Shavuot is the Hebrew word for “weeks” andrefers to the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, which occurs sevenweeks after Passover.

Shavuot, like many other Jewish holidays, beganas an ancient agricultural festival that marked theend of the spring barley harvest and the beginningof the summer wheat harvest. In ancient times,Shavuot was a pilgrimage festival during whichIsraelites brought crop offerings to the Temple inJerusalem.

YIZKOR means… “may (God) remember,” fromthe root word zakhor - remember. It is thememorial service, recited four times a year inthe synagogue, after the Torah reading on YomKippur day, Shemini Atzeret (the end ofSukkot), the eighth day of Passover, and the second day of Shavuot.

The Four Parts of YizkorA series of readings and prayers, recited andchanted, that sets the mood for the solemnservice.Paragraphs that individuals silently read,recalling the deceased. The memorial prayer for the deceased, the ElMale Rahamim (God full of compassion), ischanted by the cantor. This is essentially thesame prayer said at Jewish funerals.A special prayer, Av HaRahamim (Ancestorof Mercies), is recited by the congregation asa memorial for all Jewish martyrs. Some alsoadd Psalm 23.

In Our Temple FamilyWe are very proud to share that NFTY-NW had their regionalelections this past weekend and our very own Claire Frankelwas elected President. Claire will lead a board of 6 other teensfrom our region, comprised of almost 200 teens from all over theNorthwest, spanning Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, andof course, BC. Claire will oversee the planning and execution ofall NFTY-NW regional events in 2018-19, while representingReform Judaism in the Northwest at the national level. Amongother things, Claire will work to increase leadership opportunityfor more teens, improve teen engagement in more remote congregations, and create an environment that helps connectwith Reform Judaism, themselves, and each other.

Claire worked incredibly hard in preparation for this election, and for us this represents a huge milestone in terms ofthe representation of our youth in the Reform movement.Historically we have not had many teens on the Regional Board,and to the best of my knowledge this is the first time a teen fromVancouver has become NFTY-NW President. We are very excitedand proud of Claire’s achievement, and we will provide whateversupport she needs to make her term as successful as possible.

On Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the HolocaustMemorial Day – six candles were lit in a ceremony at the B.C. legislature to honourthe six million Jewish men, women and children killed by German soldiers between1933 and 1945.

Multiculturalism Minister Teresa Wat andMLA for Vancouver-Langara Moira Stilwellwere joined by representatives from TheCentre for Israel and Jewish Affairs,Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre,Victoria Holocaust Remembrance, RabbiCarey Brown and Education Society, andmore than 35 Holocaust survivors to remember and honour the victims of thelargest act of systematic genocide in history.

“With the passage of time and fewer survivors in our midst, preserving the memories of those who overcame the horrors of the Holocaust has never been more important,” said Yael Levin, manager ofCommunity Relations, The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Pacific Region. “Today, throughout B.C.and around the world we bear witness to the strength and courage of those who survived and rememberthose who did not.”

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of prisoners from the Auschwitz concentration campwhere at least 1.1 million prisoners were killed. COUNTING OF THE OMERIn the period between Passover and Shavuot, wecount the Omer. Because this is a holiday celebratinggrain harvests, we have a wonderful tradition atTemple Sholom of bringing donations of cereal products each time we come to the synagogue. Ourstudents are encouraged to participate in this TikkunOlam project filling the Food Bank basket with breakfast cereal, fruit bars and other healthy cerealproducts. We will be collecting until Shavuot,Sunday May 20th.

HAVDALAH SLEEPOVER This annual event will be held in May for students inKindergarten to Grade 2. We will bring sleeping bagsand pillows and spend the night at the synagoguewhile learning more about havdalah with crafts,songs, and of course, hot chocolate! SIMON KRAKOVSKY & LIRON GERTSMANSIMON was selected as thewinner of the Dreamercategory for his work withUBC students to interviewand record the stories oflocal seniors; he plans toutilize the award to helppublish.

In addition to congratulating Simon and Liron,Temple Sholom would like to recognize all thoseyouth leaders who submitted inspiring applica-tions. All of these teenagers have received thepriceless award of having contributed to TikkunOlam, and the world will benefit greatly from all oftheir magnificent projects in the years ahead.

Simon and Liron will be honoured on May 6th atour “Inspired to Act” fundraising event, an eveningof laughter, music and inspiration. The event will feature the comedy of Yuk Yuk’s co-founder Mark

Breslin, plus the music of young local artists LielAmdour and Adrienne Robles.

Mark will have the room in stitches, as he shines alight on how Jews have turned to humour as a survival mechanism over centuries and howhumour is a vehicle for Tikkun Olam.

The Tikkun Olam Youth Awards are funded by thegenerosity of Dr. Neil and Michelle Pollock, andTemple Sholom would like to thank them for theircontinued support of our community and our children.

Shavuot is also called Chag Habikkurim - The Day ofthe First Fruits. This name refers to the fact that thisholiday was originally a wheat harvest festival thatoccurred on the 50th day after Passover. Israelitesbrought offerings of the first fruits of their fields to theTemple in Jerusalem.

