Tekkie Tax 2014 Campaign summary

Introduction 15 National welfare organisations have joined forces under one BIG national fundraising campaign called: Tekkie Tax. Altogether we represent way over a 1 000 NGOs all over the country.

History The first Tekkie Tax campaign took place in 2013 and a whopping R2.4 million was raised. More than 180 local NGOs participated. The message was clear; everybody loved the campaign and Tekkie Tax is here to stay! After a successful audit in October, all proceeds were distributed in November 2013.

How does it work? Members of the public are asked to get a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10 donation. There are 5 different stickers, each representing a beneficiary sector. Depending on where your heart lies, you can choose which of the 5 sectors you would like to support when buying your sticker/s (and YES, you may choose more than one) Animals, Basic Family Care, Children, Disability or Education On Tekkie Tax day, you wear the big sticker on your lapel. Whatever your outfit is for the day, wear your tekkies! You can even spiff up your tekkies by getting a pair of our funky shoelaces called “Tekkie Tags” (R30 including your sticker of choice) The next Tekkie Tax day is on Friday, 30 May 2014.

What are the 5 SECTORS from which I can choose my sticker? Animals

In this sector we reach out to our furry friends, the ones that cannot fend for themselves. From domestic animals to abattoirs, wildlife and everything in between. Let's make the world a better place for animals and also "keep it green" by focusing on the environment.

Basic Family Care (St Bernard’s Hospice falls within this sector)

The welfare organisation (NGO) field in South Africa stretches across hundreds of thousands of organisations, covering numerous areas of need. This is a section for organisations that, amongst others, render various services in the poorest of the poorest communities in our country. They provide services to older persons, poverty alleviation, HIV Aids and just what the name of this sector says: Basic Family Care. Children Children have the right to a safe environment where they can grow and develop into responsible adults who contribute to society. Sadly, this is often not the case. Our beneficiaries in this sector focus on the needs of children.

Disability

People with disabilities are one of the most marginalised groups in the world. Our beneficiaries cover all kinds of disability and render services, run homes and provide education, training and job opportunities to children and adults in each and every corner of our country.

Education Education is one of the biggest challenges in South Africa – and unless we win this battle a lot of other problems will stay with us. Our beneficiaries strive to provide early childhood development as well as education to adults and children to launch them into a successful, sustainable future.

Who are the BENEFICIARIES in each sector? The fact that so many welfare organisations across a variety of service delivery fields are working together saves a lot of money and creates a fundraising platform for organisations that do not have the infrastructure to organise this kind of campaign. Our national beneficiaries are:

What do you DO on Tekkie Tax day?

Wear your stickers (one on yourself and one on your cell) as well as your tekkies with our funky shoelaces on Friday, 30 May 2014. If possible, make your tekkies WORK that day and do some

community service:

Take the dogs at a shelter for a walk.

Bring a special treat to the children that we take care of.

Spoil the people in one of our old age homes to tea and cake!

Take a bunch of carrots to the horses and donkeys we take care of.

Clean up your local park!

Take the stairs instead of the lift – save electricity and be thankful for the fact that you CAN walk up the stairs!!

WHY should you wear the Tekkie Tax sticker? To show that you have paid your “tax” and earned the right to wear your tekkies for the

day!

Show the world where your heart lies: Animals, Basic Family Care, Children, Disability or Education.

So that we know you have paid up!!

Who is behind the scenes?

The Tekkie Tax campaign is conducted under the auspice of a Charitable Trust called "The Legacy through Charity Trust” registered with the Master of the South Gauteng High Court under registration number IT 2455/2012, 116-048 NPO and PBO 930041253.

So why are we doing this? Simply having an auditor on board does unfortunately not guarantee that a fundraising campaign or any other service is run honestly. The structure of the Tekkie Tax campaign ensures that not one person, company or welfare organisation will control the campaign bank account alone, enriching itself by it - or be in a position to mismanage money to the detriment of other beneficiaries.

The Marketing Team (Pty) Ltd The Tekkie Tax campaign is run and managed by The Marketing Team (Pty) Ltd under the leadership of Annelise de Jager – she started out as a social worker and is well known for the annual "Casual Day" campaign which she has started and successfully ran for 18 years. In 2013 she was a finalist of the SA Fundraising Institute for “Fundraiser of the year” and she won the prestigious CEO award for “Most influential woman in Business and Government” in the SME section. She has now added Tekkie Tax to her repertoire. "I have seen the amazing help that Casual Day was to NGOs in the field of disability and by being involved in the Tekkie Tax campaign: I wish to give the same opportunity to welfare organisations in other sectors." The Marketing Team is an all-girl team that has walked through fire by raising more than R173 million for their chosen beneficiaries. They do not only have the heart and dedication but also a flawless record in the fundraising arena for nearly 30 years.

Trustee of The Legacy Through Charity Trust (LtC) Patricia Gumede – A well known business woman with expertise in many fields. She has established herself as a successful individual who understands the corporate world. "In my line of business it is not possible to be involved in the operational running of a welfare organisation. But I can add value to them by serving on this trust. This campaign gives me the opportunity to give something back to the community in the best way I can - and for helping not only one organisation but an entire range of them." Legal governance Turnstone Corporate Trustee SA (Pty) Ltd added their value by registering the trust and ensures that all legal requirements are met on an on-going basis. They are represented as a trustee in this campaign by Hanna Marais. "This is a fabulous project to work on. It is great for me to know that at the receiving end of this campaign, there is not an organisation which benefits but an individual, somebody with a heart and soul – and often one with a furry tail!!” Auditing firm The auditor of the campaign is Frikkie Nel from F&S Accounting & Auditing; a medium-sized auditing firm in Pretoria. His attention to detail and well trained staff ensures that he is the right man for the job. Board of advisors The purpose of the Board of Advisors is to plan, develop and execute the TT Campaign for the benefit of all parties involved. WHERE can you get a sticker and Tekkie Tag shoelaces? Directly from any of the participating welfare organisations.

Why is it called TAX? It is compulsory to participate (in this universe anyway!!)

What is a TEKKIE? The fashion people might not agree with this but our definition is “any shoe with laces”. So have a look in your cupboard, there MUST be a pair . . .?

Together we will achieve more than our individual efforts

combined The Tekkie Tax campaign is the initiative of The Marketing Team and all rights regarding the project shall remain
