MY HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
Let me remind you my experience during an earthquake at Yogyakarta
in 2006. When the earthquake happened, I was on my car with my family. My father
was driving to grandmother’s home from our vocation in Keraton Yogyakarta.
Suddenly our car lunched to one side, to the left. I thought we got flat tire. I did not
know that it was an earthquake. I knew it was an earthquake when I saw some
telephone and electricity poles falling down to the ground, like matchsticks.

Then I saw a lot of rocks tumbling across the road. I was trapped by the rock.
Even My father could not move my car at all. There were rocks everywhere. There
was nothing we could do but left the car and walked along way to my grandmother’s
house, in the Bantul.
When I reached my grandmothers village in Bantul, I was so surprised that
there was almost nothing left. The earthquake made a lot of damage to my
grandmothers village. Although nothing was left, I thanked God that nobody was
seriously injured.

THE FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM
Islam has five primary obligations, or pillars of faith, that each Muslim must
fulfill in his or her lifetime. They are as follows:
Shahadah, profession of faith, is the first pillar of Islam. Muslims bear witness to the
oneness of God by reciting the creed "There is no God but God and Muhammad is the
Messenger of God." This simple yet profound statement expresses a Muslim's
complete acceptance of and total commitment to Islam.
Salah, prayer, is the second pillar. The Islamic faith is based on the belief that
individuals have a direct relationship with God. The world's Muslims turn
individually and collectively to Makkah, Islam's holiest city, to offer five daily
prayers at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and evening.

Zakat, almsgiving, is the third pillar. Social responsibility is considered part of one's
service to God; the obligatory act of zakat enshrines this duty. Zakat prescribes
payment of fixed proportions of a Muslim's possessions for the welfare of the entire
community and in particular for its neediest members.
Sawm, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, is the fourth pillar of Islam.
Ordained in the Holy Qur'an, the fast is an act of deep personal worship in which
Muslims seek a richer perception of God. Fasting is also an exercise in self-control
whereby one's sensitivity is heightened to the sufferings of the poor.
Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah, is the fifth pillar and the most significant
manifestation of Islamic faith and unity in the world. For those Muslims who are
physically and financially able to make the journey to Makkah, the Hajj is a once in a
lifetime duty that is the peak of their religious life.
The five pillars of Islam define the basic identity of Muslims, their faith, beliefs
and practices and bind together a worldwide community of believers into a
fellowship of shared values and concerns.

I can not say anything more than forgive, I do not want to lose Elga, I loved him.

MY SISTER MOST PRECIOUS
I was born in a hamlet in a very remote mountain Day after day, my
parents plowed the yellow dry soil, and their backs facing the sky. I have a sister,
three years younger than me. One time, to buy a handkerchief which all girls around
me seems to carry it, I stole money from my father's drawer. Dad immediately

not hear anyone claim to, so he said, "Well, then, you two should be beaten!"
He lifted up the bamboo stick high. Suddenly, my sister grabbed her arm and said,
"Dad, I did it!"Long stick hit my brother back repeatedly. Father was so angry that he

I stuck out my hand as gently as I can to my brother's swollen face, and said, "A boy

I, on the contrary, has decided to no longer continue to university.
Who knew the next day, before dawn, my brother left the house with some ragged

HEALTHY FOOD
Healthy food is a general term applied to all kinds of foods that are considered
more healthful than the types of food widely sold in Supermarkets. For example,
whole grain, dried beans, and corned oil are healthy food. A narrower classification
of healthy food is natural food.
This term is used to distinguish between types of the same food. Fresh fruit is a
natural food, but canned fruit with sugar and addictives, is not. The most precise term
of all and the narrowest classification within healthy food is organic foods, used to
describe food that has been grown of particular kind of farm.
Fruits and vegetables that are grown in gardens are treated with only organic
fertilizers are organic food. They are neither sprayed with poisonous not refined after

LOVING MONEY TOO MUCH
There was a man who liked money very much. He worked all of his life and
wanted to save all of his money for his own future. He was a real miser when it came
to his money. He loved money more than just about anything.
Even, just before he died, he said to his wife; "Now listen, when I die, I want

