While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance

leaning down, picking something up, and throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer, he noticed that this was a young man, picking up starfish, one by one, and tossing each one gently back into the water. He came closer still and called out, “Good morning. May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” The old man smiled and said, “I must ask, then, why you are throwing starfish into the ocean.” To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

The young man listened politely. Then, he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the

ocean past the breaking waves and said, “I made a difference for that one.”

This story, each time I hear it, reminds all of us that we each have the potential to make a difference in the life of someone else. Sometimes, this difference is a result of big acts; sometimes, it is from something small. Sometimes, we are helping people far away, other times, we are helping our neighbors, Jewish and non-Jews.

As Jews, we feel the particular power of mutual responsibility and interconnectedness during the High Holiday season. Our tradition, in the Talmud, teaches, “Kol Yisrael Areivim zeh baZeh.” Each and every Jew is responsible for one another. And, during our coming High Holidays, the message becomes even more relevant. In a few weeks, we will recite the Vidui, the Confessional Prayer, in services on Yom Kippur. I remember when I was a child, wondering why my mother and father were confessing to all of these sins. Had they murdered? What had they destroyed? They were not xenophobic! Though I didn’t actually know what that meant...

Over the years, I have come to understand that the Vidui is just one additional way to look at what it means to be a member of the Jewish people. If we are truly God-loving people, if we are truly Good-loving people, we have to, in our individual and our communal lives, work together to bring out the best in one another. “Being responsible” for one another, quite literally, means making sure that we are doing our very best at representing Judaism – particularly here in Mahopac – in a way that not only makes us proud, but makes our wider community proud as well.

As a Jew, as your new rabbi, I feel a tremendous – perhaps, overwhelming - personal responsibility for your spiritual welfare and for the general welfare of Jewish people around the world. Fortunately, as the “starfish story” above reminds me, I know that I just need to pick up one starfish at a time. And, working together, I know what a difference we can begin to make.

On behalf of my entire family, please accept our blessings to you for a year of health, happiness, sustenance and peace. It is so exciting to be beginning this new year together. Shana Tova – Happy 5771!

Can You Feel It???

Usually springtime speaks to us about new beginnings. But for Jewish people. The fall is our new

year, time of renewal and reflection. For Temple Beth Shalom there are so many new people and events for me to tell you about that I don’t know where to begin. We welcomed Rabbi Hammerman and his family with a bike-in from White Plains to Mahopac. The excitement in the air was incredible. One congregant told me that they could feel the walls vibrating.

I have been elected your Temple President. We have several new board of trustee members: Jodi Gorelick, Sharon Gunzburg and Jen Klee. When you see them, take time to wish them a Mazel Tov. Some have served before, but once again volunteer their time like Steve Nadelhaft. I also want to welcome Susan Katz and Gail Freundlich to the executive committee and say yaser koach to Melody Weisman, David Michaels and Steve Bettman for their continued dedication. We are on a new path of amazing things to come. Please be a part of the renewed ruach.

Have you seen the Oy Vey Café? It’s a place to settle in and have a quiet cup of coffee, read the paper or watch the news while you wait for your child in Hebrew School. We will also be utilizing the café for adult education classes and some teen functions. We have added wireless internet and cable television.

Our next event was something new for us—Shabbat in the community or the third meal. My thanks to Steve and Jodi Gorelick for being the first to open their home for this event. We had a wonderful attendance and many congregants said this opened the opportunity to talk with people they might otherwise not have. The sisterhood once again had a very successful flea market.

Change: to become or make different. That is the meaning of the word as defined in the dictionary. I have learned recently that change just for the sake of change is not usually a good idea. We are, however, in the middle of many changes at TBS and I hope that you will embrace these changes with an open mind and heart. Let’s give Rabbi Hammerman our full support on the changes and programs that are ahead. Looking for the value of what they bring to our congregation, change is a wonderful thing.

The membership committee, under the leadership of Gail Freundlich with assistance from Men’s Club and Sisterhood will be planning the installation of Rabbi Hammerman on November 14th. Stay tuned for more details. So be there with us as we move forward and enjoy the new and exciting Temple Beth Shalom…..

