Fill The Bag

The Thanksgiving and Christmas Season are fast approaching! In this season of thankfulness and re-membering our Savior, join the Friday Addition community as we get involved in our community and share Christ's love with residents in nursing homes.

Starting November 7, we will have a school wide competition to gather items that we will use during the Open House (Dec. 12th) to make care packages for a local nursing home. For each item that you bring in, you can fill in one square on your class’s candy cane. The bags and candy cane posters will be lo-cated in the hallway downstairs on your way to the K-7th lunch room.

You will have opportunity to bring in items through December 5. During the Open House on December 12, we will be filling the bags and making Christmas cards.

On December 19th, we will meet at a local nursing home and deliver the bags and sing Christmas car-ols. (time and location TBD based on participation) We hope that you and your family will be able to par-ticipate as we seek to be a "light" in our community.

Items collecting:

1. small tissue packages

2. chapstick/ lotion

3. hand sanitizer

4. verse cards (these can be found at Family Christian Stores)

5. mints (containers count as one item)

6. hard candies (bags count as one item)

7. pen/paper

OUTING

This is a program at the MCC Planetarium on. There will be two showings of this planetarium show. The first starts at 1:30pm and the second show at 2:10pm. There have been a few cancellations on the sign-ups so a few slots are available for this Nov 24 outing. If you would like to sign up, please go to the Scrip table Friday morning.

Open House

The culmination of the first semester for K-7th grades will be celebrated with an OPEN HOUSE in the gym on December 12 immediately following classes (4-5pm). Take a look at some of the wonderful work students have been accomplishing over the semester! Enjoy music, food and fellowship! Help pre-pare gift bags for nursing home residents (8th-12th students will be assisting). Talk to teachers! (Not all high school teachers may available during this time.) This is also a great time to bring Grandparents or other families! Mark it on your calendar! It is a great way to end the first semester!

If you have - ever wanted to pack shoe boxes full of Christmas goodies for children in need for Operation Christmas Child - but have never had the opportunity, now is your chance!

Acacia Murphy is hosting a Packing Party on Nov 15 from 2-4:30pm featuring balloons, snacks, and of course, packing shoe boxes. Each participant will be asked to fundraise for supplies and shipping costs; shoe boxes, wrapping paper, snacks, etc. will be provided. Each shoebox costs $7 for shipping, and we will need supplies for the packing such as toys, school supplies, and toothbrushes. You can ask family, friends, and other people you know for donations. It costs $20 to sponsor a whole box and $10 dollars for a share.

If interested or in need of more information or any kind of help with getting sponsors (forms etc.) contact Acacia at 616-990-0181 or email at [email protected].

P.S. Our goal is 100 boxes, so the more the merrier!

OPERTION CHRISTMAS CHILD

BARB BOERSEN—KINDERGARTEN

We have had another great month in kindergarten. The kids have been working hard on several

projects that parents will get to see at the open house at the end of the semester. The kids are

eager to take these projects home.

This past month we spent time looking at God’s Rules for Living and how living within these rules

brings peace and joy. Our Unit will continue into the first part of November since we have missed

one week. Then, as we move into mid-November, we will be thinking about four different aspects

of prayer. We will spend a week with each of the following types of prayer: adoration, confession,

thanksgiving and supplication (requests).

As we have shared the colored objects over the month of October, we have been able to do some

sorting using Venn Diagrams. In November we will finish our color sharing and then continue as

follows:

Oct. 31: Something orange or black.

Nov. 7: Anything they want!

Nov. 14: Something that fits inside the palm of your hand

Nov. 21: Tool used by your parent to do a job.

