2014 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Good CompanyThe Owls are one of only six teams in the FBS who have scored 40.0 pointsper game and allowed fewer than 15.0 (40.0/12.7). They join Baylor (59.3,9.0), Texas A&M (55.3, 11.8), Ole Miss (44.0, 10.3), Duke (43.5, 11.5), andAlabama (42.0, 14.0).

Leaders of the PackThrough week four of the season, Temple leads the American Athletic Con-ference in nine categories: total defense, passing defense, pass efficiencydefense, scoring defense, turnover margin, 4th down percent defense, redzone defense, net punting, and punt returns.

On a national scale, the Owls tied for the top spot in turnover margin, where they are tied with Florida and Notre Dame at 2.67, and 4th down per-cent defense, in which 13 teams are tied at 0.00. In seven other categories,Temple is ranked in the Top 10.

Hey Tough GuyIn 2013, the Temple Owls got back to a tradition of awarding single-digit jer-seys to the toughest players onthe team. This season, thecoaches awarded four num-bers and the players selectedthe balance.

By NCAA rule, offensivelinemen are not permitted towear single-digits and that pre-vented Kyle Friend and DionDawkins - each recognized bytheir peers as two of the tough-est on the team - from chang-ing their numbers.

Three players - Jalen Fitz-patrick, John Christopher andTyler Matakevich - remainedtough enough to retain theirnumbers from a year ago.

The biggest surprise wasthat freshman Sean Chandler earned the respect of his peers as the playersawarded him a single-digit jersey.

2 - Avery Williams 6 - Stephaun Marshall3 - Sean Chandler 7 - John Christopher4 - Kenneth Harper 8 - Tyler Matakevich5 - Jalen Fitzpatrick 9 - Matt Ioannidis

Who’s #1?When awarding the single-digit jerseys, there was a logjam on the ninthplayer. Head coach Matt Rhule decided that the #1 jersey would be given tothe toughest player of the week. Therefore, the #1 will be worn by a differentplayer from game to game.At Vanderbilt: CB Tavon Young - 2 tackles, 2 INTsVs. Navy: DT Hershey Walker - 2 tacklesVs. Delaware State: CB Tavon Young - 1 tackle

You’ve Got a Friend in MeJunior center Kyle Friend has taken his leadership to a new level this sea-son. After earning captain status as a sophomore in 2012, and playing along-side three seniors, the Carlisle, PA, native has served as mentor to aninexperienced O-line.

Kyle and Eric Lofton became inseparable this Spring and the dividendspaid off for Lofton who had seen limited action prior to his redshirt-junior sea-son.

"I'm just trying to emulate what he does," said redshirt-junior EricLofton. "He's done it. I figure if I do what he does, we'll have another guydoing what Kyle Friend does. He does it the right way."

Said head coach Matt Rhule, “He's big, strong, fast and extremely in-telligent. He keeps everyone on the same page."

It All Starts on the LineTemple enters the 2014 season with a very inexperienced offensive line. While center Kyle Friend has started 21 games, the remaining players -starters and backups - have a combined 5 starts under their belt (not includ-ing Shahbaz Ahmed’s 5 starts at defensive end a year ago).

Only six Division I teams entered the season with fewer than TU’s 26starts: Tennessee (6), Ohio State (20), Arkansas State (22), San Jose State(23), Army and Louisiana Tech (24).

The group is coming together, allowing an NCAA-low one sack so farthis season.

Temple MadeWhen Adam DiMichele was promoted from graduate assistant to full-timewide receivers coach on February 6, 2014, he became the 19th Temple foot-ball player to become a coach at his alma mater - and the first in over 25years.

DiMichele was a quarterback and two-time team MVP and captain forthe Owls from 2006-08. He is ranked fourth in TU history with 5,024 passingyards and 40 TDs.

Wiz KHALIF-aA former NJ High School player of the year, redshirt-sophomore WR KhalifHerbin has become a weapon for the Temple Owls. Entering 2014, the Owlsplan to use Herbin as a wide receiver, running back, kick and punt returner.

"He's been fantastic, he's been explosive, competitive and the otherguys are matching his intensity level. Khalif is really fun to have on the field,”said head coach Matt Rhule.

Herbin displayed that explosiveness when he returned a punt 84-yardsfor a touchdown vs. Delaware State. It is the second longest punt return inschool history and gave Khalif his first career touchdown.

young champFreshman CB Sean Chandler has had the nickname “Champ” since beforehe set foot on the Temple campus. Since his arrival, he’s been nothing lessthan a knockout.

Not only has he risen up the depth chart to a starting position, but heearned the respect of his peers when he was awarding the single-digit jerseygiven to the toughest players on the team.

Chandler, from Camden (NJ) High took advantage of his proximity tothe Temple campus by watching his teammates during spring workouts be-fore heading to class.

Ty Goes to the RunnerJunior LB Tyler Matakevich has developed a reputation as a tackling ma-chine. After becoming the first Temple freshman to break the 100 tackle bar-rier in 2012, he topped it the following year with 137 tackles. His 99 solotackles led the nation, becoming the first Owl in 25 years to lead the nationin any category.

