Onsite silo build and silo erection

This process involves manufacturing off site delivering components to site and erecting them

in situ. These were for two 800 tonne capacity sand silos that receive sand from a rail unloading facility. Don Valley Engineering designed, built, installed, and commissioned the full turnkey solution.

The silos were built up in sections away from the actual position they were to be erected. The silo sections were assembled and then erected on the ground before being lifted into position. The steel structure was erected first followed by the hip support section and then the cone section was installed into the hip section.

The silo hooped sections were assembled and lifted into the hip section and connected in place using the roof section as a lifting frame. The penthouse was then lifted into position before final access and material handling equipment was installed. Following final installation the system was commissioned by VE engineers.

Colour-Coded bits

The subdivision of the Wiha bit range into three colour-coded categories simplifies

selection, and all bits are now suitable both for normal screwdriving tasks and impact screwdrivers.

The simple classification, based on the screw shape to be fastened, means the right bit is identified quickly.

Blue T bits are intended for screws with 90° angle at the screw head, which tend to lie flat against the material. For screws with angles of more than 90°, with more of a countersunk shape, there are yellow Y bits and, if the user wants to fasten both types of screws, there are red all-rounders-TY bits.

Industrial Process News is extremely proud to present the internationally accredited CompEx

Scheme, owned and managed by JT Limited, as one of Offshore Europe’s elected top 40 service companies.

The CompEx Scheme is the recognised global scheme for the protection of oil, gas and chemical workers in both offshore and onshore activities. The scheme assesses the competency of employees and contract staff who are working in environments with the potential risk of explosive atmospheres. CompEx is a competency initiative, based upon the IEC Standards jointly developed by the Engineering Equipment Materials Users’ Association (EEMUA) and JT Limited, part of the JTL Group.

Having recently attended Offshore Europe’s exhibition, the CompEx Certification Body team led a fantastic exposition where they demonstrated to visitors about how their global solutions provide employers with proof of core competence of their electrical and instrumentation practitioners and application design engineers, as well as mechanical personnel and responsible persons who work in explosive atmospheres.

There is an international network of over 60 JT Limited licensed assessment centres that provides CompEx competency validation across the UK and at several overseas centres in over twenty countries. The course includes all instruction and assessments and, upon successful completion, candidates will receive a CompEx Certificate of Core Competence. There are also centres operating mobile facilities for Ex F & Ex01 – Ex04 which can be transported anywhere in the world.

Kardex Remstar caused a stir at the recent SPE Offshore Europe event when they showcased their latest automated

storage and retrieval solution: the NEW LR35 Vertical Buffer Module which was also featured in Offshore’s Tech Trek innovation trail. The Tech Trek team only selected exhibitors with new technology offerings, a great incentive for those looking for the latest innovations. Kardex LR 35 addresses the growing customer demand for greater operational flexibility, speed and accuracy. The LR35 provides this as no other ASRS system can; delivering individual tote bins to the operator whilst allowing the option of replenishment (put-aways) at the same time. Whether for an e-delivery customer who needs quick-picking order turnaround or a kitting/assembly operation where transparency and accuracy are the ‘must-haves,’ the LR35 simplifies fast accurate picking requirements for customers. Using standard size containers/cartons, the LR35 has the ability to bring just the item that the operator requires, not merely a tray or shelf from which a selection is made. The software for LR35 is web-based and can be used in conjunction with a wide range of hardware.

Seaward: Placing safety at the heart of the electrical industryIn the electrical test equipment industry, safety

is paramount. Seaward, whose head office is in Peterlee, County Durham, is celebrating 35 years of keeping people safe. Proud to manufacture in Britain, the company has become a global market leader developing premium quality products including portable appliance testers (PATs), software and accessories for the electrical, bio-medical and solar industries.

Seaward has now called for new laws requiring landlords and local authorities to carry out inspection and testing of electrical equipment.

Andrew Upton (pictured), the company’s

Managing Director, said, “The Grenfell Tower tragedy is believed to have started via a faulty fridge-freezer. Attention has quite rightly been

turned to the cladding, but this potential root cause has not been considered as widely. We need to make sure landlords and local authorities carry out very basic electrical tests. We’ve heard a lot from businesses and politicians in the past about supposed ‘red tape’ and the detrimental effect it can have on growth. But used correctly, it can help to save lives.”

Seaward remains pre-eminent in placing safety at the heart of the electrical industry; its emphasis on PAT testing workshops is also supported by online webinars and constantly-updated FAQs.

Microfiltration just got smarterSmart Separations has

developed a proprietary ceramic filter that can be tailored and functionalised to suit many different applications in the global microfiltration industry. Our patented platform technology allows the manufacture of self-assembled ’conical’ pores that cross through a ceramic wafer. This allows tight control of pore sizes in narrow increments, between 1 and 40microns, tailored to required specifications. With a high pore density and good mechanical strength, this disruptive filter provides a more controlled and versatile solution for several industries, including stem cell & blood research, air filtration, lowering of industrial emissions and food & drink processing.

