Message From Th e Editor

aS thE Earth thaWS anD GrEEn thInGS begin to unfold, the weight of winter dribbles into gutters. With a lightening spirit we turn our thoughts to summer activities such as lawn sport, barbeques, and perhaps tending

our own garden plots.

I am especially excited to have had a hand in the spring yield at Great Plains teen Fiction. a few years ago I occupied the very same offi ce space I do now, but as marketing co-ordi-nator. I left for a time to work on my own busy teen and middle-grade writing career, but stayed in touch.

august 2008, I was welcomed back to our brick and mortar (and lovely hardwood fl oors) offi ce as associate editor. Over this winter of frozen toes and square bicycle tires (you will note from our paper choice that we are a GrEEn publisher) it has been my pleasure, and my honour, to work with three very talented authors on their off erings; each unique in voice, and genre.

Dreamfi re is the second Great Plains teen Fiction novel for nicole Luiken. her fi rst, Frost, has been garnering top-rated reviews, won the Golden Eagle reader’s choice award in alberta, and was named fi nalist for the 2009 red Maple award in Ontario. Like Frost, Dreamfi re is also a supernatural thriller, something nicole has a delicious, devious knack for. You will be charmed by the interaction between her characters while drawn into her twisted world of ancient foes to humankind, who gain power through dreams.

Th e Boy Kelsey by alfred Silver is the fi rst of a series of historical teen novels. “Th e boy henry Kelsey” as the men in Th e Company of adventurers (hBC) often referred to him, made fastidious records of his journeys for all years but one. Th is is the year the author explores through fi ction, all within the framework of fact. his detailed accounts of how to execute certain tasks, such as cooking lead musket balls for his gun, will take your breath away, but it is Kelsey’s relationships with the people he meets, and in particular, one young aboriginal woman, that captures and holds.

Wolf Summer is a second book in a series for rob Keough that began with Th e Gem Lakes—a fi nalist for the Manitoba Young reader’s Choice award. It is an adventure story that takes super-sized steps into the fantastic as 14-year-old Jake learns how to survive in a weird wilderness—it has giant-sized animals, mysterious mumbles of disappeared coal miners, and ghostly apparitions. Th e author’s word choice is visceral, and his “voice” strong. Th is is a story that will grip you from the beginning, hold you through all its bloody toil, and spit you out, satisfi ed, on the other end.

and so our garden grows.
