LONG-TERMMOMENTUM,DRIVEN BY STRONGINVESTMENT

What is your assessment of the season that has just ended?Rodolphe Bouin : Our aim was to keep business on an even keel on the back of previous years’ results, which have made Futuroscope healthy and financially self-sufficient. We did better than that, with 1.9 million visitors, an increase of around 50,000. Futuroscope is still a favourite destination for families with children. Futuropolis, the open-air fun town for under-10s, has clearly proved to be very popular with this target group. The Park was turned into an events venue throughout the year, with special programmes during the school holiday periods, including aquatic shows in summer, FuturoWeen in October, Christmas illuminations, etc. My teams put in a lot of effort in 2019. I’m grateful to them for their enthusiasm and drive, and for upholding the Futuroscope values that we share with our visitors every day.

Futuroscope’s new "Destination Mars" attraction is also its biggest ever investment. What are you looking for from it?R B : You’re right: at 20 million euros, it’s the largest investment we’ve ever made. This is a new step for Futuroscope, underlining its role as a fun-driven destination, with a thrill-filled attraction for all the family in the shape of its first roller coaster. It combines cutting-edge technologies, some of which are unique in Europe, with a ride on the theme of space and space travel that is perfectly in keeping with what we are. Over the next few years, we will be focusing our efforts on large-scale, high-quality attractions that are capable of remaining in the top 5 for 20 years. It’s a pivotal development issue, and a challenge that has to be met in the search for ongoing customer satisfaction.

Speaking of which, what development projects are you working on? R B : AWe and our shareholders, la Compagnie des Alpes, the Vienne département council and the Caisse des Dépôts, strongly believe that it’s time to take visitor numbers up a level. To achieve that, we have to continue driving home the idea of Futuroscope as a must-see destination, a "resort" in its own right, by creating new content that will bring in visitors from further afield and get them to stay longer. That involves a programme to invest in major new, high-capacity attractions inside Futuroscope itself, as well as investment beyond the actual Park. Our car park is the setting for two cornerstone projects led by the Vienne département council, and they will keep us moving forwards and allow us to develop. The “Zero Gravity” free-fall simulator will be opening next spring, while the Arena-Futuroscope venue is expected to begin hosting national and international cultural and sporting events in late 2021. Futuroscope will also be able to take advantage .

BACK TO THE "FUTUR"

The attraction that became an icon"Dynamic Vienne" is a madcap film about a man who sleeps in on the morning of his wedding and has to rush and scramble across the Vienne département to meet his bride-to-be. The attraction was updated in 2007 and is still one of Futuroscope’s flagship shows. The perfect way to start a visit to Futuroscope.

In the late 1980s, Futuroscope started to grow.

Futuroscope opensFuturoscope, the educational leisure park, was the idea of René Monory, Chairman of the Vienne General Council. From the outset, the attractions focus on technology, science and discovery. The project, which was partly designed on the Epcot theme park in Florida and the Tsukuba Expo in Japan, was an enormous gamble for a rural region. Futuroscope was the first major amusement park to open in France, before Parc Astérix (1989) and Disneyland (1992).

1996First Imax 3D attraction by Jean-Jacques AnnaudThe first fiction film to be made using this then revolutionary technology: "Wings of Courage", which tells the legendary, epic tale of pilot Henri Guillaumet, who crashed in the Andes mountain range in 1930. Visitor numbers are at their peak with over 2.7 million through the gates.

Futuroscope celebrates 20 years Visitor numbers are rising steadily - from 1.6 million to 1.8 million between 2007 and 2010 - and Futuroscope is making a profit again.

2007

"Destination Mars", the blockbuster attraction"Destination Mars" is Futuroscope’s first roller coaster ride, and at 20 million euros its biggest ever investment. This new attraction sends visitors hurtling through a space training centre where they can experience what it’s like being an astronaut and put their mission capability to the test.

2020

Rodolphe Bouin succeeds Dominique Hummel at the helm of Futuroscope Rodolphe Boudin has worked his entire career at Futuroscope, which he joined in 2000 as a management auditor before taking on a number of management positions. He has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors since April 2018. Together with the teams at Futuroscope and with the support of La Compagnie des Alpes, he is working on a "ten-year vision".

