Slightly Nasal Voice of

the People

Recently the Temple Beth Am staff dedicated

themselves to being more environmentally aware.

Through this initiative the staff have doubled their

recycling efforts and have adopted Pressman Academy’s

composting program. We are proud that we have

significantly reduced our carbon footprint! In addition

to the recycling and composting, the staff also dedicated

themselves to spending more time with nature.

As time went by, it became clear that spending more time in nature was

proving to be a significant challenge. Many of the staff members are so

dedicated that they arrive at work before sunrise and remain until after

sunset (at least during the winter months) and can often be found at the shul

on weekends. Because of the inability to connect with nature, staff morale

was in a steep decline.

Shawn Gatewood, our new Facilities Manager came up with a very creative

answer to this problem. “When I first arrived here, there was all this talk of

being connected with nature,” he said, “yet the office space was barren and

the only green visible was the old carpet. It didn’t make sense to me.”

He presented an idea to Executive Director Sheryl Goldman about creating

small openings in the roof and allowing more fresh air into the building.

Not only would this allow for more sunlight, but it would also create little

waterfalls on the few rainy days we have each year. Sheryl did not give it much

thought until she broke her ankle and she, too longed to be directly connected

with nature, and thus, gave Shawn the go-ahead for this project.

The changes were subtle. The air smelled fresher, the thermostats, which

were always being fought over, remained more consistent and morale was

up slightly. It held that way until the most recent heavy rainfalls. In the staff

kitchen and outside the Cantorial Suite, little waterfalls appeared. And then, it

happened, a grand waterfall developed right above the center set of cubicles

in the Administrative Suite. Led by Cori Drasin, the staff did their own little

ode to Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and began singing and dancing! Morale

was at an all-time high!

No one was happier than Development Associate, Emily St. Lifer, who sat

directly under the grand waterfall. “This is amazing! It reminds me so much

of college! As a student at Syracuse, we would often drive the two hours to

Niagara Falls. The way the rain is falling, bouncing off the desk and hitting me

in my face, reminds me of my trips on the ‘Maid of the Mist.’”

Sheryl shared, “I am grateful for Shawn’s vision. He is an asset to our team.

Now we are truly connecting with nature on a daily basis.”

At the time of this publishing, there has been discussion about closing the holes in the roof; however, each roofer interviewed has seen the benefit of the little oasis that has been created and they have refused to fill the holes in the roof (much to the relief of the staff).

Chasin’ Waterfalls

Paraphrasing the title of an iconic Beatles’ song, it’s been a long

and winding road to approval but, later this year the 1000

block of La Cienega Boulevard will be officially known as Beth

Am Way. The Temple Beth Am address will become One Beth Am

Way. “With all of the improvements that will take place including

the sanctuary remodel, construction of added school facilities and

the recent facelift of Beth Am Manor, the street name change will

further brand our shul,” said Rabbi Adam Kligfeld. “The cost of new

stationary, website updating and other documentary changes will

all be worth it,” he added. Given that the official change date is to be

determined, any Bar/Bat Mitzvah and wedding invitations will be

reviewed for accuracy prior to printing.

In order to change a street name in the City of Los Angeles an

application must be submitted to the Bureau of Engineering and

signed by 51% of the property owners abutting the street. “Since

there are only two property owners it was easy to get 100%,” said

former TBA President, Mark Wolf. “I was honored to sign for TBA

and the Manor,” he commented as the application was submitted

before the ownership change of Beth Am Manor. There was also

a $5,000 deposit required with the application. An anonymous

donor covered the expense and asked for a parking space at High

Holiday services in September.

Plans are underway for a big celebration on the actual name

change date. “We will have a big block party celebration when

the new “Beth Am Way” street signs are installed,” said TBA

President Susan Hetsroni. “Miniature street sign replicas will be

on sale as a fundraiser,” she added. Local dignitaries are expected

to attend, including former County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky,

Dodger Centerfielder Joc Pederson and KNBC Weathercaster

Fritz Coleman.

This change was not without controversy. “The owners of the

corner mini-mall complained,” explained Executive Director

Sheryl Goldman. “They had demanded a different street name

and address for themselves: 711, Philly Pizza, Momo Sushi,

Elite, Chicken on Fire Terrace but forgot that they’re located on

Olympic so they weren’t qualified to kvetch,” she explained.

It’s a special time at Temple Beth Am with many exciting changes

in store. These changes will now include a customized street name

and address. The zip+4 will remain the same at 90035-2507.

Planning for SabbaticalDue to Rabbi Kligfeld’s impending

sabbatical, the Ritual Committee

felt it necessary to hire an assistant to

Rabbi Lucas. Luckily, Pope Benedict

XVI, who stepped down recently, was

available. Here are a few excerpts

from our interview:

RC: Thank you for joining us, Mr. Pope, and welcome to Temple Beth Am.Pope: It’s a pleasure to be here, and please do not call me ‘mister’. ‘Your Holiness’ will do.

