ohan Perry. 19 years old. An upper sixth form student at St. George’s College.

At this relatively young age, Rohan is extremely successful in the field of ce-lebrity publicity and bookings. His company, Rohan Perry Publicity and Book-ings, was launched in January 2009 and has enabled him to represent celeb-rities such as Raine Seville and Hitmaker. At the moment, he is promoting Sweet Escape – a party dubbed as the kickoff to summer 2011 – which will take place on June 10.

Rohan has even ventured into video directing, taking charge of the new music video by Hitmaker and Karr Jess, ‘Stamina’. He has also been a member of the Youth View Awards Hype Crew for the past four years. This experience has given him the opportunity to meet many people in the entertainment busi-ness, helping to kick-start his career. He is in complete control of the public images of the celebrities he represents and is in constant contact with them.

Rohan says it isn’t very difficult to balance work with school since he loves what he does. Certainly, it gets overwhelming at times, but his genuine love for his job helps him to stay focused. He aims to remain in this field into his adult life, as he’s planning to study Marketing at the University of Technology in a few months’ time.

hristina Azan. 15 years old. A fifth form student at St. Andrew’s High School for Girls.

Christina fulfills our need for sweet treats selling bubble gum and plantain tarts and keeps our phones blinging with trendy acces-sories. In 2000, she acquired a gumball machine and strategically placed it in front of the Azan’s store in Sovereign Centre. In 2009, after learning the recipe at school, she realized that she loved making plantain tarts and now makes them for sale. Last year, she began ordering stylish cell phone accessories online to sell them to tech-savvy young Jamaicans.

Christina states that sales of the tarts and gumballs have declined in recent times, but the phone accessories continue to do well. She notes that it can be difficult to find certain phone case designs in Jamaica and, seeing the demand for them, she decided to sup-ply. She stocks unique styles and patterns, primarily for BlackBer-ries.

Christina credits most of her success to support from family members.

Enterprise

Todayby Ava Gardner

n today’s contracted economy, it is unwise to be dependent on a job as the only source of income as it is not guaranteed that all members of the labour force will be employed. Many stu-

dents will find that they aren’t immediately employed upon leaving school and will be forced to start their own busi-nesses.

Entrepreneurs are those who take the risk of starting new ventures. These enterprises can provide new goods and ser-vices or supply already existing products. Nevertheless, in order to be successful as an entrepreneur, you need to be innovative, committed, self-motivated and multi-skilled; pos-sess leadership skills; be self-confident, positive and, most of all, risk-taking.

Once you recognize that they possess such characteristics, the next step is to create a business plan. It should be a de-tailed document providing sufficient information about the business you have in mind, including a description of the company, its management structure, the product or service to be provided, analysis of the target market and a financial plan. This way, you can remain focused and possibly attract the assistance of external parties. It is important that you get all the help you can.

After being equipped with a business plan and entrepreneur-ial ability, can you tackle the next step – the challenges associ-ated with establishing a business? Challenges typically range from financing and government regulations to assessing your target market and production factors, including setting up an office or getting equipment. Therefore, it’s important that research be carried out on all the contributing factors to the business.

Information is your best friend and will aid you in your deci-sion making. As an entrepreneur, you will be confronted on a regular basis with many decisions and be expected to choose the best possible solutions for the sake of your business and for all parties involved.

Don’t be discouraged. Be spontaneous and take a chance. There’s a big difference between wages and the income you could possibly earn, if your business succeeds. In fact, in most cases it’s impossible to have all or even most of one’s wants and needs met with remuneration. The best type of job is the kind that makes you money while you’re out of of-fice, even asleep! Now, that’s worthwhile!

ver been a situation where you are asked if you remember someone and there’s that awkward silence as you try to recall who the hell they’re

talking ‘bout? For example, people will soon be asking, “Bounty who? The hand towel?” Well, this week, we’re going to try to remember some of those one hit wonders and washed-up has-beens, who, when we hear their names, the response is usually, “Who name suh again?”

• “Who badda, whobadda? Some seh a QQ, but me know a Dada.” Dada who? In 2005,this child was trying to get a buss off of QQ, the only musician in his age group with chart-topping songs, by dissing him. QQ is still on top of his game six years later, suh who badda, Dada? NOT YOU!

• Remember that lewd, disgusting song we all loved and got wild to when we heard it in the club, ‘Dagga Dat’ by Bragga? That has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Anyway, that particular chart-topper could not be played on airways, but it was a hot song in the club! I asked Blak Diamond from UIM Records, to which Bragga was signed, what happened to him and he said, “Him jus flop afta‘Dagga’.” No argument there.

• “John, Nikki seh yuh fi guh bed.” That intro once triggered a barrage of blank shots at every party. ‘Gyal a Run Dem Head’ placed Erup on the dancehall scene and his ap-pearance immediately took him off. He did make a comeback with ‘Click Mi Finger’, but we haven’t heard from him since, sooo… Moving on.

• Brick and Lace had two hit songs in the US and was expected to be the hottest new girl group. They made their debut with ‘Love is Wicked’ which was heard on almost every radio station. They struck gold again when they released ‘Never Never’. We never never saw them again after that. I didn’t expect them to reach far though; I mean, they were signed to Akon’s Konvict label. Please!