HEART DISEASE
Heart disease is Western society’s number –one killer. It accounts for one-
third of all deaths in America and for well over half the deaths among middle-
aged men. Heart disease was relatively rare in America at the turn of the century, but
is has risen dramatically since then, with a slight downturn in 1960.
Heart disease often viewed as a disease of modern living, spurred on by the
habits and the stress of industrialized society. Evidence for this idea comes from the
fact that non-western societies have relatively low rates of heart disease. And there is
a higher rate of heart disease among immigrants to America, such as Japanese
Americans and Chinese-Americans, than among those who remain in their native
country, suggesting that something about the Western environment promotes the
development of the disease.
Heart disease usually involves the formation of a fatty substance called plague in the
walls of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. If the arteries become
PLA
GIA
T
narrowed enough or blocked, the person may suffer a heart attack, that is death of a
region of heart muscle tissue.
Among the many factors that have been found to be related to the risk of
developing heart disease are high blood pressure, a history of heart disease among
one’s close relatives, cigarette smoking, being relatively overweight, and a high level
of a fatty substance called cholesterol in the blood. In addition to all of these well
established risk factors, it is now clear that stress can have a major impact on the
development of heart disease. People who continually undergo a great deal of stress
and who lack the ability to control it-are at a significantly greater risk for disease than
people who undergo less stress or who can manage stress successfully. Jobs that
impose high psychological demands but they provide the worker with the little
control-such as a cook, waiter, and hospital orderly-seem to be heart disease.

WEEKENDS
Weekends are great. I just love them! After a long week of school, I have the
biggest smile on my face when I see that Saturday is the next day on the calendar.
One reason weekends are great because you can sleep in. There’s nothing like
lounging around on a cold day in your flannel pajamas. You don’t have to take a
shower first thing in the morning. That means you can wait until the afternoon. I
can’t think of anything better than lounging around on a Saturday and not having to
rush off to school.
Also, weekends are very popular with me because I can play around.
Rollerblading around the neighborhood with my friends is always an adventure.
When I get tired of that, I usually invite them back to my house to play board games
like Monopoly or play cards like Go Fish.

As well as, weekends are great because I can stay up late. Sleepovers with my

DO WOMAN DESERVE HIGHER EDUCATION?
The issue we are discussing is whether women need higher education or not.
Some people think that there is no use for women to get higher education, for a
women’s main role is in their household and surrounding. Thus, knowing about
practical household management is sufficient for women to lead their lives.
Moreover, higher education does not ensure woman get a better life, so why bother
about it? There are many examples of women who succeed in their lives though they
enjoy only average education. They succeed in managing their household, educating
their children and participating in community activities.
On the other hand, some other people believe that women also have right to pursue
higher education. They claim that education is important for everyone, includingPLA

T
women, because it is one way to improve the quality of live. Therefore, every woman
must get education as high as they can pursue.
A further point they make is that higher education is not just the matter of achieving a
better position in a community or working sphere. More importantly it is the way to
empower women and to give them better understanding of life and universe.
In summary, women have the same right as men’s to get higher education.
However it is also their right to take the chance or just to leave it
The sense of taste is one of a person’s five senses.
There are four main kinds of taste: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. All other
tastes are just mixture of two or more of these main types. The surface of the tongues
has more than fifteen thousand taste-buds (or cells). These are connected to the brain
by special nerves which send the so-called ‘tastes messages’. When the tongue comes
into contact with food of any kind, the taste-buds will pick up the taste. The nerves
then send a message to the brain. This will make us aware of the taste. All this
happens in just a few seconds. There are four kinds of taste-buds, each of which is
sensitive to only a particular taste. These four groups are located in different. The
taste-buds for salty and the sweet tastes are found round the tip of the tongue and
along its sides. Sour tastes can be picked up only at the sides of the tongue. The taste-
buds for the bitter taste are found at the innermost edge of the tongue. There are
PLA
GIA
T
tastes-buds at the centre of the tongue. The senses of smell and the sight can affect
taste. The good smell of food increases its taste. Similarly, attractive colors can make
food appear tastier and more delicious. If food does not smell good or is dull-colored,
it will look tasty and may not taste good at all.
In summary, we taste with the help of taste-buds in the tongue, very
hot or cold sensations can make the taste-buds insensitive. Food that is too hot or too
cold, when placed in the mouth, will have no tastes at all.

