DATA LOGGING : TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY.

SEMESTER 1 (2011/2012)

Experiment 1: Temperature and Humidity.

Objective: To determine the changes of temperature and humidity of human hands through

sweating.

Introduction:

Expose of our body to high temperature can lead to an increase in body temperature. Blood

vessels near to skin’s surface dissipate heat well. Therefore blood flow in skin rises in cases of

increased body temperature. To help heat dissipation, sweat production increases

significantly. It is done by over 3 million sweat glands spread throughout the skin. Sweat

production and evaporation is essential to keeping body temperature, but it can lead to

dehydration if water loss is not replaced by drinking.

This experiment we measure the effect of increasing hand temperature on heat dissipation

throught sweat evaporation.

Apparatus : Data Logger device, temperature sensor, humidity sensor, plastic beg and rubber

band.

Procedure:

1. Attach a temperature sensor to the finger of your right arm, and humidity sensor put at

outside. Or to take the humidity in room temperature.

2. Start the discovery either from the discovery panel or from discovery software click

the run button to on the left toolbar.

3. Follow the temperature in your fingertips, registered on the computer’s monitor, till it

stabilization. Take in 5 minutes before enter the hand cover by plastic Bag. Same with

humidity sensor.

4. Cover the hand holding temperature sensor, with a plastic beg.

5. Place the humidity sensor inside the plastic bag.

6. Tie the plastic bag to prevent airflow into and out of the beg.

7. Take 10 minutes.

8. After that, remove the plastic beg.

9. Take the temperature and humidity in 5 minutes when the plastic beg is remove.

10. Then, by connecting it to the computer, the data inside the data logger can be viewed

and the results is as follows.

11. Result:

5 minutes before covering plastic beg

5 minutes after covering plastic beg

10 minutes covering plastic beg

Analysis:

From the graph above , we can see that, there are two lines of graph it means that, it has two

types of sensor which are temperature and humidity the red line represent to Temperature and

blue line represent to humidity. There are three part that represent three condition of

temperature and humidity. The first part is the reading of data of hand before cover. The

second part is the data of hand while covered by plastic beg. And the last is the data of the

hand after covered.

Beside that, we also can analyst the graph. When Temperature is higher the humidity is lower

so we can stated here, temperature is inversely proportional to the humidity. When the

temperature sensor in hand before cover it with plastic beg it will exposed to surrounding and

the temperature will influenced by room temperature. This is because air condition in our

room will effect the temperature when uncover it and our temperature is increased. Then the

humidity will increase when we cover it in plastic beg, this is because our hand now start to

sweat.

Discussion:

Temperature is heat that can be cold or hot while the humidity is the ratio of the amount of

moisture in the air. From this experemint we have conduct three part it are before covered by

plastig beg, covered by plastic beg and after covered by plastic beg.

During 5 minutes before we cover hand by plastic beg, the temperature we get is higher than

covered by plastic beg it is because temperature increse when the surrounding is drying and

speed of wind is increase we can say that, the speed of wind increase because the room now

suiz on the aircond the air flow is cooler and give the humidity lower . We can relate the

humidity with the temperature. Now the humidity is lower while the temperature is higher.

The result also same at the 5 minutes after covering the hand by plastic beg. Because the

temperature at plastic is different with surrounding and our hand will adapt the surrounding

temperature.

During 10 minutes, that we covered our hand with plastic beg, we put the temperature and

humidity sensor together into plastic beg then tie it to avoid air from surrounding flow into

plastic beg. Our hand now start to feel hot and sweat gland will produce sweat to cold the

hand temperature. Now the air in plastic beg is warm and it can evaporate more moisture into

it.that why the humidity is higher in plastic beg and the temperature is lower at our palm in

order of production sweat.

After conducting this experiment , we found that there are a lot of advantages of using data

logging device over the manual data collecting method. The advantage is measurement is

always taken at the right time. Unlike human, the device will not miss to take a reading and

data logger can collect data more often even at every second while humans normally cannot

nobody is perfect and always make a mistake and miss something that important. Besides

that, Human always has parallex error.this is because during conduct the experiment we will

take turn and it will easily to make the mistake. For example humans can make errors when

they read the temperature of a thermometer and the result is always not very accurate. But

when used this all the usual mistakes made by human will be reduce, it is because this device

can get more accurate and precise data. Not only that, graphs and tables of results also can be

produced automatically by the data logging software since the data is available straight away

to be analyzed by the computer. In that case, it allows data to be shared easily among students

and allow the data to be analyzed much more easily than data collected by hand. Furthermore,

it will help us from plotting data by manual. Moreover, data logger can store many data and

collect data then save the data in memory.we also can save the data long time in our

computer.

This device also has their disadvantage. The data logger is very sensity toward surrounding

condition. And we should avoid it because it will affect our reading and result will not

accurate. In addition this data logger should be diagnosis and check their function to avoid

from broken. After that this data logger cost is very expensive then need more care to avoid it

broken.

Question:

1. What is the effect of covering the hand with a plastic bag:

One: On the humidity level measured inside the bag?

The humidity level measured inside the bag is increase.

Two: On the temperature level measured at the fingertips?

The temperature level measured at the fingertips in decrease.

2. What causes the changes in the temperature of your fingertips during the experiment?

During the experiment, the water vapor occurs or the fingertips are sweating and

change the temperature.

3. Did you observe any changes in the humidity of your skin during the experiment?

Explain your observation.

When the fingertips inside the plastic bag, the large amount of water vapor are occurs.

That mean the humidity inside the bag is increase. Then when the fingertips are taken

out from the bag, the humidity is decrease.

4. Why did the humidity in the bag decrease immediately after the removal of bag?

Because of the amount of water vapor is decrease.

5. What is the source of the water accumulated in the bag?

From the hand that is sweating.

6. What happens to the water accumulated in the plastic bag after the removal of the bag

from the hand?

Water accumulated decrease.

7. What can you conclude from this experiment regarding:

One: Warming up of your hand held inside the plastic bag?

When the hand warming up held inside the plastic bag with the close surrounding, the

hand is sweat and the humidity is increase. Then the temperature is decrease.

Two: The process of heat loss from your hand after removal of the plastic bag?

The rate of heat loss through sweating is very much determined by the surrounding

air’s humidity. If the air is contains a large amount of water vapor, sweat won’t or will

only slowly evaporate.

Conclusion :

After conducting this experiment we can conclude that the temperature will increase when

humidity is deacreased. And humidity will increase when covered by plastic beg. It is because

our hand start to feel warm and our palm start to sweat in order to deacrease the temperature.

Our experiment is verify.
