We consider it an amazing honor, a wonderful privilege, and a huge responsibility to host a licensed TEDx event on our beautiful island - one of the most isolated population centers on the planet. We may be isolated, but thanks to the incredible impact of online video and the renowned TED/TEDx platform, we are able to share Hawaii’s most fascinating thinkers, doers and performers with the world.

Kealoha is an internationally acclaimed poet and storyteller, and the first Poet Laureate of Hawaii. He has performed throughout the world -- from the White House to Brazil and Switzerland, and is the first poet in Hawaii’s history to perform at a governor’s inauguration. Kealoha represents Hawaii at the National Poetry Slam, has been honored as a “National Slam Legend”, and featured on HBO’s Brave New Voices series. He is an MIT graduate with a degree in Nuclear Physics, and internationally celebrated for articulating his passion in a way that engages audiences around the world. Kealoha was one of TEDx Honolulu’s sensational speakers in 2011, and we

are honored to have him emcee the event in 2012.

After eight years of leading the Game Group and serving as the Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association, Jennifer founded Code for America, where she works with talented web professionals and cities around the country to promote public service and reboot government. She recently ran the Web 2.0 and Gov 2.0 events for TechWeb, and co-chaired the successful Web 2.0 Expo.

TED regulations require 25% of each TEDx event to consist of TED.com talks, so we will share four relevant TED.com videos with you throughout the day. He is also the President and CEO of H2 Technologies, a developer of hydrogen application systems for energy storage and transportation. Olin is a technology innovator who is nationally recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year for Social Impact (HVCA), Small Business Advocate of the Year (SBA), and as one of the 25 people who will shape the next 25 years

(Hawaii Business). He cofounded several companies, and has helped invent pioneering technologies in multiple fields, including website localization and crowdfunding. Olin’s technologies have been adopted by several Fortune 500 companies, as well as organizations like MIT and even TED. He spent half his life in the U.S. Navy, the Peace Corps, and several non-profit organizations. Mark Patterson’s vision for the Women’s Community Correctional Center is to create a Puuhonua – a sanctuary, a place of healing and transformation. His strategy includes taking a community-building approach through partnership formation that will have a transforming systemic effect on the Criminal Justice System, utilizing mind, body, spirit and place-perspective, and incorporating a trauma informed system of care framework. With over 25 years of public safety experience in both Hawaii and Nevada, his career began as an adult corrections officer, now a Warden for the past five years. Mark was raised on the island of Oahu in Waianae, he is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools, attended New Mexico Military Institute, and holds a degree in criminology from Florida State University.

Candy Chang is an artist who wants to make cities more emotional. She believes our public spaces can better reflect what is important to us as a community and individuals. She is a TED Senior Fellow, a Tulane Urban Innovation Fellow, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and was named a “Live Your Best Life!” Local Hero by Oprah Magazine. By combining local art with civic engagement and personal well being, she has been recognized for exploring new strategies for the design of our cities in order to live our best lives.

When singer/songwriter Mailani first stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist, in addition to winning our hearts with her vocal stylings, she also won another Na Hoku Hanohano award, which she received in the past as a member of the popular duo Keahiwai. With two solo albums that beautifully represent innovative and respectful interpretations of Hawaiian standards, as well as several original compositions in both Hawaiian and English, Mailani blends the contemporary and the traditional in ways that delight aficionados of both genres. She is a University of Hawaii graduate with a degree in Hawaiian studies, and she’s as passionate about the islands as she is about her music.

Teresa Wong leads a “think tank” created to facilitate innovative synergies between clinicians, scientists, and community partners locally, nationally and internationally. Fusing her 20 years of clinical expertise with her understanding of rapidly developing technologies, she challenges the premise of what physical rehabilitation ought to be. Teresa has written numerous articles on stroke rehabilitation for various professional publications, and presented on topics such as integrating robotics into rehabilitation programs in the United States as well as Canada, Beijing, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Lucie is an actress and professional singer/songwriter influenced by Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Jewel, Eva Cassedy, Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. She uses her voice as her primary instrument, with her travel-guitar “Martin” strumming along wherever her song may take us. It’s not uncommon for Lucie to visibly shift as the music starts to channel spontaneous lyrics, sweeping the audience to arrive together with a collective exhale at a new destination. She shares her gift in a very interactive, healing and fun workshop called

Kent Larson’s projects through the MIT House_n research consortium in the School of Architecture and Planning, and MIT Media Lab’s Changing Places Group, are dedicated to developing technologies that solve contemporary issues in the home, the workplace, and the city. Kent practiced architecture in New York City for 15 years, and wrote several architectural publications for the New York Times. His current work has three focuses: responsible urban housing, ubiquitous technologies, and living lab experiments to test his group’s designs in practical environments.

