Temple News On Wednesday, March 9, 2011, we begin
one of the most practical - and powerful -
times of the Christian liturgical year. Lent
provides us an opportunity to open our
personal maintenance schedule and take a
close look at ourselves as we journey
towards eternal life. While we face
difficulties it is important to admit that this
spiritual life is not an easy endeavor
because of our wounded human nature.
True, Baptism washes away original sin, but
we do not have complete control over
ourselves. Paul brilliantly describes this
continual battle and conflict as an inward
struggle (Romans 7: 14-25), a treasure in a
vessel of clay (2 Corinthians 4: 7-18), and a
thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12: 7-10).
Because of original sin, an inner force will
always move us in the wrong direction.
Continual effort is necessary to control the
inner movement of our ego, and allow the
presence of grace to take control of our
thoughts, desires and actions. The battle of
the spiritual life is like walking in a river
against the current. If we do not continue
to walk or grab on to a rock, the current will
carry us in the opposite direction. Lent
provides us with an excellent opportunity to
strengthen ourselves so that we can keep
walking against the current.
A successful Lent requires us to develop a
serious plan of action. As we continue
to follow our 2011 theme ― Spiritual
Transformers: Making a difference In
the Kingdom of God‖, this year’s focus
is on The Change In Me. Inasmuch as
Romans 12:2 instructs us to ―Do not
conform any longer to the pattern of
this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will
be able to test and approve what God’s
Will is – His good, pleasing and perfect
will. (NIV)
We cannot manipulate God to fulfill
our desires but Prayer and Fasting for
these 40 days can move God to fulfill
His intended Will over our lives.
Prayer and Fasting make up the most
critical weapons of Spiritual Warfare in
our lives. Don’t take this time lightly, it
may mean the difference between His
death and your eternal Life by
following the footprints of sacrifice
displayed by Jesus the Christ. Our
Prayers are poured out for you during
these 40 days that positive changes may
appear in each of us for the Glory of
God.

Points to Ponder
Surely what a man does when
he is taken off his guard is the
best evidence for what sort of
man he is. If there are rats in a
cellar, you are most likely to
see them if you go in very
suddenly. But the suddenness
does not create the rats; it only
prevents them from hiding. In
the same way, the suddenness
of the provocation does not
make me ill-tempered; it only
shows me what an ill-tempered
man I am.
-C. S. Lewis
When you resort to shouting
in conflict, you are reacting in
the flesh. You have lost control
of the only person you can
control: yourself.
- Neil T. Anderson
We also want to know
about those who have made
the honor roll. Let’s not forget
baby announcements, bible
humor, or recipes.
If you have a story or
idea that you would like to
incorporate into the newsletter,
forward the story to
leave the idea on the
secretary’s desk.
Do you know someone
who is doing great things in the
community, school, or
church? Nominate them to be
the Outstanding Disciple of
the Month. This person can
be a youth or an adult.
Don’t forget to
recognize those celebrating an
anniversary, graduation (from
high school, college, or any
other), or special occasion.

The Dignity of Man
Do you ever go through seasons when you just don't
feel like your life counts for very much? Everything
seems about as pointless as a first-quarter NBA score
in November. People treat you with less interest than a
flight attendant's lecture on oxygen masks and exit
doors.
But what's easy to forget at times like these is that your
value is not something other people can assign to you.
They don't get to grade this. You have been given great
worth by your Creator. Your significance is inborn.
Think of the dignity you possess, merely by being a
product of God's design. You're able to reason and
make choices. You can appreciate beauty and feel
emotion. You have the ability within your reach to
bless others, to extend your influence and impact into
another person's life.
You have even been given the privilege of
communicating with your heavenly Father—a right he
wasn't obligated to offer you, but one he freely extends
because of his rich, abiding love for you. Everything
about you has been "woven together" in his all-wise
mind and heart. Each day of your life has been
"written" down by the one who made you. (Psalm
139:15-16). That's how valuable you are to him.
Instead of being bombarded by all the ways life has
mistreated you or what a mess you've made, make this
a day to celebrate what God has invested in you. You
are worth far more than you realize.
Pray this prayer: I do get down on myself a lot, Lord. I have a hard time imagining that you love me. Your word says that you love me and care about my well
being because I am one of your children. Reveal yourself and your love to me Lord in a new way. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
You want to make a difference in your world?
Live a holy life:
Be faithful to your spouse.
Be the one at the office who refuses to cheat.
Be the neighbor who acts neighborly.
Be the employee who does the work and doesn’t
complain.
Pay your bills.
Do your part and enjoy life.
Don’t speak one message and live another.
People are watching the way we act more than
they are listening to what we say.
- Max Lucado

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the
word, that you may grow thereby.‖ (1 Peter 2:2)
Starting in January, we began a one year bible reading plan. This plan is designed to help us not only read
through the new Testament in a year, but to help us apply God’s word to our everyday life and grow have a deeper
relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Since this plan includes only the New Testament, each segment can be read in 5-8 minutes, and will allow you
the opportunity to actually study the portion of Scripture you are reading, instead of reading only…
If you choose to dig deeper, (and hopefully you will!), a 20-30 minute/day study can increase your knowledge of the
Bible as well as your love for the Lord. The goal should not be ―quantity‖ (how much you read), but ―quality‖ in what
you read, learn and apply. The reading plan is divided into 52 weeks, with readings for each day.
Follow these steps in Bible study:
Pray - confess sins before you begin; ask for the Holy Spirit's illumination of God's Word
Observe - read the text over & over (repetition); take notes, ask questions
Study - underline key words and/or phrases. Ask, "What is the passage saying?"
Evaluate - cross-reference the text with other portions of Scripture. Find what others have said about the text
(commentaries, Bible dictionaries)
Meditate - what principle or command can be applied? Is there a promise or basic doctrinal truth to lay hold of?
Remember,
DO what you have learned.

About the path of God…
Psalms 23:3 …he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Every day we walk a path of our own
choosing. Sometimes it seems we have
no choice about our path because of
many of life's circumstances. However,
we do have choices we can make
about how we respond to what life
puts in front of us on our daily path.
In spite of the daily obstacles we face,
God always calls upon us to do the
right thing. God calls upon us to be
holy and devout in all we say, think,
and do. God calls upon us to walk His
daily path leading us to Christ's Cross.
In your daily life, God will always call
upon you to walk His narrow path
without sin. When you walk His
narrow path, God is glorified in your
life so your life shines out to others.
Walking God's path, your life
becomes an inspiration to
others even when you are
struggling to find inspiration
yourself.
About having no fear…
Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
Today in the life. . .
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads
me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the
days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Verse of the Month
There is a great deal of fear in the
world. There is war, rumors of war,
disease, famine, plague, economic
collapse, and the list seems to grow day
by day. For many people, the greatest
fear is the fear of death. Death is the
common denominator of all people, all
races, and all cultures. The shadow of
death hangs over every life. In addition,
evil lurks around every turn in the path
of life. The realities of death and evil
bring fear into our life. However, with
God the father, with Jesus Christ the
Son, and with the Holy Spirit, we do
not need to be afraid. No matter what
life brings us, no matter what kinds of
trouble and problems we face today,
the power of God is within us. If we
want, the full power of God will
overshadow death and evil in our lives.
When we have Christ as a real force of
love in our heart, we are not afraid
because His love drives out fear.