As a case study, we looked at outdated and environmentally unfriendly processes that are used nowadays for the removal of pollutants in air and industrial exhausts. Our technology can heavily reduce

emissions and greatly improve the air we breathe, whilst reducing waste to land field. Our membrane technology can efficiently reduce air-borne particles (PM2.5/PM10), bad smells and pollutants in a wide range of industrial exhausts and within residential homes. This aligns with our core mission of ‘innovation to improve quality of life.’

We are currently looking for potential partners in our application sectors as well as interested parties with manufacturing expertise in ceramics processing.

Overcoming the skills gap: Industry 4.0According to EEF,

186,000 key engineering roles are needed each year to fulfil the demand from UK manufacturers, yet there were only 30,775 acceptances from universities onto engineering degrees in 2016. With no immediate solution to plugging this shortfall, manufacturers will need to evaluate options to upskill or redeploy their existing workforce. Adopting a digital workplace and considering how to streamline processes may contribute to tackling the skills gap and allow for focus to remain on core activities – developing innovative products and manufacturing processes. Enabling the workforce brings numerous benefits including the potential to boost productivity and improve worker satisfaction. Previous industrial revolutions have driven huge fiscal growth, enabled by productivity gains, and Industry 4.0 is no different.

In 2017, Canon was ranked as the 4th most reputable company in the world and the 3rd most

innovative, with over 3,000 patents registered in the US. Using our heritage, experience and innovation in implementing digital workplaces, we drive change and deliver tangible results, helping you achieve your goals.

One company that did face up to the challenge is British Steel. An ageing legacy IT system spread over 20 sites was replaced with an integrated document process and print infrastructure, bringing great productivity, efficiency and predictability to its business. Their new solution will transform the way staff work across the business.

Look, no hands! Blue Diamond addresses handed productsWith many years’ experience in the production of

customised mechanical components, the engineers at Hampshire Company Blue Diamond have identified the propensity of customers to spend thousands of pounds, unnecessarily, on the manufacture of handed products i.e. right and left hand versions of the same part.

Careful consideration of the ‘design for manufacture’ aspects of these products provides the opportunity to reduce cost dramatically – customers should not be obliged to order equal quantities of left hand and right hand products when they are not needed, just because it’s not economical to set-up for smaller productions runs.

It may be possible for parts to be machined in such a way that left hand and right hand features are only added at the end of the manufacturing process, allowing higher numbers of the base part, containing common features, to be produced more economically.

Blue Diamond endeavours to re-engineer handed parts in such a way that left hand and right hand attributes are assigned at the end of the manufacturing process – for example, the handed sub-components can be slotted into, screwed into or welded to the main assembly.

The streamlining of handed parts has become something of a speciality for Blue Diamond who examine all applications to see if by adapting, or adding mating components, parts can be rotated or adjusted to fit in such a way that the need for handed components is completed eliminated.

Finance funding helps Lasermaster press ahead with business growthCornish precision laser profiling and multi-axis

press brake bending company, Lasermaster, has increased demand and created jobs after securing an Access2Finance grant through Oxford Innovation, specialists in improving the competitiveness of SMEs.

The Redruth company saw high returning custom and new clients but, as exciting as it was, a problem was generated by the increasing customer demand.

Recognising the need for additional machinery, owner John Gotts contacted Oxford Innovation (OI) regarding Access2Finance, a scheme designed to educate businesses about finance and grant funding to accelerate growth.

He explains, “Back then, our only press was working non-stop and we couldn’t complete orders at the required rate. Additional equipment involved huge investment and taking such levels of finance out of the business was difficult. Thanks to OI, we secured a grant for £56,869 to purchase a much-needed press and scanner, another vital piece of equipment. We now create ready copies of items with pinpoint accuracy, quality control every piece we produce and create templates for the full piece far more quickly than a team of Drawers ever could.”

OI Programme Manager, Heather Coupland, added, “Access2Finance delivers opportunities for companies and we share specialist knowledge and expertise in relation to eligibility and what is available to assist businesses in

the application process. John advised us that he required more machinery to expand but costs were prohibitive. We reviewed the grants available, advised on suitable funds and provided the support to apply and as well as increased productivity, this has resulted in new jobs for Lasermaster with more expected in the future.

“Businesses in this position should contact us. Each grant fund has various rules, targets and constraints but we manage these daily and can simplify the process for clients.”

Continuous Monitoring of Offshore Flexible Riser Carcass Failure

The increased use of dynamic riser systems on offshore installations worldwide brings with it complex integrity

issues for the operators. In particular, the multi-layer PVDF type flexible risers are prone to a number of failure mechanisms, namely: (i) pressure sheath pull-out from the end termination; (ii) carcass fatigue; (iii) carcass collapse; (iv) carcass pull-out; and (v) carcass unwinding. The latter, also referred to as carcass tearing or un-spiraling, is thought to be the newest form of failure of this type of flexible pipe.