Cantor’s Notes

Despite the fact that I was raised in an Orthodox school and Shul, I have to admit my early religious inspiration was created less by my Rabbi’s stories and more by watching The Ten Commandments on TV. To me, Charleton Heston parting the red sea was truly awesome (though I must admit for a long time I was afraid of men with large sticks). What appeared on a screen made more sense to me than the pictures presented as part of my early Judaic education. I especially had difficulty understanding the imagery surrounding the High Holy Days. The entire concept of the Book of Life puzzled me. I held a mental pic-

ture of a large book and imagined some ghost-like hand taking a quill and scratching out some hieroglyphics. Even more confusing, somehow the phantom hand would record information that would then become permanent. I wondered, is God a disconnected author of this mysteriously large book? And if so, am I at least a con-tributing editor? Truthfully, I have always believed I am a co-creator with God in writing my part in the Book of Life. But I have also wondered what my soul is doing here, creating the information that is recorded. I wonder what happens to the Book of Life when we finish our lifetime. Does it and our souls exist for eternity? For answers to these questions, I look to the Jewish philosophy of reincarnation. Most American Jews may not be familiar with reincarnation however, traditional Judaism has always held it as an underlying belief. Reincarnation was a concept held by the Pharisees, the intellectual ancestors of Rabbinic Judaism and is what distinguished them from the Sadduccees. Judaism’s 1st century esoteric text, the Zohar, teaches that souls are reborn to continue the process of repairing the world. This process, Tikkun Olam is a core tenet of Judaism as reincarnation is a core tenet of Kabbalah. The Kabbalah teaches that we are in a perpetual cycle: Gilgul haneshamot - transmigration of the soul. We choose to incarnate with a soul circle to heal, clear relationship karma and learn certain fundamental life lessons such as self-love, worthiness, compassion, trust, joy and Godliness. I believe integrating these lessons raises our soul’s vibration and this vibration, in turn, is the foundation of what is inscribed and sealed each year in the Book of Life. So to me, on the High Holy Days we have an opportunity to look at ourselves and to discover if we are closer to understanding our soul’s purpose. Are we learning our lessons? Are we working in partnership with God to edit our life script for highest and best good? If not, it is conceivable we will have the chance to do so again, our next time around. As the New Year approaches, I am reminded that I am here to help raise the consciousness of those around me; to teach and to inspire others to connect with their life’s purpose. To that end, I have recently completed my certification as a past life regressionist to add to my tool box for serving as a spiritual counselor and clergy. May all of our lessons and the choices we make this year be for highest and best good. B’shalom v’shirim,

From Hebrew School:

I hope everyone had a restful summer and I can hardly believe we’ll be celebrating Rosh Hashanah before we begin school this year. We are geared up and ready to see lots of ex-citing things happen during 5771. We, of course, are delighted to welcome Rabbi Ham-merman and his family to our community and look forward to his participation with our

students. We have plans to continue our schoolwide family education programs, revamp our hey class Lunch & Learn sessions, and get our post hey students (now called TBS Gedolim) involved in an excit-ing new program called Cooking and Conversation with Rabbi Hammerman which begins Wednesday

September 15th at 6:30. We have already instituted a Shabbat playroom for our younger set which will evolve into a Tot Shabbat with stories and songs for them once a month. Jr. Congregation scheduled for the High Holidays will take on a new look as Jr.Congo beginning October 16 and continuing the third Shabbat of the month (subject to calendar adjustments).

One of our first big events is scheduled for Wednesday September 22nd when we substitute regular school hours for a special dinner in the sukkah for our Hebrew School families. Dinner will be followed by a short service and family- friendly activities. The following week, Hebrew School moves from Wednes-day to Thursday September 30th, when we march in the streets with the Torahs in honor of Simchat Torah. Rabbi Hammerman has promised some real sweet treats to all the participants during the hakafot.

We have a lot of exciting things on tap for the year. So when you bring your children for the first day of school Sunday September 12 at 9:00AM stick around for a short back to school program. Everyone is invited, even our gesher and mechina families who only come one Weds!! Come meet the teachers, see what our curriculum is about and get a glimpse of the “Oy Vey” Café that will be open to you during Hebrew School hours.

