Welcome back!

For the first few weeks of Term One the P-2 classroom will be learning lots of routines, school and class-room expectations, and getting to know one another. Students learning sight words will have come home with their new sight word folder already, with their words inside. Wednesday mornings, before school, Miss Ward will be downstairs testing sight words so please make sure your student brings their folder. Thank you so much to those parents who have sent their students along with water bottles, it has already saved us so much learning time. I have also asked the class to come upstairs, before the bell, to check that their pencils are sharp-ened and other supplies are ready to go. If you could remind your student at drop off to do this it would be appreciated.

Homework started this week, with instructions included for each grade.

If you have any queries or concerns please email me ([email protected]) to make a meeting time or call the school.

I’m looking forward to a great term!

Students in the Year 3-6 class have settled back into school routines with ease. It was great to see so many smiling faces in the classroom on our first days back this year! After a short time easing back into learning and shaking the cob webs off , we are back into the full swing of learning.

Students are well into their lessons for English. All students will be learning about poetry this term, the Year 3 and 4 students have begun the term by learning about persuasion. Parents beware...the students are honing their skills of effective persuasion and may be coming home to try their skills on you very soon!

Mathematics lessons are also well underway. This year the students are grouped into three groups, Year 3, Year 4/5 and Year 6 for our maths rotations. The students work on their mental maths during this time as well which is fantastic independent practise of a range of maths concepts on a regular basis.

Genius Hour is taking place again this year and the students are VERY excited to be leading their own learning in this session. There may be some requirements for parents to send along items for their chil-dren to complete their Genius Hour projects (cooking, material, etc) if we don’t have the requirements at school. The students will present their projects at the end of the term.

Mrs Penfold is teaching the class on Thursdays again this year, while I am in the office. On Thursdays the students will be participating in Science and PE lessons, English and for the Year 5/6 students, LOTE.

Fridays will see the students working on STEM/Problem Solving activities, English, Dance and Algorithms.

Homework has started again. It will be running the same as previous years, homework will need to be returned on Fridays and if the students meet the class agreed criteria they will get to roll on the Homeworkopoly Board. Please remember that students need to read for at least 20 minutes each night.

If parents have any questions or concerns please come and see me, email or call.

Prep—year 2 news

Year 3—6 news

Same day absence notification Please remember it is Departmental Policy that your child’s school MUST be notified of their ab-sence the same day of the absence. This can be by calling the school and leaving a message with a reason for the child ’s absence or emailing Karina ([email protected]) or your child’s teacher. If we do not receive notification we will contact you for a valid reason.

Archery: This term the school will welcome back Andrew Postma from Arrows Across Australia, to conduct Archery Coach-ing with the Prep to Yr 6 students over 2 days. He visited the school in 2016 to deliver his coaching, and was thor-oughly enjoyed by all students. We look forward to learning more Archery skills from Andrew when he visits again.

P & C News

AGM Tuesday, 13th February 2018

Please consider if this might be the right time to take up a position on our wonderful P&C - the AGM will come up fast.

Managing Excessive Heat in schools

If any P&C Members have something to add to the agenda for the meeting, please email the Secretary, Natalie Slack or Wendy Henning.

A reminder was released by the department last week as to how we can best manage the high temperatures at school. The following information has been taken from the education website. Unless the Principal or Regional Director determines that the school must temporarily close due to a disaster or emergency situation, Queensland state schools remain open and students are not sent home during periods of excessive heat or heat wave conditions. Heatwave conditions are specifically when excessively high temperatures combine with high humidity levels and are sustained over a number of days. That means, although the predicted maximum temperature for a region may be in the mid-to-high 30s, unless this coincides with high humidity and lasts for a few days, it is considered 'hot' rather than a 'heat wave'. Strategies for managing schools during excessive heat or heat wave conditions:

modify normal school activities during excessive heat

postpone any outdoor or sporting activities where appropriate

increase access to the coolest areas of the school grounds or facilities for lessons or other activities

ensure school lunch boxes are stored in cool areas facilitate and encourage students to drink plenty of water and to stay out of the sun.