Not surprising, Matakevich finds himself among the nations elite play-ers placing him on the Watch Lists for the Bednarik, Butkus, Nagurski, andRotary Lombardi Awards, and CFPA LB Trophy.

Said head coach Matt Rhule, “He's a leader, he's tough, he's physical,he represents what we want to represent. Players around him respond tohim. He has the physical tools, the mental tools and the intangibles - the in-stincts, the feel for the game - that are hard to find. I don't think there's anysecret why he led the nation in tackles last year and right now he's muchbetter than he was last year."

Swiss Army KnifeRedshirt junior WR John Christopher has become the jack of all trades forthe Temple Owls. Besides his value as a wide receiver - one that has earnedhim the respect of his coaches and teammates who for a second seasonbestowed him with a single-digit jersey - he has become indispensable onspecial teams.

"He makes that diving catch at SMU that makes ESPN's top plays, andwhat I love about it is he ran down on the kickoff the following play," saidMatt Rhule. "That's what John Christopher is. He was voted by his team-mates into the single digits for the second year in a row. When your team-mates do it, that's really something. He's physically tough, he's mentallytough, he's a great student, great teammate. He's everything that we're tryingto find here. He's everything that we're trying to recruit."

Christopher serves as the long snapper on punts adding speed to theposition which allows him to get downfield to make tackles. He also servesas a backup holder and punt returner.

Sharif Don’t Like ItJust like the line from the '80's Clash hit, "Rock the Casbah," DE Sharif Finchdon't like it when the opponent has the ball. Yesterday, he recorded his firstcareer interception and returned it 65-yards for a TD. It marked his secondTD in consecutive games (last week he forced a fumble that he recoveredin the end zone for a TD vs. Navy.). Add in a blocked punt that was recoveredfor a TD in the end zone in the 2013 season finale and that's three TDs hehas accounted for in four games.

BAM-BamRedshirt-sophomore WR Zack Bambary was a walk on from Easton, PA, in2012. Last season, he saw limited game action in two contests and wasawarded the scout team player of the week prior to the win at Army.

What makes Bambary unique is that he suffers from Type-2 diabetes.Throughout practice he needs to track his blood sugar levels and often hasto take insulin.

Bombs AwayFreshman P Alex Starzyk got the nod for the starting job during week 1 atVanderbilt and has never looked back. In three games this season,Starzyk is averaging 40.5 yards per punt, which leads the conference.

Coming into this week, Starzyk has four punts of 50+ yards, includinga season-high 62 yarder vs. Navy in week 2. Against Delaware State, itwas the first time Starzyk averaged less than 40 yards a punt (two puntsfor 66 yards, average of 33.0).

QuarterbacksThe quarterback position is led by offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, nowin his second season. Last year, the Owls offense gained nearly 400 yards per game, the second best mark in school history and the most since 1979.

In 7 starts at QB in 2013, true freshman QB P.J. Walker threwfor 2,084 yards and 20 TDs. Those marks set the record for Templefreshmen and challenged the all-time school marks. With a com-plete offseason of training and a full season ahead, many are ex-pecting Walker to re-write the school passing records in just hissophomore season. He was already named by Athlon’s as one ofthe Top 5 Players to Watch in 2014 and is on the Watch Lists for theMaxwell, Manning, Davey O’Brien and CFPA QB Awards. He has notdisappointed thus far throwing for 200+ yards and 2 TDs in each game. As such, hehas thrown for at least 200 yards and one TD in all 9 career starts.

Connor Reilly began the 2013 season as the starter but injuries and inconsis-tency opened the door for Walker. On a national stage in a packed house, Reillymade his first collegiate start in the opener at Notre Dame and showed promise. The following week, however, he suffered a knee injury and never completely re-covered before the reins were handed to Walker.

Frank Nutile (Ramsey, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) and Lenny Williams (McKees Rocks,PA/Sto-Rox) were part of the 2014 recruiting class. Nutile suffered a torn ACL thissummer and will miss the season while recovering from surgery.

Tim diGiorgio redshirted last season and did not see game action. He saw mopup duty at Vanderbilt and vs. Delaware State.

Wide ReceiversThis position is under reconstruction from a year ago. Adam DiMichele, a grad-

uate assistant last season, takes over as position coach after the departure of TerrySmith.

The 2014 unit will have to make up for the loss of energetic leader, Ryan Al-derman (team captain), and statistical leader, Robby Anderson (44-791-9TDs), froma year ago.

Returning are Jalen Fitzpatrick (38-429-3TDs) and JohnChristopher (31-331-2TDs). Like Alderman, each is undersized buttough as nails. Both earned single-digit jersey numbers in 2013-14 - given to the Owls’ toughest players - and each played throughinjuries to compete in every game last season. This season, Fitz-patrick leads all receivers with 10 catches for 105 yards and 2 TDs.

The Owls are looking for explosiveness from a couple of play-ers who redshirted a year ago. Romond deloatch, who had his2013 season cut short due to knee injury, and Khalif herbin, a for-mer New Jersey player of the year, is a threat to score from any-where on the field.

Nate hairston saw action last year at WR. This spring he ex-perimented at DB but was returned to offense. Brandon Shippen,a two-year contributor on defense, is making the switch to re-ceiver. On opening day with his first career catch, Shippen raced35 yards for a TD.