This paper reports on the work carried out by MISTRAS and an International Oil Company on the development of an online Acoustic Emission continuous monitoring system to monitor for riser carcass pull-out and/or unwinding. The two year research project resulted in the deployment of an intrinsically safe system installed on two North Sea platforms. Results from the research trial and continuous monitoring will be presented and discussed in this paper.

Veolia awarded a contract at Welsh Water’s Five Fords WwTWVeolia Water Technologies (Veolia) has been

awarded a contract to supply a flagship Liquor Treatment Plant (LTP) at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), near Wrexham, North Wales. Welsh Water, along with their partner Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), are developing a flagship sludge treatment centre at Five Fords WwTW. Welsh Water, the only not-for-profit water company in England and Wales is investing £35m to transform Five Fords into an

innovative energy park – the first of its kind in the industry to incorporate solar, advanced anaerobic digestion and hydro generation schemes at one site.

As a result of the substantial increase in the sludge throughput and implementation of a THP plant a new LTP is required to treat the centrate prior to return to the inlet of the WwTW. Veolia’s solution for Five Fords WwTW is a HYBASTM (IFAS) ANITATM Mox plant. The ANITATM Mox process enables both

aerobic nitritation and anoxic ammonia oxidation to take place on a one-stage biofilm process. HYBASTM (IFAS) technology using suspended carriers has been a proven application of the MBBR process for more than 20 years. Applying the same concept to ANITA™ Mox has shown significant benefits.

Veolia continues partnership with Severn Trent WaterVeolia Water Technologies (Veolia) has secured

a contract to upgrade the treatment process at Trescott Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) to meet a tighter ammonia discharge consent of 1 mg/l. As with the recently announced Little Aston WwTW upgrade, this project will use Veolia's Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology to provide a cost-effective solution which will meet current and future needs.

Severn Trent Water and its Tier 1 delivery partner, Mott Macdonald Bentley (MMB), were considering a number of options, including replacing the existing trickling filters with an activated sludge plant, but these presented significant budget challenges. A feasibility study conducted by

Severn Trent Water and MMB established that the existing trickling filters were in good condition with a suitable asset life. Veolia therefore worked closely with the project team to develop an MBBR upgrade solution which would enable the existing assets to be retained, providing significant CAPEX and OPEX benefits.

A visit to another sewerage treatment works, Cudworth WwTW, allowed the process

engineering and operations teams to see the MBBR technology in action, providing a reassurance of both its ease of operation and process performance. Trescott WwTW will be the fifth Severn Trent Water site to use Veolia's MBBR technology, demonstrating Veolia’s expertise and credibility in the field, as it continues to pioneer and promote this wastewater treatment solution.

Worried about your factory or warehouse overheating? Is summer approaching and you have no effective

cooling for your building?

Let EcoCooling sort out all your cooling needs in 2018!

With over 15 years of experience and over 4,500 installations worldwide, EcoCooling has adapted and revolutionised evaporative cooling products and controls to ensure systems are suitable for most UK industrial installations.

EcoCooling systems use cost-effective evaporative cooling techniques which are a simple, safe and natural alternative to refrigeration. Utilising these systems can result in up to 90% reduction in operational cooling costs.

EcoCooling’s revolutionary techniques have allowed significant advances in the simple evaporative cooling technique. With specialised equipment, our products can effectively and efficiently either spot cool machinery or blanket cool whole warehouses, or both!

Ventilation coupled with evaporative cooling and modern controls can provide industrial and commercial premises with a sophisticated air handling system that can compare with any air cooling refrigeration system at a fraction of the energy cost and provide a high level of control of the environment.

Compared to a traditional refrigeration system the estimated energy savings are expected to be around 90%. A single EcoCooler, rated at 35kW, can show carbon savings of up to 10,000kg per year and cost less than 15p per hour to run!

(Total approximate cost per 168-hour continuous working week – £22.18)

The largest external EcoCooler provides 18 000m3 of air flow per hour. In addition, EcoCoolers consistently keep

temperatures at 24C and lower, year-round (including the hottest days of the year).

EcoCooling systems are used to cool any type of factory or industrial warehouse, as seen in a recent case study for Cummins Diesel Engines. 36 down-discharge EcoCoolers are used to cool the warehouse containing important factory equipment as well as factory workers. The EcoCoolers are able to use natural ventilation when the outside ambient temperature is below 15C, any temperature above this and the systems enable evaporative

cooling methods to cool the factory. Both cooling options provide natural, fresh air to the building and the workers, resulting in an increase of productivity due to more comfortable working conditions.

