Hansa Shipping, based in Hamburg, Germany, has been providing shipping and freightage, operation and com-mercial management as well as chartering and many more maritime services since 1997. In early 2015 the fleet owners took additional initiatives to further optimise operations. They assessed the powerful performance evaluation system Tekomar XPERT (since September 2015 installed in 42 of Hansa’s vessels) and also chose Tekomar CYLUBE to upgrade mechanical lubrication.

Traditional engine lubrication is prone to mistakes. Beat Güttinger explains: “Everyone is afraid of under-lubrication. As a result, everyone tends to over-lubricate.”

Diagrams, complex calculations,manual settings

And no wonder: “With conventional systems you have to look at diagrams, do calculations. You need to know the values needed to have an engine run with optimum performance. Then you manually adjust settings – in the engine room, screw by screw.”

But the reality is: “People are reluctant to change any-thing. They let the engine run ‘as is’. This really should not happen if you wish to have clean engines. It is detri-mental when you refuel and the quality of the heavy fuel oil is not as it was before. And it is definitely a no-go if you wish to achieve lube oil reductions.”Existing lubricators before installation.

Tekomar CYLUBE is 70% more cost-efficient than any other system on the market. Unlike other options it works without touching the existing lubrication system. This facilitates the installation process and leaves the original parts fully funtional, providing 100% redundancy as manual settings may still be used if ever needed.

Automatic optimisation

Tekomar CYLUBE eliminates lubrication errors by upgrad-ing the original mechanical lubricators. It acts as an elec-tronically controlled, load and cylinder lubrication oil BN and fuel oil sulphur content dependent system. The opti-mum feed rate is set via a monitor in the engine control room. Peter Mackeprang: “The control panel situated in the ECR is a very good tool for assisting the engineers in moni-toring, evaluating and adjusting the cylinder lubrication.”

UP TO 30% SAVINGSLooking back on his decision in favor of Tekomar in Febru-ary 2015, Peter Mackeprang concludes: “The cooperation was very professional and based on good understanding and communication. Tekomar supported us very well dur-ing implementation and afterwards by providing prompt feedback and assistance.”

GOING FORWARDTekomar CYLUBE works with all engines employing me-chanical lubricators. The next step, currently developed by Tekomar’s engineers, will take the system’s efficiency and ease of use another step further as Tekomar intro-duces single lubricator control (one lubricator per cylin-der), making it also a very economic upgrade options for large bore and up to 12 cylinder engines.

Beat Güttinger: “We want everything to work right away. That is why we require our clients to go through a de-tailed pre-inspection checklist. Once that is completed, we order the necessary parts. Six weeks later we are ready to roll.”

“All parts are sent directly to the ship – in one box. Instal-lation and commissioning are carried out during normal operation without any off-hire period. Initial work begins during a port call. The engine is not immobilised at any time during the installation. Further work is completed while steaming. Final adjustments and commissioning take place during the next port call, followed by a short trial run. The entire process takes no more than three days.”

“Subsequent crew training is completed within two hours supported by a comprehensive instruction manual. Any-one can manage the system though it is normally oper-ated by the second engineer.”

When the merchant Hermann Ebel and Captain Bodo Franz founded the shipping company Hansa Shipping, they started with the management of the ships “Hansa Century” and “Hansa Constitution” (each 2,810 TEU), the last two ships manufactured at the traditional shipyard “Bremer Vulkan” in 1997. Belonging to the “fleet” at that time were also the cruising yachts “Sea Cloud” and “River Cloud”. Currently Hansa Shipping manages 42 container ships with a loading capacity of 1,350 TEU to 6,500 TEU full management. In addition, 4 tankers of Aframax and Suezmax class are scheduled. The chartering is handled by the sister company Hansa Chartering. Besides modern

tankers and container ships, the highly qualified team of engineers, navigators and merchants marine of Hansa Shipping also manages the five-star cruise ships of Sea Cloud Cruises which has belonged to the Hansa Treuhand Group since 1994 and which offers individual trips at the highest level. Hansa Shipping currently has 55 employees.

Hansa Shipping has established an effective environ-mental management system and both the ships and the shore-based environmental management system have been certified by Germanischer Lloyd according to ISO14001.