Competition is emerging from a quartet of freshmen. ventell Bryant (Tampa,FL/Jefferson), Matt Eaton (Pascagoula, MS/Pascagoula), and Brodrick Yancy(Bradenton, FL/Manatee) were all part of the 2014 recruiting class. Eaton made hisfirst career start in week 3 vs. Delaware State and Yancy has seen some playingtime. derrek Thomas was a mid-year transfer from Milford Academy. All four hadtheir share of missed time this summer.

Zach Bambary made contributions a year ago on the scout team and in limitedspecial teams action. dean Mosley, a converted QB, adds depth.

Tom Bradway, Marshall Ellick, and Rob heyen are walk-ons who enrolled atTemple in the winter of 2014. Bradway transferred from Lafayette (where he wasa baseball player) and Ellick comes by way of Air Force Prep.

Sophomore Keith Kirkwood, a transfer from Hawaii will have to redshirt forthe 2014 season. The Neptune, NJ, native elected to play closer to home.

Tight Ends & FULLBACKSWryly veteran, Ed Foley, the assistant head coach, is entrusted with the fresh-

faced group of tight ends.Gone is last year’s starter Chris Coyer. Coyer started 8 games

with 20 catches for 277 yards and 2 TDs.The only returner with experience is Wanemi Omuso.

Omuso, who has played 21 games with 1 career catch, is primarilya blocking TE and is coming off knee surgery that derailed his 2013season.

Cole Boozer and Saledeem Major redshirted in their first sea-son with the squad last year. Each recorded their first career catchin week 3 vs. Delaware State.

The Owls added former Florida recruit and Archbishop Wood star ColinThompson. The redshirt sophomore has been hampered by foot injuries through-out his college career and has yet to take the field for the Owls.

Thomas Rumer is making the conversion from quarterback. Kip Patton (Nor-ristown, PA) and Chris Myarick (Elkins Park, PA) are incoming freshmen.

There are two fullbacks on the roster - Marc Tyson and Eric Neefe. A formerwrestler, Tyson converted from LB to FB last summer. Neefe, a Philadelphia native, walked on and redshirted in 2013.

Running BacksThe stable of running backs are tutored by Tyree Foreman, who in his eighth yearat Temple has coached three all-conference players (Bernard Pierce, Montel Harrisand Matt Brown).

Kenneth harper, one of just eight seniors on the roster, re-turns. Last season he was the workhorse leading the team with136 carries, 613 yards and 9 TDs on the ground (his 9 rushing TDswere 2nd in the conference). He added 26 catches for 241 yardsand 2 TDs receiving. In 2014, he earned a spot on the Doak WalkerAward Watch List.

Jamie Gilmore played sparingly on offense but he averagedover 6.0-yards per touch. In his only extended action of the season, he rushed 16times for 92 yards in the season finale win at Memphis.

Sophomore Jahad Thomas was moved to running back midway through campand has impressed. He continues to get more touches each week, earning the start-ing position in week 2. He shared the backfield with P.J. Walker at Elizabeth HS.

hassan dixon made contributions a year ago on the scout team and in limitedspecial teams action. Dixon made his first career catch and rushed for his first careertouchdown in week 3 vs. Delaware State.

Jabo Lee spent the 2013 rehabbing from knee surgery but reinjured himselfthe first week of summer camp. He just returned to limited practice on 9/15. TheDillon, SC, product was originally recruited by Tennessee.

Zaire Williams rushed for 533 yards, the 3rd best mark by a TU freshman inschool history (behind only Bernard Pierce and Paul Palmer). Williams was sidelinedwith a bulging disc in his back.

Roy Wesley walked on this spring.david hood (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) was part of the 2014 recruiting class.

Hood saw his first collegiate action in week 3, where he ran for 62 yards on eightcarries.

Offensive LinePerhaps even more than the receiving corps, the O-line has been under major re-construction. Chris Wiesehan was hired from Hawaii to replace Allen Mogridge andfive players who combined for 41 starts are gone. Coach Weez brought two simplephilosophies in reference to the 5 starting O-linemen: “There are five steaks on thetable. The hungriest guys are gonna eat;” and “We can’t be fingers. We have to be-come a fist.”

The thumb would then be center Kyle Friend. He was team captain as a soph-omore last season and has started 24 straight games. Friend was the only player toplay every down of offense in 2013. He made the 2014 CBSportsline “Freaks” listdue to his ability to bench press 225-pounds 40 times and run a 4.95 40 and findshimself on the Rimington Award Watch List.

dion dawkins suffered a season ending foot injury vs. Louisville in 2013. Hisreturn to health has helped anchor the line in 2014 and had started every game sofar this season.

Two of the most improved players this spring were junior Shahbaz Ahmed andredshirt junior Eric Lofton. Ahmed made the switch from D-line to O-line this springand Lofton played in 13 games in the past two seasons, mostly on special teams. Both have moved into the LG and RT positions, respectively.

Brendan McGowan and Jacob Quinn each had opportunities to start in 2013and hope that experience pays dividends in 2014. McGowan has earned a spot asthe starting RG.

Leon Johnson, Semaj Reed, and Adrian Sullivan each redshirted as freshmenlast season and look to contribute this year. All saw their first collegiate action atVanderbilt, along with Peter Calderone, a redshirt-junior who plays on the FG andPAT unit.

