This month we complete the Jewish cal-endar and then start all over again. But I hear you asking, don't we do that in the fall with Rosh Hashana? Yes we do, but the month of Tishrei is the New Year according to the rabbis, whereas Nissan, the month of our redemption from Mitz-rayim (Egypt), is the New Year accord-ing to the Torah. That is why the Torah refers to Tishrei as the seventh month, alluding to its extra holiness by dint of its association with the number seven, the number most associated with holiness. Now the Hebrew month corresponding to March is Adar, not Nissan. So why are we even discussing this now? Because they are intimately connected, couplets in a circular chain, the beginning and the end. Adar contains the holiday of Purim, while Nissan contains Passover. Not only do they each begin with the letter pey, but they each represent the idea of P'dut or Purkana, two words which each mean "deliverance," in Hebrew and in Aramaic respectively. But the rabbis most often use the word geula, or redemption, when discussing these two months, the months of Adar and Nissan. The idea is that the year should both begin and end with the con-cept of redemption! This idea is even more relevant in a sh'nat m'uberet, or leap year. Why, when we add an extra month of Adar to the calendar in a leap year, is Purim always celebrated in Adar 2 but never in Adar 1? Because of the need to have back to back geula! The year must end with the idea of redemp-tion just as it begins with redemption.

Edition 569 March 2012 Adar/Nisan 5772 A monthly publication of Temple Israel of the Poconos
This month our Hebrew School is hosting both our Gala Purim Celebration featuring the Megillah reading, to which the whole community is invited, as well as our annual Chocolate Seder, to which all our Temple Israel fami-lies are invited, as a prelude to Passover which will be here before you know it! Both Purim and Passover feature wine as a central element. We drink wine at our Pu-rim Sudah (Purim Feast) and we drink wine at the Passover Seder. Some follow the cus-tom of drinking so much wine on Purim that we should be at the level where we mix up "blessed Mordechai" with "cursed Haman." My students learned of the gematria (numerology) equivalence between yayin (wine) and sod (secret). The letters of each word each add up to the number seventy, thus they necessarily share a mystical link-age. When wine goes in, all secrets come out! Seventy was the number of souls who went down to Egypt. What secret did they learn? That there will be two great redemp-tions for Israel. An imminent redemption from Egypt and an ultimate eschatological redemption at the end of days. May Israel today be soon redeemed as we eliminate the modern day Haman of Persia who wishes to eradicate us, just as the Haman of old attempted history's first genocide against the Jewish people. Amen. A freiliche Purim to all!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT ……
Dear Temple Family, I have been putting this off for some time as I was not sure what I was going to write. First of all, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for having the confidence in, and elected me to, finish the term as President of Temple Israel. I hope I can meet their expectations. For that, I am calling on the entire Congregation for their assistance. A great big Todah (thank you) and Mazel Tov to our past president, Chuck Feinstein. He has left Temple Israel and moved to Edmonton, Alberta Canada taking on the position as Executive Director at a Temple there. We know he will do a great job. I have been sitting here for the past few days looking through old newsletters from when Barry was President. I realized that I could not use his President’s Messages as a guide for my own.. There were many activities going on and many volunteers then. We need volunteers and fresh ideas for programs. I need our Hebrew School families to help me with ideas of what their children may like to do. Please call me or send me e-mails with your suggestions. As I am writing this, it is the middle of February and we just had a dusting of snow – a very rare sight this winter. We are planning for Purim and beyond. We will not be having Second Seder for Passover this year - it is a Saturday evening and we are unable to prepare food that day. But we did not want anyone to miss the great cooking from our kitchen. We will have a Community Passover dinner on Sunday, April 8th. Lastly, I must thank my husband for not calling me ‘crazy’ when I volunteered for this position. He surely knows what is involved. Shalom Suzanne Tremper, President

In a previous article, I pointed out that Judaism rested on three pillars: study, worship, and righteous behavior. I also underscored the primary importance of study as leading the way because it provided the religious knowledge and the inspiration. According to the historian Solomon Grayzel, "Scholarship must rest in the hands of the scholar...To study the Torah, which meant all of Jewish learning, became one the foremost of Jewish ideals." (History Of The Jews, p.286). As the Jews learned more and more about their religion, they realized the importance of sharing and preserving this precious heritage. The period of exile in Babylonia and the Roman conquest and occupation of the Holy Land imperiled this religious heritage by dispersing the Jewish people. Worship was their response to this dire predicament. For example, during the exile in Babylonia, the Jews expressed their devotion to Judaism by meeting in the house of a leading Jew for religious services. Attendance at the humble house of worship increased to such an extent that roomier structures were needed, resulting in the development of synagogues. The service of these early synagogues was led at first by the most pious and scholarly Jews in the community, and later–through the establishment of academies for advanced studies in Judaism – by the rabbis. We presume that the service consisted of sung and recited prayers. The reading of portions of the Torah, and most likely, an inspirational sermon to sustain the spirit of the homesick exiles. Collective worship therefore served and continues to serve Judaism in many ways: it preserved the Jewish religion during the period of exile and dispersion; it reminded the scattered Jews of their oneness as a chosen people; and it seeded the idea of giving worship a home. Righteous living, the third of the sustaining pillars of Judaism, represents the culmination. With righteous behavior, we reach the fulfillment of the process begun by study and worship. At this point, we have learned the principal moral precepts of Judaism. Some of us have memorized the Ten Commandments and many other moral imperatives of the Torah. We now have an abundance of guidelines to direct us to our goal. For all Jews, however, including those unable to memorize the enormous amount of material studied, there is the simple formula for defining the word "mensch," which contains many of the important moral concepts of what constitutes righteous behavior.

