THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME:
In our Christian walk, we see from the readings today that we need to always be faithful, available for God’s call to step out for His purposes, and to seek Wisdom in all ways for “she will be found sitting at the gate”. What gate you might ask. Jesus is the Gate through which we must pass to enter the Kingdom of God, and He is the Wisdom of the Father. Sit at His feet, as did Lazarus’ sister Mary, and learn from Him the way in which you should walk. As we daily meditate on God’s Word, sit quietly and allow Him to speak to our hearts, He will direct our paths and we will be at the right place, at the right time, when the Bridegroom comes and calls His bridesmaids to come to the Heavenly Wedding Banquet, with our lamps full. Wisdom is sought by those who truly desire to know what is indeed the righteous way in all things, and to obey as instructed. We see from the Gospel today, that there were five bridesmaids with ample oil in their lamps (they were faithful and ready), and five with not enough oil. Wisdom pours into those who are faithful, those who are sincere in their desire to follow in ways of righteousness, and not ways of the world. It seems a little unkind of the five bridesmaids who had enough oil to refuse to share what they had with those who had none. However, those who had none did not prepare for what they knew was coming up. They knew that the Bridegroom was coming at some point, just not exactly when, and so lived unprepared lives, thinking that they could acquire what they needed at the last minute. Jesus says that we do not know the day or time when the Bridegroom may come, and we need to be prepared. Such an excellent parable to illustrate the need for us to be faithful, awake, and ready for His arrival. If we are not ready for when the Bridegroom comes and calls His guests to the wedding banquet, the doors will be shut and we will not gain entrance. Wisdom tells her children the right way to be prepared. Do we care enough to listen? Five of the bridesmaids did, and were prepared. If we knew when a thief was coming to rob our home, would we not prepare and lock up? We know that the Bridegroom is coming for His Bride, are we listening to Wisdom, and preparing for that glorious event? The world can offer a great many distractions, and we can feel that we have plenty of time left in order to pay attention to the things we know we should be doing, e.g. listening to the right instruction, receiving the Sacraments, praying for guidance, but we do not. Let us pay attention to the times, for the coming of the Son of Man is getting closer, and He wants all of us to be ready and waiting with full oil lamps ready to enter the Wedding Banquet. We have that blessed Hope, that just as Jesus was raised from the dead, we too will be risen, and caught up with Him into Heaven, to live with Him (our Bridegroom) for all eternity …. we have this Hope and, therefore, need to be ready. Therefore, comfort one another with these words of encouragement. St. Paul, in today’s epistle, makes it clear that we all need to be informed, so that we do not grieve as those do who have no knowledge of the Great Hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Evangelize, so that all may know the Good News, and be ready for the coming of Jesus! Let us spend time each day filling our oil lamps (Holy Spirit is the oil), by spending time with our God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). He speaks to our hearts when we read His Word, His Holy Instructions to those who will search, seek and obey those Holy Instructions that will lead to paths of righteousness, peace and Joy. Let us not be foolish and think we can make up for lost time at the last minute. It is clear by today’s Gospel that God does not see things the same way as the world. Let us not be lukewarm in our Christian walk …. (I’ll go to confession when I have time …. I’m too tired to get up for Mass today, I’ll go next week ….. I know these friends aren’t behaving well, but they’re fun to be with … no-one will notice these paperclips missing from the office, the company is doing well anyway … etc.) If any of this sounds familiar, simplistic as it is, perhaps it is time to seek Wisdom in the lukewarm areas of our lives in order to maintain a sufficient level of oil in our lamps for when the Bridegroom comes for His Glorious Bride. Let us have our lamps full, and be awake and ready. Come Lord Jesus, Come! - Anonymous
