The TED Prize is awarded annually to the greatest idea shared on TED, helping to combat poverty, take on religious intolerance, improve global health, tackle child obesity, advance education, and inspire art around the world.

This year, for the first time ever, the TED Prize was not awarded to an individual, but to an idea on which our planet’s future depends: the City 2.0.

Today, October 13, 2012, the TEDx platform will harness the power of people across the globe in hundreds of cities, featuring the brightest local minds and biggest hearts.

Speakers can focus on themes including culture, transportation, education, health and recreation, all elements whose presence will dictate the success of our future cities.

Page 3: TEDx Honolulu 2012 Program

I am the crucible of the future.

I am where humanity will either flourish or fade.

I am being built and rebuilt every day.

I am inevitable. But I am not yet determined.

I wish to be inclusive, innovative, healthy, soulful, thriving. But my potential can only be reached through you.

You can forge a new urban outlook. Begin by connecting. Imagine a platform that brings you together, locally and

globally. Combine the reach of the cloud with the power of the crowd. Connect leaders, experts, companies, organizations

and citizens. Share your tools, data, designs, successes, and ideas. Turn them into action.

Together you can:Bridge the gap between poor and rich communities.

Spectacularly reduce your carbon footprint.Make nature part of daily life.Empower entrepreneurship.

Re-imagine education.Nurture health.

I am the City 2.0. Dream me. Build me. Make me real.

Aloha!

On behalf of our speakers, performers, volunteers, sponsors and partners, we welcome you to TEDxHonolulu 2012. Today we join forces with TED and other TEDx event organizers around the world to launch a new annual global initiative – TEDxCity 2.0: A day of urban inspiration.

We consider it an amazing honor, a wonderful privilege, and a huge responsibility to host a licensed TEDx event on our beautiful island - one of the most isolated population centers on the planet. We may be isolated, but thanks to the incredible impact of online video and the renowned TED/TEDx platform, we are able to share Hawaii’s most fascinating thinkers, doers and performers with the world.

Your attendance today puts you front and center and part of a rapidly growing global movement. Over 4,500 TEDx events have been held in 135 countries since 2009, with over 1,300 cities hosting an annual TEDx event.

Today’s show will be professionally videotaped and photographed, so smile often! We are also streaming live over the Internet so that anyone can join us by logging in.

Video clips and photos of each presentation and performance will be available for worldwide viewing and sharing within the next 30 days. We will email you detailed information about where to find today’s content so that you can enjoy and share it with others over and over again! Please let us know your thoughts about your experience today. Thank you for being a part of this historic occasion.

Warmest regards,

TEDxHonolulu 2012 Organizing Team

After eight years of leading the Game Group and serving as the Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association, Jennifer founded Code for America, where she works with talented web professionals and cities around the country to promote public service and reboot government. She recently ran the Web 2.0 and Gov 2.0 events for TechWeb, and co-chaired the successful Web 2.0 Expo.

TED regulations require 25% of each TEDx event to consist of TED.com talks, so we will share four relevant TED.com videos with you throughout the day. We believe Jennifer’s talk is very much in line with this year’s City 2.0 theme, and couldn’t think of a better way to kickstart the event than by sharing her fantastic idea worth spreading. Enjoy!

Unplugged yet electrifying, Simple Souls is best known for their acoustic mash-up medleys of everyone’s favorite songs. They seamlessly blend contemporary with hip hop, rock n’ roll with rap, and soulful renditions that often sound better than the originals. Zaysha Labrador appears shy playing the guitar while hiding under her hat, but she continues to blow away unexpecting audiences with her unique voice at every performance. Jennifer Wright, also known as JRoq, can harmonize, rap, and hit some amazing notes

while beating the djembe at lightning-fast speeds and accuracy. Simple Souls are redefining local music!

Praised by thousands around the world for his intentions to awaken, enlighten, enrich and inspire, Timber Hawkeye prescribes gratitude as medicine for people to heal themselves from the inside out. His message invites

the best version of you to resurface, inevitably leading to the true meaning of success (being happy), and better health (mental, physical, emotional and spiritual). In an ongoing effort to eradicate society’s ever-growing sense of entitlement, which he considers nothing short of an epidemic, and replace it with a sense of appreciation for each breath we are given, Timber shares mindfulness-enhancing techniques that anyone can relate to and implement in their daily lives.

When singer/songwriter Mailani first stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist, in addition to winning our hearts with her vocal stylings, she also won another Na Hoku Hanohano award, which she received in the past as a member of the popular duo Keahiwai. With two solo albums that beautifully represent innovative and respectful interpretations of Hawaiian standards, as well as several original compositions in both Hawaiian and English, Mailani blends the contemporary and the traditional in ways that delight aficionados of both genres. She is a University of Hawaii graduate with a degree in Hawaiian studies, and she’s as passionate about the islands as she is about her music.

We are losing the war against obesity in the US. Our kids are growing up overweight and malnourished from a diet of processed foods, and today’s children will be the first generation ever to live shorter lives than their parents. It’s

time for change. It’s time for a Food Revolution.

