YEAR 10 QUEENSLAND CAMP
As a part of the year 10 program 80
students attended the Queensland
camp/trip from September 13th to
19th 2014. Along with the students
came 8 fabulous staff members from
the college. We all boarded a bus
and started our 24 hour journey to
the Gold Coast where we all took
part in a range of different activities
including attending 3 theme parks
which were: Wet 'n' Wild, SeaWorld
and Movie World. All students and
staff also participated in a day of
surfing and kayaking at Burleigh
Heads. Whilst at camp we also spent
one of our days shopping at Pacific
Fair and Harbour Town. The theme
parks were definitely a highlight for
all the students.
We would like to thank the College
and the teachers who put in so much
time and effort into making this such
a successful and memorable trip for
all the year 10 students who
attended .

PLAN YOUR OWN ENTERPRISE
We would like to congratulate Gillian Abalos, Mitchell Gration and Chrysanthi
Demetriou for being awarded second place in the Victorian Division of the National
Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition. This is nation wide competition with entries
from all education sectors: Government Schools, Catholic Schools and Independent
School. The competition is organised by CPA Australia in conjunction with
Business Educators of Australasia (BEA) which is a national body that supports
teachers of business related subjects.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL CLASS
Congratulations
Last Monday I had the absolute pleasure
of attending the presentation of the Plan
Your Own Enterprise awards for Victoria
and nationally as well. It was absolutely
delightful to see our year 11 Business
Management teams of Gillian, Mitchell
and Chrysanthi being awarded the second
place award for Victoria in the group
category. As a national competition the
awards draw over 1000 entries and
gaining this award is recognition of the
effort made and quality of the final
project. The students worked on the
project during their Business
Management classes with the assistance
and guidance of their practicum teacher,
Mr Shervin Mazaheri Kashani along with
their regular teacher Ms Angela
McKendry. An outstanding effort by all.
BYOD
We have now completed briefings for
both the incoming year 7 families as well
as current year 9 families on the
implementation of Bring Your Own
Device (BYOD) as it will operate within
our College next year. Remaining year
levels with continue with the current
Netbook arrangements for 2015 unless
any student wishes to transfer across at
any point. More information will be
provided to families at other levels should
this be desired. We have gone to a lot of
trouble to ensure our BYOD service is
not only at a quality level, but also that is
can be suitably monitored when any
student is logged on to the school
network and the use of the computer can
be monitored at those times.
Year 12 Celebrations
As a year 12 level completed classes
there was time for a short but memorable
celebration and I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate the current
VCE and VCAL cohort for the manner in
which they conducted themselves through
this. The traditional dress up day saw a
wide variety of costumes, all in good fun.
The final day commenced with a walk as
a year 12 group into the school where
they were greeted by all year 7 students.
The year 12 students then spent some
time viewing a range of highlights of
their year and then completed the
morning with a new innovation for us, the
Long Lunch! The group joined in for a
great celebratory lunch in what was very
much a picnic atmosphere joined by
many of their teachers when available.
Some dancing, many farewells and lots of
memories. Many staff were involved in
bringing the special lunch event together,
however I would like to single out the
staff who organised this and particularly
the Co-ordinators Mr Kelliher and Ms
Massarotto as well as Mr Dedes.
Exams are underway
Yesterday our year 12 students
experienced their first day of the final
exam period and English at VCE is now
behind them. The exams run over the
next two and a half weeks and year 11
and then year 10 exams will follow in
close succession. Apart from exams we
are now well progressed with planning
for next year. Students in current years
10 and 11 have their subjects for next
year and year 9 students progressing to
year 10 will be informed of their
allocations in in the next two weeks. Any
student with any question concerning
allocations should in the first instance
check with Ms Damon in L2.
Reminder – Next Monday
Whilst many families have family
members with a rostered day off next
Monday, I remind our school community
that next Monday is a normal school day
with classes running as usual.
Education Maintenance Allowance
I remind parents again that the Victorian
Government has made a decision to no
longer pay eligible parents an Education
Maintenance Allowance. The decision
has been taken to hand some of this
money over to some schools. We have
received some money in this allocation
and we are currently considering how this
allocation can be most effectively used to
assist needy families in some ways
through school programs, albeit in a very
reduced manner from the previous
system.

