The Golden Rule

by Rabbi Rick Schechter

The Rabbi?s Reflections

When asked to distil l the essence of Jewish teachings into a few sentences, the exemplary Jewish leader and teacher of the f irst century before the Common Era, Hillel, famously said: ?What is hateful to you, don?t do to any person. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary.? (Talmud Shabbat 31a)

A version of Hillel?s teaching can be found in Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Confucianism. For good reason it?s referred to as The Golden Rule and it?s pervasive throughout religions and cultures. Treating others the way that we want to be treated is a simple yet powerful approach to living. It easily helps us decide how to act toward people? whether in one-on-one situations or more generally as a society.

Our society today needs the wisdom of The Golden Rule in the tragic immigrant situation at our southern border. As we know, reports of U.S. detention facilit ies for migrant families and children revealed inhumane and dangerous conditions: massive overcrowding, poor sanitation, inadequate health care, trauma to children and their families. The news reports and images on TV were deeply disturbing and heartbreaking.

?What is hateful to you, do not do to another.? It doesn?t take more than that to guide us toward justice and compassion in this humanitarian crisis within our country.

In last month?s Scribe, our Sisterhood Immediate Past President Ruth Lambert movingly wrote about the children in detention centers and how it relates to her and her son, Charlie, who is from Guatemala. I strongly encourage you to read her article if you haven?t yet, and if this issue is meaningful to you, to follow the weblinks in that piece as well as exploring the issue of immigrant justice at the Religious Action of Reform Judaism (www.rac.org.) The RAC is part of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), of which Temple Sinai is an aff il iate. On the RAC website, you will f ind beneficial background and legislative information, and various things that people can do to help.

Our Torah teaches, ?You shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the feelings of the stranger, having yourselves been strangers in the land of Egypt.? (Exodus 23:9) This reminds us? along with Hillel?s Golden Rule of the essence of Torah? where we might stand.

Shalom uvracha,

The President's Message

SEPARATION AND CONNECTION

by Maggie Freed

The Temple Sinai Board is interested in hearing from the congregation regarding any issue that may concern you. Feel free to contact us as follows:

President: Maggie Freed - [email protected] Exec.VP: Steve Abrams - [email protected] First VP: Harley Haas - [email protected] Second VP: Phill ip Hain - [email protected] Treasurer: Dan Heller - [email protected] Recording Sec: Pat Smith - [email protected] Financial Sec: Larry Cohen - [email protected]

The Hebrew word for ?holy? (kadosh) is often translated as ?distinct, separate, or dif ferent,? even as the word for ?sacrif ice? (korban) more literally means ?that which makes close or draws near.? The ancient Israelites used animal and other sacrif ices to draw close to the divine. And then they were instructed to be holy (separate). An interesting contrast!

As modern Reform Jews, we replace sacrif ice with prayer as a way to fulf il l the instruction in the Torah: You shall be holy, for I the lord your God am holy (Lev. 19:2). Our prayer replaces that ancient sacrif ice to connect us to the divine, but to be holy, separate: there is a mystery in that distinction.

At Temple Sinai we strive for community, for relationships that bring us together in a holy community. We may f ind it in working together as part of a committee, socializing with the families in our children?s religious school classes, in a chavurah, learning together, or praying together in the

sanctuary. No matter how separate we may be our temple community is here to draw us into relationships.

As the Israeli writer, Amos Oz, ref lected:

?No man is an island, wrote the great Donne. The novelist among us adds: true, no man is an island, but we are all peninsulas. Partially on our own, surrounded by the dark waters, and partially l inked to a continent, to other peninsulas, to the plural noun.?

--(Amos Oz, Jews and Words [New Haven: Yale University Press: 2012], pp. 187-188).

May we all f ind meaningful connections here at Temple Sinai.

Happy end of the summer!

