Boutique Thanks, Boutique Signs & Kitchen Update

THANK YOU to all the adults and youth who helped with the Boutique! With all of us working together, the work was fun and went well. Money raised from this year’s Boutique will go toward the ongoing renovation of the downstairs kitchen.*

NOTE: If you have Boutique signs, please return them to the Church Office by Sunday, October 13.

*This year we completed Phase 2 of the downstairs kitchen renovation. This was the biggest Phase of the multi-year project. The renovations we completed this year were not in our budget. The Boutique money raised helped but did not even come close to covering the $68,000 for Phase 2. Individual donations toward Phase 2 of the kitchen project would be greatly appreciated! Your check payable to St. Luke should be marked “Kitchen Project” on the memo line.

All-St. Luke Bingo Potluck Night Oct. 6

On Sunday, October 6 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., we will meet in the Great Room. Hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be provided. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish, salad, or sweet to share. Bingo games will be played and prizes awarded!

NOTE: RSVP’s are needed!!!

If you plan to attend, please RSVP so we know how much food to have on hand. RSVP to Sarah at [email protected] or 402-333-6886 ext. 313.

Child care for children under the age of 4 is available by RSVP only. If you need child care, please RSVP by October 1.

St. Luke Youth & Family Night at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch October 16

All St. Luke youth (Jr. & Sr. High), Mission Kids, and families are invited to join us for a fun evening at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday evening, October 16. Vala’s is a fun, family-oriented event for teens and children—we hope you will join us!

Siblings of youth are welcome if attended by a parent. Cost is $10 per person (payable when you arrive on the 16th).

We have a max of 20 people that we can transport from St. Luke, and those 20 spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are riding with us from St. Luke, meet at St. Luke at 4:45 p.m. (we will return to St. Luke at 9:00 p.m.). If you are meeting us at Vala’s, meet us at 5:30 p.m.

Traditionally St. Luke has been cooler by mid-October so remember to dress appropriately.

We will have someone outside Vala’s entrance with the tickets—everyone should go there first to get and pay for a ticket, then go to our designated Pit Site #26. (If you bought your ticket in advance please still check in with our ticket person so they can direct you to the pit site.)

RSVP required by Sunday, October 13, to Chris at 402-333-6886 ext. 318 or [email protected]. When you RSVP, be sure to indicate whether you will meet the group at Vala’s, or whether you need a ride from St. Luke. (Or you can sign up on the sheet at the back of the Great Room.)

We also need volunteers to help bring food for the evening. Please go to this Sign Up Genius link to sign up to bring food:

Supper Club Sign-Up by October 4

St. Luke’s Supper Club is a fun way to get to know other St. Luke people in a casual setting. Everyone who signs up will be put in groups of six. Your group will commit to have three meals with each other between October 14 and the end of March. Each couple or pair of individuals is encouraged to host a meal in their home (for pairs, just choose one home). When you are the host, you provide the whole meal. If scheduling is too complicated or your home does not accommodate guests, you can meet at a restaurant and the hosting pair buys the first round of drinks and appetizers.

THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION IN GOURMET COOKING OR IMMACULATE HOUSE CLEANING! The goal of these groups is to have a relaxed time of conversation. You can do anything from salmon on the grill to pork and beans and hot dogs, take-out lasagna, or soup. Every meal should be fun and not meant to stress out the hosts.

Each meal should last around 2 hours. This is not an evening of food and entertainment. It is a time of fellowship and conversation with food.

Couples will be kept together, but participants do not need to be part of a couple. (So groups could be three couples or a combination of couples and individuals.)

To sign up by October 4: Email your name(s), email addresses, and phone numbers to Nancy Joekel at [email protected], or to Kelley Patton at [email protected]

For all who sign up, we will all have a kick-off potluck together on Sunday, October 13 at 5:30 p.m. For the potluck, everyone is asked to bring BOTH a main dish and side dish (last names A-L bring salad or vegetable, last names M-Z bring dessert). We will meet in the Great Room—use the west bell tower doors. At the potluck, the groups will be announced and it will be the responsibility of the group members to schedule their meals.

Coffee Set-Up (Fridays or Saturdays) We need 1-2 volunteers who can come 1-2 times a month, on Friday or Saturday, to get all of the coffee (and related items) set up and ready for Sunday worship.