James Mchale (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore), Jaelin Robinson (New Haven,CT/Wilbur Cross), and Aaron Ruff (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep) were all part of the2014 recruiting class. The Owls also added walkons Nick Apostolu (Springfield,PA/Springfield) and Gordon Thomas (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep).

2014 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Defensive LineCamden native Elijah Robinson returns to the area as the new defensive line

coach. Robinson played and coached at Penn State under the legendary Larry John-son.

Incumbents hershey Walton and Matt Ioan-nidis, who have each started in each game thisseason, give the Owls toughness and experienceon the interior of the line.

Averee Robinson, a true freshman whoplayed in 11 games a year ago, and Brian Carter, who redshirted in 2013, will challenge on the inside. Carter has missed most ofcamp after suffering an ankle injury. Robinson earned numerous player of the weekawards after an opening day victory at Vanderbilt where he recovered two fumblesand returned one 55 yards for a TD.

Both Bryan Osei and Kiser Terry move inside from defensive end after bulkingup during the offseason.

The Owls entered spring ball with questionsat defensive end and believe that they havefound answers in Sharif Finch and Praise Martin-Oguike. Finch played LB as a true freshman lastseason and showed a knack for rushing thepasser. Finch has forced two fumbles, one ofwhich was recovered in the endzone in week 2vs. Navy, and caught his first career interception which he returned for a 65-yardtouchdown in week 3. Martin-Oguike rejoined the team after missing two seasons.

The position remains fluid, however, as junior Brandon Chudnoff, sophomoreAvery Ellis (who redshirted a year ago after playing LB as a freshman), redshirt-sophomore haason Reddick, senior Obi Onejeme, and redshirt freshman JulianTaylor continue to improve. Ellis notched a career-high 2.0 sacks at Vanderbilt.

Joining the competition is a group of star recruits. Michael dogbe (MorrisPlains, NJ/Parsippany Hills), Jacob Martin (Aurora, CO/Cherokee Trail), and BrenonThrift (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) were all part of the 2014 recruiting class.

The Owls also added JUCO transfer Julio derosier. Derosier played last seasonat ASA in Brooklyn and hails from Homestead, FL.

LinebackersThe linebacking corps is led by Mike Siravo who returned to Temple last seasonafter six seasons at his alma mater, Boston College.

One of the most stable units on the team, the linebackers return juniors TylerMatakevich and Nate d. Smith. Both are two-year starters and leaders of not justthe unit but the team.

Matakevich, who alreadyhas a laundry list of honors as anOwl including first team all-con-ference, led the nation in solotackles last year with 8.8 pergame. He is on the Watch Listsfor nearly every major award heis eligible for including Bednarik,Butkus, Nagurski, Rotary Lombardi, and CFPA LB.

Manning the middle is Nate D. Smith who started 7 games at MLB last season, including the season’s last six. Over that 6 game stretch, Smith had 38 tackles, 6TFL, 3 sacks, and a fumble recovery returned for a TD.

Jarred Alwan and Rob dvoracek saw a good deal of action at linebacker in2013, and each has been sidelined during 2014. Dvoracek battled through injuriesto stay on the field but will be sidelined once again to start the season. Alwan playedas a true freshman, starting opening day, and continues to grow from the experi-ence. Alwan has played in every game this far and earned the start at MLB in week3.

The competition at strong-side LB has been a battle throughout camp. AveryWilliams has found a home at linebacker. The redshirt-sophomore played RB, LBand DB last season and was able to contribute on special teams. Stephaun Marshallis making the conversion from safety to linebacker similar to the one made byMichael Felton a year ago. Both are strong and athletic and will be core specialteams players in addition to seeing action on defense. Shahid Lovett (Vineland,NJ/Vineland/Lackawanna CC), a JUCO transfer was moved from SS to LB midwaythrough camp.

Buddy Brown, a redshirt freshman, was one of the more highly touted NewJersey players a year ago, is battling a knee injury that sidelined him for most of2013. Chris Smith, redshirted in 2013 and contributed to the scout team. Both haveseen game action this season.

Jared Folks (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) was part of the 2014 re-

cruiting class. The Owls also added Zach Mesday (Bordentown, NJ), Rob Ritrovato(West Chester, PA), Nick Sharga (Cherryville, PA) and Rob varner (Royersford, PA).Sharga played last season at West Virginia-Wesleyan.

Defensive BacksCoaching the secondary will be defensive coordinator Phil Snow (safeties) and

Fran Brown (cornerbacks). The defensive backfield has been transformed from a year ago due to the play

of two JUCO transfers and one freshman recruit. At the safety position, the Owls needed to re-

place FS Abdul Smith who started 12 games a yearago. The battle was expected to come from a trioof juniors.

Alex Wells (Baltimore, MD/Overlea/ASA Col-lege) and Shahid Lovett (Vineland, NJ/Vine-land/Lackawanna CC) are mid-year JUCO transfers.Wells shined throughout the spring while Lovettwas limited due to injury. Lovett has since beenmoved to LB. Wells was sidelined during week 1due to a knee injury.