RC: Whatever you say. I see you’re wearing a red kipah. Did you attend the National Men’s Club event?Pope: What are you talking about?

RC: Never mind. Do you have any experience leading a large congregation?Pope: I was the spiritual leader for 1.2 billion followers.

RC: Then you never had trouble getting a minyan?Pope: A what?

RC: We Jews pray with a minimum of ten people. How often do you pray? Are you up for 3 times a day?Pope: My voice is always with God, and his voice is with me.

RC: That’s good to know! Do you live in walking distance?Pope: I use the popemobile, but if the community prefers, I could rechristen it the Rav-Van.

RC: Hmm...I’ll have to check on that. On another topic, are you able to ask for monetary donations?Pope: I’m used to passing the hat, and receiving quite a bit.

Thanks to the ceaseless work of TBA’s Building Committee,

the Campus Expansion Program has been further refined and

includes some opportunities for those who would like to make an

impactful gift to the Capital Campaign – opportunities that reflect

the diversity and depth of our community. At the top of the list are:

Sanctuary Sky Boxes. The existing balcony is being

reconfigured to allow for a limited number of skyboxes for those

who are searching for a truly unique Shabbat or Holiday experience.

The suites include an incomparable set of amenities unavailable at

any other synagogue:

• Televisions + TVs within the Suite – if the services or sermon

doesn’t move you, tune in to any other venue at TBA or,

for a modest additional payment, services at a variety of

Conservative, Reform, Orthodox and unaffiliated synagogues,

as well as a library of our clergy’s most popular sermons.

• Bar, refrigerator & serving tables.

• A private entrance for those who may need to slip in

late (or slip out early!).

• A sumptuous Kiddush, as well as snacks and

refreshments during services.

Each Suite includes both stadium seats as well as a fully enclosed

lounge area that can be tinted for privacy. Private Suite Packages

are ideal for entertaining business groups, family gatherings, or

for hosting private parties – and the perfect way to experience a

spiritual service in extreme comfort!

Private Suites come with naming rights - imagine the Marshall

Temkin Suite! – and are the ultimate way to express your

commitment to the TBA Community. Truly a unique opportunity

for $180,000 (plus annual fees and costs).

Rabbinical Spa and Fitness Center. A healthy body is essential

to spiritual guidance, and this opportunity to ensure the wellness

of our clergy cannot be overlooked. This 12,000-square foot facility

includes state-of-the-art fitness equipment, a full-time trainer, wet

and dry sauna (to achieve the essential Jewish Triathlon – shvitz,

shave and shower) and a full library including copies of the Bavli,

Yerushalmi and classic Jewish texts. While admission is limited to

ordained clergy, the knowledge that you have made possible the

spiritual uplift of our Rabbis and Cantor makes this $360,000 an

opportunity that cannot be missed.

Coming soon – the Rabbi Rembaum Cigar Club and Scotch Bar!

Capital Campaign Update – Naming Opportunities

By Bob Braun, Capital Campaign Co-Chair

RENOVATION COMMITTEE UPDATE

Executive Director Sheryl Goldman is pleased to

report that the leadership, inspired by the recent

Bus Tour of Jewish LA, have decided to shift gears

regarding the plans for our Sanctuary Renovation.

Two TBA Past Presidents, Vivian and Ron Alberts,

along with Rabbi Lucas and our Director of

Programming & Engagement Lia Mandelbaum

presented a proposal to the Building Committee

to redirect Capital Campaign dollars towards the

renovation of the historic Breed Street Shul in Boyle

Heights. According to Jewish Historical Society of

Southern California President Steve Sass, all that is

required is $10 million (mostly to cover an expensive earthquake retrofit), and

this historic shul will be ready for occupancy. Given that there are so many

congregations in our Pico Robertson neighborhood, the proposal to select the

Boyle Heights location, where virtually no Jews live, was seen as a worthwhile

pursuit. With the expansion of public transportation, along with ride share

services such as Uber and Lyft, it should take no more than an hour in traffic

for families to get to Breed Street, and we would be doing a huge mitzvah

in preserving this historic venue where many of our ancestors once

worshipped. Rabbi Harry Silverstein was especially thrilled to hear of this

development as his parents, Rabbi Osher and Zeva Silverstein, were founders

of Breed Street back in the day. In addition, the Building Committee is also

considering scrapping the plans to build a new School on Corning Street, and

instead take over occupancy of the original Los Angeles Jewish Academy, also

on Breed Street.

RC: That may be a problem. We won’t pass a hat on Shabbat. How do you plan on adding to the capital campaign?Pope: We can have a bake sale. I’ve been told I make a wicked wafer.