Hello! All the students should now have their newest forms and should be practicing at home. They are doing great! Reminder on testing: Students who were with the spring/summer program at Crusader's main studio will be testing next month. All other students will be testing in February. Students who do not put forth effort in class and are not able to demonstrate the necessary requirements to achieve the next belt will not be permitted to test and will receive a failing grade for martial arts. Sparring Gear: Sparring gear is required for any student red belt and higher, and it is part of their tests. Some students are at pur-ple and blue belt. This is the time to seriously start thinking about getting your sparring gear ordered. If they do not have their equipment, they fail that part of the test. We can offer sparring gear kits for $84.80. Each kit in-cludes head, chest, hands, feet, mouth piece protection and groin protection for the men. This is a huge savings of $37.10! New Location: We are in the process of possibly leasing a building in Zeeland - right on Elm Street across from Huntington Bank. We will keep you posted on the results. For now classes are being held at First Baptist Church on Mon-days from 4:30pm - 6:00pm for ages 8 and up. We will separate the times and ages once the class grows lar-ger. Students who attend First Baptist Church AND Friday Addition will be eligible to test every 3 months versus once a year. 8th - 12 graders in Friday Addition will be testing every 3 months. Please call the main studio for individual and family pricing.

It is a privilege to spend time with your children each week. They are a joy to be around and always bring a smile to my face.

In Art, we have been exploring the concepts of lines and primary colors. We learned about Piet Mondrian and then tried our hand at copying his famous artwork. November will find us creat-ing artwork focused on God’s handiwork of plants. The children will be sculpting and painting pieces with pumpkins, sunflowers, and leaves.

It is always exciting to study God’s amazing creation. We will turn our attention to the study of plants. A life cycle of a plant, parts of a plant, and leaves will be some of our topics of explora-tion.

Math is a fun time in first grade. We will continue playing games to learn and/or review math concepts and skills. So far, they have learned two games using a deck of cards to sequence numbers and strengthen their understanding of greater than or less than. We will add some games to work on addition this next month. I have had several students tell me that they don’t like card games, but that these are fun!

We will travel farther from home as we gallop the globe. Countries in South America and Africa are our destinations this month.

The kids are doing wonderfully learning Spanish vocabulary. They love to use the greetings, polite responses, and animal names we have practiced so far. We will add numbers and colors to their repertoire this month.

In November, we are reminded that we have much to be thankful for. As we reflect on how God has richly blessed our families, I wanted to take the time to let you know that I am thankful for each of your children in my class this year. Happy Thanksgiving!

We continue working with keyword outlines for fact and fiction articles. Some of the stu-dents are getting quite creative with rewriting articles using the added dress-ups we are covering. Book reports are due any time before Christmas break. I have forms for the various types of non-fiction books. Please encourage your students to ask questions regarding pages they complete at home in their grammar books. The 8th grade spent time writing stories from a series of pictures—very interesting!

High school finished taking notes on articles and will be organizing them and making an outline. Macbeth is being covered this month—a lot of fun to act out in class. A second non-fiction book report is due before Christmas break.

Human Anatomy

After looking at the different types of muscle under the microscope and learning how a muscle contracts,

we move on to learning the names, location, & function of approximately 80 of the roughly 640 muscles

in the body. Yes, there is a lot to memorize but it's only 1/8th of our muscles! After we finish the mus-

cles, we begin a detailed study of the nervous system. We start by looking at the cellular level & then at a

nerve. Next we will learn how a signal travels along a nerve to send a message to another part of the

body, a complicated but fascinating process. Hopefully, students will have a new appreciation for God's

creation of humans & another reason to give thanks this month. Happy Thanksgiving!

General Science

Our month begins by looking at the history of life and the methods used to study it. We will touch on ar-

chaeology and how objects are dated. We will also discuss ways to test the reliability of a "find.” We fin-

ish the month studying the foundations of geology. Hopefully, students will find new reasons to be

amazed at God's creation and have more reasons for giving thanks this month. Happy Thanksgiving!