Boye Aromire is a hard-hitting safety whoplayed corner as a true freshman for Virginia Techin 2011. Nate L. Smith was a highly touted recruit in 2012 and has made stridesthis offseason to compete for playing time. Will hayes saw limited action in 2013.Jihaad Pretlow, who started at SS for most of the second half of last season, re-quested a move to WR this spring. Midway through camp, when injuries attackedthe secondary, he was moved back to safety.

Shamir Bearfield (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) and Jyquis Thomas (PlantCity, FL/Plant City). Each were part of the 2014 recruiting class. The Owls have alsoadded freshman Cam hutchins (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge).

Freshman Sean Chandler (Camden, NJ/Camden) has been the season’s earlysurprise. He not only has moved up the depth chart to the starting CB spot but heimpressed his teammates enough for them to vote him into a single-digit jersey re-served for the toughest players on the team.

Cornerback Anthony Robey has more experience than the rest of the DBscombined. His 28 starts overall to begin the season were more than twice as manythan the other 19 defensive backs combined. Tavon Young, who split the startingjob with Zamel Johnson at the other corner last season, also returns with experi-ence. They continue to compete with a talented group of freshmen and juniortransfer Khiry Lucas (Cleveland, MS/East Side/Hinds CC).

Anthony davis (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) and Cequan Jefferson (Richmond,VA/Henrico) are both incoming freshmen and were part of the 2014 recruiting class.Jefferson was a mid-year transfer from Fork Union Military Academy. Also in themix are Brett Pierce, Ikeem Boyd, and Artrel Foster.

SpecialistsFor the second year in a row, the Owls need to replace one of the top NCAA

punters. Last season, Paul Layton, a University of Albany graduate with one year ofeligibility remaining, transferred to Temple to fill the void left whenBrandon McManus departed for the NFL.

McManus left big shoes to fill and the experienced Layton han-dled the punting chores admirably.

Jim Cooper, a true freshman a year ago, was tasked to handleMcManus’ kicking duties and struggled through most of the sea-son. With a year under his belt, Cooper was expected to return tothe form that made him highly recruited coming out of high school.

However, both redshirt-junior Tyler Mayes and freshmanAustin Jones (Orlando, FL) were more consistant during the sum-mer. The battle wasn’t decided until the opener where Jones gotthe job. Since Vanderbilt, Jones has been providing consistent kick-ing, scoring 23 points and going 14-14 on PATs and 3-4 on fieldgoals.

Mayes, redshirt-sophomore Colby Perry, and freshman Alex Starzyk (PleasantValley, NY) were in a summer-long battle at punter. Starzyk earned the nod at Van-derbilt and has continued to get better. So far this season, Starzyk has punted theball 14 times, having four go over 50 yards. His average in three games is 44.0 yardsper punt.

The return games starts with Khalif herbin. The dynamic receiver is always athreat with the ball in his hands. Herbin collected his first career touchdown on a84-yard punt return against Delaware State. His competition at KOR is JahadThomas, who handled the chores a year ago, and Brandon Shippen. At punt return,Jalen Fitzpatrick and John Christopher provide depth.

2014 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

On December 17, 2012, Matt Rhule returned to North BroadStreet to take the helm as head coach of the Temple Owls. Fol-lowing six seasons as one of Al Golden’s top assistants, hejoined the New York Giants as the assistant offensive linecoach in 2012. He is now in his second year as the 26th Owlshead coach and eighth on the Temple campus.

Prior to the start of his first season in charge he offeredthat his squad would produce an exciting brand of football andthey would improve as the season progressed. Rhule deliveredon those promises as the 2013 Owls produced nearly 400yards per game of offense (the second best total in school his-tory). Despite an 0-6 start to the season, the troops never sur-rendered and the team never trailed at the start of the fourthquarter in the second half of the season. The mission in the2014 offseason was to learn how to finish out games.

The State College, PA native, a former player at PennState, has 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, includingseven seasons at Temple, and six bowl games -- two with theOwls -- on his resume.

Rhule joined the Giants in the spring of 2012. Heworked closely with Pat Flaherty, who has been the offensiveline coach since 2004. They finished the 2012 campaign at 9-7, second in the NFC East, and averaged 355 yards of offenseper game. Four New York players, including guard Chris Snee, were selected to the Pro Bowl.

During his previous tenure at Temple, Rhule’s rolechanged several times. In spring 2012, he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator after serving as the assistant offensivecoordinator and tight ends coach as well as the recruiting co-ordinator under Steve Addazio in 2011. Temple’s 2012 recruit-ing class was ranked #1 in the Mid-American Conference andhelped lay the foundation for the program's transition to theBig East Conference.

Under Al Golden, Rhule was promoted to offensive co-ordinator in the spring of 2008. He also coached the TU quar-terbacks. He coached the defensive line in 2006 and served asthe quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator during the2006 and 2007 seasons. For three consecutive years, Temple’srecruiting class was ranked #1 in the MAC [2006, 2007, 2008].

In 2011, the Owls went 9-4 and played in the fourthbowl game in school history, the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, where they crushed Wyoming, 37-15 – Temple’s first postsea-son victory since the 1979 Garden State Bowl. Rhule men-tored two-time first-team All-MAC selection TE EvanRodriguez. For the second time in Rhule’s tenure, the Owls setthe Temple single-season rushing yardage record and rushingtouchdowns records behind the explosive efforts of All-MACjunior running backs Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown.