2018Record investment for "The Extraordinary Journey"Inspired by Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, "The Extraordinary Journey" is voted top European attraction. This immersive attraction unlike any other is also a hit with the visitors it takes on a flight with their legs dangling free, and took four years and 12.5 million euros to build.

2017

Futuroscope joins La Compagnie des AlpesLa Compagnie des Alpes, which owns Parc Astérix and the Musée Grévin among others, becomes the majority shareholder in Futuroscope with 45% of the shares, ahead of the Vienne General Council (38%) and the Caisse des Dépôts (17%). "Arthur, the 4D Adventure", which was designed in association with Luc Besson and opened the previous year, is voted best attraction in the world by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA).

2011

The Raving Rabbids come in with a bang! The attraction designed in association with Ubisoft is a fun and immersive 3D journey from Prehistory through ancient Rome, and on to the Wild West and beyond: the biggest must-see yet for young visitors. "The Time Machine" also goes on to be voted best attraction in the world by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA).

2014

End of the adventure for the Amaury groupThe Amaury group, which had owned Parc du Futuroscope since spring 2000, pulls out. Despite the new Futuroscope high-speed train station bringing visitors direct to the park, admissions are down significantly and the accounts are in the red. Futuroscope is taken over by a semi-public company whose main shareholders are the Vienne General Council and the Poitou-Charentes Regional Council. Dominique Hummel is named Chairman of the Board.

ESSENTIALFUTUROSCOPEFuturoscope has over 40 attractions for visitors to enjoy and, as with any amusement park, there are some that really stand out. Here is a guide to the "Best Of" Futuroscope.

Dances with Robots2013 Updated version A definite must-do at Futuroscope: an unmissable chance to get down, and up, and all around, with some fast and furious dance action in a hip disco! The attraction is set to music by DJ Martin Solveig, and is the only one of its kind. Visitors are strapped into robot arms dancing in rhythm (three thrill levels: mild for young visitors - wild for the more eager) for an unforgettable and fun time.

Arthur, the 4D Adventure

2010An attraction devised by Luc Besson, director of the classic animated film trilogy Arthur and the Invisibles. The action never lets up in this precision-made 4½-minute 3D Imax film on a 9,700 ft² screen, complete with hair-raising in-theatre sensory effects, which has visitors holding on tight to their flying ladybuggies during a frenetic race through the mysterious, magical underground world of the Minimoys!

Futuropolis

2019Futuropolis is the new kids’ town at Futuroscope, with 21 games and attractions across three hectares for all the family to enjoy. Futuropolis is where children "play at grown-ups" and get to be the firemen, inventors, sailors and lifeguards they’ve always dreamed of being.

Through Thomas Pesquet’s Eyes

2018Astronaut Thomas Pesquet provides professional commentary in this 25-minute film as he takes you on his six-month space adventure, from pre-mission training right up to his final minutes on the International Space Station. The film is shown in the Kinémax theatre using 4K IMAX Laser technology on Europe’s largest screen, was co-produced by Futuroscope and 25eme Heure, and directed by Pierre-Emmanuel Le Goff and Jurgen Hansen.

The Time Machine with the Raving Rabbids

2014A bonkers journey through time with the lovable but slightly dim heroes of the Rayman video game franchise from Ubisoft. Visitors don 3D glasses, take a seat on the little train and watch five scenes that include Ancient Greece, the Far West and space travel, with special effects - jolts, smoke and other thrills - adding to the fun. One of the most popular attractions with younger visitors.

A unique zone: Journey into the Dark

2005A totally different kind of adventure. Visitors are led in groups of ten through total darkness by a blind guide. On their journey, they get to experience funny and peculiar sensations, such as crossing a street in Manhattan, travelling through the deepest

Louisiana Bayou, or walking across a rope bridge in the Himalayas. A journey that is guaranteed to bring thrills and an awareness of the experiences of the partially sighted. Visitors are asked to make a donation at the entrance to the attraction to help purchase equipment

for the visually impaired, with the support of the Paul Guinot association for the blind.