• Y’all remember Blacker? He was the sketels’ king, their opium. He was alleged to be with Macka Diamond (who, by the way, needs to retire) and I laugh every time I picture how their child

would look. He featured in Macka’s‘Bun Him’, for which he was ostracized by the male population and later recorded a song called ‘Tek Off Supm’ which saw women throwing their belongings , wigs an all, on the ground because its theirs.

• Y’all remember Ms. Ting? You don’t? Well, don’t feel bad be-cause I don’t either.

There are many more “artistes” we haven’t heard from in ages, so don’t worry. We’ll get to them soon

nother chapter in the historic rivalry between Kingston College (KC) and Jamaica College ( JC) will be written next week when they face off in the first quarter-final

of this year’s School’s Challenge Quiz (SCQ) on TVJ.

The schools have been bitter rivals for decades, primarily in football and athletics. KC has stamped its class in the latter, win-ning Boys Champs a whopping 31 times, while JC has estab-lished itself as a football powerhouse, claiming the Manning Cup a record 22 times. KC is also on top in SCQ with nine victories to JC’s one. JC is looking forward to changing the tide and etch-ing its name on the trophy for the second time, but KC, chasing its 10th hold, won’t make it easy.

The experienced KC team boasts two four-year veterans of the competition. This certainly makes training easier, says team coach and 2005 captain, Jeffrey Foreman. They go through rig-orous training sessions, focusing on topics given by the SCQ ad-ministrators and having match simulations. “The level of rigour to prepare for each match increases with each round. Our train-ing process will help us to play well every round we find our-selves in,” he adds confidently.

For their part, JC is not intimidated by its rival’s successful run in the competition. Although JC has had a poor run in SCQ over the years, it has been on a steady rise since being judged the most improved team in 2009, making it to last year’s quarter-finals, where they lost to Wolmer’s Boys. “We haven’t won it in 20-odd years, so this is our time. We have been putting in our work, working assiduously. We’ve been camping, the whole

nine yards. We’re not quite finished as yet,” states team captain Dominic Topey. “We try to cover all areas 100%, strategize for each match, based on the team. It’s more intense now, so we have to [restrategize] and play hard.”

The KC/JC rivalry is legendary and Foreman acknowledges that the stakes are high for both teams. “JC has proven to be a formidable team so far, so tactically, [this match] is paramount. The history means there is more at stake than getting one point more than the other team. There is heightened anticipation to make sure you win the match. It’s just the psychology. We can’t afford to focus too much on that. When we finally meet, one has to win and one has to lose. KC is determined to be the vic-tor,” he declares.

JC is also aware of the stakes and the team is doing all it can to remove the “obstacle in the path to the trophy. If we beat them, I don’t think there would be much of a challenge after that,” Topey says. “We know that they are going to come at us hard and we are training hard as well. We’re going to go hard. Either you go hard or go home.”

dwin Allen, touted for title honours at the National Boys and Girls Championships in two weeks’ time, drew nil on the girls’ side for the second year in a row while Jamaica

College ( JC) dominated the boys’ section at Saturday’s 35th Gibson Relays held at the National Stadium.

Edwin Allen werefavourites for the girls’ Class Four (Under-14) 4x100m and 4x800m open, but got disqualified in the former event and, without top girl Ristananna Tracey, could not match Holmwood in the latter.

In the meantime, Holmwood and Vere shared the spoils with two events apiece. Holmwood won the Class One (Under-20) 4x100m in 45.72 ahead of Edwin Allen 45.98 and Class Three (Under-16) in a record 45.77, again ahead of Edwin Allen 46.35. Holmwood’s 4x800m victory in 8:52.33, was also achieved ahead of Edwin Allen in 8:59.26.

Vere took top honours in the Class Two girls’ 4x100m (Under-18), winning in 45.64 ahead of Holmwood 46.58 and the 4x400m in 3:36.32 ahead of Edwin Allen 3:37.33.

Herbert Morrison girls took the 4x200m Open event in 1:39.45, making up for their mishap in the 4x100m Class One when their anchor girl Seidatha Palmer fell.

On the boys side, apart from St. Elizabeth Technical’s and Munro College’s victories in the 4x100m Class One (Under-20) in 40.37 and 3:12.77, Jamaica College ( JC) won almost all the sprint relays. In the 4x100m, JC took the Class Two (Under-17) in 41.43, Class Three (Under-15) in a record 43.38 and Class Four (Under-13) in 45.56.

Later, in the 4x200m events, only Herbert Morrison with a 1:26.07 victory in Class One and Kingston College (KC) with a rare Class Four victory in 1:36.51 – and in the absence of JC –managed to stop a clean sweep as JC took the Class Two eventin 1:28.34 and Class Three in 1:32.01. JC also added the 4x800m open in style, winning in 7:42.61.

Several visiting teams from England and the Caribbean also took part, but only the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla girls’ 4x200m in

the junior high school section came away with a relay victory, win-ning in 1:46.41.

National junior high jump record holder, Kimberly Williamson, who has been the target of several colleges since her 1.88m leap, logged the only Edwin Allen victory of the day when she cleared 1.80 me¬tres.