In 2010, Rhule guided the offense to the largest marginof victory in a MAC game. Helping the team to an 8-4 regu-lar-season record, the Owls recorded back-to-back winningseasons for the first time since 1978-79, including their firstwin over a BCS team. The Owls recorded the largest margin ofvictory (42 points) in a MAC game against Buffalo. A schoolrecord six offensive players earned All-MAC honors, includingrepeat first-team honorees OL Colin Madison, OL Darius Mor-ris, and RB Bernard Pierce as well as first-time honoree TE EvanRodriguez.

In 2009, Rhule’s offense helped TU win a single-seasonrecord nine consecutive games en route to a 9-4 overall recordand first-place tie in the MAC East. Under Rhule’s guidance, the Owls set the Temple single-season rushing yardage record.A school record five offensive players were named All-MAC,including three on the first team. All-American Bernard Piercerushed his way into the Temple record book, re-writing allrecords for a rookie en route to 2009 MAC Freshman of theYear honors.

In 2008, Rhule took the reins as offensive coordinator, helping the Owls to their most wins in nearly two decades. The Owls out-scored their opponents for the season for thefirst time since 1990. Rhule coached All-MAC honorees C AlexDerenthal and school record holder WR Bruce Francis, while

QB Adam DiMichele set the school record for passing touch-downs with six in the 55-52 win over Eastern Michigan. WRBruce Francis set the school records for career receiving TDs(23) and consecutive games with a reception (38).

Rhule arrived in Owl Country after spending four sea-sons as an assistant coach at Western Carolina, including threeas assistant head coach.

From 2002 to 2005, Rhule was an assistant at WesternCarolina under head coach Kent Briggs, serving as assistanthead coach during his last three seasons. In 2005, he was of-fensive line coach and run game coordinator after directingthe linebackers his first three years. Rhule was special teamscoordinator during his tenure in Cullowhee (NC). In 2005, theCatamounts led Division I-AA in kickoff returns, averaging27.44 yards per return. Sophomore Mike Malone earned firstteam All-Southern Conference honors with a 31.29 yards perkickoff return average, ranking second nationally. Two offen-sive linemen and the team’s punter captured second team all-league accolades.

In 2004, WCU ranked 12th nationally in total defenseand 15th in pass defense, largely due to the production ofRhule’s linebacker corps. The team’s top five tacklers werelinebackers in its eight man front scheme. In 2003, the Cata-mounts led the SoCon in rush defense for the first time inschool history.

Rhule arrived at Western Carolina after serving as assis-tant defensive line coach at UCLA in 2001. He assisted incoaching five Bruins that earned All PAC-10 honors as the teamposted a 7-4 record under head coach Bob Toledo.

From 1999 to 2000, Rhule served as an assistant coachat Mid-American Conference member Buffalo, directing theBulls defensive line in 2000 and working as assistant defensiveline coach in 1999. In 2000, the team’s sack total increasedfrom 12 to 27 utilizing a 3-4 alignment. Buffalo also earned itsfirst two Division I-A victories that season.

Rhule began his coaching career as a volunteer assistantat Penn State in the spring of 1998 before working at AlbrightCollege in Reading, PA for the 1998 season. At Albright, hecoached the linebackers in a 4-3 scheme and recruited west-ern and central Pennsylvania.

Rhule played four seasons at linebacker with the NittanyLions under Joe Paterno. A three-time Penn State Scholar-Ath-lete, he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 1997. He re-ceived his undergraduate degree in political science beforeearning his master’s degree in educational psychology fromBuffalo in 2003.

2014 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Temple 37, Vanderbilt 7August 28, 2014

Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, Tenn.1

NASHVILLE - After an hourand 37 minute lighting delay, the Temple defense decidedto light up Vandebilt Stadiumin a 37-7 stunner of a win infront of 31,731 fans. Thenight was highlighted by anamazing performance by thedefense, which included twoforced fumbles by sopho-more DL Averee Robinsonand only allowing the Com-modores to 107 total yardsin the first half. Overall, thedefense forced seventurnovers, including three in-terceptions - the same totalthey had all last season.

With the win, Templerecorded its first victory overan SEC team since a 20-12win at Florida on December3, 1938.

On the first drive of thegame, the Owls lookedpromising, but failed to con-vert a first down and fresh-man Alex Starzyk was forced to punt it away.

The first drive for the Commodores didn't amount to any-thing, as the 'Dores were held to only 3 total yards, withthe assistance of junior DL Matt Ioannidis and junior LBTyler Makatevich tackles on first- and second-down, re-spectively. Vanderbilt was forced to punt for the first timeafter junior DL Sharif Finch sacked QB Pat Robinette.

The Owls were the first to score after Vanderbilt RB BrianKimbrow was the victim of a Nate D. Smith forced fum-ble, which was recovered by Robinson at the Vanderbilt40. From there, a four play, 40 yard drive ended with a35-yard pass on 4th-and-5 from sophomore QB P.J.Walker to junior WR Brandon Shippen, the first catch ofhis career.