The Extraordinary Journey

2017Futuroscope’s star attraction. Inspired by the Jules Verne tale Around the World in 80 Days, The Extraordinary Journey is a round-the-world trip in… four minutes, via the deserts of Egypt, the Himalayas and the Taj Mahal. The enormous moving platform soars and plunges across landscapes to give visitors a literal eyeful thanks to the stunningly rendered images on the gigantic screen. A one-of-a-kind attraction in Europe

NEW IN 2020DESTINATION MARSThe family space adventureIn 2020, Futuroscope will be making its biggest ever investment: 20 million euros for “Destination Mars”, the attraction that will take visitors on a thrill ride through a space training centre.

This new attraction will give visitors a chance to experience what it’s like being an astronaut and see whether they have what it takes to go on a mission to Mars. The pre-show presentation is designed as a fun sensory experience with a series of tests to determine the visitors’ physical strength, and an opportunity to board a spaceship confinement module. The electromagnetic fields, solar flares, faster-than-light acceleration and top speeds of up to 35 mph bring all of Futuroscope’s technological experience to next-generation roller coaster fun for the family. The attraction promises to take visitors into an immersive world featuring effects that can’t be found anywhere else in France (such as indoor fireballs).

Futuroscope subsidiary FMD has worked in the Park for over 30 years. Now, it is sharing its experience with other companies in the culture and leisure industries.

FMD,EXPORTING FUTUROSCOPE’S EXPERTISE

The attractions at Futuroscope are kept running by our subsidiary company FMD (Futuroscope Maintenance and Development). A strategic choice that utilizes the Park’s specialists, ensures optimum maintenance management, and opens up new business opportunities.

"Setting up FMD has helped us to structure our service offer and teams, and try out new processes. Our multidisciplinary teams guide our customers through each stage in the design and operation of new attractions and future amusements. This overarching approach is unique in France. There are now a large number of leisure sites and companies, from amusements parks to recreation areas, museums and entertainment rooms, that use our services to deliver their projects," explains FMD’s General Manager Thierry Pirodeau.

FMD looks at each project from the visitor experience angle: atmosphere, set design, thrills, discovery, etc. We use our audiovisual and special effects expertise (wind, smells, physical touch, flames, vibrations) to devise innovative and custom-designed new creations. Around sixty staff are at work every day in sectors ranging from audiovisual and electromechanical maintenance, technical engineering, leisure-project management and mass roll-out (project coordination, steering and planning, oversight), leisure facility development and installation (design and prototyping, special effects), operations and measuring visitor flows, piloting energy performance and waste management, etc.

Spotlight on current developments:

Digital project at the Cité de l'EspaceToulouse (2020)

FMD’s skills are in demand from other parks and sites, and the company was selected to carry out all the digital transition work in the projection room at the Cité de l’Espace space discovery centre in Toulouse.

Planète Crocodiles - Terre de DragonsCivaux (2020)FMD is working on stagecrafting a route that extends the visit to the crocodile greenhouse in Civaux. This project requires end-to-end expertise including show control, moving scenery items, exterior fogging, smoke effects, etc.

L’Arena FuturoscopeA star draw in the attractive appeal of the VienneThe Vienne département council is bringing Futuroscope a major venue that will be capable of hosting renowned national and international cultural and sporting events. In September 2019, the departmental authorities and NGE Concessions signed a partnership agreement to fund, design, build and run the Arena. The two co-signatories entered into a 30-year public-private partnership, which includes a significant commitment of 20 million euros before tax from the Vienne département council. The Arena-Futuroscope will be built in a contemporary architectural style and include pleasantly inviting areas where visitors can stroll and wood is a prominent feature. It will be designed along the lines of an amphitheatre specifically for cultural activities, sports (basketball, handball, volleyball and tennis) and for entertainment, conferences, and events run by Futuroscope. It will also be highly modular, with a 1,500 to 6,000 seat capacity as required. Doors open in 2022www.lavienne86.fr

ZerOGravityFree fall simulatorThe ZerOGravity project, with the support of the Patrimoniale de la Vienne heritage management company, is the new destination for thrill-seekers at Futuroscope.Young and old alike can experience the excitement of free fall parachuting as they are held aloft by a jet of air blowing at up to 180 mph. The complex will also include full corporate entertainment facilities.Parachutists from all over France can also train in the only vertical wind tunnel of its kind in the country.ZerOGravity aims to become a top venue for the development of this sport, and will eventually host international competitions. Project manager Fabrice Crouzet and all the teams are on site, working to complete the attraction for its inauguration in the second quarter of 2020.www.zero-gravity.fr

Historial du PoitouMonts-sur-Guesnes (2021)FMD is carrying out the design engineering to define the technical proposal for the audiovisual elements in the set of this future visit, followed by the supply and installation of the equipment.