The history of Islam in Australia pre-dates European settlement. From 1650,
muslim fisherman from South East Asia communicated and traded with Aborigines
from Australia's north. Some inter-marriage occurred. In the 1860s, some 3000 camel
drivers - with camels - came from Afghanistan and the Indian sub-continent. This
group contributed to the exploration of the Australian outback, working on both the
railway line between Port Augusta and Alice Springs, and the Overland Telegraph

Since the late 1960s there have been a number of significant muslim migrations
into Australia, most notably from Turkey and Lebanon. In the 1990s, refugees and
migrants from the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Albania, Indonesia and Malaysia have all made their home in Australia.

Islamic societies in Australia are affiliated with AFIC (The Australian Federation of

PILES OF TRASHPLA

Sometimes when I pass some certain places in Jakarta, I often see piles of
trash by the side of the street or even by the river. This view is annoying. It makes
our city look ugly and very dirty. If we talk near the pile of trash, we could smell
stinky odors coming from it. Piles of trash bring the bacteria with them. Isn’t that
very dangerous to our health if flies land on our food.
However many people live around this mountain-like heap of trash. Many
children play nearby. Also a lot of women wash their clothes, fruits and vegetables in
the river which is contaminated by trash. This is terrible. I think they do not realize
the danger, because they do not have knowledge about healthy living.
In my opinion, the government must take a regulation that prohibits people
to build hoses near the trash disposal (dump side). Also, there should be special
officer, like police who watch and catch people who throw trash on the ground or
into rivers. Moreover a big fine does make people stop dropping litter carelessly, the
government should put them into jail as punishment.
Finally, I think the efforts to keep our environment clean and tidy need hard
work from both citizen and government.

Cendrawasih, or Birds of Paradise, are considered by maney to be the most

helps them take cover when they are nesting and raising the young. They average
about 13 inches in length (33 cm), about the size and build of a crow. The males are
covered with different sizes and shapes of feathers in every conceivable color, and
they often have patches of skin without feathers that are wild, shocking colors as

of his neck are yellow, and he has a green chin.
Cendrawasih are primarily fruit eaters, but they will also eat berries, leaves,
and small animals, such as lizards and frogs. Their flight is slow and ponderous,
contrary to their graceful appearance, and they stay in the same area all tear, not
following any sort of migratory pattern.
Courtship is the main purpose of the cendrawasih’s gaudy appearance. The
females outnumber the males, so the males must compete with each other to win

The Legal Battle Between Apple and Samsung
Samsung Electronics has won the latest case in its continuing battle with the
American owned computer company Apple over property rights. A court in Japan
ruled in favor of the South Korean company last week in a case its Galaxy series of
smartphones and tablets.
The three judge panel in Tokyo said the products did not violate the property
rights of an Apple patent for organizing music and video across devices. The court
also ordered Apple to pay all costs relating to the court case. The case is just one of
many in the worldwide legal battle between Apple and Samsung.
Last month, a jury in the state of California found the South Korean company
guilty of willfully violating property rights on several patents owned by Apple. The
California jury awarded Apple more than one billion dollars in damages.
PLA

The patents include so called utility patents for Apple’s “pinch to zoom” and
“tap to zoom” technology. They also include design patents on the look and shape of
the iPhone, and one for the home screen design.
Madhavi Sunder is a professor of law at the University of California, Davis.
She has also written a new book called “From Goods a Good Life: Intellectual
Property and Global Justice.” She says issues involving design patents are more
complex.
Madhavi Sunder: “These design patents are much more controversial. And a
big question here is isn’t that what market competition is all about.” Professor Sunder
says patents are meant to increase competition and support design and development.
Madhavi Sunder: “For Apple to say its design which becomes a new industry
standard, the standard of sleek, cool, modern gadgets is something that only one
company can have an exclusive right over, this is a real problem. And it raises the
real question of whether or not we should be protecting design with patents with
patents in the first place.” She says Apple built its computer company using the same
methods that it is now opposing.
Madhavi Sunder: “Steve Jobs, ironically, built Apple’s reputation on the fact
that Apple freely took all the best ideas that were out there and tweaked them and
modified them to create a better product. He often quoted Picasso who said, “good
artists copy but great artists steal. “ The said thing now is that Apple is saying they

can do it but no one else after them can. This goes to the heart of what innovation is
about.
Samsung said the California court’s verdict, in its words, “should not be
viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for American consumers.”
In a rare memo to its employees, the company said it would continue its fight
until its arguments are accepted. On the same day as the California ruling, a court in
South Korea ruled in another case that both Apple and Samsung had violated each
other’s patents.
