Facts worth knowing
What is dust/fume?
The term of dust/fume applied in thiscontext describes the amount of dis-persed, firm particles in the air, whichare produced among other thingsduring mechanical processes such aswelding. In general you have to distin-guish between grit and fines. Fines canbe further classified into categoriesE-dust (dust which can be inhaled),A-dust (dust alveolar) and U-dust (ultrafine dust).
In general dust/fume below a particlesize of 10 m is being characterized asfines. Also welding fumes, solderingfumes and oil mist are part of thecategory fines. Since their particle sizeis smaller than 1 m they belong to thefraction of A-dust particles and requireparticular hygienic attention.
How is the dust/fume produced?
In welding engineering dust andtherewith hazardous substancesare produced by application of
base materials
filler materials
impurities
ambient air
during processes such asevaporation
condensation
oxidization
decomposition
pyrolysis
combustion
Why is dust/fume dangerous?
Generally speaking every kind of dust/fume can lead to respiratory diseases(Bronchitis, obstructive bronchitis)resulting from the inhaling of dust in ahigh concentration and during a longerperiod. Dust/fume is in par ticulardangerous if it contains hazardoussubstances.
Depending on the result of the riskevaluation, the German O rdinanceon Hazardous Substances prescribes
to realize safeguards according to aprotection class concept:
Protection class 1In case of a negligible risk, the basicmeasures according to 8 of the Ger-man Ordinance on Hazardous Sub-stances (protection class 1) must beadopted. They include for example:
Cleanliness of the workplace
No food at the workplace
Use of protective clothing
Limiting the quantity of hazardous
substances to the quantity requiredfor the activity
The protection class 1 has to befulfilled during welding at any time(cf. TRGS 500).
Protection class 2If the basic measures of the protectionclass 1 are not enough for the handlingof hazardous substances, additionalmeasures have to be adopted accord-ing to 9 of the German Ordinance onHazardous Substances:
SubstitutionReplacing hazardous substances
for substances, preparations andproducts which are less harmfulregarding health and safety
Choosing a different process, e.g.gas tungsten-arc welding instead ofMIG-welding or active-gas metal-arc welding
Evaluation of the charge (exposition)
Reduction of the charge in using a
local capturing device
Protection class 3For toxic (T) and extremely toxic (T+)substances and if the protectionclass 2 is not enough, the measures ofthe protection class 3 have to be real-ized. The following additional meas-ures are required according to 10 ofthe German Ordinance on HazardousSubstances:
Closed systems or
Access restriction
An example can be the welding ofgalvanized and coated materials.
Protection class 4For activities involving the use ofcarcinogenic, mutagenic or fertilityaffecting substances, additional safe-guards have to be realized if the limitvalues at the workplace according to 11 Ordinance on Hazardous Substances(protection class 4) are exceeded:
Separation of the danger zone
Recirculation of exhaust air only for ex-
ceptional cases (cf. german TRGS 560)Among others, the protection class 4has to be fulfilled during welding ofchromium-nickel steels .

plasma cutting and
plasma welding (plasmajet plasma arc welding)
cutting or welding ofchromium nickel steelsor aluminiummicro weldingengineering (e.g. sheetsof 0.1 mm thickness)main fields of applica-tion: container andmachine construction, pipeline constructionand aerospace industry
work carried out with plasma jet (plasma: conduc-tive gas heated by electric arc) which enables acontact-free ignition of the electric arcthe plasma jet is surrounded by a protective gascoating (e.g. a compound of argon with hydro-gen), which protects the melting from oxidation, herewith resulting in higher energy concentra-tion as during the WIG process (gas tungsten-arcwelding)higher welding speeds possible and lesser distor-tion and tension, the work piece melts and one partvaporizes because of higher temperature of the
plasma jet (up to and higher than 20 000 C)
metal dusts, consisting ofnitrogen oxide, low ozoneconcentration
oxyacetylene welding universally applicable:electronic and fineryindustry, nearly all kindsof steel
oxidation of hydrocarbons while producing heatoxyacetylene welding procedures do not needelectricity or cooling watera burner and a combustion gas bottle are sufficientfor the electronic and finery industry, in case ofhigher need of energ y in flame (e. g. manufacturingindustry) oxygen or compressed air is fed to achievethe necessary temperature and intensity of theflamethe mostly applied methods of oxyacetylenewelding are: gas welding, torch brazing, oxyg entorch cutting and flame c leaning
nitrous gases (nitrousoxide) are very importantduring the process of hea-ting and welding of steelwith gases (e.g. acetylene, propane, oxygen)fumes and dusts prevailduring oxygen cutting
spot welding fusing of up to threesteel sheetsassembly of bodyparts of automotiveengineeringfabrication of electro-technical articles
the steel sheets are being compressed at one pointby means of two opposing electrodesthe welding current is being lead into the steelsheets by means of electrodes (mostly copper andcopper alloys), which results in melting of the basematerial at the transition between the steel sheets
only few amounts ofhazardous substances arebeing produced throughthe extrusion or meltingof the base material
laser-beam cutting andlaser welding
cutting, welding, drilling, surface hardening andthermal treatment
burning of heated metal by means of oxygen, execution mostly without induction of fillermaterialdistinction between laser deep welding and heatconduction welding, both methods differentiatemainly by the beam intensity
Nd: YAG laser and the CO laser are t he mostly usedbeam sources during the laser welding processesof metaldiode lasers are applied to achieve a higherefficiency
hazardous substancesdepending on the basematerial worked uponamount of dust varies inrelation to the cuttingspeed and the pressure of

soldering steel, copper, brass, silver, gold and alu-minium (brazing)electro technology andelectronic soft-soldering
unlike the welding only liquefaction of solder(melts at low temperature), the base materialsremain in a solid stateit is differentiated between soldering(liquidus temperature < 450 C) and brazing(liquidus temperature > 450 C)
emissions depend on theleads, fluxing agents, bonding agents, the formof heat input (electricalsoldering bit or gas flame)used and the processrelated parameters suchas soldering temperature, soldering time and holdingtime

