Deciding to study overseas is not an easy decision; it can be challenging, rewarding and life changing with many of the friendships your child makes lasting a life time. New Zealand has a long and proud history of welcoming international students and is considered one of the finest destinations for international students to study in the world.

TEMA is a management company that works with some of the most exceptional educational organisations in New Zealand. We have brought together some of the finest Catholic schools New Zealand has to offer. These schools have Christian faith at their core and represent a wide range of Catholic teaching denominations including, Marist, Dominican, Lasallian and Our Lady of the Mission, where each student is considered a special and valued member of their Christian community.

All these Catholic schools have very unique characteristics and specialisations which provide students with wonderful sporting, cultural and academic choices. Each school has highly qualified and experienced staff that are committed to helping students achieve success in life and study. They provide an outstanding range of academic programmes with excellent academic results achieved in national examinations at every level.

All schools within the Catholic group are signatories to the New Zealand Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. This accreditation gives you the assurance that there are dedicated people and systems in place to ensure the very highest level of pastoral care is provided while studying in New Zealand.

We look forward to working with your child to ensure that their journey is made as rewarding and personally fulfilling as possible. I encourage you to experience New Zealand and some of the best education in the world, where your child’s development and success is our highest priority.

Comparable in size to Great Britain, Colorado and Japan, New Zealand has a population of about 4.4 million – making it one of the world’s least crowded countries – approximately 16 people per square kilometre. This makes New Zealand a wonderful country for thousands of students who already consider New Zealand a fantastic place to receive a quality education.

All New Zealand’s universities are ranked in the top 500 in the world with many specialisations such as food technology, veterinary science and many business subjects ranked in the top twenty in the world. New Zealand’s primary and secondary systems are regularly ranked in top 10 in the world. A recent survey of the 40 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, New Zealand ranks eighth in The Learning Curve Global Education Report, published by education firm Pearson. In the Social Progress Index, New Zealand tops the world on indicators of personal rights and freedoms, and comes in the top four for water and sanitation, access to schooling and tertiary education and tolerance and inclusion of minority groups. NZ EDUCATION SYSTEM

Education in New Zealand begins at five years of age and primary school lasts for eight years – often the last two years of primary school are in a separate Intermediate School. However, some primary schools go from years 0 to 8.

Secondary school or College begins at Year 9 and lasts for five years until Year 13 (students are generally aged 13-17). The New Zealand school year runs from the beginning of February to mid-December and is divided into four terms with each term being roughly 9-10 weeks long.

The New Zealand Curriculum has eight learning Areas: English, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Science, Health and Physical Education. The Arts, (which includes: Drama, Dance, Music, and Visual Arts), Technology, (which includes: Digital, Wood, Computer Studies, Design and Visual Communication, Metal and Fabric) and Languages which includes: Mandarin, Latin, Spanish and French.

Running through each of the learning areas the New Zealand curriculum lists seven core values; Excellence, Innovation Inquiry and Curiosity, Equity, Community Participation, Ecological Sustainability, Integrity and Respect.

NCEA EXAMINATION SYSTEMNew Zealand has an internationally recognised and unified system of qualifications called the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) which is controlled by a government organisation called the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)

At secondary level the certificate has three academic levels- Level 1 at Year 11, Level 2 at Year 12, and Level 3 at Year 13. The examinations are a mixture of school administered tests that are monitored nationally and centrally set examinations which students take at the end of the year.

There are particular requirements including passes in Mathematics and English for University Entrance.

ACCOMMODATIONEach school can provide accommodation options to suit your child’s needs and depending on your individual circumstances (student’s age, length of stay, group tour or individual), this might include homestay or boarding accommodation.

HOMESTAYHomestay is when a student lives with a New Zealand family in their home. This is a great way to learn about New Zealand culture and rapidly improve your child’s English language. All homestay accommodation is assessed for suitability by each school. Applications for homestay accommodation should be made well in advance of arrival in New Zealand.

Students choosing this option should be prepared for differences compared to living with their own family. Students will have their own room and meals provided and may be expected to help with some of the household duties. There will also be normal family house rules to follow, e.g. limits on telephone use or watching TV however the types of rules vary between homestay families.

Every school will carefully match each homestay family as closely as possible to the requirements of a particular student.

DESIGNATED CAREGIVERWhere a student stays with a designated caregiver, the students’ parents will have to provide evidence to prove they are a “bona fide caregiver”, either an adult relative or close family friend of the student’s family. The Designated caregiver must sign an Indemnity Form and follow the rules and obligations of homestays.

BOARDING ACCOMMODATIONBoarding is when you live at the school, in a school hostel. Boarding fosters a sense of independence and self-confidence. It provides for the development of personal and communal responsibilities within a structured environment. Whilst boarding can never replicate your own home, New Zealand boarding residences are characterised by having a strong family spirit and providing the highest quality of care, support and supervision. Boarders also receive tremendous support from each other frequently leading to lifelong friendships.

Her main sporting activity was hockey where she made some good friends. Her personal comment when leaving was that “JPC students are very friendly and there is a lot that one can do both at the school and in the Rotorua region. I also enjoy riding my bike not only to school but also around the city. My English has improved a lot since I arrived. It helps to learn the language by taking part in the activities.”