SisterhoodMatters

by Laura Goldsmith

Hello my name is Laura Goldsmith and I am your new Sisterhood President. My family and I joined Temple Sinai six years ago. My husband, Walter Galicia, and our children Gabriel and Claire had not belonged to a synagogue, but we did attend High Holy Days at Temple Sinai for a few years prior to joining. One day we were walking

home from Yom Kippur services and our daughter Claire announced that she wanted to study for her bat mitzvah. So what else could we do? The Galicia-Goldsmith family became members!

I joined Sisterhood four years ago to meet other Jewish women in my community and to connect with like-minded women. Temple Sinai?s Sisterhood provided this connection. When my daughter wanted to attend a Jewish summer camp, we joined Campership and being a Sisterhood member was part of this commitment. Within this group, I have become part of a group of strong leaders who join together to strengthen our synagogue?s families. We need you to join us and share your skil ls with us!

I am excited to begin this job, and I?m looking forward to hearing from you as to what you want from your Sisterhood. Our Board members will be working diligently to provide traditional activit ies and introduce new creative new programs. We will be working in teams to share our jobs, so I would love to introduce you to the Board Members:

-President, Laura Goldsmith ([email protected])

-Vice Presidents, Cathleen Richland ([email protected]) and Julie Bank ([email protected])

-Immediate Past President, Ruth Lambert ([email protected])

-Treasurer, Elizabeth Rausch ([email protected])

-Recording Secretary, Janet Morgan ([email protected])

Please reach out to me or any of the Sisterhood Board members with your ideas for programs, speakers, or other ways that we can serve you. We want you to be a part of Temple Sinai?s Sisters as we move into this wonderful new year.

Keep a look out for your Sisterhood Membership letter in the mail! Also, look for next month's article with our new committees... maybe there's one for you!

In closing, I would like to share a reading from ?Covenant Of The Heart?

The future is ours to create,

What a terrifying thought!

Who are we to be entrusted with such a mission,

such a challenge, such a responsibility?

How do we know what to do?

Where do we start?

We call upon our heritage-

Rich and embracing, filled with love and support,

Never defeating, always reassuring.

It strengthens us in mind, body, and soul.

Bar Mitzvah Profile

Nathan JohnsonNathan Johnson, son of temple members, Deb and Doug Johnson, will celebrate his bar mitzvah on Saturday, August 3rd. Nathan is one of those rare kids ? a young teen who appears to be equally comfortable speaking with adults as he is with his peers. He?s smart and caring and his parents say he has a dry and sarcastic sense of humor which sometimes comes across as beyond his years.

Nathan will be entering 7th grade this fall at Oakwood School. His favorite subject is history, because he loves ?learning about the history of humanity and civil izations.? He?s a very serious reader, and his favorite book is Prodigy, the second book in the Legend Book series by Marie Lu. He likes that book ?because it has interesting characters and a phenomenal plot.? Knowing that, it should come as no surprise that his favorite author is Marie Lu, because he?s read all of her books, and thinks they are all great. Outside of school, Nathan also likes to play soccer and watch The Simpsons. ?My sister Julia has always played soccer,? Nathan explained, ?and when I was younger I watched her play. When I got old enough, I joined AYSO, and I?ve been playing soccer ever since.? Watching The Simpsons is a hobby that started about two years ago. And if all that didn?t keep him busy enough, Nathan also plays the f lute.

The Johnson family is a close one, and Nathan enjoys hanging out with his older sister, Julia. He especially l ikes it when he can talk her into playing a family game of ?Civil ization 5,? a computer game he loves. He also likes playing with their ?adorable and awesome? guinea pigs named Ewok and Vinnie. Nathan said he?d like to get a real pig, but his parents won?t let him have one as a pet.

Nathan is very excited about his bar mitzvah, and has enjoyed his study sessions with Cantor Steve. He will be reading from the parashah Mas-ei: Numbers 34:1-12. ?In this portion, God dictates the borders for the Holy Land, describing which tribes should be given which sections,? Nathan reported. He then went on to say, ?This portion is stil l relevant now, with the dif ferent factions in the Middle East demanding their own religious territory in the Holy Land, and we need someone like God to give us the borders so it can all be fair.?