K~1 Some of our warm-up activities have included In The Doghouse, White Bear, Pi-

rate's Gold Tag, and Hounds and Rabbits which have focused on running, dodging, tag-ging, stretching, strategizing, and spacial awareness. Our skill learning included hand ball play which practiced the skills of striking, visual tracking, manual dexterity, and

footwork. The second skill we focused on was overhand throwing. After practicing with bean bags and tennis balls, we played some all-time favorite throwing games called

Clean-up-the-Yard and Rooftop Shot. Our fitness portion incorporated throwing and dodging with muscular endurance and strength. During the game of Nerf Tag when the students were tagged, they had to perform a certain exercise in order to be freed and

rejoin the game.

2~4 Our introductory activities have included the games Pass-n-Sting, Fruit Salad, and

Bombardment which have focused on aerobic warm-up, running, dodging, tagging and accuracy throwing. Our fitness time included exercises such as squats, reverse crunches, push-ups, trunk stretches, grinders, inside leg-lifts, seat lifts, and corner

stretch. We also reviewed the locomotor skills of jumping and hopping. We practiced the skill of overhand throwing with the games Rooftop Shot and Space Invaders. Our

soccer unit concluded with lead-up games Four-Goal Soccer and Rotation Soccer which incorporated all the skills of soccer including passing, dribbling, shooting, and goal keep-ing. In the first session of our basketball unit, the students were introduced to the skills

of ball handling and dribbling. We concluded with the dribbling games Basketball Pi-

rates and Dribble Tag.

Hello FA Parents!

These 2 months of teaching Spanish to your kids have been fantastic! The kids are great students. They

work really well in class, and they have a desire and curiosity for learning a new language. They are

reviewing and learning new vocabulary, conversational phrases, and some grammar. Some of the topics

they have learned are Colores (Colors), Números (Numbers), Calendario (Calendar: Days of the week

and Months of the year), Familia (Family). In conversational Spanish, they are getting familiar with how

to introduce themselves and greet in Spanish. The younger grades are learning basic words that will help

them to communicate better in class and with other people. One of the activities we did was a Cultural

Day. Normally the last Friday of each month I teach the kids cultural facts, traditions and differences

from the Hispanic cultures and the rest of the World. For September, I talked about my country: Costa

Rica. I brought different items that the kids tried on, touched and played with. They were so interested

about my culture that I did not have enough time to answer all their questions J. Here are some pictures

so you all can see our Passport Adventure: Around the World: Exploring New Countries and their Cul-

tures. This Friday, the 31st, the Kids are going to learn about Mexico and the celebration of: “El Día de

los Muertos.”

Thank you for encouraging your kids in this journey of learning a new language!

Besides briefly learning about underwater basket weaving, the Difference class is continuing through the book The Master Plan of Evangelism. Our time in class has been focused on following the footsteps of Jesus and how we can apply his principles to our lives today. Most recently we have been working on a fundraiser that will get the entire school involved. Our class researched multiple different causes and chose to help raise money for the Lakeshore Pregnancy Center of Holland. The students are very passionate and excited to get this fundraiser underway for next semester, but they will need YOUR help! As we continue to piece together the details of this wonderful community project, please keep this fundraiser on your radar for next se-mester. Our students can't wait to bless this organization with the love of Friday Addi-tion.

2nd - 6th Grade Science

Looking Back:

Each day, students spent the first few minutes of class time examining, measuring, and documenting the decay process in their Rotting Fruit Jar experiments. Some fruit are displaying greater signs of deterioration than others.

Our seed dissection showed students that God provided everything that the “baby” plant needs to grow. Students learned the difference between a monocot and di-cot plant. In honor of Fire Safety Week (and our school-wide fire drill), we discov-ered what fire needs to burn. Also this past month, students studied and observed worm anatomy, how worms relate to their environment through sensory receptors, and how worms benefit plants by fertilizing and aerating soil.

Looking Ahead:

As we continue to look at the remarkable world God created for us, our observa-tions and experiments will demonstrate air pressure, how clouds form, heavy weather, lightening, and thunderstorms.