PLAN YOUR OWN ENTERPRISE
Students are required to prepare a detailed business plan to respond to a community need. This competition provides the
opportunity for students to develop a business model that includes focusing on feasibility, compliance with appropriate
legislation, marketing and resource management. It’s a real opportunity to provide students with an authentic learning
opportunity.
Gillian, Mitchell and Chrysanthi prepared a business plan for their business – GMC Canteens. Their vision is to serve healthy
lunch options as well as café style beverages. Items including fresh produce and light lunches will range in price to provide
inexpensive choices form students and staff in comfortable surrounds which can also serve as a study area.
Also a big thank you goes to Angela McKendry and Shervin Mazaheri Kashani (student teacher) for supporting our students
with this competition.

ITALY TRIP 2014
The 11 students and 4 staff who went on
the Italy Trip I’m sure would agree that it
was an experience they will remember
forever! We travelled from the south of
Italy(Reggio Calabria) to the north (Milan)
in the short(!!) time that we had. On every
trip we try to add something different to
the previous ones and this time students
attended a Gelati making class in Sorrento
which was fantastic and yes it meant we
got to sample more gelato!! We did a tour
of San Siro Stadium in Milan and also
visited the town of Lucca in Tuscany and
to explore it we hired bikes and rode
around the town.
We made sure
we saw the
tourist
attractions in
the main cities
like: The
Colosseum,
the Vatican
( and yes, we
got to see the
Pope in what
were very
crowded circumstances!), the leaning
tower of Pisa, Pompeii, the Last Supper in
Milan and lots of others – too many to
mention. Homestay in Rome was a
fantastic experience for the students to see
what its like to be a student in Rome for 5
days and to experience family life. Host
families were very accommodating to our
students’ needs and made sure they could
do all possible to make their stay a
memorable one.
Our students got to experience a small
snippet of school life at Il Liceo Manfredi
Azzariti and very quickly made
comparisons to our school! One of them
being that school
finishes at
12.30pm! If they
are late to school
they are locked
out! On our trip
we sampled lots
of Italian food
and tried to vary
the different types of pasta and pizza we
could eat and sometimes experimented
with the local food. Another highlight of
the trip was our day in Molochio in
Southern Italy(Reggio Calabria) where we
met locals, visited the Primary school and
made some connections, had a picnic
lunch up in the mountains, played soccer
and let’s not forget the banquet dinner that
was prepared by the families of this very
small town. The food was based on
traditional Calabrese dishes with their own
local produce being used as the ingredients
– Masterchef at its best!
The trip provided the students with
different opportunites and it was great
to see them willingly trying different
things and experiences. I am sure they
will have some fantastic memories of
the 2014 Italy trip(even if it is about
how heavy their suitcases were!!) and I
encourage all students to consider being
part of the 2016 Italy trip!
A big thanks to the staff involved: Mr
Pell, Mr Dedes and Ms Johnson your
assistance on this trip was greatly
appreciated. Grazie! To the parents of
the students who participated thank you
very much for your support in the trip
and I hope it will be a topic of
conversation for many years to come!
To the students, you did really well and
although at times we were all exhausted
we really did so much in such little
time. I hope you got to bring home
more of Italy that fits in a suitcase!!

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR ITALIAN STUDENTS HOMESTAY FROM ROME
IN SEPTEMBER 2015
Are you interested in hosting a student from our sister school in Rome “Il liceo Manfredi Azzariti” for 5 nights in September
2015?
We are looking for families from Taylors Lakes Secondary College to assist in accommodating students next year.
If you are interested, please fill in the details below and return either to Mrs Deluca in H2 or to the General Office.
It is probably advisable for any students thinking about participating in the 2016 Italy trip to be part of this event as it would be
great for families to reciprocate the exchange.
All students study English at the school so language should not be a problem!
I/we are interested in hosting a student from “Il liceo Manfredi Azzariti” during September 2015.