For his Mitzvah Project, Nathan?s been teaming up with FOLAR - Friends of the LA River (folar.org) to clean up that waterway. First, he raised money to donate to the organization and then he spent a

Saturday actually picking up garbage in and around the Glendale Narrows area of the L.A. River. ?There was a lot of trash to pick up,? Nathan confided. ?I chose this project because I believe it?s very important to conserve nature in the massive city that is Los Angeles,? he added.

Like many kids his age, Nathan honestly doesn?t know what he?d like to be when he grows up, and that?s okay with him. He?s perfectly happy enjoying and learning from all the experiences his life has to offer right now. One of those experiences will be a family trip to Italy following his bar mitzvah. ?I chose Italy because I l ike all the history and the food, and I think the area is beautiful,? he said.

We at Temple Sinai want to wish a hearty Mazel Tov! to Nathan and the entire Johnson family. We feel privileged to have such a kind, caring, and humorous young man as part of our temple community.

Bar Mitzvah Profile

Zachary DucoreHave you ever looked at a newborn baby and thought about the qualit ies you hope he might develop as he grew? You probably wished for a child who would be smart, kind, compassionate, and perhaps talented in one or more areas. All these qualit ies are embodied in Zachary Ducore, who will become a bar mitzvah on Saturday, August 10th. Zach is the son of temple members Lisa and Jeffrey Ducore. Athletic and competit ive, Zach likes to play baseball, golf , and basketball. He also likes playing his saxophone, riding his bike, and playing with his younger brother, Joshua, and with friends.

Zachary will soon enter 8th grade at John Muir Middle School in Burbank. He loves reading, and his favorite author is Edward Bloor because he said that Bloor ?is really good at foreshadowing and keeping the reader on their feet the whole book.? Zach?s favorite book is Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. He explained, ?Although it does have a sad ending, I learned many lessons on how to live your life to the fullest and on how to be the best that you could be.? Zach?s favorite subject in school is math. ?Not only am I good at it,? he remarked, ?but I also love numbers and the satisfaction of solving a dif f icult problem.? When Zach grows up he thinks that he would like to become a sports agent ?because it combines math (determining if a contract is good or bad) and persuasion (getting the team to give your player the most for his or her value),? two things Zach says he is good at.

Family is very important to Zach. His favorite Jewish holiday is Passover because ?? My whole family gets together to celebrate, my brother and I love competing to f ind the Afikomen, and there are always great macaroons.? Zach?s heroes are his grandparents. ?All of them worked hard and became successful,? he said proudly. ?They are also very loving and kind and always want the best for me.?

Zachary will be reading from the parashah D'varim, Deuteronomy 1:25-36 in which Moses recounts how he had sent 12 men to scout the Promised Land so the Israelites could enter it. The scouts? report was favorable about the land itself , but when the Israelites heard about the size of the people living in the Promised Land, they felt dismayed and lost faith in God, believing that God had led them to a place where they would meet death and defeat. God heard those complaints and swore that no one from that generation would be able to enter the Promised Land except for Joshua and Caleb, who gave encouraging reports and believed in the Israelites? ability to enter it successfully with God?s help.?My Torah portion relates to my own life because there have been times in my life where I have given up on other people,? related. ?Just l ike the Israelites lost faith in God, at t imes I have lost faith and trust in other people either in sports, school, or with my brother.?

Zach?s Mitzvah Project is cleaning up the beach and came about because ?last year I did a current events project on the Great Pacif ic Garbage Patch, and I asked myself how I could prevent this from getting bigger. I knew I couldn?t sail out to the middle of the Pacif ic Ocean so I decided to think smaller, and the beach seemed like a great idea.? Together with his family, Zach had completed two beach clean-ups at the time of this writ ing. The f irst in Ventura in May when he worked with the Surfrider Foundation (https:/ /www.surfrider.org/ ) and the second in June when he worked with Heal the Bay Foundation (https:/ / healthebay.org/ ) in Redondo Beach. A third clean-up took place in late July and involved the tedious collecting of small pieces of plastic, cigarette butts, bags, and other trash that could end up in the water and get eaten by sea animals.

