What does it mean to be on Probation?
It means your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
is between 1.00 and 2.00.
It means that as per UNIVERSITY-WIDE policy, you are restricted in the number of courses that you can take.
It means that you are in academic jeopardy. Simply put, you are at risk of being Required to Withdraw from the program.
Categories of Students on Probation
1. ON PROBATION FOR THE FIRST TIME Your CGPA is below 2.00.
2. CONTINUING ON PROBATION You were on probation last semester, but did not succeed in raising your CGPA above 2.00.
3. ‘QUALIFYING’, ‘RESTRICTED’ or ‘FRESH START E.A.P.’ PROBATIONARY STUDENTS If you have signed a qualifying or a restricted probationary contract, this seminar does not apply to you. Please contact Tara Douglas if you need assistance.
What are my academic obligations if I am on Probation?
1. YOU MUST SIGN AND SUBMIT A PROBATIONARY CONTRACT You will do this today after the seminar.
2. YOU MUST RESTRICT YOUR COURSE LOAD
Full-time students may take up to 4 courses. Part-time students may take up to 2 courses.
3. YOU MUST MAINTAIN A TGPA OF 2.0 OR HIGHER
To achieve a ‘Clear’ standing, you must raise your CGPA above 2.00. You must avoid at all costs a TGPA below 2.00, which will result in your being ‘Required to Withdraw.’
4. Regardless of your TGPA, if you fail to achieve a CGPA of at least
1.00, you will be REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW.
Your Obligations
Sign a Probationary Contract
= Failure to sign will result in deregistration from all your Winter 2013 Courses
Enroll in no more than 4 courses if you are a full-time student, or 2 courses if you are part-time
Achieve a TGPA of 2.00 or higher this semester
Your Obligations
REASONS : 1. It is the university’s official way of communicating
with students. 2. We don’t know if it’s really you if you use another
email account. 3. It could be filtered by Ryerson; and you think you
communicated but you didn’t. 4. Ryerson and YOU have an official record of
communication.
First Advice: Your Choice of Courses
Enroll in at least one previously failed course. Success in a previously failed course has the greatest positive effect on your CGPA.
Complete lower-level courses (years one and two) BEFORE attempting upper-level courses (years three and four).
What happens when you repeat a course? The Bad News
The grade earned for a repeated course is substituted for the previous grade in calculating your Cumulative Grade Point Average, even if the later grade is lower. Both attempts are recorded on your transcript.
If you fail a required course for the third time, you will be Permanently Withdrawn you will be ineligible to continue in the Business Management Program.
If you fail an elective course for the third time, you must clear the requirements of that elective group by enrolling in a different course within that same group.
What happens when you repeat a course? The Good News
Repeating a course and replacing it with a higher grade can have an enormous positive impact on your cumulative GPA.
For example, if you repeat a course that you previously failed, you are replacing a 0 with a 2. Let’s say that your first semester you got a B in ITM102 (3.00), a C in ECN104 (2.00), a C- in Politics (1.67), a D+ in (1.33) in QMS 102 and an F ( zero) in ACC100: 8 divided by 5 = 1.6.
What happens if we replace that failed course with a C? (not an A or a B but a lowly C)= 10 divided by 5 = 2.0
GPA Adjustment Form
If you fail a course that is not required as part of your program (i.e. it is an elective course), you may take another elective course that will be used as a replacement in the calculation of your CGPA. Use a GPA Adjustment Form.
Using a GPA Adjustment Form will not replace an “F” from your transcript, but it will replace the previous elective grade in the calculation of your CGPA.
You must submit the GPA Adjustment Form to Enrollment Services when you enroll in the course, and NOT after receiving your grade! This form can be found at: www.ryerson.ca/forms.
What if I have an ‘INC’ grade(s)?
You must arrange a timeline for completing the requirements of the course with your instructor as soon as possible, as INC grades can interfere with the assignment of your true Academic Standing.
Any outstanding work or alternative examination must be completed within a specified date within three months of the submission of the INC. If the work is not completed before the deadline, the INC will become a grade of ‘F’.
Be aware of deadline date to drop a course
It is your responsibility to be aware of the deadline date(s) for dropping a Continuing Education or Distance Education course in good Academic Standing. Typically, this day is before the eighth scheduled class.
What if something goes wrong during the semester?
Deal with your problem immediately. Get in touch with your advisor, who can recommend supports on campus to assist you. You can also make an appointment at the Centre for Student Development and Counseling.
Always gather third-party documentation of your actions. Proper documentation is crucial in the event of a future request for accommodation or appeal.
Illness, death or personal/family crisis which cause long absences from classes are legitimate circumstances that can impact your academic performance but you will require timely, third-party documentation.
What is third-party documentation?
Third party documentation can be in the form of:
A Ryerson Medical Certificate
A counselor’s note or physician’s letter
Other legitimate or official documents procured that support your claim(s).
Contacting your advisor can be your first step in dealing with issues as they arise, but ultimately you will need to support any request for accommodation with third-party documentation.
What happens if my TGPA is below 2.00 while on probation and I am Required to Withdraw?
You will be required to ‘sit out’ and not be permitted to take courses for a minimum of 12 months
Under some conditions, you may be eligible for the Fresh Start Program. Details about this program are available at www.ryerson.ca/currentstudents/academics/reinstate
Your return to the Business Management Program after you have been Required to Withdraw is NOT GUARANTEED, and will be denied in most cases. It is therefore important that you meet the requirements of the contract you are signing today.
Other implications of being Required to Withdraw
In addition to the academic consequences of being ‘Required to Withdraw,’ students are encouraged to pay back any OSAP loans they have while they are withdrawn from TRSBM. Furthermore, if/when a student returns after being ‘Required to Withdraw,’ he/she may not be eligible to receive any OSAP funding during their ‘qualifying’ semester (when they resume their studies.)
In summary, you must:
1. Sign and submit a probationary contract before the end of the seminar today.
2. Immediately drop your course load to no more than four (4) courses; two (2) if you are a part-time student.
3. Avoid at all costs a TGPA below 2.00, or a CGPA below 1.00, which will result in your being ‘Required to Withdraw.’
Your Contract
Signing and handing in your contract today is proof of your attendance at today’s seminar.
Fill out both copies of the contracts entirely. The PINK OR YELLOW copy is yours, the WHITE copy is to be submitted to the department.
