to dialyze blood of a comatose patientf. Use of heart and lung bypass machinesg. Use of robots and lasers in surgeries especially in Ophthalmology (Eyes)h. Technological idea of glass and refraction were used in medicine to develop
Spectacles that aided bad visioni. Use of Ultrasound to see fetus and related diagnosisj. Use of pacemaker to regulate heart beatk. Use of Radiotherapy to cure cancer
Contributions of Chemical technology included -
a. Successful development of Aspirinb. Vaccination system introduced in schools to prevent various
fatal diseases and biggest proof of its efficiency being prevention of smallpox after vaccination
c. Use of Insulin to treat diabetesd. Vaccine for diphtheria and tetanus caused by bacteriae. Use of Penicillin to successfully cure Infectionf. Various Chemotherapy Drugs have been prepared that have
raised the cure rate for cancerg. Development of immuno-suppressors that were used in
patients who have had transplants
Contributions from Genetic Engineering have enabled us to develop various methods to manifest useful Vaccines, anti-serums etc using bacterial and animal hosts that are used on very common basis
Importance of Medical Technology
Increases productivity and competence› With advancement of medical equipments,
documentation and records are readily available, reducing the number of medical errors.
Increase the quality of care› With Technology involved care of the patients could be
done in a better manner which was difficult when done manually
Faster Recovery› Surgeries have become easy and moreover with use of
laparoscopic cameras precise small incisions can be made which heals faster
Higher Economy› Vast number of jobs are created as well as with
increasing availability of technical equipments cost of medical care decreases
Time efficiency› The amount of time spent in treatment is decreased
that results in more healthcare services provided in less amount of time to a large population
Self Awareness› Technology has created medical awareness in people.
Internet & self administered devices are often used for self diagnosis
Advancement in Medical Technologies
Barren couples may now have kids as fertilization is done outside body and the embryo is implanted in a compatible surrogate mother or the real mother herself if she is fit for it
Stem cells are being used to grow various body parts from donors and as they are from their own body, they aren’t rejected
MRI & CT Scans are extensively used to detect ailments
Many diagnostic tests can be carried out in a fraction of time using latest inventories and equipments
Due to increased Vaccination Bacteria and other pathogens are becoming resistant to antibiotics and other anti-pathogenic drugs.
So as to control it genetic engineering is being massively utilized to develop and test new strains of antibiotics that could be used against them.
Newly Suspected EBOLA Virus & Some other INFLUENZA strain Viruses are being studied using techniques like PCR ( Polymerase Chain Reaction)
Genetic Studies Using Modern Technology have made us to successfully diagnose genetic diseases and dominantly treat them with their causes being known
Advancement in Prosthetics industry have significantly
revolutionized the world Every moment new ideas are being brought in action to
develop advance prosthetic limbs Now people with these issues may not only live their
normal life but to a major extent carry it on at normal pace just like a normal individual
Army personnel who lost their limbs in war are readily moving on in their life with their use and best example to demonstrate it is
THE PARALYMPICS
Technology have readily helped to keep medical
practices as safe and sterile as possible to give maximum success rate
Development of state of the art art hospitals and medical care centers have really lowered down the mortality rate
The rate of infections during surgical procedures have been lowered to extreme levels. Isolation wards , hyperbolic oxygen chambers are very good examples of medical advancements
Ethical Issues Few of the medical processes are costly and are not available to economically
lower sector of the society
Many of the medical tests are run on animals for the results and many a times they die. So it do bring upon issue of animal cruelty
It is very commonly seen in many parts of the world that individual or organizations with equipments and technology which is still not so commonly available but needed , is misutilised for high amount of money
Genetic experiments may result in some living forms that may be resistant to present medicinal anti pathogenic drugs and if exposed may result in a new disease that may spread to who knows what extent !
As new technologies are being developed , the amount of natural resources being used have increased and so is the pollution whether it may be physical or biochemical
Conclusions In past few decades medical technology has come very far
and has helped people to live a better, healthy, disease free and longer life.
Things which were unknown before are being extensively studied to its cores with latest technologies from microscope to MRI and even electron microscopes.
Though not totally safe and perfect medical technology have helped he living world to a great extent.
The merits are dominating over the demerits so taking care and precautions they are being modified as per required.
Thus we may conclude that technology will save our minds and bodies.