We at Temple Sinai want to wish a hearty Mazel Tov! to Zach and the entire Ducore family. We feel privileged to have such an intell igent, compassionate, and involved young man as part of our temple community.

Bat Mitzvah Profile

Sophia Topol MertzelWe all know that most adolescents want, above all, to f it in, to be just l ike their peers. Therefore, it was both surprising and refreshing to f ind a young woman who is proud to describe herself as being a litt le weird. That remarkable person is Sophia Topol Mertzel, the daughter of temple members Becca Topol and Emil Mertzel. Sophia is about to enter 8th grade at South Pasadena Middle School. Her favorite academic subject is science because she ?always found it fun, interesting, and awesome.? ?I love experimenting and seeing why things work,? she explained. She loves to read ?because I love books and the whole wide world of stories? but doesn?t have a favorite author because she feels that there are so many authors and they all have dif ferent stories to tell, so she feels that she couldn?t choose just one. She does have two favorite books, however. They are The Life of Pi and The Book Thief. Sophia loved The Life of Pi ?because it is full of amazing metaphors about l ife in the story of this crazy experience.? She continued, ?I love The Book Thief because I have always been interested in Holocaust books, and this one is amazing because it describes the life of a German girl, l iving outside the camps during the middle of the war, who acts pro Hitler to survive.? She especially l iked the book because it was ?in the point of view of Death, which she had never seen before."

One of Sophia?s heroes is Irena Sendler, a non-Jewish woman who worked in plumbing at a ghetto. ?Irena risked her life to smuggle out and save Jewish infants,? Sophia related. ?Irena did eventually get caught and imprisoned, but wasn?t kil led. After the war, she even tried to reunite the kids she had saved with parents who survived.?

Art is a big passion of Sophia?s. Her favorite mediums are watercolors and oil pastels. Examples of her art can be seen all over her house, where they can be appreciated by her family, friends, and two 3-year-old female ?tuxedo? cats named Mighty Mouse and Mitzi

Moomoo. Sophia?s eclectic interests also include rock climbing, which interests her ?because it is really fun and strategic, and it makes me happy, even when it is really hard.?

Sophia will become a bat mitzvah on Saturday, August 24th. She has been studying Eikev, Deuteronomy 11:10-21 which talks about the special things about the Promised Land and why it will be so much greater than Egypt for the Israelites. It then goes on to talk about how the people will not only live in the land, but that they will prosper for as long as they follow the commandments. ?It

also talks about how we represent our Judaism and the importance of continuing to teach our children about Judaism,? she added. ?I think my Torah portion relates to my life in a kind of metaphorical way,? Sophia described. ?I think that, even though it talks about all the dif ferent parts of Judaism, it?s the litt le things that are really important, the litt le actions for others that make all the dif ference. I think doing those litt le things make others? lives just a litt le happier and better.? For her Mitzvah Project, Sophia went to a homeless shelter with family, friends, and other congregants. They made dinner and served it to the people, and then ate with the people there. ?I chose this because I love helping people and talking to them, and I also enjoy cooking when I get to.? Sophia?s one regret is that her grandmother, Rosemary, didn?t l ive to see her become a bat mitzvah. ?Although she was not Jewish, I know she would have had an amazing time and been so proud of me. I wish she could be there.? We at Temple Sinai want to wish a hearty Mazel Tov! to Sophia and the entire Topol-Mertzel family. We feel so privileged to have such a creative, passionate, and generous young lady as part of our Temple Sinai family.

The next t ime you drive up to Temple Sinai you will notice something special. Instead of old, cracked asphalt and barely visible stripes, you will discover a brand new parking lot. For two months this summer our lot has been closed while the temple undertook this major endeavor. The project was about much more than replacing asphalt and painting new lines. Among the many upgrades we and future temple members will enjoy are: *Four additional parking spaces

*Eco-friendly new landscaping and irrigation, with seven new trees

*A re-engineered drainage system (no more giant puddles!)

