Temple Grandin- Biography

Inspiration to many, especially autistic populations!One of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry.I will touch on her early life with her disability, her accomplishments later in life, and what she is doing now. Chose to write about her after recently seeing the movie Temple Grandin from 2010. The movie is based on her life as a teenager and how she started her career.

Early Life

Born on August 29th, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts.Diagnosed with autism at 2 years old, but was considered a form of brain damage at that time.Did not speak until she was 4 years old.Extensive speech therapy and a nanny that helped her develop social skills.

Early LifeHypersensitivity to noise and other stimuli.She wears soft comfortable clothes to balance that.Primarily a visual thinker and has an extreme sensitivity to detail and changes in the environment.

Early LifeAs a teenager, she developed a squeeze machine.Applied pressure along her body that calmed her anxiety- therapeutic.The idea came from spending time on her Aunt and Uncles farm. Similar to the cow container where they administer immunizations.

Early Life

She was teased throughout middle and high school.Verbal tics and strange social behavior.Found a mentor who recognized her interests and abilities.

Middle Life

Degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce college.Masters degree in animal science from Arizona State University.Doctoral Degree in animal science from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

Middle LifeDesigner of humane livestock handling facilities that are used in the United States, and many other countries.

Middle LifeShe has written over 400 articles in scientific journals and livestock periodicals. She has been on radio and TV shows, and featured in many different magazines.

Recent LifeInfluential2010 TED Lecture

Recent LifeShe has written several books. Two are on the New York Times best seller list!

Recent LifeAutism Advocate and speaks around the world!

Recent LifeIn 2010, HBO released the movie, Temple Grandin. Won 7 Emmys and a Golden Globe!

Dr. Temple Grandin-To these people, it is incomprehensible that the characteristics of autism can be modified and controlled. However, I feel strongly that I am living proof that they can.