Description
Mobile cartridge filter unit BGIA-certified in combination with allTEKA suction arms for welding fumecategory W3 (certification BGIA:
200422876/1140). The separationefficiency is 99 %.
As the filter cartridge, fitted with aPTFE membrane and a big filter area,is dedustable, the unit only generatesminimal consequential costs. The filtercartridge remains in the unit duringdedusting which guarantees that nodust can reach the working space.
The unit corresponds to the securityrequirements for units of the weldingfume category W3 (high alloyed ste els).If you handle the unit correctly, youcan use it for circulating air operationbecause it fulfils the requirements forthe exceptional rules according to thenew german hazardous substancesordinance.
A stable sheet steel construction withcontinuous powder coating guaranteesa low maintenance operation evenunder rough conditions.
A baffle plate serves to pre-separategross particles. Afterwards, the filtercartridge separates the remaining dustsand fumes. The filters are dedusted ata maintenance door by means of a com-pressed air pistol on the clean air side. The particles are collected in a dustcollecting drawer and can be disposedafterwards.
The air is evacuated on the backside ofthe unit through an outlet grill and risesup. Thus, at a 1 m distance, no disturb-ing air flow is perceivable.
The unit is fitted with a high-capacityfan with high negative pressure thatguarantees a high volumetric flow evenif the filter is saturated.

48 2. Stationary and central suction and filtering systems 49
Description
Stationary cartridge filter unit for up to2 welding places that is BGIA-certifiedaccording to DIN EN 15012-1 (test certifi-cate 200820266/1140) in combination
with all TEKA suction arms and cranes.Separation efficiency is 99 %.
The unit corresponds to the securityrequirements for units of the weld-ing fume category W3 (high-alloyedsteels). If you handle the unit correctly,
you can use it for circulating air opera-tion because it fulfils the requirementsfor the exceptional rules according tothe new hazardous substances ordi-nance.
The unit is fitted with a high-capacitysteel plate fan attached onto the unitand with a consecutive cleaning whenthe fan stands still. The fan is fittedwith high negative pressure that guar-antees a high volumetric flow even ifthe filter is saturated.
A stable steel plate construction withcontinuous powder coating guaranteesa low-maintenance operation evenunder rough conditions.
The specially developed dedustingsystem guarantees an optimal suctionefficiency during operation. The advan-tage of the Power-Spray-System is not
only its low-maintenance constructionwithout abrasion susceptible rotating
jets but also the low dedusting pressurerespectively low consumption of com-pressed air. The dedusted particles arecollected in the dust collecting drawerand can be disposed afterwards.
A baffle plate made of copper servesas protection device for the filtercartridges. The fumes and dusts areseparated by the filter cartridges. Theyare precoated ex works with a specialfilter medium. This increases consider-ably the lifetime compared to st andardcartridges.
From a length of 5 m on, the suctionarms are delivered with additional wallbrackets.

50 2. Stationary and central suction and filtering systems 51
FILTERCUBE2N / 2Hcentral filter unit,EN DIN ISO 15012-1 certified
Appropriate to: Many suction tasks for several working places at the same time for jobsusing non-alloyed metals and precious metals, galvanized material and aluminium.
Description
The stationary filter units FILTERCUBE2N and 2H are certified according toDIN EN ISO 15012-1 BGIA (test certifi-cate BGIA: 200622719). The separation
efficiency is 99 %.
The unit corresponds to the securityrequirements for units of the weld-ing fume category W3 (high-alloyedsteels). If you handle the unit correctly,
you can use it for circulating air opera-tion because it fulfils the requirementsfor the exceptional rules accordingto the new hazardous substancesordinance.
The released fumes and dusts areextracted via appropriate suction ele-ments and guided into the filter unit.A baffle plate with large surface servesas pre-separator and distributes theparticles on the whole filter surface.
All filter units are fitted with hangingfilter cartridges. Thus, the admission ofthe cartridges is carried out on the side.Heavy particles fall down directly intothe dust collecting container.
The filter cartridges are precoated exworks with a special filter medium. This increases considerably the lifetimecompared to standard cartridges.
The dedusting is controlled by amicroprocessor by means of the PULSE-CONTROL via the POWER-SPRAY-System(power spray system).
The advantages of the TEKA POWER-SPRAY-System compared to jet orrotating nozzle dedusting systems
Low-wear and gentle for the car-
tridges because dedusting onlyrequires 4 bar (compared to 8 barfor rotating nozzles)No follow-up costs due to wearing
rotating nozzlesThus lower follow-up costs and higher
lifetime of the filter cartridgesOptimal distribution of the air in the
cartridge via displacement bodies(absent for jet dedusting)
Low consumption of compressed air
because no rotating nozzles are in-tegrated and the cartridge volume isreduced by the special TEKA displace-ment bodies. No rotating and wearing bearings
High security during operationExtension of the filter lifetime via
precoating them with a special filtermedium by standard