YEAR 10 CRIME & PUNISHMENT EXCURSION
ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW
In the last week of term 3, three year ten classes taught by Mr De
Bernardi, Mr Whitefield, and Ms Earl ventured out on an
excursion to the Magistrates Court and the Old Melbourne Gaol.
Students listened to a number of court cases varying from drink
driving, sexual assaults and family violence, to give them more of
an understanding of how courts operate. It was a very interesting
experience and quite confronting. After the courts, students
walked to RMIT cafeteria and enjoyed a lovely lunch outside.
The second part of the day involved the students visiting Old
Melbourne Gaol. Students were guided through the Watch House
and were treated like prisoners, giving them an insight into how it
would have been back in the 19th century. It was a really
interesting and fun experience! It gave students some background
knowledge about how the legal system works and what a possible
career in law could be like.
By Caity Demaio and Merisa Catic 10B
A big congratulations goes to NAOMI FANANI (2ND PRIZE) and KULJIT KAUR BAINS (COMMENDED) who were
successful with their TEXTILES bag projects at this year's ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW SCHOOL COMPETITIONS.
There was stiff competition this year with multiple entries from many schools, so the girls did extremely well to gain an award.

Environmental Awareness Society (EAS) update
A huge thank-you to all who supported the RSPCA cupcake day – we raised a total of $328!
A special thanks to Ms Norwood and Ms Mildenhall who took time and money out at home to bake delicious and creative
cupcakes. Also to Ms Johnson and the Home Economics team for letting us take over S3 and Mrs Drenen who assisted during
the important baking process!
Last, but certainly not least, the passionate members of the EAS who gave up their lunch times and afterschool to help plan,
bake, ice and sell cupcakes. Woolworths at Taylors Lakes Shopping Centre generously donated ingredients for the EAS which
certainly made the day a resounding success.
Onto the next project! If you wish to get involved or have a project you would like to run, please come to S5 during Thursday
lunchtimes.

In terms 1 and 4 the College has a Sunsmart Policy in effect for all Physical Education practical classes.
Term 4 has always been warm and the UV rays are much stronger at this time of year. This policy
requires students to either wear a hat or put on sunscreen in front of their teacher. If your child has an
allergy to regular sunscreen, they may bring their own and apply it in front of their teacher.
Thank you for your co-operation.

MELBOURNE WRITERS’ FESTIVAL 2014
On Wednesday the 27th August, the Taylors Lakes
Secondary College Book Club went to the Melbourne
Writers’ Festival. The excitement in the air was clear as we
gathered together at the station and talked in hushed voices,
not wanting to interrupt the other people. The experience
was almost surreal as we arrived at Flinders Station and
saw the busy bustle of the city. It was such a different scene
to our school. The first event we went to was a talk by
author A.J Betts. It was such a fun and enlightening
experience that ended too soon. We then walked to the
Immigration Museum where we did a workshop with
author Will Kostaskis. We were also allowed to explore the
museum which was so exhilarating and interesting since
none of us had been there before. To end a fantastic day we
went to a conference with authors Claire Zorn and Penny
Tangey. At Book Club we all love reading books so we all
enjoyed getting a chance to meet some of the authors of our
favourite books. We want to thank Ms Earl and all of the
people who made our excursion such a memorable one.

LIBRARY NEWS
The tenth Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
(VPRC) concluded on September 12th with 254
students reading at least 15 books. At the
culmination of the PRC, students had recorded
online 7,711 books, a wonderful achievement and
indicative of the strong reading culture that has
developed amongst our students. Our 2014 VPRC
Top 10 readers will be announced at this year’s
Presentation Awards ceremony, although it is clear
from the results that some of our students have once
again shown themselves to be avid, passionate
readers.
Congratulations to the students who successfully
engaged with the 2014 VPRC as well as to the
Library and English staff whose commitment and
work ethic have contributed greatly to this
enhancement program.
Children’s Book Week (CBW) is a celebration of
literature and reading. Our library organised a variety

Mambourin Enterprises Year 10 Pathways Development
Program (PDP) Community Project
On Thursday 9th October, the PDP class ventured out to Mambourin (Braybrook),
a local disability centre catering for approximately 80 clients. The PDP class
was involved in upgrading the facility by way of painting buildings and general
gardening and mulching. The students undertook the tasks with a great work
ethic and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to communicate and integrate with
the clients. This is one of many projects Taylors Lakes SC has participated in
with Mambourin Enterprises. On the previous Tuesday, the same PDP class
invited 8 of the clients to Watergardens and they participated in a game of Ten
Pin Bowling which was enjoyed by all.