With a range of installations over the UK and Europe, EcoCooling has worked with many companies to provide cooling for their specific needs. Main installations include factories and warehouse cooling for TKMaxx, Cummins Diesel, Net-a-Porter, Matalan, Premier foods and many different local council and public-sector organisations.

With 100% cool, fresh air entering the building, EcoCoolers provide the perfect option for a comfortable and productive working environment.

For more information about EcoCooling’s revolutionary systems, visit our website at or give us a call for a quote from your local installer!

Effective recovery and reuse of heatOne of the easiest ways to improve efficiency

in wastewater AD plants is to recapture heat. Matt Hale, International Sales and Marketing Director at HRS Heat Exchangers, explains how to do it, and what to do with this recovered heat.

Over the years, different wastewater companies have adopted different approaches to sludge treatment, but there is now a trend towards anaerobic digestion (AD) and away from incineration. While the number of AD facilities treating sewage sludge may be growing steadily, rising just 12% from 2010-2015, these 159 plants actually generated over 25% more power over the same period. This can largely be attributed to efficiency improvements within the wastewater sector, which often sets the standard for operational efficiency within the entire AD industry.

Many of the original wastewater AD facilities are now looking to upgrade, switching from producing electricity to bio-methane in order to take advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive, particularly given the positive outcome of last

year’s consultation on the scheme. However, small-scale improvements have been no less important in helping to boost the sector’s energy output and upgrading an existing plant is a good opportunity to improve its overall efficiency, maximising energy production and greenhouse gas savings. One of the easiest ways to improve efficiency is by recapturing heat. Heat exchangers represent the best way of doing this, having a much lower heat requirement than tanks with heating jackets (up to half of that of some systems). In fact, a well-designed heat exchanger system could recover and reuse 40% of the heat produced by a wastewater AD plant. But not all heat exchangers are equal and one size does not fit all- the AD industry covers many different sectors processing a variety of feedstocks from food waste to farm residues, to a liquid by-products. One range providing popular with

wastewater AD operators is the DTI series from HRS, which is a double tube heat exchanger. The inner tube is corrugated to ensure improved heat transfer performance and resistance against tube wall fouling, resulting in reduced maintenance periods. In addition, the tube in tube design permits the processing of fluids with particles without any tube blockage, making it suitable for sewage AD plants.

But having recovered this valuable heat, what are water companies doing with it? With a typical 1.5mW wastewater AD plant producing as much as 40,000 tonnes of liquid digestate each year- bringing economic and logistical challenges associated with its storage and transportation- many operators are using their surplus heat to improve their digestate management systems. After all, if it isn’t concentrated, the volume and

consistency of digestate can become a costly bottleneck in plant efficiency.

Using surplus heat to separate water from digestate by concentration can reduce the overall quantity of digestate by as much as 80%, greatly lowering the associated storage and transport costs. A well designed system, such as HRS’ Digestate Concentration System (DCS), will include measures to retain the valuable nutrients in the digestate, while the evaporated water can be condensed and returned to the front end of the AD process, reducing the amount of energy and water used by the plant. After concentration, the treated digestate dry solid content can be as much as 20% (often a fourfold improvement), making it easier, and cheaper, to transport and handle.

By improving the efficiency of their wastewater AD plants, many of the UK’s water companies are enjoying increased ROI, helping to make their service more affordable and sustainable; particularly important as the water industry uses around 3% of all the electricity generated in the UK. HRS’ customers and end-users already include Southern Water, Severn Trent Water, Welsh Water, Yorkshire Water, Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, Wessex Water and Thames Water. And with Ofwat’s recent water 2020 report set to kick-start a market for treated sewage sludge, there’s a real feeling that the coming years will bring about even more partnerships between water companies and firms developing new treatment methodologies.

Five essential health & safety updates for business leaders in 2018

Aside from their devastating human cost, occupational accidents and ill-health bear a significant cost to employers through staff

absence and higher insurance premiums. Staying up-to-date when it comes to health & safety is therefore essential to running a safe and efficient workplace and there are some significant changes taking place. Here are five you need to know about in 2018:

1) ISO 45001 is comingISO 45001; (Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements) is a new standard due to be published in March 2018 which has been designed to improve occupational health & safety management around the world.

ISO 45001 is intended for use by any organisation, regardless of its size or the nature of its work, and can be integrated into other health & safety programmes.

Under the standard’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) framework top management are required to demonstrate commitment through leadership to ensure that workers have the appropriate skills to support their health and safety and those effective controls are put in place.

2) Changes to sentencing guidelines are starting to bite Following the introduction of the new sentencing guidelines for health and safety, corporate manslaughter and food safety and hygiene offences, which came into force in February 2016, fine levels for companies prosecuted for offences under the Health and

Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations have increased dramatically. A key change is that companies can now be heavily penalised for causing risk of harm as well as actual harm and consequently cases which would once have attracted fines in the thousands are now resulting in fines in the millions.