Shavuot is one of the three major harvest festivals inthe Jewish calendar. These are called the shlosha regalim - three pilgrimage festivals. This name isderived from the fact that one was supposed to bringan offering to the Temple in Jerusalem for each ofthese three festivals. The other two harvest festivalsare Passover and Sukkot.

Larger size clothing suitable for office wear andpurses are the most needed as donations. We havereceived some unacceptable clothing and householdgoods which increases the work for the volunteers.So please, NO casual clothing, NO householditems and NO men’s or children’s clothing.

SISTERHOOD’S SOCIAL ACTION PROJECTS

q Walk in the Woods: Our next walk will take place the firstSunday of May, May 6 at 9:50am on Newt Loop trail. Thetrailhead is on the West side of Blanca Street at 13 th Avenue. Thereis no need to book, just show up in good walking gear, rain or shine,to enjoy Spring. After the walk those who wish meet for tea or coffeeat a local cafe. The intention is that the afternoon will be clear.

If anyone has a favourite trail that they wish to share with us, 40 to60 minutes long, let us know. Use it or lose it.

Rabbi Stacey Blank, the spiritualleader of Congregation TzurHadassah, our sister congregationin Israel, visitedTemple Sholom inlate March for a SisterhoodShabbat weekend. Many rich connections were made betweenRabbi Blank and our community,

and we look forward to strengthening this special relationship. We caught up with her during her visit tolearn more about what’s happening in Tzur Hadassah.

Well known for her outreach work and for leading aninspired, growing Reform community in Israel, Rabbi Blankis about to start her sixth year with Congregation TzurHadassah (CTH). Tzur Hadassah is a small thriving community near Jerusalem, nestled in the beautiful JudeanHills and home to approximately 2000 families and growing.CTH, the only non-Orthodox synagogue in the entire MatehYehudah region, is rooted in Reform practices and embracesa broad, pluralistic approach.

Rabbi Blank sees her role as the progressive rabbi both forthe synagogue and the region: “Many Israelis hold a secularview of Judaism and associate the synagogue with Orthodoxpractices.” One of her primary objectives has been to shiftperceptions, so that Jews see participation in synagogue lifeas an opportunity to embrace their experience of Judaism ina new light. CTH currently has 50 member families and regularly welcomes residents to celebrate holidays and theirlife cycle events. “The goal is to embrace everyone’s tradition, so people feel they belong and can connect toJudaism in their own way,” notes Rabbi Blank.

In addition to regular services and b'nai mitzvah, CTH offersadult education programs, including Torah study, Jewishtheology, peer-led Jewish philosophy classes, as well as storysessions for kids and a mother/daughter bat mitzvah course.Rabbi Blank is especially proud of the synagogue’s publicpre-school, which offers a pluralistic approach to education.Thirty children are currently enrolled (another 30 have graduated) and plans for a second classroom are underway.

Like Temple Sholom, CTH is committed to social justiceissues. Inspired by the belief, “Better a close neighbour thana distant friend,” Rabbi Blank is starting a dialogue group forwomen from Tzur Hadassah and Battir, a nearby Palestinianvillage in the West Bank. She is also exploring opportunitiesto dialogue with residents of Beitar Ilit, a neighbouring ultra-Orthodox settlement. Her goal is to help to break down

Closer to home, Rabbi Blank also has been workingclosely with Rabbi Dan and Rabbi Brown to breakdown any barriers and to forge new connectionsbetween Tzur Hadassah and Vancouver youth. Thispast winter, Temple Sholom grade seven studentsand Tzur Hadassah grade six students participated ina mirrored curriculum. Over a six-week period, bothgroups learned about bar/bat mitzvah, and what it’slike to be Jewish in both countries. The course culminated in a video conference, where the studentsexchanged ideas and cemented new friendships inreal time. The program was a great success, and similar joint learning programs are in development.

Looking ahead, Rabbi Blank looks forward to welcoming Temple Sholom members to TzurHadassah this August during Temple Sholom’s Israeltour, and invites anyone who is visiting Israel in thefuture to be in touch and come to visit. She’s alsointent on continuing to build connections betweenour two congregations, and within Tzur Hadassahand beyond: “There is no replacement for face-to-face contact. The more we offer opportunitiesfor connection and shared experiences, the more wecan build open, flourishing communities.”

CANADIANS HELPING ASYLUM SEEKERS IN ISRAELThe grassroots organization, CHAI (CanadiansHelping Asylum Seekers in Israel), as well as several individuals within the Canadian Jewishcommunity, are seeking support for their effortson behalf of African asylum seekers in Israel livingin fear of deportation.

Those efforts include asking community membersto appeal to the Canadian government to pressurethe Israeli government to rescind its deportationorder; asking community members to appeal tothe Canadian government to allocate more spacesfor African asylum seekers to come to Canada asrefugees; and asking community members forfinancial donations in support of private refugeesponsorships.