Vanderbilt opened the second quarter by punting the ballaway, after junior DL Praise Martin-Oguike sacked Robi-nette, which marked the third sack of the half for theOwls.

The Owls then tried to get a something going, after facinga 3rd-and-21 situation, after a chopblock penalty wascalled against Temple. However, the Owls were forcedto punt it away, and the 'Dores would catch a break afterfreshman punter Alex Starzyk was unable to get a gripon a high snap. Oren Burks recovered the fumble in theend zone, tying up the game.

Once the Owls got the ball back and Walker had com-pleted a pass to sophomore WR Khalif Herbin, the ballwas put back into the 'Dores hands, as the ball wasstripped and Jake Sealand recovered at midfield. Van-derbilt was unable to capitalize on the mishap.

With a little over two minutes left before the half, Walkerwas able to launch a rocket to senior WR Jalen Fitz-patrick in the endzone, following Temple second suc-cessful 4th down attempt, an 11-yard completion tosophomore WR Nate Hairston on 4th and 7.

Even though Vanderbilt had the ball back following theTemple touchdown, the 'Dores once again were unableto get any movement. New Vandy QB Stephen Rivers

was sacked and Robinsonrecovered his second fumbleof the night, running it 55-yards for the touchdown, making the halftime score21-7 in favor of the Owls.

The third quarter started withVanderbilt receiving the ball, but they were unable toscore, as Hayden Lekacz'sfield goal attempt went to theleft of the uprights.

Once again, the Owls shinedthrough the rest of the thirdquarter, as sophomre RBJahad Thomas was able torecover a fumbled punt catchby Darrius Simms. This setup Austin Jones' field goal tomake the score 24-7. Van-derbilt decided to switch uptheir quarterbacks again, bringing Johnny McCraryinto the game. However, hisfirst pass was intercepted byjunior DB Tavon Young, whowas chosen to wear the cov-

eted #1 jersey this week.

Walker was able to run the ball four yards in for anotherTemple touchdown. On the next Vanderbilt play, slightmovement was made as they were able to make it out totheir 34-yard line. But, Young was able to make his sec-ond interception. The Owls settle for a Jones field goalon the drive.

Vanderbilt once again hit a sour mark, after the kickoffwas fumbled and freshman DB Artrell Foster was able torecover it. However, the Owls were unable to score asJones was unable to put his kick through the uprights onthe first play of the 4th quarter.

The night ended for the Owls with a junior kicker TylerMayes field goal, which sealed the deal at 37-7.

Walker went 24-34 with 207 yards of passing and twotouchdowns, along with eight carries for 21 yards and an-other score. Jones was responsible for two field goalsand four point-after attempts, racking his numbers up to10 points.

2014 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Navy 31, Temple 24September 6, 2014

Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Penn.2

PHILADELPHIA - A littleover a week after Temple litup Vanderbilt Stadium, theteam seemed to dim a littlein a 31-24 loss to Navy. Thedefense could not containNavy QB Kennan Reynoldsand the Midshipmen's explo-sive offense in the Owlshome opener, in front of28,408 fans.

In their 11th meeting, andthe last one with Navy as anindependent team, the Owlsallowed the Midshipmen torush for 487 yards on 63 car-ries, while Reynolds was 4-8 for 30 yards and notouchdowns in the air.Reynolds also led Navy inrushing, with 21 carries for181 yards and two touch-downs.

For the Owls, the gamestarted off strong, as SharifFinch was able to force afumble during Navy's firstpossession and recover the ball in the end zone. Thatplay gave the Owls their second defensive touchdown ofthe season, which doubles the amount the team had lastyear. Finch also had another fumble recovery in the sec-ond quarter.

On the ground, the Owls were able to rack up 156 yards, with sophomore QB P.J. Walker leading the herd, with 13carries for 71 yards. Walker also went 29-49 and threwfor 240 yards and two touchdowns, includng one toRomond Deloatch in the very back of the end zone. Orig-inally, the call was that Deloatch was out of bounds, buta review of the play saw the Owls collect a score.

Walker threw his first interception of the season, whenhis pass was picked off by Parrish Gaines in the endzone less than a minute left in the first. From thatturnover, Navy was able to capitalize and score itssec-ond touchdown of the game.

Two seniors led the Owls both statistically and emotion-ally as Temple mounted a comeback after being down31-14. Kenny Harper led the team with eight receptionsfor 64 yards, while also picking up 55 yards on 13 carries.Jalen Fitzpatrick caught five passes for 59 yards and onetouchdown.

Defensively for the Owls, LB Nate D. Smith led the teamwith 13 tackles (9 solos), while LB Tyler Matakevich had11 solo tackles and a forced fumble. However, the strug-gles were there for Temple, as it allowed 27 first downs,24 on rushing plays, and didn't force a Navy punt untilearly in the fourth quarter. Reynolds proved to be the"tremendous player" that head coach Matt Rhule de-scribed earlier this week.

To Coach Rhule, stopping Navy's triple option wasn'tsomething that the defense failed to compete with.

"I don't think anyone blew it or missed an assignment. They just blocked those guys. They run a series of plays. If you do something, they have an answer for it. At theend of the day, you have to get off blocks and makeplays, and we just didn't make any plays today."