3) The rise of Industry 4.0 is bringing both challenges and opportunitiesThe world of work is changing rapidly not least through the rise of Industry 4.0. People are living and working for longer; many tasks are being automated; modern communication technologies are dissolving the work/home divide; new materials like nanotechnology (including tiny air-born waste products that can damage our health) and new techniques are presenting new risks; and more ‘flexible’ employee contracts are becoming commonplace.

A literature review from The British Safety Council examining these changes suggests they will be good for worker health and wellbeing

but there will be many associated challenges to navigate and risks that business leaders will need to understand and control.

4) Bosses are being encouraged to establish a culture of challenging upwards in safety critical situationsResearch tells us that people tend to follow the lead of more senior personnel in a safety critical situation, even if the decision or action is flawed.

In safety critical situations it is vital to establish a culture that allows everyone to raise concerns and challenge constructively regardless of rank or seniority.

This principle is well established in aviation, and is now being adopted elsewhere including healthcare.

5) Lessons from elite sports can improve worker health and safety There is a body of evidence to show that poor nutrition and overuse of caffeine and sugar can affect attention and coordination sufficiently to impact on safety as well as long term health.

Employers have started turning to the world of elite sport to learn how the principles of effective nutrition can be applied in the workplace for significant gain.

The Health & Safety Event, held at the NEC, Birmingham from the 10-12 April 2018 is the perfect opportunity for business professionals to keep up-to-date with important safety updates and source the latest technology to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.

The UK’s only event dedicated to Laboratory Professionals

THINK globally, TEST locally

Getinge: The leading global provider within healthcare and life sciencesGetinge first attended the Lab Innovations event in

2015 following a visit to the 2014 show as a delegate. It was evident that the attendance of industry specific personnel was of a focused nature towards our large Lab marketplace and the cross section of footfall ranged from owner/operator through to lead specifiers of all levels of business. This trend of delegate has remained the same during Getinge’s exposure to Lab Innovations but with the numbers of visitors steadily increasing which in turn has offered a good upturn in quality enquiry. As a measure, this acts as a strong indicator to any event organiser and has allowed our organisation to continue its commitment towards 2018 attendance.

As an event, we utilise Lab Innovations for UK market product launches on product specifically tailored towards the Lab industry. So far since 2015, we have launched 3 different capital equipment devices and the plans are to once again feature a new model in the coming year. From our records, we can identify multiple orders which can directly be attributed to a Lab Innovations presence, would Getinge have secured

these orders if we had not featured at the show in the respective years? No, the orders had been secured on the stand! This is a real success!

Getinge will look forward to continuing its support to Lab Innovations and growing our brand from its success.

Safematic coating modules: Rapid sputter coating of metals for thin film and SEMThe choice of sputter coater has often been a compromise

between either fine grain coating for SEM or the ability to rapidly deposit a wide range of materials for thin film and advanced EM applications.

Safematic now offers two plug-in sputtering modules that slot into the compact, bench top coater base unit. The standard SP-010 sputtering module is ideal for many SEM applications, but if very rapid deposition is required then the SP-011 fast sputtering module is recommended.

The SP-011 is optimised for sputtering oxidising metals such as

ITO and aluminium. The compact module has a simple interface to the power and gas supplies in the CCU-010 coater base unit. Exchanging modules takes seconds. Both sputtering modules include unique sputtering head cooling and monitoring ensures reproducible high

quality coating and to allow very long process runs. A further coating option is the CT-010 carbon coating module featuring automatic a carbon fibre spooling system which allows up to 50 sequential carbon evaporation runs.

The Safematic CCU-010 HV coater has an integrated oil-free pumping system helping to give a class-leading vacuum performance (to 2 x10-6mbar).

Purolite is pleased to announce its Jetting process for particle size chromatographic resins in the Chromalite® range

For liquid chromatography (ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction, reverse-phase RP or solid phase extraction

SPE) uniform particle size provides improved kinetics, resolution, performance consistency and superior packing properties.

Classic batch emulsion polymerisation is a robust, proven technology which results in a relatively broad (Gaussian) particle size distribution. Jetting is an alternative continuous efficient manufacturing process for chromatographic resin beads with a narrow particle size distribution resulting in higher yields and no need for screening, thus better economically. Jetting technology allows production of even larger batches (>1,000kg) in a very short time. The availability of consistent supplies of large volumes of chromatographic resin beads also open up the possibility of new potential larger scale applications.

Jetting technology operates with two different processes, depending on the particle size needed. The first Purolite jetting process – membrane or ‘can’ jetting – entails using a membrane with very small, discrete orifices, through which the polymer is passed. This device is capable of producing

uniform particle size chromatographic resins from ~15 to 250 micron.

