NEW WAYS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

The existing educational models are not satisfying the demands of our contemporary society. Moreover, while some have access to a high-

quality education, some are still suffering with the lack of basic resources to learn, such as a decent classroom. This creates a

concerning gap, which is widening with time. Thus, in August 2015 we applied for a TEDx event license, to enable

the spread of ideas that could improve the current state of our educational systems.

On the 5th of March 2016 the TEDxPraçaSantosAndradeED gathered 10 speakers from different backgrounds to share with

Curitiba and the world their ideas about how the future of education should be. They advocated for a more inclusive, customized and

innovative education.

This report contains a summary of the impact created by the event.

ABOUT The TEDxPraçaSantosAndradeED was held at Capela Santa Maria, one of the most beautiful concert halls of the city of Curitiba, on the 5th of March 2016, from 2 pm to 10 pm. There were 10 talks, with maximum length of 18 minutes each, separated by breaks, which allowed the attendees to interact among them and with sponsors. The Net Promoter Score of the event was 9.6.

The Santos Andrade Square names the event for its position as a cultural and educational landmark of the city of Curitiba. It is home of the historical building of the first university in Brazil, of one of the biggest theaters of Latin America and many other cultural venues. Besides, it is also a meeting point during public protests, reminding everyone of the power of collaboration.

Since we decided not to charge for attendance on the event, and seats were limited, we created an application process. The organizing team screened applications selecting potential attendees based on four questions: is the candidate engaged with Education? Is she really interested in participating on this TEDx event? What is the candidate’s background? Will the candidate be able to disseminating the ideas presented by the speakers?

Based on those questions we selected 85 people to attend to our event, plus 15 people that were invited for their leading roles in the educational sector. The event was also broadcasted by our website, by the website of the main television channel of our state and by three independent viewing parties.

SPEAKERSCurating speakers is the most strategic activity of a TEDx event. Our role was to find ideas worth

spreading and prepare speakers to deliver their messages in a clear and strong way, according to the TED format. We chose 10 people from a pool of 200 potential speakers, according to our theme (new ways of teaching and learning). We prioritized local ideas, but also invited speakers from other parts of Brazil and the World, to emulate the exchange of perspectives. We also took diversity into

account: differences of gender, age, economic background and others were fundamental to create a line up that truly reflected the complex world that we live in.

We articulated entrepreneurs, professors, students, the public sector and big educational groups for promoting new ways of teaching and learning.

Strengthening of TEDx-like events in Curitiba There was an increase of 150% in the number of livestream views and 120% in the number of Fan Page likes from the previous TEDx event made in Curitiba.

Page 16: TEDx PraçaSantosAndrade Report

Our current educational system is ruled by a mindset that emphasizes the transmission of information to prepare students for standardized tests. Based on his experience at "A Grande Escola", Ricardo Dória proposes a shift for a "transformation focused" mindset, on which every student would be able to answer how a given learning experience was able to change her life.

Aruni van Amstel invests most of his time outside clasroom investigating issues that interest him, from which he learns a lot, but that are not directly associated with the content taught in school. These interests and his curiosity to understand them were a product of remarkable experiences that Aruni had. Based on that, he asks: if you don't have remarkable experiences in school, how can things that we study in classroom be interesting?

Brazil already has everything it needs to be a great country - it only needs self-esteem to follow its own models. By sharing a little bit of his wisdom, José Pacheco reminds us of the three essential aspects for the construction of learning: autonomy, responsibility and solidarity.

In a straightforward talk, Rosely Sayão presents a series of conflicts that appear on the school and parents relationship in Brazil and suggests alternative ways to create a fairer, more respectful and more democratic relationship.

What if we became researchers in our daily routines and we start to collect data about our experiences? And what if we could download other people's experiences as well? In this ingenious talk, Jessica Artiles invites us to use big data to understand better how we work and to improve our learning systems as a whole.

Using as an example his professional and personal experiences, Alexandre Amorim tell us how education can help us on the achievement of our dreams. For him, it is essential that we have freedom to choose what we want, that we use creativity to find the best alternatives to implement something and we should have people around us who believe on our projects. Then, Alexandre instigates the audience to imagine a society where everyone would do something like that to others.

Kauanna Batista started to gather people and resources to improve the life conditions of people around her from an invitation that she received when she was only 16. Based on that, she makes us reflect about our attitudes towards the invitations we receive and about the invitations that we are offering to the world.

Inspired by his own life history, Fernando Botelho questions the obstacles that we use to say that prevent the inclusion of people with disabilities and he proposes a simple and practical solution to include these people in our society.

Luana Lobo found on Filmmaking a fun and quick way to reach a huge number of people and inspire changes in the world. In a passionate talk, she shares some parts of her journey, including the challenges of distributing the films she produced and the creation of VIDEOCAMP, a free and online platform that connects transforming films and audiences willing to change the world.

Together with a group of friends and with their passion for drums and music, Rogê Du Cerrado created a big celebration that later became a social movement. In this straightforward talk, he tells us a little bit more about his journey and urges us to embrace our ancestral cultures in order to improve our learning experiences.

ABOUT TED TED - Technology, Entertainment, Design - invites the world’s leading thinkers and

doers to present their latest “Ideas Worth Spreading”. First held in 1984 as an annual event in California, TED was acquired from its founder, Richard Saul Wurman, in

2001 by Chris Anderson’s Sapling Foundation and developed into a multi-media/experience platform. Past speakers include Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Ray Kurzweil,

Paola Antonelli, Frank Gehry, Sheryl Sandberg, Gordon Brown, Dan Ariely, and Bono.

In the spirit of “Ideas Worth Spreading”, TED created the TEDx platform - where x = independently organized TED event - empowering people around the world to

organize their own events and unite their communities in a TED-like experience, under TED’s guidance. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine

to spark deep discussion and connection among the local community. For more information, please visit www.ted.com.