With the growing population on our small island, we thought Kent Larson’s question rather fitting: “How can we fit more people into cities without overcrowding?” With designs like the quick-change apartments and other innovations, can future cities really work like the small villages of the past?

Scott Fisher has been working for the Maui Coastal Land Trust since 2003, leading all aspects of the ecological restoration work conducted by the land trust. With an M.A. in peace studies and native Hawaiian strategies of peacemaking and reconciliation, his Ph.D. explored how communities make decisions over natural resources. He has served on the Maui/Lanai Island Burial Council and, more recently, as a board member of the Hawaii Wetlands Joint Venture, Public Access Trails Hawaii, the Friends of Midway Atoll, and the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council.

With over 30 years of hiking and outdoor recreation experience, Aaron Lowe has been managing all 100 miles of forestry trails on Oahu since 1995. This includes administration and maintenance, from chain sawing

large fallen trees with prison inmates, to authorizing a trailside permit for major film productions like “The Hunger Games.” Aaron believes that human respect for nature can start with a simple hiking trail, and wants to implement creative ways for people to enjoy, learn and respect nature. To that end, he is working on developing a sculpture trail, and uses modern forms of technology to expand his interpretive sign program.

As an internationally renowned photographer, Brian Bielmann has traveled extensively with many of the world’s best surfers, including Bruce and Andy Irons, Kelly Slater, and many others. He captures all aspects of the sport, and continues to push the boundaries of photography both above and below the water. His passion for surfing and photography have kept him on the cutting edge for over 35 years. He has been published in every major surf publication around the world, and is still considered one of the most prolific and inspiring photographers of the modern era. Brian is a model example of how one person can make a huge difference in the lives of many through Technology, Entertainment and Design.

Natalie has been awarded Female Vocalist of the Year by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists at the Na Hoku Hanohano Award ceremonies in 2006, 2009 and 2012. Her angelic voice dances playfully and soars effortlessly, and immediately captures your attention and moves your soul. Although singing is her passion, her first love is the hula. Daughter of na kumu hula, Olana and Howard Ai of Halau Hula Olana, Natalie garnered the coveted title of “Miss Aloha Hula” at the 1990 Merrie Monarch Festival. She travels internationally, sharing her gift with the world, but her feet remain firmly planted on the island,

among the roots of her family and the land.

INSIDE OUTINSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work.

The 2011 Street Artist and TED Prize winner JR announced his wish to turn the world “Inside Out”. He invited people around the globe to share a photo portrait of themselves along with a statement about what they stand

for, and that’s when local photographer Rodel Casio, pictured above, organized the Honolulu Inside Out Project, and dubbed it “The ‘Ohana Bunch”. Regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion or geographical region, we are ‘ohana.

A small selection of the images from the project are shared with you outside on the Aulani lawn today. Together with hundreds of other images we simply didn’t have room to display, they will be plastered on the side of an abandoned building or construction site, the location of which has not been determined yet.

Rodel Casio conveys his extensive background in portrait photography by capturing the essence of what makes each of us unique yet beautifully human at the same time. He successfully creates captivating images by delicately balancing light, shadows, depth and intuitive timing.

In 2010, after years of developing and expressing his creative talent with Fashion Photography and Graphic Design on Maui, Rodel changed directions (and locations), to simplify the glamour of a shot in order to express the core of what got him interested in photography in the first place: the subtleties that make us appear different even though we are all the same. Now on Oahu, Rodel was inspired to participate in the Inside Out Project, and demonstrate our community’s commitment to stand united. Unique. Beautiful. Simple.
