The next layer under both enamel and cementum is dentin(/d n t n/zubovina ), the main bulk of the tooth. Dentin is considered a hard tissue. Purpose of Teeth

• Primary teeth (/pr m r  tiːθ/mliečne zuby) maintain a space for permanent teeth

(/pûr m -n nt tiːθ/stále zuby)to come through.• To breakdown food into smaller pieces to aid in the process of digestion [d d st n,ɪˈ ʒɛ ʃə

• Personal appearance

Tooth Structure

• The anatomy of the tooth consists of root

(koreň, hidden in the gum) and crown(korunka, visible part of the tooth).

• The crown and root consists of hard and softtissue.

• The hard tissue covering the crown is called

enamel (/ -n m l/ sklovina), a hard mineralsurface, where as the root is covered by

cementum(/s -m n t m/ cement), a hardymineral surface, however, it is softercompared to enamel.

• The next layer under both enamel and

cementum is dentin(/d n t n/zubovina), themain bulk of the tooth. Dentin is considered a hard tissue.

• The next layer under dentin is the pulp tissue(/p lp/ dreň) that is housed in pulpcavity. The pulp cavity has a rich blood supply and nerve supply, which is essential formaintaining tooth health.

• The root of the tooth is embedded in bone, which is covered in tissue called

gingiva/gums(/j n j -v , j n-j -/ ďasno). The root is held in place by strands of tissuethat originated from the surrounding bone and embedded into cementum. These

strands of tissue are called periodontal ligaments(/p r - -d n tl l g -mnt/periodontálne, ďasnové väzivo).

Classification and Location of Primary Teeth and Function

• Children have 20 teeth intheir mouth- 10 teeth onboth the top and bottomjaw.

Each jaw consists of specificteeth, which are:

• incisors (/ n-s z r/rezák) (cutting teeth),

• canines (/k n n/ očnézuby) (tear ing teeth) and

• molars (/m l r/ stoličky)(grind ing teeth-

mastication  (/m s t

-k zh n/ žuvanie)).

From the midline of one sideof each jaw consists of:2 incisors, 1 canine and

2 molars.

Eruption (/ -r p sh n/prerezávanie)Patterns:

- Teeth tend to erupt in pairs.- Lower teeth usually eruptbefore the upper teeth- Girls generally preceded boys

in tooth eruption

Classification and Location of Permanent Teeth

• There are 32 permanentteeth.

• There are 16 teeth onboth the top and bottomjaw

• From the midline of oneside of each jaw consists

of 2 incisors, 1 canine,2 premolars  (/pr -m lr/ čreňové zuby)and 3 molars.

Impacted Teeth (/ m-p k t d/ retinované zuby)

• Teeth that fail to emerge of erupt through thegums are impacted teeth.

• Also known as unemerged or unerupted teeth.• Most common teeth to become impacted are 3rd

molars (wisdom teeth/zuby múdrosti) due to the

fact they are the last teeth to emerge.• Often due to a small jaw that prevents eruption

of the teeth.• Impacted teeth do not usually cause any

problems, however, they may lead tomalignment of neighbouring teeth or becomeimflammed leading to pain and bad breath.

Dental diseases

Dental decay damage your tooth's structure, starts by damaging your tooth's protectivecoating, also known as enamel, causing a hole (cavity) to develop in your tooth.

Gum disease inflammation of the gums, bones and tissues that surround and support teeth, stages:

• Gingivitis(/j n j -v t s/ zápal ďasien) inflammation of the gums

• Periodontal Disease: Periodontitis (/p r - -d n t t s/ zápal ozubnice) attacks the gum andbone around the teeth

Oral cancer any abnormal growth and spread of cells occurring in the mouth cavity includingthe Lips;Inside of the lips and cheeks; Tongue; Gums; Floor of the mouth; Salivary gland;

Tonsil; Oropharnynx (ôr -f r ngks, r -); Back of the throat; Roof of the mouth.