The second process, plate jetting, utilises a plate with many precisely engineered holes, through which the resin polymer is passed. Uniform particle size chromatographic resins of ~150 to >1,000 micron can be produced using this method.

Save time with the free method checkPipetting is often time-consuming

in the laboratory both for routine tasks such as serial dilutions, as well as for more complex methods such as PCR. Automatic pipetting systems, also called pipetting robots, can free-up time for other tasks. However, automation is not worthwhile for every method. BRAND® now offers a free method check to answer the question how much time automatic pipetting actually saves.

The offer is aimed at laboratories that regularly use pipettes and want to flexibly automate recurring tasks. BRAND provides the check for methods such as PCR, qPCR or ELISA, as well as for routine tasks such as

the reformatting and replication of plates, the preparation of assay ready plates or cherry picking. Because work is performed differently in each laboratory, BRAND will always look at the individual method of the customer and will not use predefined standard methods.

In addition to the free method check, BRAND also offers a free two-week-practice validation with the new Liquid Handling Station pipetting system. “The BRAND Liquid Handling Station is very flexible. With the new specifically developed BRAND software, we can create a method for each test customer in just a few minutes mapping the user’s day-to-

day (usual) pipetting procedures. Once installed these methods can be automatically executed and hence lot of time can be saved for other tasks.” says Dr. Antonio Romaguera, Head of Product Management at BRAND.

What a year it has been for us here at Ioniser-Pro!Having launched our very first

product in May 2017 – The Ioniser-Pro 600 – fast forward to 2018 and we now have NINE products under our belt including The Ioniser-Pro Blow (blower unit), Anti-Static Curtain, ESD Wrist and Heel Straps and two different lengths of Ioniser bars. All of which can be purchased online at www.ioniser-pro.co.uk

In October, we exhibited for the first time at Interplas and what a great show it was!

One of our key objectives at Interplas was to launch the Ioniser-Pro Blow and Ioniser-Pro Blow F which are two speed, twin fan units designed for the fast flooding of your work area with static eliminating Ions.

Whilst exhibiting we were asked by many visitors if we did a small ‘desktop’ version of our static elimination bars. We took this feedback to

our engineers who got straight on it and within 2 weeks had manufactured the new baby of our family The Ioniser-Pro 320.

Also asked often was if we had an ‘Air Assisted’ bar to further help with blowing dust and contamination away from the destaticized material and extend the range of the bar.

After a month in design and another in manufacture we are now at the testing stage for our Ioniser-Pro Air-Assist and anticipate launching this by the end of January!

Talk to the expertsYou have only to look around you to get

a small insight into the diverse range of products that have been screen or pad printed. Examples include bottles, containers, dials, fascia panels, household appliances, light fittings, spectacle frames and lenses. Screen printing is particularly versatile, often being used to deposit media such as conductive inks, precious metals, solder resists and adhesives. Mascoprint offer expert advice, assisting clients to utilise the screen printing process in many industrial applications, including specialised areas such as nano-technology, silicone wafer and solar panel production. Machines supplied by Mascoprint are installed as part of a manufacturing process, rather than a stand-alone printing process. Typically, new customers have no experience of screen or pad

printing and rely upon Mascoprint to deliver practical and effective training. Most industrial products require purpose-built tooling, be it a plastic bottle requiring a profiled chuck and rack and pinion drive for print registration, or a simple jig to hold a flat panel in the correct orientation during the print process. With over 45 years in the business, the company has a wealth of knowledge and experience, enabling it to offer bespoke tooling solutions.

The company also manufactures screens and cliché plates and supplies silicone pads, squeegees, doctor blades and Marabu inks, making Mascoprint a ‘one-stop shop’ for industrial screen and pad printing requirements.

Environmental issues highlighted at Interplas 2017On the morning of day 2 of the Interplas

2017 exhibition, BBC Radio 5 Live featured a news item reporting that UK pub operator, JD Weatherspoon, had decided to stop using plastic straws. This announcement highlighted the challenges facing the plastics sector.

At Interplas 2017, visitors to the Bunting Magnetics stand had specific metal contamination issues that needed addressing. However, it was plastics and their environmental impact that hit the headlines.

“As we supply equipment both to companies manufacturing primary plastic products and recycling plastics, we see the problem from both sides,” said Dave Hills, Bunting’s Head of Sales.

“Primary plastic manufacturers have been recycling and reusing their waste for many years. Indeed, this often necessitates the need for Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors, removing any rogue metal introduced during this recycling process.”

“However, the real challenge is collecting, processing and then producing a usable plastic product from recovered secondary plastic materials. Again, we have installed Metal Separation Systems to remove ferrous and non-ferrous metals, but the end market for the final recycling-sourced plastic product is an issue.”

