Issues concerning High Holy Day services Holding seats: e Ritual Committee and its subcommittee for planning High Holy Day services have received conflicting requests concerning holding seats available for late-arriving congregants. Some say that if they honor the attempts by others to hold seats, then their families can’t sit together. Others protest that if their seats are not held, then their families are unable to sit together. We have decided to request that you DO NOT hold seats. We observe that if you come early enough, you’ll have no trouble finding seats where you can sit together, and if you come later, there are generally sections in which sufficient seats are still available. Ushers: We could use more ushers. Please contact Bob Altman, chair of the ushers committee, to volunteer. Electronic communications: Please turn off cell phones, pagers, and other electronics at services, unless required for emergency purposes. Sound system, temperature: Often, during services, there are requests to alter the sound system, change the temperature of the auditorium, or make other changes to the environment. Since such changes have halachic implications, if you have such a request, please find Harold Gelfand and ask him to discuss it with Rabbi Netter. Perfumes and colognes: Many congregants are allergic to these, and their allergies are particularly provoked by large numbers of other congregants using them during the holidays. It should be noted that for Yom Kippur, their use is traditionally banned as part of our “affliction of our souls.” Please abstain from the use of perfumes and colognes.

In just days we will be transforming the Lippa auditorium into a sacred space large enough to accommodate our entire community on Rosh Hashanah. What is it that makes Rosh Hashanah more compelling to American Jews than Shabbat, or Sukkot, or Pesah, or any other Jewish holiday, that so many of our members come for Rosh Hashanah that we have to move into the

auditorium?

ere are sociological reasons, of course. Everyone at work, or at school, expect Jews to be in shul on Rosh Hashanah. We never have to explain ourselves in defense of an absence. Even our non-Jewish neighbors know when it is Rosh Hashanah.

ere are social reasons, to be sure. Even in a synagogue with no assigned seats we are accustomed to sit in the same seats, year after year, service after service. Being surrounded with the same people year after year increases the sense of community and extended family for which we yearn by being a member of a synagogue. at is why there is so much talking while the holy words of the Torah and Haftarah are being read from the bimah. It’s not easy to catch up on a whole year in just a few words.

But I think the number one reason we come to shul, dressed in our nest, and sit with the mahzor for so many hours, is because of one line in the mahzor. is one line is inserted in the beginning of the Amidah for the entire ten days of the High Holiday season. We come for this one line, which contains all of the theology of Rosh Hashanah:

Zokhr e inu l ’ ha y y im , m e l e k h h a f e i t z b a h a y y i m , v’khotveinub’seferhahayyim, l’ma-ankha Elohim hayyim. Remember us for life, Sovereign who delights in life, and inscribe us in the Book of Life, for Your sake, God of life.

Rosh Hashanah marks for each of us the milestone of having achieved another year of life. We ock to shul on Rosh Hashanah because we love life, we crave more life, we pray for one more year of life. Each phrase of this line focuses us on the fundamentals of Jewish theology.

Remember us for life. We all want to be remembered, and remembered well, by God. By this we mean that God, into whose hand our body and soul are deposited, should bless us with life. Sovereign who delights in life. God has innite power, the unbounded power of the ultimate king of kings, but God is a king who delights in life. God loves life as much as we do.

Cholent POTFrom the . . .

Otherwise, God would have created the World to Come, put us in it, and bypassed this World altogether. Only in this world is there human life as we know it. And inscribe us in the book of life. We recognize that life and death is ultimately God’s decision, not ours. We acknowledge, however begrudgingly, that much is beyond our control. at is why we appeal to God’s love of life to keep us in life. For Your sake, God of life. is is the ultimate hutzpah: we are not the only ones who benet from our being alive. God also craves relationship with us, seeks us out for intimacy, rejoices in our successes and cries with us during our sorrows. So we remind God: You’ll miss us when we’re gone. Give us both another year together.

is is the reason I know I will see you all in shul on Rosh Hashanah. We desperately love life. Together, alone, we will pray for life. May you be so inscribed.

It gives me great pleasure to share with you a few items of accomplishment by your Board of Trustees and various committees. First and foremost, we have successfully negotiated a contract with Harvey Brenner to become our new Executive Director. is is the result of months of hard work by the Search Committee and negotiating team.

After publicizing our need and interviewing three serious candidates, the Committee felt overwhelmingly, that Harvey has the best qualications to serve our needs. Harvey comes with PLENTY of experience, specically being an executive director of synagogues prior to ours.

Harvey is planning his move to Amherst as I am writing this article, and I am excited to have him join our community; and in particular our temple family. I thank our Search Committee members and especially our chair, Judith Brownstein, for its dedicated and superb eorts. In addition, I thank Jon Dandes and Harvey Sanders for successfully negotiating a contract between Harvey and our shul.

Also, Harvey Sanders and Steve Bengart have secured contracts for the purchase of two houses, along with their properties, adjacent to the current home of Congregation B’Nai Shalom. As you may recall, our master plan for Project Beit Tillah has been focused on building a new facility on those grounds located on North Forest Rd. is will go a long way in seeing our hopes for this endeavor come to fruition.

Lastly, our new synagogue directory is going to print. I think you will nd it useful and helpful in staying current with your temple family members’ emails, phone numbers and addresses. My deep appreciation goes to Linda Boxer and her committee for their splendid eorts and results.

I would be very remiss if I did not thank Cantor Mark Spindler and all of our volunteer and lay leaders who stepped up to the plate and lled in for the Rabbi during his recent trip to Israel and vacation. It has been my experience that whenever we as a congregation come together to ll a void such as this, that the experience tends to help us gel together as a people united in the service to our congregation and to God. I happily welcome the Rabbi and his family home, and extend my appreciation to him as well, for representing our Kehillah on the 2015 Bualo community educational visit to Eretz Yisrael.

At this time, our immediate attention turns to preparing for the observance of the High Holy Days. As you know, plenty of work goes into the preparations and planning. It will take a herculean eort by many to put in place all that is needed. If any of you would like some formal participation in the services or preparation, please let the temple oce know. ey will forward your request to me, the Rabbi and our ritual committee.

I wish everyone a wonderful last half of summer.

CONDOLENCES

Temple Beth Tzedek mourns the passing of Cantor Gerald DeBruin, z’l, who served his congregations as a volunteer and professionally for seven decades. He ociated at tens of thousands of synagogue services, and at thousands of namings, b’nai mitzvah, conrmations, weddings, and funerals. His visits brought comfort to thousands of hospitalized congregants and those in shiva. He performed with the Bualo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bualo Civic Orchestra, cantorial concerts with other Bualo-area cantors, and at many meetings and events. He was prominent in the Cantors’ Assembly and was recognized by the Jewish eological Seminary of America with an honorary doctorate in Jewish Music.

Despite a full professional life, Cantor DeBruin was deeply devoted to his family. We extend our condolences to Belle, Larry, Jerey, Cheryl, and Hy.