In total, the Midshipmen had517 offensive yards, which isalmost double what Templeallowed in week one at Van-derbilt. Navy also had threefumbles, all of which wererecovered by Temple. Ontheir second field goal at-tempt, Nick Sloan missedwide right from the Temple26-yard line, which allowedthe Owls to try and get downthe field to tie the game be-fore the quarter ended.

For the Owls, freshman AlexStarzyk had another set ofgreat numbers, as he hadthree punts of over 50 yards, with one being for 62 yards. The special teams continuedto be consistent, as fresh-men Austin Jones madethree PATs and one field goalfrom 28 yards. Last week atVanderbilt, Starzyk had a 58-yard punt and Jones was theleading scorer with 10 points(two field goals and four

PATs).

Temple went four of five in fourth-down conversions andscored in three of its four trips to the red zone. The team, however, committed six penalties for 56 yards. The Owlsonly had one fumble, which was committed by OL Bren-dan McGowan as the Owls attempted to score with lat-erals with no time left in the game.

Coach Rhule goes into a bye week with his team, want-ing to make sure that the team is ready to overcome thelosing season they had last year.

"We're beyond the point of it's okay to lose. That was lastyear. This year, it's about finding ways to win. I don't mindlosing to teams that are significantly better than us, andNavy very well might be, but that was not the way wewanted to play. It wasn't crisp, clean or physical enoughand our guys knew that."

The series with Navy is now 6-5 in favor of the Midship-men. Both Navy and Temple are 1-1 on the season.

2014 TEMPLE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

Temple 59, Delaware State 0September 20, 2014

Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Penn.3

PHILADELPHIA - An explo-sive first half by Temple, thatsaw a school record 49 pointoutput, gave them a 59-0victory against FCS oppo-nent Delaware State (0-4) infront of a crowd of 19,202.

The Owls (2-1) were able toscore touchdowns on of-fense, defense and specialteams. RB Kenneth Harperscored the first offensivetouchdown with a two-yardrun, DL Sharif Finch inter-cepted the ball for a 65 yardreturn, and DB Sam Ben-jamin blocked a punt that DBArtrel Foster was able toscoop up for a 15 yardtouchdown for the first Tem-ple score. At the half, theOwls led the Hornets, 49-0.

There were a lot of "firsts"that occurred within thegame. TE Saledeem Majorhad his first career catch inthe second quarter, WRKhalif Herbin had his first career touchdown that cameon an 84-yard punt return (the second longest in TU his-tory), and DB Khiry Lucas collected thefirst interceptionof his Temple career. The 59 point victory was the largestmargin the Owls have ever won by in the modern era(Temple beat Holy Cross 56-0 in 1974).

Finch's interception with 10:45 left in the half was the firstof his career. This is Finch's second consecutive gamewith a touchdown; against Navy in week 2, Finch forceda fumble on the Midshipmen's first drive of the game andrecovered it in the end zone. The Owls now have 14turnovers in three games (six interceptions, eight fumblerecovers), which is one shy of the total record ofturnovers the team had in 2013.

QB P.J. Walker went 10-14 for 127 yards with two touch-downs and two interceptions in the first half of the game.QB Connor Reilly came on in relief in the second half, going 6-6 for 52 yards and one fumble, which he recov-ered.

RB Hassan Dixon's first career touchdown came with10:54 left in the game, two days after he found out hisbrother, former Temple defensive lineman RaheemBrock, will be inducted into the Temple Sports Hall ofFame in October.

Harper led the team in scoring with 12 points. In additionto his two-yard run, Harper caught a five-yard pass fromWalker in the second quarter. Freshman RB David Hoodcapped off the team's rushing with eight carries for 62yards in his first game as a Temple Owl. The team totaled172 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

LB Jarred Alwan and DE Jacob Martin both collected 5tackles to lead the team. The team registered nine tack-les for a loss, totaling 20 yards.

PK/P Jim Cooper Jr. had 10 kickoffs for 626 yards andfive touchbacks, one shy of his season-high six in 2013.Freshman K Austin Jones stayed with his consistentways, as he went 7-7 in point after attempts.

LB Tyler Matakevich, who had two tackles in the game,

said that the victory anddominating team perform-ance is something that theteam is starting to work hardon.

"It was a great feeling. Thisyear it's just the standard. We just have to play ourprocess and do our job, andthat's what we've beendoing," said Matakevich."We're been buying into theprocess and finishing all theway through to the fourthquarter no matter who we'replaying."

DL Sharif Finch believes thatthe difference between theteam this year and last yearis the teams ability to forceinterceptions and fumbles.

"We put pressure on creat-ing turnovers. This had beenour focus in camp and prac-tice this year, so creatingturnovers is not a surprise to

us because we have been doing this," said Finch.

Delaware State collected just 93 total yards on offense,67 of them net passing with QB Gilbert Rivera going 9-19 with three interceptions. This was the Owls secondgame of the season with three interception (first was atVanderbilt). The Hornets were also forced to punt ninetimes.

With this victory, Temple has their first shutout since Oc-tober 2011 against Buffalo (35-0); scored 60 or morepoints in a game since November 2013, when the Owlsbeat Army, 63-32; and scored 20 or more points in a halfsince last year's contest at Memphis, when they had 24points in the second half.