Spotlight on our Members

No, they are not new members, but the Perlmans have taken on a new status at Temple Beth Shalom. They are our congregation’s new First Family. So, though many, perhaps most, in the temple, know Georgene, Eric and Raymond, we wanted to offer the en-tire congregation some insights to this three-some.

Georgene was on her way up to Schenectady in late July when we spoke on the phone. It is a trip that is part of her routine as she serves as regional super-visor for the New York Lottery. Though she typically works out of the Lottery’s Fishkill office, her duties include supervising a sales and marketing staff of 25 and a support staff of eight in both that Dutchess County location, as well as the Schenectady office. The two offices work with a combined 2,600 retailers who issue Lot-tery tickets. Such important responsibilities and the experience that comes with 20 years with the state agency bode well for TBS as Georgene assumes the position of “chief ex-ecutive” of our temple.

The spouse of our new First Lady is Eric, who also has served the temple during the fam-ily’s long membership, most notably as treas-urer. Eric is a comptroller for a manufacturing company in the Bronx and runs a financial ser-

vices business from the family’s Mahopac home.

Even Raymond, the couple’s 18-year-old son who is about to enter Westchester Commu-

nity College as a fresh-man, has been very in-volved during his high school years in temple activities. “He attended several kinnuses and went to regional conven-tions for USY,” Georgene said, “and that made his mother very happy.”

Actually, it was Raymond’s coming of age, that is, becoming old enough to begin a He-brew education, that brought the family to Temple Beth Shalom. They had lived in Setau-ket, near Stony Brook, on Long Island, for 18 years before moving to Maho-

pac, where they have now lived for almost 14 years, and when the time came to enroll Ray-mond, the family visited several synagogues in the area. Georgene did not come from a reli-gious family, and she sought a temple where not only would the Hebrew school provide her son with a proper Jewish education, but one at which she also could feel comfortable despite her lack of religious background while at the same time acquiring the education she had not gotten as a youth. The family agreed on Tem-ple Beth Shalom.

“It was Colin,” she said, referring to Rabbi Colin Brodie, TBS’ spiritual leader at the time. “He made me feel very comfortable. ”Then, she said, the warmth of the congregants cemented her feelings and reassured the family that they had made the right decision.”

Georgene credits one congregant in particular, Phyllis Solar Dougherty, for taking her under her wing. That guidance encouraged her to get more involved in temple activities. Georgene’s temple resume includes the presidency of the Sisterhood, a member of the Board of Trustees and two years as a vice president. Georgene has also run the script pro-gram, a productive temple fund raiser, for five years.

Her personal educational journey was en-hanced with the arrival of the Rabbis Kalev, Josh and Selilah. “Josh made me feel very, very comfort-able at temple, and I studied Torah, both reading and interpretation, with Selilah,” she said. She started attending adult Hebrew classes—“I still need work,” she admitted—and she took Rabbi Kalev’s class on services for beginners. “I now know the Torah ser-vice very well,” she said with pride. “I’m very com-fortable on the bimah, and as president, I hope to attend as many services as possible.”

Her comfort on the bimah will serve her well, for she will find herself making speeches and offer-ing other communications, including weekly an-nouncements at the conclusion of Shabbat services, from this center stage.

When not spending time at the temple, which she calls her “hobby” and her “love,” or working on the job, Georgene and her family enjoy the hobbies and pastimes that bring a special pleasure. “Eric loves to play golf,” Georgene said. “I love to read, almost anything—historic novels, romance, myster-ies.” She added, “I’m getting better at gardening and I get an immense pleasure from seeing my flowers bloom.” Raymond’s first love is baseball, and he

hopes to go out for the baseball team at WCC next spring. He also enjoys working out, and another fa-vored pastime is skiing. A much anticipated annual family vacation occurs at their time share at Smug-glers’ Notch in Vermont, though Georgene says their favorite ski area is Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, Vermont. Raymond believes he knows what he wants to do when he is finished with his education. “He is thinking about becoming a phys ed teacher and a professional athletic trainer,” Georgene said.