Award Winning Pump!High Pressure Low Volume Dosing Pumps

The Verderflex Dura is the first real advance in hose pump

technology since the high pressure hose. The Verderflex Dura 5 and Dura 7 combine a close coupled pump’s compactness with traditional long coupled pump benefits in superior High Pressure Low Volume dosing pumps. Unlike traditional high shear pumps that reduce flocculent particle sizes and result in both increased chemical use and higher operating costs, the Verderflex Dura 5 and Dura 7’s bring gentle pumping to sub-liter per hour flow rates. Off-Gassing liquids, such as Hypo, often cause traditional pumps to vapor lock, however, the Verderflex Dura 5 and Dura 7 readily pumps these liquids with ease. With no valves or stators to wear, Verderflex Dura 5 and Dura 7 pump lime and similar highly abrasive chemicals at a pressure of

5 to 8 bar with minimal downtime. Other features of Verderflex Dura 5 and Dura 7 include:

n No clogging maintenance costs n Long life heavy-duty hoses n True dry priming eliminating pre-wetting and priming n Superior secondary containment and viscous performance n Care free dry running capabilities.

In addition to the above advantages, the simple to use Verderflex Dura 5 and Dura 7 provide scalable performance and low maintenance. They are an excellent chemical dosing solution for water-treatment, brewing and food industries with much lower operating costs!

Hydra-Cell Pumps achieve Ultimate Metering AccuracyHydra-Cell Metering pumps

enable users to meet or exceed API 675 performance standards with virtually pulse-less, linear flow.

These pumps achieve superior levels of accuracy, repeatability and linearity, while delivering precise, constant flow by employing unique hydraulic oil management systems.

To maintain accuracy in a hydraulically-actuated metering pump, the volume of oil on the non-process side of the diaphragm must remain constant.

Conventional metering pumps rely on vacuum sensing or mechanical activation to compensate for leakage past the plunger and may not compensate on every pump stroke. In fact the mechanical activation can be in contact with the diaphragm, causing stress on the diaphragm and potentially rupture.

Hydra-Cell pumps incorporate a replenishment valve in every piston assembly which operates on the suction stroke, thus ensuring optimum actuating oil volume on every diaphragm pressure stroke to provide superior accuracy that exceeds the performance demands of API 675.

Electronic variable speed drives or mechanical speed variators are used to control flow, replacing complex stroke adjusters and eliminating the loss of accuracy and linearity inherent in such designs.

Samuel Grant Packaging launches the Samson Nano Ferret

Samuel Grant Packaging are delighted to announce the launch

of Samson Nano Ferret, an extension of their pallet wrapping range.

Having celebrated huge success with the Samson Nano pallet wrapping system, with its unique ‘price per pallet’ charging system and bespoke inbuilt reporting software, the company launch the Ferret as a solution to big or awkward pallets that are unable to fit onto a standard turntable.

Developed by Italian engineers, Ferret is the direct translation of their name for the machine – ‘Viverra’, and seems quite apt for this little machine from a Yorkshire company that ferrets its way around difficult sized pallets.

The Ferret will be available on the same ‘price per wrapped pallet’ basis as the existing Samson Nano,

meaning that the machine, as well as its maintenance and upkeep are capex free, as is the film – clients simply pay a fixed price per wrapped

pallet. As with the Samson Nano, the machine is optimized to make the most of Samson’s Nano 33 layer stretchfilm, ensuring the best possible stability, and making sure that clients’ goods reach their destination in perfect condition.

The machine is fitted with inbuilt reporting software like its big brother, which means that clients can see how the machine is operating from wherever they may be.

Samuel Grant Packaging’s team of Samson Nano specialists pride themselves in solution-focussed customer service, and will work with clients to ensure that they save money, save time, save hassle, and moreover get exactly the pallet wrapping solution that works perfectly for their specific business requirements.

Samuel Grant Packaging launches AIR|SHIELD®

Samuel Grant Packaging are delighted to announce the launch

AIR|SHIELD® in association with their business partner Gaia Packaging Solutions, an innovative protective packaging solution for which Samuel Grants are the sole distributors.

Challenging the dominance of polystyrene and other traditional packaging materials eg bubble wrap, foam and film, AIR|SHIELD® offers improved protection benefits with significantly better commercial and environmental credentials.

Utilising the free advisory service, the AIR|SHIELD® range can deliver either a fully automated or manual solution providing the option of immediate performance improvements on packaging lines. Combine this with reduced volumetric size, simplified handling, improved protection

and reduced storage space and significantly reducing waste in the domestic supply chain makes AIR|SHIELD® the next evolution for protective packaging solutions.

Made from 100% recyclable film, AIR|SHIELD® is set to revolutionise the packaging industry, and reduce its impact on the environment. Traditional protective packaging material such as polystyrene is

not only bulky and challenging to transport, it also creates immense amounts of waste, significant amounts of which end up in landfill.Polystyrene and foam packaging causes much concern amongst environmentalists due to the length of time it takes to biodegrade (if at all!). It peppers the world’s seas and shorelines, and in its foam form causes harm to both land and sea creatures. AIR|SHIELD® is set to challenge this impact, and is recognised as the next generation in protective packaging for those customers wishing to benefit from competitive price points whilst mitigating their carbon footprint and reducing waste within the domestic supply chain.