Arena-Futuroscope (2022)FMD has just been selected to provide the maintenance work for this new complex (see opposite).

THEGOOD-FOOD PARC Futuroscope has always paid close attention to the meal options it offers. And in this regard, it really does stand out. Here, we take a close look at Futuroscope’s emblematic eateries.

“From the outset, one of the major commitments from Futuroscope was to offer visitors a varied range of high-quality catering,” says the park’s Director of Catering and Hotels, Franck Floze. “And it’s an aim we still care about more than ever.” Today, there are seven restaurants inside Futuroscope, plus ten takeaway outlets and even an aerobar! Grilled meats, tapas, exotic burgers mean there is something for all tastes, at affordable prices. “Going to a restaurant should be a relaxing family experience and an extension of the visit,” adds Franck Floze. Every original and mouth-watering recipe on the menu is prepared on site by the park’s chefs and their teams.

La Crêpe VolanteCrêperie and Salad bar

A bit of a whacky place. Which is normal: the Raving Rabbids escaped from The Time Machine and added their touch. The range of crêpes is highly original, with a choice of scallop, goat’s cheese, Burger or Diced bacon and Gratin for a savoury option. If you’re looking for something sweet, let yourself be tempted by an upside-down tart or a Banana Split.

La Table d’Arthur All-you-can-eat buffet 1,300 seats (including terrace seating)

Futuroscope’s biggest restaurant, in a setting inspired by the Arthur, the 4D Adventure attraction. A

real “ship” with a 60-strong service and kitchen crew. A varied buffet with generous servings, hot wok dishes prepared in front of the diners, and original desserts. The ideal place to lunch or dine with the family.

Have a drink, with your legs dangling in the air!Aérobar

Skybar - 12 seats 60,000 passengers a year 10-minute flight incl. drink Space Meal (45-minute flight, with aperitif)

The world’s first ever skybar opened at Futuroscope in 2013. Aerobar is a 12-foot-diameter pod attached to a tethered balloon and secured in a metal tripod frame. It is designed for twelve guests to enjoy a drink (why not a glass of champagne?) served by the barman, with their legs hanging free 115 feet in the air.A deliciously dizzying experience.

Space mealThe Aerobar also offers an unforgettable experience in the summer months - serving up a vacuum-packed “space meal”… Just like the ones they eat in the International Space Station! The recipes are inspired by the meals devised by leading chefs for French astronaut Thomas Pesquet. A first-rate menu eaten without a knife (knives are not allowed in space!): gravlax and algae with an iodine tang, veal filet mignon and yuzu-scented water cake.Available from mid-July 2020, by reservation only.

La Cabane PerchéeWood-grilled meats 120 seats (including terrace seating

This grilled-meat specialist offers a choice of regional produce delivered through a short supply circuit: Charolais and Limousin beef, lamb from the Poitou, and vegetables from Marigny less than ten miles from Futuroscope. Its other strong point is, as a new culinary trend from Spain warrants, meats and vegetables that are cooked at a very high temperature to sear the meat and infuse a barbecue flavour to the whole dish. The charcoal-fired oven cooks the food quickly and gives it a unique crispiness.

Joyfood: the Thierry Marx touchFood court

Michelin starred chef Thierry Marx has devised a new range of fine street food for Futuroscope, aided by the Park’s catering teams who were trained by the chef himself. The menu draws on local produce and original taste combinations, such as tuna wraps, a new take on the lemon tart, and more.

Bistronomy - NEW RESTAURANT

Like a curiosity shop, this offbeat restaurant offers a collection of extraordinary items from the prominent attraction props, pop-up exhibitions and technical systems that have made Futuroscope’s name since it first opened - all in a relaxing, contemporary atmosphere made up of multiple themed areas.Innovative concert stage and railway dining car…Curiosity is the main ingredient in the restaurant and in the dishes. At L’Atelier des Saveurs, the surroundings are crafted and the meals are devised with an artist’s touch to tell a story.