After taking a two-year hiatus from most tem-ple responsibilities, as she settled into the latest posi-tion to which she had been promoted, having given Raymond the attention she felt he needed during his last, critical high school years, Georgene has as-sumed the presidency with her own plans for the fu-ture. “First, and I know it’s a cliché, we need to grow the membership through outreach, new pro-grams and innovative ideas. We need to reach out to more members to become involved,” she added. “People will ‘volunteer’ if asked. In my experience, anyone whom I’ve called on to serve on a committee has said yes; nobody has said no.” She continued, “And, of course, we must be financially sound. The board is in agreement that we must establish a ‘rainy day’ fund.”

She still had a considerable distance to go to reach Schenectady when our conversation neared its conclusion, and our new president ended our chat with encouraging sentiments and an appeal to all congregants to reach out to others. “This is a labor of love that I take very seriously,” she said, “and to-gether we must move forward in a positive way. I want people to tell me what’s on their mind. We are so lucky to have Rabbi Hammerman. He’s a great fit for us, but it is the congregation that brings us into the temple. For me, it was Phyllis, and we need others to show such warmth.”

The favorite words of the ritual committee these days seem to be, "Well, we can try that. " Shabbat at the beach? Sure, let's try it. Tisha B'Av at a camp? Sure, why not? Let's try it. Services have been going well. If you know how to read Torah, or lead a part of the service, please let us know, we can use some more participants. We also need people to come to the shiva and yahrzeit minyans. It is very mean-ingful to help our congregation observe these occasions, and we should all participate when we can. The high holidays are coming, and we are working to make sure the congregation has services that are uplifting and meaningful. Succoth and Simchat Torah celebrations are planned. So please come, see what is going on. Some new ways of doing things, some traditional ways of doing things. We welcome your feedback and ideas and help. The Ritual Committee has been working with Rabbi Hammerman planning services and celebrations. We are all very enthu-siastic about the upcoming events. Join us. Shalom,

I hope all of you are enjoying this extremely hot summer. It appears that this will be the hot-test July on record. Here at Tem-ple Beth Shalom, our activities are proceeding well in spite of the heat wave. First, let me begin

by welcoming our new Rabbi Eytan Ham-merman and his lovely family. He literally came in bike riding from White Plains to his new home in Mahopac. Sisterhood

Hi everyone. This is my first posting as sisterhood president for the Temple Times. Many incredible women have held this post before me including Lynn Michaels, Georgene Perlman,

Phyllis Solar , Gloria Block and many others . I can only hope to continue the good work and TBS family spirit that they have all given to the tem-ple.

There are some events coming up that need some special mention. On September 24th the sisterhood will sponsor a Shabbat dinner in the sukah.. On October 17th, while our manly men watch football, we will be having a special tea party for girls of all ages to welcome Rebecca and the girls to our family. Large hats, gloves and pearls are encouraged.

We have said many times in the last few years that this is not your mother’s sisterhood. My mother’s sisterhood consisted of white haired la-dies having luncheons on Wednesdays, always tuna and egg salad, followed by mah jong. Well most of today’s sisterhood members work on Wednesdays. Some of us play mah jong and we do seem to eat a lot of tuna and egg salad. But today’s sisterhood is also about having fun and making Temple Beth Shalom a warm, friendly place.

by Dana Chipkin There will always be some bad times mixed in amongst the good, where no matter what you say or do… you’ll be misunderstood. Or you may think it’s “meant to be,” then once again you’re spurned, but worry not, my beloved friend… ‘cause the tide is gonna turn. How could we appreciate rainbows, rabbits feet and four-leaf clovers if we didn’t have some hardship that we had to triumph over? Despite measures to protect you may still get burned… but it’s just temporary, my beloved friend… for the tide is gonna turn.

Life can oftentimes be painful like a wound from broken glass I know because I’ve felt it and I know this, too, shall pass. I’ve witnessed miracles happen against the greatest of all odds… so, though there may be darkness now, don’t lose your faith in God. Life can change in an instant this much, I have learned… so, worry, not, my beloved friend, ‘cause the tide is gonna turn.