RC: Can’t wait to taste them! Changing gears here a bit, do you have any children?Pope: All of god’s creatures are my children.

RC: Oh no, we don’t have enough room at Pressman Academy. We will need to build that new building faster. It has indeed been a pleasure getting to know you. Do you have any questions for us?Pope: I was given a magnificent white robe at my previous pulpit. Will I be able to wear it here?

RC: We have the perfect opportunity for you to wear it in September/October. See you on the Bimah!

Dear Sisters and Friends,

Our sages teach: “When the month of Adar arrives, happiness

increases because it is the time of miracles for Jewish people,

it is the MONTH of MAZAL!”

As Purim is the central holiday of Adar, the entire month is

permeated with our pursuit of joy and happiness. As everyone

knows, it is hard to define happiness. We all want to be happy

and we all have different expectations and aspirations for more

happiness in our lives. Loving and caring for your family, for people

whom you hold dear, true lifelong friendships and relationships,

your community, our beloved Sisterhood, goodness done toward

you, learning opportunities, personal growth, and mitzvot.

Individually or combined it gives you purpose, joy, satisfaction,

and validation which moves you towards happiness. Thanks to our

TBA Sisterhood and all of YOU! It’s Adar, be happy!

May this month bring you strength and true happiness, in other

words a “healthy mazal!” Happy Purim! Join us for the 6th AnnualTEMPLE BETH AM MEN’S SOCIETY

On February 2, Pressman Academy Day School hosted its first-ever Winter

Exhibition. Designed as an opportunity for parents to see some of the

work our children have completed so far this year, to give our children an

authentic audience for their work, and to bring our community together in

a celebration of learning, we were thrilled to bring so many people into our

building in order to feel, see and experience a Pressman Academy education.

This also represented our first opportunity to show off our work as we embark

on more interdisciplinary education as well as Project Based Learning.

On Superbowl Sunday, a sell-out crowd of TBA members

and friends enjoyed a very special bus tour of the diverse

neighborhoods where so many of our ancestors settled. Led

by Steve Sass of the Jewish Historical Society of Southern

California, we first headed to Boyle Heights and drove by the

old Fairmont Shul and Menorah center, and then stopped at the

Breed Street Shul, followed by a short walk to see the locations

of the old Mount Sinai Medical Clinic, the Los Angeles Jewish

Academy, home of Mickey Cohen, the Soto-Michigan Jewish

Community Center, and more. Our second destination was

Pico Union for a lunch & learn at the Pico Union Project (PUP),

housed in the original Sinai Temple built in 1909, and currently

a multi-faith cultural arts center and house of worship, we

were treated to music and a talk by composer and musician

Craig Taubman, who founded the PUP in 2013. As we headed

out, we drove by some of the remaining extraordinary old art-

deco homes that had been owned by local Jews. All in all, the

event was a big success! We will be exploring other tours in the

future; if you’re interested, email our Director of Programming

& Engagement Lia Mandelbaum at [email protected].

TBA HISTORICAL BUS TOUR

Join Temple Beth Am – in partnership with IKAR, Temple

Mishkon Tephilo, Kehillat Israel, Camp Gilboa, and Jewish

Family Services – in supporting the refugees being resettled in

San Diego. These asylum seekers include genocide survivors

from Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria and

Iraq. San Diego is the nearest Jewish Family Services venue for

absorbing refugees. Join us in giving these families a new future

and providing parents and their children with dignity.

Please deposit new or “like new” items in the bins in the TBA lobby by March 8.

If you have large items (e.g., furniture) or would like to

volunteer to help box, store, load, or drive donations, or need

information about tax receipts, please contact Tyson Roberts at

[email protected]. Donations can also be designated for

refugee programming through Rabbi Kligfeld’s Discretionary Fund:

www.tbala.org/donate

At this time, only the following donations are needed:• Furniture (tables, chairs, or couches only)

• Small appliances (microwaves, toasters, toaster-ovens)

• Cleaning supplies (dish soap, sponges, laundry detergent,

waste baskets, brooms)

• Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap, hygiene products,

toothpaste, toothbrushes)

• Baby items (car seats, strollers, bottles, diapers, baby clothes)

• School supplies (backpacks, paper, pens, pencils, notebooks,

children’s books)

Jewish World Watch Run and Walk to End Genocide

The Annual Operation PB&J (no peanut butter will be used),

coordinated with B’nai David - Judea, will take place at TBA on

March 11 following the Megillah reading. Join in the opportunity

to fulfill the Purim mitzvah of “Matanot L’evyonim” by assembling

survival kits for the homeless and making sack lunches. The following

day you will have a chance to meet and give out the kits personally to

the homeless or to bring the bags to organizations that provide

social services. Contact Dianne Shershow, [email protected] or

(323) 314-3549, to sign up for one or both of these projects or if

you have any questions.