Greeters (Sunday Mornings) The greeter is the first smile and hello that each person sees as they enter and excels at making St. Luke a welcoming place for our guests and members. You will just work one Sunday a month and one fifth Sunday during the year at the worship service you normally attend (9:00 or 10:30). When you are scheduled, you will receive a reminder postcard in the mail.

Coffee Hosts (Sunday Mornings) Clean up the coffee and donut areas after your worship service. After the 9:00 service volunteers clean up tables around the coffee and donuts, combine donut boxes and throw away empty boxes. After the 10:30 service volunteers empty the coffee pots and rinse them out, combine donut boxes and throw away empty boxes, and wipe down counters and tables. The number of volunteers will determine how often you would be scheduled to serve. When you are scheduled, you will receive a reminder postcard in the mail.

Ushers (Sunday Mornings) We need additional men, women and youth willing to serve on one of our usher teams. Ushers serve at the 10:30 service and typically are scheduled every other week and for holiday

services. This is a job where you get to be one of the smiling faces that people see when entering the sanctuary for worship on Sunday mornings, which is important in making everyone feel welcome. We can also use usher substitutes, so if you don’t think you can do it every other week, you can be one of our subs “on call” on Sundays when one of the regular ushers cannot be there.

Audio-Visual Volunteers (Sunday Mornings) Work in the audio-visual booth one Sunday month at the service you attend. You will work alongside Brian to run the slides and the sound so that we have more than one person trained to run the equipment. When you are scheduled, you will receive a reminder postcard in the mail.

Provide Wednesday Night Suppers Every Wednesday night, supper is provided for the youth from 6:30-7:00 p.m. before they break up into their youth groups. Please consider providing a Wednesday night supper for our youth 1-2 times this school year. On Wednesdays food needs to arrive by 6:00 p.m. so it is ready to serve at 6:30. Typically we plan to feed about 25 youth. Easier meals are welcome and volunteers may pair up with someone else so that you can work together to provide a supper for a Wednesday night.

St. Luke Office We would love to have several volunteers who are willing to work in the office on a regular basis (once a month, once a week, etc.) to help with a variety of office tasks. We can work around your schedule, as long as it is Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

St. Luke Committees We need to find several more individuals for existing committees/teams (Finance Committee, Trustees, Children & Youth Ministry Team, Missions Team and Reconciling Ministries Team) and to help spearhead new ministries/team (fellowship activities, men’s group, women’s group, post high school group, senior adult ministry, hospitality, or any other specialty group).

St. Luke programs are growing! This is a good thing

but it means we need more people volunteering to

serve, so that we are making St. Luke welcoming and

hospitable to everyone who attends and/or visits.

Below are the areas where we currently need more

volunteers. If you are interested or want more

information, contact the Church Office at

[email protected]

“Love & Logic” Parenting Workshop Oct. 19

Saturday, October 19, 2019 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. St. Luke Great Room

Cost & registration info listed below

St. Luke CDC and St. Luke Family Ministries are coming together to host a Love and Logic workshop at St. Luke. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, child care worker or teacher, there will be something for everyone to learn. We would love to have you come join us!!

There is no one parenting style guaranteed to help you bring up healthy and happy children; however, “Parenting With Love & Logic” is a parenting method that is considered to be effective in raising happy, healthy and smart kids.

Parenting With Love & Logic is a parenting style where parents learn to control their emotions when disciplining their children or youth. In this parenting style, parents use love and empathy to teach consequences, establish boundaries, build healthy parent-child relationships and love kids unconditionally for who they are and not for what they have achieved.

This parenting style also tends to reduce the number of power struggles and increase positive interactions—it makes it possible for you to raise children who are self-confident, motivated and ready for the real world; allows children to learn to solve their own problems while gaining the confidence they need to face life’s challenges; benefits parents since they learn to establish healthy control without resorting to anger, nagging, threats, or exhausting power struggles; and parents learn to control their emotions which can be helpful when they are faced with a difficult situation at home or even in the workplace.

We are excited to offer this workshop, which will be presented by Karen Gustafson, a certified Love & Logic facilitator.