YOM HASHOAH CANDLES
It's been almost seventy years since the last Nazi concentration camp was liberated, and the Holocaust that claimed six million Jewish lives came to an end. To ensure that the six million did not die in vain and that the Holocaust never happens again, Temple Israel of the Poconos will join Jews throughout North America by participating in the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Program sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs in cooperation with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. As the years past, the memories of those who fell victim to the ultimate hate crime must not diminish. That's why we are encouraging your family and every family in Temple Israel of the Poconos, in Stroudsburg, in Pennsylvania, and in North America to light at least one Yellow Candle on the night of Wednesday, April 18, 2012. When each family lights a Yellow Candle it will increase the awareness of the Holocaust, and perpetuate our commit-ment to our people. The memory is important because the number of Holocaust survivors is dimin-ishing with each passing day. As we lose this precious link, those who deny the Holocaust gain strength. Sadly, a portion of the children of this generation lack any knowledge of the Holocaust. Yom Hashoah candles are a highly visible symbol for keeping the flame alive. Their color recalls the badges Jews were forced to wear in Nazi-occupied Europe, but their flame inspires hope that we can yet make our world a toler-ant place to live.
In the spirit of remembrance, we encourage all of you to give Tzedakah (Charity) as a form of respect to those who did not survive the Holocaust. With your donation we will continue to teach the genera-tions to come. Through your generosity we will continue to purchase and supply candles each and every year and pledge our collective support to organizations dedicated to keeping the memory alive. ************************************************************************************************** Yes I would like to pre-order _____ Yom Hashoah Yellow Candles. I pledge a minimum donation of $5 for each candle ordered. Name___________________________________________

ASK THE RABBI Dear Rabbi,
My life was a mess, and so recently I went to my local Rebbetzin. I was telling her how upsetting everything was, and she said, "I want you to go home and start lighting on Shabbos."
Six years ago, my husband and I were losing our house, and with the money we made on the house, I promised myself I was going to buy myself a really nice pair of shabbos candle-sticks. So in between the moves, two storage units, an art studio, and moving into mom's house, I couldn't find them. This whole time I didn't know what happened to them.
Today, I opened a box out of all of my boxes, thinking I was going to find maybe my challah mixer, and instead of my mixer, I found my Candle sticks, erev Shabbos!!! Do you think it's a sign?
Sincerely,
Betty
Dear Betty,
Yes, it's a sign! A sign from Heaven! A sign from all your bubbes stretching back in time all the way back to Sarah Imenu, that they are watching over you and encouraging you to take on this awesome mitzvah! Lighting candles will bring so much blessing into your life!
I bless you with much hatzlacha rabba (great success) as you chart your new spiritual course. So many blessings are opening up for you now as you take on this foundational mitzvah of Judaism. I am so proud of you!
~Rabbi Melman
PS. I see that you said your Rebbetzin said you should light candles on Shabbos. It is for-bidden to light once Shabbos has begun. I think she meant you should light before Shabbos! We light 18 minutes before sunset, as a precaution, lest we mistakenly light once Shabbos has begun.

Remember a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, bnei mitzvah or any other occasion you want to note for a relative or friend. You can also place a dedication in someone’s memory. A nameplate with the donor, recipient, and occasion will be inserted. The minimum donation is $50.

Do you need a Mi Sheberach Recited?
When you can’t make services, but would like a prayer said on behalf of someone important to you, please don’t hesitate to call the synagogue and leave a message
on the Temple answering machine for Rabbi Melman so that your prayers will be included in our services.

FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE…..
we offer you a challenge!
We need everyone to help with this. Surely you know individuals and families who have no affiliation with a Synagogue.
Encourage them to become members of our Temple Israel Family!
If every family brings in one individual or family,
think of the possibilities!
At Temple events, be they regular Shabbat Services or a social occasion, introduce yourself to anyone you don’t recognize. You’ll make new friends
and assist us in enlarging our family.
YOU CAN BE PART OF OUR SUCCESS!!