The problem stems from the loss of cooking skills at home and the availability of processed foods at every turn, from the school cafeteria to church function halls, factories and offices. This Food Revolution is about saving lives by inspiring everyone: moms, dads, kids, teens and cafeteria workers to get back to basics and start cooking good food from scratch.

TED awarded Jamie Oliver the granting of “One Wish to Change the World,” and Jamie’s wish was “To create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again, and empower people

everywhere to fight obesity.”

Visit jamieoliver.com for more information and to find out how you can be part of the Food Revolution.

Sharing powerful stories from his anti-obesity project, TED Prize Winner Jamie Oliver makes the case for an all-out assault on our ignorance of food. He is one of the world’s best loved television personalities, transforming the way we feed ourselves and our children. Everything the Better Food Foundation does is about improving lives through better education and understanding of food, where it comes from, and how it affects our bodies. Jamie’s aim is to give everyone the tools, skills and knowledge to make a lasting, positive impact on their lives. He has published many books and even smartphone apps to help us make better decisions about what we put in our bodies.

It has become impossible to have a conversation about food these days without Jamie Oliver’s award-winning TEDTalk coming up. His ideas worth spreading are certainly food for thought... pun intended.

Lucie is an actress and professional singer/songwriter influenced by Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Jewel, Eva Cassedy, Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. She uses her voice as her primary instrument, with her travel-guitar “Martin” strumming along wherever her song may take us. It’s not uncommon for Lucie to visibly shift as the music starts to channel spontaneous lyrics, sweeping the audience to arrive together with a collective exhale at a new destination. Kent Larson’s projects through the MIT House_n research consortium in the School of Architecture and Planning, and MIT Media Lab’s Changing Places Group, are dedicated to developing technologies that solve contemporary issues in the home, the workplace, and the city. Kent practiced architecture in New York City for 15 years, and wrote several architectural publications for the New York Times. His current work has three focuses: responsible urban housing, ubiquitous technologies, and living lab experiments to test his group’s designs in practical environments.

With the growing population on our small island, we thought Kent Larson’s question rather fitting: “How can we fit more people into cities without overcrowding?” With designs like the quick-change apartments and other innovations, can future cities really work like the small villages of the past?

With over 30 years of hiking and outdoor recreation experience, Aaron Lowe has been managing all 100 miles of forestry trails on Oahu since 1995. This includes administration and maintenance, from chain sawing

large fallen trees with prison inmates, to authorizing a trailside permit for major film productions like “The Hunger Games.” Aaron believes that human respect for nature can start with a simple hiking trail, and wants to implement creative ways for people to enjoy, learn and respect nature. To that end, he is working on developing a sculpture trail, and uses modern forms of technology to expand his interpretive sign program.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. There are two annual TED conferences (one in Long Beach, California, and another Edinburgh, Scotland), where the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers are challenged to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED.com makes the best of those talks and performances available to the world for free through TED.com, standing by their mission to spread ideas. Today, TED is best thought of as a global community welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.

The TEDx program gives communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. TEDx events are independently planned and coordinated in the spirit of TED’s “ideas worth spreading”. A combination of live presenters and TEDTalk videos at TEDx events sparks deep conversations and connections.

Today’s TEDx event is operated under license from TED. As an official TEDx licensee, we are entrusted with helping create and spread TEDTalks across the globe! We consider it an amazing honor, a wonderful privilege, and a huge responsibility to organize and host a TEDx event.

TEDxHonolulu is a volunteer organization of passionate and committed TEDsters and thought leaders. We are educators, activists, artists, inventors, scientists, philosophers, musicians, students, environmentalists, and more. We love TED, we love TEDx, and we love Hawaii!

INSIDE OUTINSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work.

The 2011 Street Artist and TED Prize winner JR announced his wish to turn the world “Inside Out”. He invited people around the globe to share a photo portrait of themselves along with a statement about what they stand

for, and that’s when local photographer Rodel Casio, pictured above, organized the Honolulu Inside Out Project, and dubbed it “The ‘Ohana Bunch”. Regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion or geographical region, we are ‘ohana.

A small selection of the images from the project are shared with you outside on the Aulani lawn today. Together with hundreds of other images we simply didn’t have room to display, they will be plastered on the side of an abandoned building or construction site, the location of which has not been determined yet.

Rodel Casio conveys his extensive background in portrait photography by capturing the essence of what makes each of us unique yet beautifully human at the same time. He successfully creates captivating images by delicately balancing light, shadows, depth and intuitive timing.

In 2010, after years of developing and expressing his creative talent with Fashion Photography and Graphic Design on Maui, Rodel changed directions (and locations), to simplify the glamour of a shot in order to express the core of what got him interested in photography in the first place: the subtleties that make us appear different even though we are all the same. You can see his work for yourself by visiting rodelcasio.com

Now on Oahu, Rodel was inspired to participate in the Inside Out Project, and demonstrate our community’s commitment to stand united. Unique. Beautiful. Simple.