Totally clean and environmentally friendly

Cleaning Company of the Year

Industrial Process News is happy to announce that Total Clean Services Ltd have been specially selected to receive this issue’s Cleaning

Company of the Year in light of their top quality cleaning services and unmatched dedication to excellent customer service.

Total Clean is a family-run business, launched in 1988 by Pedro and Maria Garcia, parents of the current Group Managing Director, Carlos Garcia. Carlos took over the company in 1995 and has led the company to further success and strengthened the reputation of the Total Clean brand. The contract commercial cleaning company is based in London, but has six regional offices around the UK, with more locations soon to be added.

Total Clean specialise in providing first rate cleaning services across a wide range of business sectors including offices, car showrooms, schools and colleges and medical facilities. They also offer an extensive range of complementary services covering hard floor & carpet cleaning and maintenance, washroom and laundry services, janitorial supplies, window cleaning, waste management and much more.

The company is still driven by the goals set by their founders: a drive to deliver cleaning services of the highest quality with integrity, reliability and value; a promise to meet and exceed client expectations and needs; and a commitment to exceed all statutory, regulatory and environmental requirements. Better yet, Total Clean is accredited by a number of industry bodies and associations which mean they are subject to regular inspections and audits, assuring customers

that they are getting the best service every time.

An innovative company committed to constant improvement, Total Clean has even specially designed and launched their own cleaning products. The range of products, Total Defence, is extremely high quality, versatile, reliable, and environmentally friendly. The range includes glass cleaners, bactericidal washroom cleaners and even a fogging service which is popular among medical practices during the final and most imperative stage of cleaning, guaranteeing a fully infection and contamination free area.

We spoke to Group Managing Director, Carlos Garcia about the philosophy behind Total Clean’s stellar performance, who explained, “Our values are responsibility, excellence and improvement. Total Clean has thrived as a result of the strict ethos instilled by our founders 30 years ago and these values continue to drive our success today.”

One of the best things about Total Clean is that their cleaners are specially trained in cleaning a wide variety of different buildings and establishments. The setting and location is the very first thing people see when they walk into any establishment, so whether it be a client visiting their solicitor in a law firm, a parent visiting a school for parent’s evening, even a window-shopper walking into a retail outlet, it is crucial the space is clean, clear and inviting to all. Carlos added, “We have a wide variety of clients, for whom we provide different services. In addition to our standard office cleaning service, we also clean car showrooms, educational facilities and medical practices, where the requirements are extremely rigorous. We also offer

window cleaning, specialist hard floor and carpet cleaning, washroom and laundry services and outdoor maintenance. Other services include building and end of tenancy cleaning. Many of our clients, such as medical practices anticipating a CQC inspection, benefit from our deep cleaning service, where we take care of hard to reach areas and spaces that are difficult to access on a day to day basis.”

Almost all sectors can benefit from Total Clean’s services, including commercial offices. In addition to being skilled and highly trained, the cleaners at Total Clean are also able to carry out their work without disturbing the office or surrounding environment. On top of that, Total Clean are flexible enough to accommodate different types of offices, from large office spaces to small SMEs. Whether it is media agencies, law firms, accountants or more, Total Clean

take great care to protect their client’s valuable assets by only hiring the most vetted and trustworthy of staff.

Total Clean also services the hospitality sector, where the clientele’s first impression is extremely important, as is the need to keep the premises hygienically clean.

Public sector facilities can present challenges with differing building size, locations and purpose, and they often have tight security and rigorous health and safety standards which need to be met at all times. Total Clean’s flexibility and ability to work with a variety of different types of buildings and their cost-effective service means public sector clients can relax knowing they are getting the best cleaning possible without breaking their budgets.

Understandably, schools and other educational establishments require a great deal of cleaning indeed, with both students and teachers benefiting from a clean and uncluttered learning environment. However, another crucial aspect is child safety. As such, all Total Clean staff members are DBS checked before working in schools and even wear uniforms so that they can be easily spotted right away.

Medical facilities have extremely high cleaning standards in order to meet the rigorous requirements of the CQC. Total Clean’s operatives are well trained in infection control and their bespoke range of products are specifically designed with this in mind. Total Clean’s fogging service ensures that all surgeries and medical practices are completely contamination free.

In addition, Total Clean pride themselves on their responsiveness, with a team of area and operations managers able to respond to any ad hoc queries or issues immediately, giving their clients additional reassurance of a top quality service.

If you are looking for a new cleaning company to help ensure your company always gives the best impression to your clientele, then be sure to get in contact with Total Clean using the details listed below.