The workshop is open to everyone, whether or not they are part of St. Luke. The workshop will be held in St. Luke’s Great Room (please use only the west bell tower doors).

To register

Cost is $20 per person or $25 per couple. To register, make your check payable to St. Luke and write “Parenting Class” on the memo line. Mail or bring your check to St. Luke, 11810 Burke Street, Omaha, NE 68154.

Child care will be available for October 19 upon request. If you will need child care, please let us know when you register. Just include a note showing the names and ages of your child(ren) who will need child care during the workshop.

For more information, contact [email protected] or [email protected] or go to the link below:

All-Church Fall Clean-Up Day Oct. 26

Show your pride in your church and come help us spruce up the St. Luke property before winter. We want our building and property to be well cared for and inviting from the outside. Our Fall Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 from 8:00-11:00 a.m.

There are activities for all, including raking leaves, trimming trees and bushes, tearing out two flower beds (south side) and cleaning out flower beds. Bring your favorite hand and yard tools, including work gloves.

Child care will be provided so that parents can help with Fall Clean-Up Day. If you will need child care, please RSVP by Monday, October 21, to [email protected]

NOTE: If it rains on October 26, we will have the Clean-Up Day for a Saturday in November.

Sunday Morning Coffee & Donut Sponsors Needed

Coffee and donuts are an every Sunday tradition at St. Luke. They are a sign of hospitality to our guests and are the impetus for many friendly conversations. Over the years the offering taken for coffee and donuts has never covered the cost. So we are recruiting 52 families or individuals who will sponsor a Sunday’s worth of coffee and donuts.

Your gift of $150 buys the coffee, donuts, cups, napkins, etc. used on one Sunday morning.

For those who sponsor a Sunday, we will thank you on the Sunday that you sponsor and your gift can be in honor or memory of someone or of a special occasion. And your gift will be tax-deductible.

If you are willing to help, your check, made payable to St. Luke, should be marked “Sunday Donut Host” and should include a note with the following information: 1) Whether you want us to just acknowledge you by name, or if you want it to be in honor or memory of someone or of a special occasion. 2) Preferred date you would like to host between November 3, 2019, and November 30, 2020.

Once we receive your payment, then we will put you on the schedule! Dates are available first-come first-served, based on when payment is received.

===============

NOTE: On Sundays, we continue to put out the basket for monetary donations. All money in the basket is given to support Together, Inc. (or on occasion a specific St. Luke ministry). For those who enjoy the coffee and donuts, we invite you to make a donation to the basket, which will help support worthwhile ministries.

Bring Your Mug to Church...Help the

Environment and the Church Budget!

You can help the environment by bringing your own mug to church with you every Sunday. Using your own mug means one fewer Styrofoam cup that will go to the landfill. Even small choices like this can accumulate and make a big impact. A bonus: It also means St. Luke has to buy fewer cups, which will help the St. Luke budget!

We do not have room to store everyone’s mugs, so our intent is that you will bring your mug each time and take it home each time.

Disclaimer: Our coffee and donut area remains a “judgment free zone,” regardless of what you choose to eat and drink or whether you bring your own mug.

Last Chance to Submit Info for Veteran’s Day Presentation (Needed by Oct. 15)

Roger Penzotti is in the process of collecting information and pictures for a Veteran’s Day presentation at St. Luke this fall. If you are a veteran or the family member of a veteran, please contact Roger by October 15. If you are a family member or friend of a veteran who has passed away and would like them remembered, please also get their information to Roger by October 15. You can send information to Roger at [email protected] or [email protected]

If you provided information last year, we will use it again this year. If you have any additions or changes to what you submitted last year, please let Roger know.

This is for any veteran you wish to remember. Honorees do not need to be (or have been) a member of St. Luke.

“Trunk or Treat” on Halloween, Oct. 31!

One way St. Luke reaches out to our community and let them know we are here is our Trunk or Treat on Halloween (Thursday, October 31) in St. Luke’s lower parking lot.

We will have yard signs on our property announcing the event, the grill fired up so we can serve hot dogs, and a big pot of chili to go with it. All we need are a whole lot of trunks open with candy to hand out to kids as they come through. It’s really a lot of fun and want to make this a BIG event.