*Bril l iant energy-eff icient LED lighting

*A fun new playhouse, sandbox, and shaded decking for our students in the "play yard" area

*A bike rack, to make cycling to the temple easy

To celebrate the complet ion of this project , we invite the ent ire community to come enjoy it on Friday, August 16, at a f ree BBQ Dinner sponsored by Brotherhood, fol lowed by a special "Shabbat Under The Stars" service (see next page).

Years in the planning, the project is the f inal piece of the Capital Campaign launched in 2015 to upgrade and beautify all aspects of our sacred home. It never could have happened without the efforts of the following: Jon Weider, TSG member & general contractor, President & Past Presidents Maggie Freed, Mike Simon and Donna Baar, the TSG Endowment Fund Committee, landscapers extraodinaire Elinor & Bill Peters, and the hard work of Jake Baar, Susan Hain, Dan Heller, Jason Marx, and Emil Mertzel.

Lastly, thanks so much to the entire TSG community and also our tenant, Grandview House Preschool, for everyone's patience through the construction itself . Hats off to all!

Mazel Tov on our New Parking Lot!

This past July 7th my wife and I had the pleasure of serving a hot 4-course meal to 40 people at the Ascencia homeless shelter in Glendale. Temple Sinai?s members have served monthly meals at the shelter for over ten years. Our team, made up of my wife and I, Sophia Mertzel and Rick Laezman and his daughter Isabel, served chicken stew (pollo guisado, a famous Mexican recipe), rice, garlic bread, salad and dessert. All dishes were lovingly homemade by our team members. The shelter guests we served enjoyed the feast and many came back for seconds! Our team had a great day! Wonderful opportunity.

The Temple Sinai Book Club

Hidden Ones by Marcia Fine

It is the mid 17th century in Mexico and the Spanish Inquisit ion is rooting out any who practice, even secretly, rites not sanctioned by the Catholic Church. Among these is a family of conversos, including the abuela and her young granddaughter who are arrested and imprisoned. Their story, based on records of the Inquisit ion in Mexico, details the perilous life that conversos l ived and the journeys they had to be prepared to take to survive.

Weizmann Day School : Mark Your Calendars! by Lisa Feldman, M.A. Ed. Head of Weizmann Day School

Weizmann is looking forward to another incredible school year. Please mark your calendars for these fabulous programs, and watch for additional announcements in the coming months:

- October 24, 2019 ? 11:00a.m. ? Interfaith Concert Honoring the Memory of Daniel Pearl : Weizmann again will host students from neighboring schools New Horizon and St. Marks for a beautiful interfaith concert that is free and open to the public. Jewish, Muslim, and Christian elementary and middle school children come together to sing songs of peace and understanding. The event is part of the global Daniel Pearl World Music Days concert series, an international network of concerts honoring Daniel Pearl. The Daniel Pearl World Music Days have included over 14,000 performances across 140 countries. Of those, this is the only interfaith youth event.

- February 13, 2020 ? 6:00-8:00p.m. ? Weizmann Science Fair. Each year, Weizmann students participate in a school-wide Science Fair. This means that even our youngest students learn the scientif ic method, generate hypotheses, and perform experiments that are then displayed for the entire Weizmann community. This year?s Science Fair is scheduled for February 13, 2020. We love to have community members help with ?judging? the children?s projects. Please call the school at 626-797-0204 if you have a background in science and would like to be part of this exciting event. We also love to show off our students? work. Please join us for the Science Fair. We guarantee you will learn something new!

Weizmann?s Mission: to provide an enriching educat ion, rooted in Jewish t radit ions and values, which fosters crit ical thinking, creat ivity, col laborat ion, character and compassion.

To schedule a tour of our school , inquire about the school , or make a donat ion, please call the off ice at (626) 797-0204 or visit www.weizmann.net.