7th Grade Science

Looking Back:

In our Balance in Nature lessons, we discovered how different factors affect seed growth, examined the 4 natural cycles that recycle the elements of the earth (nitrogen, decay, carbon/oxygen, and water), participated in a predator/prey simu-lation to demonstrate natural controls in the environment, and introduced the skill of taking notes from a text book using Tree/Branch Outlining.

Looking Ahead:

November begins our study on Weather. Our text book states: Since the begin-ning of time, man has been interested in the weather. God’s Word shows us that God created the earth and the atmosphere and is in control of the weather. Since we are continually affected by the weather, it would be helpful to have an under-standing of what things make up weather and how they work together. Some of the objectives are to name the main elements of weather and illustrate how tem-perature affects weather, explain wind and air pressure, describe the different air masses and the three basic cloud types, and describe the characteristics of differ-ent storms.

Oh, how I love writing, and what fun it is teaching the 5th and 6th graders all about God’s gift of written language! In October, we added new “dress-ups” to our writing each week. We’ve covered all six now: strong verbs, “ly” adverbs, quality adjectives, “who/which” clauses, “because” clauses, and other adverbial clauses (beginning with when, where, while, as, since, if, or although).

Throughout November, we’ll be learning about six different ways of opening our sentences, in order to make our paragraphs more interesting. These will include: subject, prepositional phrase, “ly” adverbs, “ing” words, clausal openings, and VSS (very short sen-tences).

It is exciting to watch the students improve in their writing

week after week. My hope is that you are seeing this at

home as well. I appreciate the students’ enthusiastic class

participation, and most everyone is doing a thorough job of

completing the homework each week as well. Thank you,

parents, for all of your at-home support!

Our study of the instruments of the orchestra continues as we learn about the Brass Family and the Percussion Family. It's fun to see the students respond to the instru-ments they have never heard or seen before. I have been able to bring a few instru-ments along with me so they could actually see and touch them and see the intricate way in which instruments are constructed.

In November I will be able to bring quite a few percussion instruments, and we'll work on playing some rhythms together as a class. I know that it will be noisy that day!! All along the way, I have been showing some creative performances of the popular song "Let it go." We have heard an arrangement for Strings and another for Woodwinds. I also will be showing versions for Brass and Percussion. This helps students hear these instrument families with a song that most of them know.

We have moved on from an in depth study of Creation as the foundation for a Christian Worldview and have begun to discuss and consider the Fall as impacting the goodness of creation. This is when we really begin to consider how people around us answer questions about what is wrong with the world and how it can be fixed. We know from TV and Radio commercials right now that all politicians think they have the answers to what is wrong with the world. Ultimately, they would realize the foolishness of some their answers if they understood the real, underlying issue of the presence of sin due to the Fall of man. The answer really does begin with Christ and the redemption we find in Him. Once we start there, solutions for the world around us make more sense. As we continue to build the foundations for these ideas in our class, we will become equipped to consider our culture and how the Truth of Christ can really speak to our modern world.

You may be hearing some news terms around your house these days. Your children should be able to explain scarcity and opportunity cost; they probably experience these things every day. We practiced bartering and saw how much more efficiently trade hap-pens when we use money.

With 5 weeks left we will begin to look at production and how to improve it. We will also discuss market price, costs and profits, inflation and the GNP. By the end of the semes-ter we will be ready to put some of these concepts to work through the experience of a class project.

Stay tuned! More to come!

We are wrapping up the microscopic world and entering into the macroscopic! We have covered the first two Kingdoms: Monera and Protista. Now we are moving on to the third Kindgom, Fungi. This past week the students have been growing mold which they will bring in, and we will look at up close under the microscopes. Upon conclusion of K. Fungi, we will start discussing the chemistry of life and more details concerning the cell. Students have learned many new biological vocabulary words, and we have tried our best to understand the meanings instead of "just" memorizing. One of the tools we have used in order to understand vocabulary is the game "Taboo." Students have made the taboo cards, and we have reinforced the terms in class by playing this game. I pray that as we continue to dive into the science of studying life, students will have a greater appreciation for our Creator and the incredible world He has created!