So you are invited to come with a trunk full of candy!!! Feel free to dress in costume and/or decorate your trunk. If you are unsure about doing this, try teaming up with someone. (Need more ideas? Just google “Trunk or Treat” images.)

We can also use volunteers for making and serving the food.

Please plan to join us on Halloween evening, Thursday, October 31 starting at 5:30 (till about 7:30).

It would be helpful to know who is coming. For details or to volunteer, contact the Church Office at [email protected]

Nov. 15

“Exodus: Resettlement in Omaha” Friday, November 15, 2019

7:00 p.m. in St. Luke’s Great Room

Details for purchasing tickets listed below

The In[HEIR]itance Project is a collaborative group who comes into cities with the stated purpose of having authentic conversations and to draw from the wisdom of all of our inherited texts. They work with local individuals to perform a story that is written specifically for that city.

Each performance tells a different story and tells it in a unique way. This is a rare opportunity to see and hear a story that has arisen out of the fabric of the refugee communities in Omaha—based on the book of “Exodus,” the Omaha performance will be titled “Exodus: Resettlement in Omaha.”

St. Luke is happy to be part of the In[HEIR]itance Project this fall!

All individuals are welcome to this performance. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Refugee Artist Fund. There is a limited number of tickets available for the St. Luke performance. Tickets can be purchased ONLY at the link below—tickets are NOT available from the Church Office.

Ticket link:

https://exodusresettlement.bpt.me/

Although the performances are family-friendly, they are probably best understood by children who are middle school or older.

For more information, check out the following web site:

St. Luke Cookbooks Now for Sale

The St. Luke cookbooks have arrived and are available for purchase. Cost is $10 each. Each spiral bound cookbook contains 300 recipes, including quick and easy appetizers, refreshing beverages, family favorites and plenty of sweet treats.

Cookbooks will be available between worship services on Sunday mornings. Your check should be made payable to St. Luke and marked “Cookbooks” on the memo line. These cookbooks would make great gifts, so plan to buy several copies.

Children to Sing in Both Worship Services Oct. 27

On Sunday, Oct. 27, the children of St. Luke will be singing for us in both worship services. In the 9:00 service, the children will sing during the children’s sermon time. Parents, if you do not usually attend at 10:30, we encourage you to come and sit in the back of the service until after the children have sung, and then you may leave (the children will sing early in the 10:30 service). We look forward to having the children share their music with us!

Chris’s Corner... The secret decoder ring ….Now that Youth Sunday School, Confirmation and Youth Groups have kicked off, you might hear our young people (Gen Z, the genera-tion born between 1996-2010) around church using terms/lingo like some of these below. If you have always wanted to know some of the definitions or even just have a mild curiosity…here ya go. (insert dramatic music) Behold…The.Secret.De-coder.Ring…... You’re welcome!

Basic: If someone is regular, boring or does typical things, they are “basic.” Bop/Banger: If a song is really good or enjoyable, it's a “bop” or a “banger.” Cancelled: If someone does something the internet deems “problematic,” they are “cancelled.” Clout: In social media context, “clout” means having a great social influence or following, being popular or being favored in certain situations. Doggo/Pupper: A Millennial/Gen Z way of saying “dog” and “puppy.” Drip: An outfit; usually refers to a really good one. For example, if you saw an outfit you really like, you'd say “drip.” Drip also refers to being “dripped” in

expensive jewelry and diamonds. G.O.A.T. Greatest Of All Time. For example: “Quart back Tom Brady maybe the GOAT.” Ghosting: Ignoring someone or not replying to their texts, usually after a period of texting, seeing or talking to them consistently. Someone usually ghosts

you if they are not, or no longer are, interested in you. Hella: Many, lots of. For example: “Did you see Nike sent him some free stuffs?” “Yeah, he's got hella clout.” Hype: Making a big deal about something, “hype it up.” Lit: When something is amazing, cool or fun, it's “lit.” Salty: Jealous. So done: Used to express being over something. Also what they say after a good laugh or seeing something so ridiculous, it's funny. Trolling: Refers to someone who is joking about something, specifically trying to press your buttons to which they say, “I'm just trolling.” Woke: Being socially and politically aware; someone who speaks up for social justice and educates themselves on important topics. Someone who chooses

to not be ignorant.
